Message from the Mayor On behalf of all citizens, staff and council for the Town of Niverville, I would like to take this opportunity to say Welcome to Niverville – the place Where You Belong. Most likely, Welcome Back is more appropriate for many of you, as our Olde Tyme Country Fair has become an annual ‘saved date’ for thousands of people from the surrounding area and throughout the province. We’re proud of the town we have built and the Fair showcases the spirit of community we know you will feel.
and entertainment value that the community is able to bring together to the benefit of all who attend.
The Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair is a true community event that will entertain you completely, whether you are looking for the thrill of the midway or the energy of the stage, showcasing local and international talents. Additionally, you will see a community come together with over 500+ volunteers organized by a dedicated committee as we prepare our small town for over 10,000 guests. I am consistently amazed at the execution, energy
Best wishes for an unforgettable weekend,
Throughout the fair weekend, we would encourage visitors to explore the community beyond Main Street and experience the place we call home. If you are not sure where to start, chat with a local volunteer and ask some questions. Don’t worry, this is still small town where we don’t mind talking to strangers; because that way, we can number you among our friends.

From the Rec Director Welcome to Niverville! Whether you are a first time visitor or a long time resident; someone who only comes out to visit once in a while, or someone who has recently decided to make Niverville their home, we are happy to have you as part of our community during the Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair. Our annual Couch Potato Race will be held on Saturday afternoon on Main Street. This lively and entertaining event has teams racing against each other to see who can go from “couch potato” to being active the fastest. Year round events held by Niverville Recreation and Wellness help to promote and encourage a healthy active lifestyle. On Louis Riel Day in February, we hold a winter fun day with lots of free activities, events and contests. A Summer
Fun Day at the park will be held on Saturday July 7th which will also include many free events and activities. A wide variety of other classes and events are held year round and as your community connection for sports, recreation, arts, health and leisure, programs and entertainment we love receiving suggestions from members of the community on what they would like to see offered. In addition to what is offered by Niverville Recreation and Wellness, there are many other sports, recreation, wellness activities and events in the community. Visit Niverville Recreation and Wellness online at www.NivervilleRecreation.com. Hope to meet you on the street during the Fair!

Wakeboard Rail Jam
Making their first ever appearance in Canada, See it first, at the Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair! The overly-creative minds of wakeboarding’s cutting edge thrill seekers combined with a little old fashioned ingenuity has lead to the development of the high speed, gas powered winch and one of the newest and most exciting developments in the sports young history. It has given riders the ability to take their sport “to the streets” with the use of portable pools, separated
by rails and sliders, and pulled by a winch. Called a “Pool-Gap” or a “Rail Jam”, its action sports up close and in your face; and it’s as exciting for the riders as it is for the spectators. “Sliding” or “grinding” has been a part of wakeboarding for the past couple of years, but until now it has all happened behind a boat or PWC and on a lake. Now, instead of watching the riders from
100 yards away on the shore, spectators can be just a few feet away from the action. DATE

From the Chamber of Commerce Welcome to Niverville! This is an exciting weekend for Niverville. We get to put on the Olde Tyme Country Fair, our largest event of the year and quite possibly the best fair in all of Southern Manitoba. On behalf of the Niverville Chamber of Commerce we want to welcome you to Niverville. We hope you have a wonderful time enjoying the many exciting events the fair has to offer. Did you know? Niverville was the home of the first fully operational grain elevator in Western Canada. Constructed in 1878, the new facility began a boom of construction that saw thousands of elevators constructed across the prairies. Since then, agriculture and construction have continued to thrive in Niverville, alongside many new services including financial, legal, medical, automotive, and so much more! Growing retail and industrial sectors continue to provide ample opportunity for local employment.
The Niverville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is composed of local business people whose objective is to enhance and promote the business community in Niverville and its surrounding area. Below is a list of businesses that are currently members. Please stop by for a visit at these businesses throughout the weekend. Many of them are significant supporters of this event and without their help this weekend would not be possible. We are pleased to have you visit our community, and we’d love to have you join us!

