George Canyon You can go ahead and just dance to the music of George Canyon, if that’s what you want. He’s a country neo-traditionalist par excellence, producing music situated somewhere between the bright and studio-tooled Nashville ideal and something a little older, with a voice that can soar with emotion or linger in a heavy bottom-end that feels like a kick in the chest from a faith healer. It’s instant. When you see the man, with piercing eyes that hang above his square jaw, the star appeal becomes even more obvious, and you remember all those achievements – the string of hits, a shelf-full of Junos and Canadian Country Music Awards, not to mention his rocket-ride to American fame on Nashville Star 2 in 2004, and the subsequent blockbuster albums One Good Friend, and Somebody Wrote Love. But there’s more to Canyon; a gravity evident in songs like 2007’s “I Want You To Live”, and which leaps from the title song of Canyon’s newest album, What I Do. “If you were to pick a theme for any of my albums,” he says, “it’s always gonna be somewhat to do with my family, somewhat to do with moral issues, maybe miracles, and faith for sure. My faith plays a very important part in my life. If it wasn’t for that I’d probably be long gone. Who knows where?” Canyon’s faith and moral strength can be seen in his extra-curricular activities, whether it’s his work on behalf of Juvenile Diabetes (he was stricken at 14), or his well-known support of Canada’s Armed Forces. After a handful of visits to

Kandahar, Canyon was made an honorary Colonel, by Canadian Defence minister Peter MacKay and CDS, Gen.Hillier. One of the most striking tracks on What I Do, a piano-led weeper of a duet with Crystal Shawanda called “Back In Your Arms”, forms a companion piece to “I Want You to Live”, in that addresses once again the human stories behind the conflict. Canyon sings about things that are bigger than him, and the humility is flattering. As he says, “In country music, sincerity is everything,” which might be why the likeable 38 year-old from Nova Scotia is a rapidly ascending star on both sides of the border. He tells a good story, about being at the Grand Ole Opry, and hanging with Porter Wagoner and Little Jimmy Dickens, who called him ‘Canada’, and then told dirty jokes. “You look at a lot of things in life, and you wonder, ‘Gosh, I wonder what it’s like on the other side of that fence,’ and you imagine things and you dream things up. But the other side of the fence is like the side you’re on. They’re normal people, they get dressed in the morning, they have the same issues – it was a bit of an eye-opener.” The funny thing is, Canada’s rising Country superstar speaks from the other side of the fence himself these days, whether he knows it or not. If you have a passion for old automobiles, I guarantee there will at least one gem that will stir some golden memories. Come dream with us at the Niverville Fair’s Show and Shine. Expected to be the biggest ever, Niverville Fair’s Show and Shine will be held the Friday night of the Fair. Last years attendance was well beyond expectation, and indications are that we should break all previous records this year. The Show & Shine is open to all specialty vehicles. In the past we have had over 175 vehicles representing everything from Rat Rods to Concourse Restorations, from Big Fins to V-Twins. If you have a vintage car or any specialty

We will be offering the participants a roped off car show area which is available on a first come basis, (so try to come early!) The car show & shine is open to the public at 6:30pm but will be open to Show & Shine participants one hour earlier to allow for parking and set up. Our primary goal has always been to make the “Show & Shine” fun and entertaining for both spectators and the car crazed participants, so if you have any questions or suggestions about the Show & Shine, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Message From the Mayor On behalf of all Niverville citizens, staff and council members, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our town – a community Where You Belong. We are extremely proud of our home and are pleased and honored to be your hosts on what will undoubtedly be a memorable weekend. The Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair is a truly community event. Some have called it an entertainment extravaganza, one that will capture your spirit, whether you are looking for the thrill of the midway, the nostalgia of the car show or the energy of the central stage showcasing local and international talents. Over 500 volunteers will work hard to prepare Main Street for

you and 7500 additional guests. You will be consistently amazed at the execution, energy and entertainment value that the community will bring together for the benefit of all in attendance. Throughout the fair weekend, we would encourage our guest to walk beyond Main Street and experience Niverville. If you are not sure where to start, chat with a local volunteer and ask questions. Don’t worry, as a small town we enjoy talking to strangers. In short order we hope to include you among our friends. Best wishes for an unforgettable weekend!

