The Road Hammers DATE

TIME

Saturday, June 12

9:00 p.m.

Stick around after the concert for the Pyrotechnics Finale!

“It doesn’t matter if you drive a car or a Harley… a mini-van or an 18-wheeler – it all comes down to basic human nature,” says Jason McCoy. “There’s a bit of Jekyll and Hyde inside all of us. We want to be domestic animals, but on the other hand we have this natural urge to set out and conquer new worlds. You’ll find this in the heart of the highway.” That’s exactly where McCoy, and fellow Road Hammers Clayton Bellamy (vocals/guitar) and Chris Byrne (Bass and Backing Vocals) found inspiration for their new record, The Road Hammers II. Equal parts blazing southern fried rock and deep country soul, The Road Hammers II has all the ingredients that made their debut the perfect driving record. Born on the road, forged in blood, sweat, concrete and steel, the new album features 11 no-nonsense tracks that are sure to cement the Hammer’s reputation as one of Canada’s most compelling country acts. Where their first record featured trucking favourites like Jerry Reed’s “Eastbound and Down” and Del Reeves’, “Girl On the Billboard,” (which hit #1 at CMT Canada), with the exception of a signature Hammer take on the John Martin Summers’ classic, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” the new record is weighted heavily in favour of original material. The Road Hammers II

features raw, riff-heavy anthems like “Cowboy ‘Til I Die,” “No Time for Long Goodbyes” and “Freewheelin’,” complete with Skynyrdesque dueling guitars, wailing Hammonds and the band’s signature harmonies; McCoy’s deep country drawl speaking from the heartland, Bellamy’s trademark urgency bringing the rock, and Byrne’s sky-high harmonies soaring above. There’s ample wry humour, too - songs that find the Hammers cracking wise about everything from “Getting Screwed” by the taxman to the joy of finally finding “A Girl Who Loves To Truck.” “We’re not all 19-years-old and leaving nothing behind,” Bellamy says. “You’re trying to keep the band going and make sure your wife’s happy and the kids are looked after.” Correspondingly, the record spends as much time on the rewards of tearing a strip off the highway as it does the risks of holding two separate lives together, ‘one to make a living and one to make it all worthwhile.’ Tallying up the wounds on songs like “I’ve Got the Scars To Prove It,” and taking a longing, if tongue in cheek, look back home on “Workin’ Hard At Lovin’ You” and lead single “Homegrown.” Still, there’s not much call for staying at home if you want to play 6 nights out of 7 – “Touring,” says McCoy, “that’s where music comes alive.” Especially for a band that routinely leaves everything on stage, night after night after night. “Coming off a solo career, working with a band really energizes you,” McCoy says, by way of explanation. “All of a sudden you’re starting

from the bottom again. It reminds you why you got into this in the first place.” With their undeniable chemistry; their high-octane live show energizing a growing fan base across North America (and prompting an on-the-spot invitation for second play at the Grand Ole Opry, before the sweat even cooled from their first one); their self-titled 2004 debut yielding 4 Top 10 hits, including the #1 Country Radio smash, “East Bound and Down,” and domestic sales in excess of 80,000 records; sharing the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Roy Clark; inking a US deal with Montage Records; filming back to back seasons of their hit TV series and picking up an unholy head of steam and their fair share of hardware along the way (including CCMA’s for Best Group or Duo two years running in 2005-06, best video for 2006’s “East Bound and Down” and the 2006 Juno for Country Recording of the year) - The Road Hammers have put some serious miles between themselves and the bottom. Not bad for a band that McCoy started as a bridge between his own solo efforts. Still, he’s frustrated by the time it’s taken for the band to get a follow up record into Canadian hands. “The wheels were moving so slow. We’ve been sitting down in Nashville, writing songs and being ready for this record for two years.” In the end though, “We got more in the can because we were sitting on our cans,” he adds, laughing. That’s what The Road Hammers bring to the stage and the studio, a realness and rawness stemming from a long, steady love affair with the highway and a willingness to bet the farm on it, repeatedly, to see what’s around the next corner.

Message from the Mayor As I write this message for the 2nd Edition of this magazine I am filled with a renewed sense of pride in our community. From the businesses and homes of our small town, we are able to generate a Fair of enormous proportions, not just in its numbers (10,000+), but also in its swell of community spirit. We consider it a privilege to be able to share ourselves with everyone who joins us for this memorable event. While it may appear that the celebration is centered around the midway rides, the food booths, or the music and entertainment - the true celebration is that of neighbours, friends and visitors sharing fun and fellowship. In a day and age where neighbourhood relationships are often managed with bylaws and litigation and where success is often measured by the big house that allows one to live with virtual anonominity, the Olde Tyme Country Fair is exactly as its name suggests; a kickback to a simpler time

. A time, perhaps better in many ways, when community was celebrated out of a common respect for the collective benefit it provided… a time when neighbours were appreciated and required. The Olde Tyme Country Fair is just such a event where we have tried to recaptured in part some of our hometown spirit. It is here for us to collectively enjoy and share. Its within reach for all as it starts with our own perspective and willingness to come on down and participate in the fun. I hope you will enjoy the outward celebration that we will present to you this year. Sample the food (try the borscht!) and enjoy the rides (before the borscht!). And may you feel the “spirit of community” that warms the streets .... and take some of the it back to your own homes. Best wishes for an unforgettable weekend!