With the highly anticipated release of Dirt’s lead single ‘Canadian Girls’, demand for Brody’s signature brand of storytelling is greater than ever. Midway through the title track of Dean Brody’s 2012 release, Dirt, you’ll find yourself wearing the kind of silly grin you may remember sporting the first time you stuck your fingers in the mud as a kid. Best get used to it – just like its namesake – Dirt’s going to stick with you. Then again, Brody’s music always does. The Nova Scotia based, BC bred singer/songwriter has a way of painting pictures with his lyrics that are so vivid, they tend to stay fixed in your mind’s eye just as long as the melodies he sets them to. This, Brody’s third full-length release, and the follow up to his hugely successful 2010 effort – Trail in Life – is no exception. “The title track, ‘Dirt’, stands out as the most ‘country’ song on the record”, Brody says, and takes a playful look at the role dirt plays in our lives from the time we first come home covered in it, to the moment they lay us down under a nice cool layer of earth for good. “It just says a lot in one word,” Brody explains. Essentially, if you’re not afraid of getting dirty, chances are you’re not afraid to dig in and stick life out when fate hands you a rough deal, even if it means taking a risk on a road that might lead nowhere in an effort to make your dreams come true. That’s something Brody has never feared.
Growing up in the tiny town of Jaffray, BC, Brody took his first job at age fifteen at the local sawmill. While it was tough, it only set the tone for what would become a much tougher gig down the line – his struggle to make a living as a singer/ songwriter. After landing his first publishing deal in 2004, Brody headed to Nashville, but two years on, found himself back in Jaffray, back at the mill, and at a crossroads in his musical career.
Three-time CCMA winner Dean Brody returns with his third album, Dirt. The lead single “Canadian Girls” has gained great momentum securing the title for #1 Most Added song nationwide (Mediabase), debuting at #1 on the Nielsen Soundscan Country Sales Chart, and hitting #1 on the iTunes Country Chart upon release. A recording contract with Broken Bow Records led him south again for another 5 years and although his self-titled debut broke the top 25 in the U.S., the top 10 in Canada and garnered him a CCMA for Single of the Year, his partnership with the label was threatened by an ultimatum that Brody simply could not accept. He soon found himself looking for a new home in Canada for both his growing family and his music. He’d
soon find both; settling down on Nova Scotia’s South Shore and inking a deal with Open Road Recordings in 2009. Since, Brody has become one of Canada’s brightest country stars. His sophomore album Trail in Life yielded four top 10 singles, won three 2011 CCMA Awards for Album, Songwriter and Single of the Year as well as a 2011 JUNO nomination for Country Album of the Year. To top it off Brody finished out 2011 as the Most Played Canadian Country Artist of the year on Canadian radio. Dirt finds Brody expanding his range as a songwriter and storyteller dramatically. Although he still takes cues from longtime country influences like Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis, Dirt is also influenced by the rich musical heritage of Brody’s adopted Maritime home and nowhere more so than on ‘It’s Friday’ – an East meets West stomping party song featuring Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle, Sean McCann and Bob Hallett. Like a number of the songs on Dirt, ‘It’s Friday’ is written with Brody’s live show in mind. “People come out to shows, they don’t want to sit around listening to heavy songs on a Friday or Saturday night, they want to have a good time.” Dirt, from top to bottom, has lots of songs to keep audiences on their feet. Simultaneously, the members of RED have gone through a season of rediscovering who they are as a band. The epic quest of finding one’s identity might be one of the most universal themes found in the pursuit of art. The hopeless wandering replaced by the hope-filled breakthrough has been chronicled time and again in painting, sculpture, prose, poetry, film and, certainly, music. The men who make up the rock band RED have been through those trials themselves. They’ve taken those experiences to heart, mixed them with a plethora of influences – be they observations on art they admire, or communications with fans they adore – and now burst forth with a dynamic new set of songs geared toward finding who we truly are, inside and out. It’s part of that ongoing and
ever-changing process of trying to find out who you are, as the circumstances and definitions of the world morph around you. And it’s in that continuous examination that new answers can continue to be found, even for a band that’s been asked the origin of its name a million times. The thing is, the members of RED really don’t mind the questions. And they’re inviting fans to help them find the answers. They know it’s in the reaching, the yearning, the struggling, the wanting and the needing that new identity is formed, emerging forged and strong, powerful and loud. DATE Friday, June 8