Music

Urban Cowboys Urban Cowboys is a band comprised of a variety of musical backgrounds. Each member having a wealth of experience in many musical genres. Their combined commitment and talent has enabled them to cross over to the country side.

Prairie Jewel Since opening for Doc Walker at our very own 2008 Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair, Prairie Jewel has grafted an edgy, urban cynicism into the best of Canadian folk music’s storytelling tradition. With voices that play like evening sun on dappled wheat fields, Sarah Hatherly and Katherine Johnson’s crystal tones and rich harmonies hypnotize audiences. Their playbook swings from hymn-like acoustics in The Parting Glass, to a sharp-tongued, street/folk hybrid in their original Orange Girl. With strong musical backgrounds, Prairie Jewel write, sing and play as only true blue prairie gals can. Sarah Hatherly follows in the tradition of North America’s best musicians by singing in churches as a small child in Manitoba and Trinidad, where her parents served in a Methodist church. A versatile musician and stage performer, Hatherly plays piano, guitar, trumpet, French horn, harmonica, bass and percussion. When it comes to alternative folk artists, this

girl is the real deal. Hatherly says, “Music is the answer to everything.” Funny and footloose at heart, she says, “I could see myself getting addicted to life on the road. There’s something very liberating about it.” Katherine Johnson is a classically trained pianist, whose love affair with Celtic music began at school in Scotland. While prairie born-and-raised she spent some of her childhood being toted across the globe by her parents. Her travels have imbued her musicality with an international flavor that is strengthened by an ear that distills songs to their pure elements. She’s described as dedicated, driven and committed to her art. Although a natural wanderer, it’s home comforts that Johnson loves: Family, friends, a home written song and hot mug of herbal tea. Niverville – A Town Built on Diversity businesses and leadership continues to reflect a variety of cultural backgrounds including Scottish, English, German, Mennonite, and Chinese. Niverville’s historical beginnings are perhaps a bit unique to other communities in Western Canada in that Niverville served as a “melting pot” for cultural groups seeking a new start in a new land.

Over time as one experiences harmonious interaction between cultural groups, there is the capacity to create an identity that is rich and sustainable. Unique new community characteristics may evolve. This could include the potential for broader perspectives on issues; a range of cultural foods and recreational activities; a rich heritage of languages and a spirit of cooperation and tolerance… And this is Niverville’s experience. For from its very beginning it was a town built on diversity, with a precious yet varied history that continues to shape its future. Sometimes mistaken as a Mennonite settlement, the community’s roots are much more varied. It was named for Joseph-Claude Boucher, Chevalier de Niverville, an early explorer and fur trader. Located approximately eight kilometers from the forks of the Rat and Red rivers, it made an ideal choice for settlement. The first wave of settlers were Scottish farmers from the Selkirk settlements to the north and emigrants from Lower Canada (Ontario). A second surge in 1874 brought the Mennonites. Under the watchful skilled oversight of William Hespeler, the

Mennonites added significant numbers to the town’s population base. The town plan was registered in 1878. With the arrival of the CPR line in the same year, businesses and additional settlers followed including those of French, Metis, Ukrainian, and Jewish backgrounds. The blessings and impacts of this humble beginning can still be seen today. Streets names such as Bronstone, Church, Wallace and Krahn reflect our historical roots. When one listens carefully, a variety of languages can still be heard in the local restaurants. Community

So what does this suggest for today’s local residents? It means that they live in a community where acceptance and engagement is easier, regardless of their background. Everyone is welcome. You will not be a newcomer in Niverville for long. Obstacles in becoming an active member of the community are very few … it really becomes your choice. Although neighbourhoods and friendship circles will always form, there is not dominant group to create a restrictive hierarchy. For the citizen, there is a richness and freedom in greeting your neighbours with a Guten Tag, sitting for a meal of Kung Po Chicken and saying Au Revoir after singing the Parting Glass. It means the community is truly a place where anyone and everyone can feel they are part of something bigger. It means that Niverville is “the Place Where You Belong.”

