Message from the President Welcome to the 95th New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Annual Convention. As President of the NJAHPERD, I join Past President, Kathy Fritz, Executive Director, Jackie Malaska, and the entire Executive Board in welcoming you to this spectacular event. This year, NJAHPERD focused on the theme of “Advocacy on the Move” with strength, power, energy, and passion. We are an Association that relies on the talents of all our members for speaking out on our professional guidelines and standards, fighting childhood obesity, developing our SGOs and continuing to promote healthy, active lifestyles for all our students, schools, and families in New Jersey. I would be remiss if I did not thank our Convention Manager, Jackie Malaska, for her passion, commitment, and dedication, and all the planning hours devoted to implementing this program along with her office staff and the members of the Executive Board. The Convention will provide you with many cutting edge sessions and great networking that will enable you to grow professionally. I hope the socials, Awards Banquet, and Grand Finale Raffle add to your personal enjoyment. Please don’t forget to visit the exhibitors and thank them for attending and caring about meeting your needs as an educator. My hope is that when you leave the Convention this year you will ADVOCATE your new ideas and strategies to promote healthy, active, creative life styles for all people in your school and community. Your chosen profession does make a difference in our society. Let your voice be heard. Have a fantastic convention and don’t forget to stop me to say hello and please enjoy the wonderful Jersey Shore. JoAnn Doherty NJAHPERD President

Welcome from SHAPE America President Welcome to the New Jersey AHPERD State Convention! It is my pleasure to join you as we renew old friendships and broaden our professional network. It is always exciting to visit a new place and to interact with those who share our passion for students and for our profession. This is an exciting time to be a member our profession! Our association is redefining and rebranding itself as a unified voice. Partnerships that compliment this effort capitalize on national initiatives such as Let’s Move! Active Schools that provides the structure through which schools can be an active participant in efforts to address the need for comprehensive school physical activity programs. The adoption of FitnessGram as the official fitness assessment in the Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) marks a significant milestone and affirms our role in the process of enhancing the fitness level of America’s children. These are only two examples of a number of collaborative relationships that take advantage of the synergy possible when working together to achieve collective goals. The rebranding of AAHPERD as SHAPE America is the culmination of decades of efforts to unify the professional interests of our members. We are excited about the progress that has been achieved and we look forward to working with all of you as we seek to achieve our vision of “Healthy People – Physically Educated and Physically Active”. Have a wonderful conference! Gale Wiedow, President SHAPE America

Greetings!

Welcome from the Executive Director

On behalf of the NJAHPERD Executive Board, welcome to the 2014 Annual Convention at the Jersey Shore. We extend a special thank you to our guests, speakers, exhibitors, and especially to our members. Your attendance confirms your personal commitment, and makes a powerful statement that our profession is vital to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for everyone in New Jersey! As Convention Manager, I want to thank the NJAHPERD Executive Board for their assistance in planning an excellent program. Many hours are necessary to plan an event of this size. Also, thanks to all of our convention volunteers for their time and effort in providing services in hospitality, presiding, registration, and selling T-shirts; a great team has made this convention a success. The excitement and energy that surrounds us during convention time is truly who we are as professionals. Be proud, and recognize that you play an important role in the educational process of the whole child. Take the time to network with fellow professionals and share your experiences. Examine the latest products and services from our vendors, and applaud NJAHPERD award recipients. Most importantly, reflect on your personal wellness. Enjoy yourself and return to your students refreshed and rejuvenated, with a sense of accomplishment, pride, and a renewed excitement for the best profession! Jackie Malaska Executive Director

Introduction 2014 Executive Board

Passing of the Gavel

Introduction: Harlem Wizards Grande Finale Raffle

Final Remarks

Susan Toth NJAHPERD LMAS Coordinator

Dr. Michael Fowlin, better known as Mykee, is no stranger to the stage. He has been formally acting since age 11, but started creating voices (via prank calling) at age 9. In addition to his talents on stage, he has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri, and in the fall of 2001, he attained a doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Oddly enough, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, for while he is performing, he is convinced that every audience member is his patient! His programs combine both his professional acting talents and his psychological training. His mission is to create an atmosphere of worldwide inclusion, not just tolerance, towards all people. He has worked extensively with all age groups in the United States and in other countries. His work has included peer mediation, diversity trainings, gender equity workshops, and violence prevention seminars. YOU DON’T’ KNOW ME UNTIL YOU KNOW ME is a one person show that deals with the issues of race discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia, and emotional pain felt by special education children. In a gripping, fast passed, 75 minute performance, Michael Fowlin slips in and out of characters, both male and female, who “share their stories.” The characters share their stories in an often humorous, but at times, heartbreaking manner.