Wonder Shows Midway Wonder Shows began as a midsize carnival which soon grew to accommodate 3 acres of rides, games, and fun food. In the spring of 2000, husband and wife, Ken and Anita Kiernicki, who have over 20 years of carnival experience under their belt, became the new owners of Wonder Shows. They vowed to continue with the philosophy Wondershows was reputable for – “Family Fun Entertainment”. As you stroll through our midway, you will notice Anita in her office taking care of all Wonder Shows operations. From customer service, to bookings, and staff management, Anita is meticulous about assuring smooth “behind the scenes” operations. “BIG BOSS”of the midway, Kenny, will
be walking with a big cable or toolbox in hand making sure your Wonder Shows experience is the best it can be for you and your family, Ken is also responsible for guaranteeing the 30 attraction fleet makes its way through the route safely and securely, then setting it up and having it properly checked over by his very friendly staff. Now in their 44th year, Wondershows has continuously maintained a clean, family owned and operated midway, traveling to major festivals throughout Manitoba . DATE

Niverville Works With Nature As part of its commitment to “greening” the community, Niverville will be constructing a wetland in its old treatment lagoon to “clean” bio-solids – the material left in the bottom of the lagoon after the lagoon was closed. Whenever a local government builds a new treatment lagoon, it must clean up the old lagoon as part of its environmental license. In most cases, Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship requires that the bio-solids be removed and disposed of according to the department’s environmental guidelines.
Nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and heavy metals can be removed naturally from the ground by plants, micro-organisms, and natural chemical reactions. It has been known for a long time that wetlands and their related plants will naturally clean waste water in treatment systems. What has not been tried before is using a natural system approach to cleaning bio-solids when a lagoon is no longer being used.
APPRAISAL SERVICES Removing the bio-solids is costly, uses large amounts of fossil fuel, and releases carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) when diesel fuel is combusted.
Cleaning the bio-solids in place would be of benefit both financially and environmentally.
Niverville has decided to test this natural method to clean up its old sewage lagoon. The town is joining forces with researcher from the Department of Soil Science, University of Manitoba, with assistance from the Department of Bio-systems Engineering, and Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research. Together the team will study this approach over the next number of years. Native Plant Solutions, a division of Ducks Unlimited Canada, is overseeing the project.

Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship has approved an alteration to Niverville’s environmental license to undertake this “first of its kind” research in Canada. The research will take place between 2012 and 2014 with construction of a wetland in part of the lagoon followed by regular monitoring and analysis of the bio-solids and plant tissue to determine the rate at which nutrients and heavy metals are being removed. The information from this project will be used as a guide for those interested in decommissioning old lagoons using a natural ecosystem approach.

Parks & Facilities Niverville has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years, and we have strived hard to retain lots of green space and wonderful parks for the community’s enjoyment. While Hespeler Park is the largest park in our community we also have several other parks nestled away. Edelweiss Park, located in the centre of Edelweiss crescent, is a beautiful, large open field perfect for pickup games of soccer, family gatherings, etc. Opa’s park is located on the North end of Roselawn Bay and can be accessed via a walkway on the North West corner of Roselawn Bay. Opa’s park offers playstructures, a swingset and a basketball court. In addition to these three main parks, we have several pocket parks throughout town and a tot park (located on Third Street North and Fourth Avenue North) Hespeler Park is a 91 acre park located in the South end of Niverville off Fifth Street South. Existing facilities include a beach volleyball court, mini and full sized soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, swing sets, outdoor exercise equipment (new in Fall of 2011!), a picnic shelter and a section of the Crow Wing Trail. This summer there will be a natural playground and an accessible, inclusive playground built at Hespeler Park. Hespeler Park also features asphalted walking paths
that are great for cycling, rollerblading or pushing wheelchairs and baby strollers. An off-leash dog park is located in the old baseball diamonds between the arena and the curling rink. Fully enclosed and free to use, it’s the perfect place to take your dog(s) for some extra exercise! Please obey rules posted and clean up after your pet to ensure that this remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone to visit. Garbage and recycling bins, a picnic table and benches are also in the dog park. The Niverville Recreational Complex, home of the Clippers, has a hockey arena, meeting room, upper viewing room and canteen facilities. The curling club, located next to the arena, has 3 sheets of natural ice, and a meeting room downstairs. Niverville also has a Skateboard park and drop in centre on the East side of Town that is run by Youth for Christ. John Henry’s meeting room and banquet hall, and the Niverville Heritage Centre are two beautiful facilities that are perfect for your meeting, conference, wedding, family gathering etc needs.