Recipe for a Healthy Community Pickup any Canadian newspaper today, and you are almost guaranteed to find at least one article regarding health and healthy living. With our changing lifestyles it has become increasingly challenging to ensure healthy physical, mental and spiritual levels are maintained. Imbalance in any area may lead to individuals facing issues of excessive stress, obesity, and depression. Community leaders, aware of this new reality, recognize their community’s well-being can very well be influenced in proactively addressing this issue. Put simply - healthy people make healthy homes – collectively, healthy homes make a healthy community. While individual benefits to a healthier lifestyle may be self apparent, community health may be a more subtle observation. Generally, when citizens are health consciousness, communities are seeing less strain on an already stretched medical system, better productivity, increased participation and volunteerism, and a variety of additional benefits.

their health goals. On the physical side, partnership with the local doctors has provided for a holistic community medical approach. Local medical staff are providing leadership with information and direction in this area. Consultations with leisure consultants has encouraged efforts such as 10+ km of walking trails throughout the town and exercise stations along parts of the trail. Community groups such as Niverville Active and Healthy Living have come together to work local initiatives including a Family Fun Day, a day families participate together in physical activity, and a community cook book featuring healthy recipes.

While not always considered a health focus, environmental stewardship has been given high priority. The Town of Niverville has been a leader in community recycling, achieving consistently a provincially awarded A+ grade. New initiatives in community and individual composting, low impact lifestyles and waste reduction have been and are being promoted and supported.

What is Supportive Care? Supportive Care individuals generally cannot live independently and safely at home and require assistance and/or supervision on a 24-hour basis. People who are already living in the Assisted Living residence and receiving the services listed above and have advanced in terms of requiring a higher degree of personal assistance or those receiving significant homecare services in their current homes and can no longer manage on their own may be eligible for Supportive Care residency. An important distinction between Assisted Living and Supportive Care is that due to the increased needs of Supportive Care residents, an individual must be paneled by the South Eastman Regional Health Authority prior to being considered for the Supportive Care Residence. If anyone is uncertain about which residence the applicant should apply for, it is important to contact the Homecare Coordinator at the Niverville Primary Health Care Centre at 388-7069. In addition to the aforementioned provision of services, the Supportive Care residence will have a Homecare attendant on staff 24 hours per day 7 days per week.

I Really Doubt You Can Dance Once Yet Even

A fun competition of different ballroom dances by beginners. . . it will indeed be very entertaining!

Mairi

Tom

Graham

Tom

Jodie

Carl

Hmmm . . . Tom is much like cod liver oil; leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but is really good for you! Tom has his finger on the pulse of this community, an aggressive businessman, a gracious volunteer, and a very giving individual, supporting all community events. He has a sharp wit, and is very intelligent . . . but what in the world made him think he could dance!

All business. She’s been practicing for this moment for 15 years and now it’s finally here. A self proclaimed down and dirty competitor, this hip-hop student says ballroom will be no problem, especially against the cast of clowns in this event!

It’s obvious Carl is in the lumber business, he dances like he has wooden legs! His dance talent, or possible lack of, totally contradicts his business persona. Carl anchors one of the longest standing businesses in Niverville. His tenure at the helm of the WM. Dycks empire that has been in his family for decades, has been very predictable. Supporting the community and it’s citizens wherever he can and leaving everything in better shape than when he found it. Good Luck Carl, you’re going to need it!

Nat When this young gentleman first graced our practice floor I thought . . . you must be kidding, am I being punked? Well maybe we are being a little harsh. Sure Nat was a little clumsy and had a bit of difficulty with the steps, and that hasn’t changed one bit. He spreads his focus between school, drama, soccer, running for school president and dance at this point. A self admitted girl magnet, he’s working on his smile and the hair just screams Hollywood! Nat is banking on this turning into a popularity contest not a skills competition, otherwise we better start working on a “Plan B”.

Mairi It will take a skilled surgeon to assure a successful recovery for this novice dancer to rise victorious when the music ends. But a challenge doesn’t scare this lady off. The little practice she helped to get started in our fine community is now thriving with numerous staff. Regardless of what the dance gods decide, our community is the winner because of all Mairi has already done for us.

Jessica Definitely not a show off, but it’s hard not to be when you’re this talented. A daddy’s girl and our youngest competitor at 11 years old. She just wants to dance for fun, but doesn’t think it will be tough beating the rest of these “old fogeys”.

Graham Definitely the big man in this contest, so we’re not going to say much negative about him. The rookie minister at the Word of Life Church believes he will have a higher power in his corner. We wonder, if he believes God will see him to victory, why God has yet to make an appearance at any of Graham’s practice sessions? Well, this is a contest . . . so judge we will! Saturday, June 13