Organized summer sports include baseball, soccer and flag rugby. Soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, and a beach volleyball court are located at Hespeler Park. During our long winter months, check out the arena for some great hockey games, public skating, ringette and more! The curling club is a wonderful place to meet some new friends and they even have brooms and equipment available for you to borrow if you don’t have your own. There are lots of other organized sports – Tae Kwon Do, yoga, aerobics and fitness classes, boot camps, and a wonderful dance studio and gym. The Niverville Recreation has snowshoes, pedometers and handheld GPS units that are available to borrow The Recreation Department holds an annual Recreation and Wellness Showcase in September. This year’s date for the showcase is September 12th at the Heritage Centre from 5-8pm. Drop by to see what recreational opportunities are available in Niverville, and to register for winter sports and Fall and Winter recreation programs. Visit the Niverville Recreation website for more information www.NivervilleRecreation.com
Niverville Recreation and Wellness promotes health and fitness through free, family friendly events.
Summer Fun Day at the Park This year, Niverville Recreation and Wellness will be holding a fun day at Hespeler Park on Saturday July 7th. Some of the events and activities to look forward to that day are:
geocaching instruction, entomology presentations, bug safaris, sweep netting for kids, mosquito and pest proofing demonstrations, an atlatl range, a hand grinder station, bannock making, ultimate frisbee demonstrations, and disc golf. There will be a juggling workshop (free for anyone who wants to learn how to juggle!), and a kite making workshop which is also free. MPI will have their fatal vision goggles demonstration and there’s a rumour that we may have a special guest visiting from the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre. Local artists will be adding to the day by providing music and entertainment, and there will also be bouncers for the kids to wear off any energy that they may have left after trying out all of the other activities that day!

Coming This Summer to Hespeler Park
This exciting new playground is made possible through the financial support of the following: • Town of Niverville • The Manitoba Community Places Program • Investors Group • and through other fundraising ventures including a concert by local musicians.
A large natural playground with accessible, inclusive playground features will be created this summer in Hespeler Park. The following is a list of the new playground equipment and features that will be included: Sway Fun: The Sway fun is a playground glider for people of all ages and abilities. Not only is it is completely wheelchair accessible, with room for two wheelchairs, but it also encourages inclusive play as there are also two large benches for others to participate in the fun at the same time! The other exciting feature of the Sway Fun is that it is not only accessible for children, but for parents, grandparents, or caregivers with mobility issues; making it not only accessible and inclusive but also encouraging of inter-generational play. Play Panels: Off of our existing paved walkway we are planning for a poured rubber accessible pathway leading to three play panels and an
accessible digger. A tic-tac-toe panel, trail tracker panel, and chimes panel will not only allow children to explore using all of their senses, but will further encourage inclusive play. Accessible Digger: Along the new pathway with the panels will be an accessible digger. This feature will help children develop their coordination and mechanical skills. Natural Play Area: The natural playground area will utilize an existing hill and tunnel and will have a climbing wall, jump pit, zipline and pea gravel “stream” coming from the tunnel which will lead to the digger. Natural play allows for children to have “open-ended” play, encouraging more diverse and creative play. Research has shown that children with symptoms of ADHD are better able to concentrate after contact with a natural environment. Natural play areas can help with children’s coordination, balance, and agility.