Power. If there is one word to descirbe Project 86 it would be this one. The band has built its reputation on it over the span of their thirteen-year career. From their intensity to their thought provoking lyricism, anyone who knows Project knows the force that they bring. But on their latest release Picket Fence Cartel, they are exploring power from a new perspective - not only through heacy sounds but through asking powerful questions to the lister. “This is an intense record for us musically, which is the perfect vehicle for the ideas we are trying to present,” Explains frontman Andrew Schwab. “Picket Fence Cartel is a picture of irony - of an entity with a shiny exterior with a corrupt core. This album is about how power corrupts even the most pure hearts. This is especially true in the area of fame. Yet, so much of our culture is based upon attempts to gain it - from the self promotion of social networks to reality TV to the music industry itself. We are a society based on this obsession. But in the end we are the ones controlled and owned by the very things that we treasure. our souls hang in the balance, and Picket Fence Cartel asks one simple question: Who do you belong to?” “We have never believed in putting out records with one or two good songs,” explains songwriter/bassist Steven Dail. “Even though the industry is driven by iTunes singles, we still believe in the album as a whole. The problem today is not that consumers don’t buy records,

it’s that artists don’t write whole records. We try our best to go against that.” Project 86 is a band that has mastered the art of reinvention without deserting their foundation - which is why the band has remained so viable for so long. In fact one could argue that they have become the blueprint for bands seeking longevity in an industry that is anything but stable. After 13 years together, and over 350,000 career albums sold they still show no holes in their armor. In a world where perception is reality and reality isn’t always what it seems, seeking truth is vital to discover what lies be-

neath the surface. many in our culture who seek something authentic find disillusionment and corruption - from financial let-downs, to the abuse of power, to rejected Facebook friend requests. And yet, hope can be found in the most unlikely of packages. Project 86 reminds all with Picket Fence Cartel that it can be found by walking by faith, not by sight, in the world of false fronts in which we live. Everyone bows to something. Everyone answers to someone. Wherever your treasure lies, there your heart will be also. Who do you belong to?

The Jimmy Legs Band Just a few short years ago, a few musicians got together to make a memorable evening for a special friend. The event was such a success, they decided to keep the good times going and have been playing as The Jimmy Legs ever since. Each member adds a unique layer to the mix that results in a solid band that delivers some sweet tones.

of experience as both a drummer and recording engineer, working with some of the best talent in the Canadian music industry.

Niverville home boy Hardy Unrau pounds the driving low end on his bass guitar and provides the striking tenor vocals on classic rock songs. Hardy’s animated stage presence sets the tempo and energy of the band.

If you’re wondering where that sizzle and twang is coming from, that’s Blaine Repko on electric guitar. Although TJL rocks pretty hard, Blaine’s lead playing carries the unmistakable flavours of country and rockabilly.

Veteran drummer Bob Russell holds down the groove and provides the foundation of the band. Bob has decades

roads. You may notice a few songs you haven’t heard before. Just to keep it interesting, TJL even sprinkles the set list with a few original songs, once in awhile. As a special treat for Niverville, they’ll be accompanied by David Hasselfield, an extraordinary saxophonist who’ll turn up the heat with his aural improvisational skills. So get ready to celebrate. Over the past decade, HOJA has recorded five CD’s (selling over 25,000 units) and performed for more than 3,000 audiences (over 750,000 people) from British Columbia to Ontario. Our repertoire is filled with favorite songs from the 50’s to the present that span every style of music — from doo wop to rock, country to disco — no genre is safe from Canada’s favorite acappella heroes! vocals, tenor and baritone parts, instrument sounds such as guitars and trumpets, beatboxing and drum noises, and assorted sound effects. Audiences are often amazed to learn that every sound during the performance is being created live by the singers on stage… there are no backup tracks! In the summer of 2009 the group officially relocated to Calgary, AB, and plan to release their sixth professional CD in 2010.

Growing up in a small farming community in Southeast Manitoba, Jason Kirkness found his heart in country music. Since then he has been heavily influenced by the new Nashville sound while never straying too far from his roots. Currently Jason is working on an album with Jack Shapira to be released in 2010. The album features songs from Roots Three and Ole! writers including Bruce Wallace and Shawn Christian, as well as

two songs from up and comer, Steven Lee Olsen. Some new songwriting talent in Winnipeg’er William Prince, came along in time for the recording process. He has been on tour throughout 2008 and 2009 with his band and they will continue to connect with country music audiences through their live show across Canada in 2010. Dates are already confirmed in Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and the Northwest Territories. The band has been including more and more of the new songs as the recording procecs continues. A single will be released to CMT and country radio shortly.

Kyla Cederwall DATE

TIME

Saturday, June 12

8:00 p.m.

Kyla was born to sing. She first exhibited her talents in this area when, at the age of two, she sang for almost an entire eight hour road trip. That was just the beginning of her musical journey. By the age of four she was taking piano lessons which would form the foundation of her musical career. She began with Music for Young Children then continued on with the Royal Conservatory program. With some of the basics under her belt she began taking classical vocal training at the age of eight. This training paid off when, an eleven year old Kyla was allowed to sing with her church choir; the youngest person ever to do so. A few short years later she was part of her church’s youth group music team, which allowed her to both sing, and be a role model to young people. She has always had a heart for youth,

understanding the pressures of being a teenager and hopes that through her music she can inspire young people everywhere. Kyla is an over-achiever who held down two part time jobs in the retail industry and taught piano from young pre-schoolers to teenagers while attending high school. Despite this, she found time to perform in school musicals and still maintain a social life with the friends she cherishes as well as her family. Somehow through all this she managed to graduate high school a year before her contemporaries and is currently a Business Major in university. As with any journey, there are forks in the road and choices to be made. For a singer like Kyla, one of those choices was in the genre of music she wanted to sing. Her musical influences include Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Michael Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Michael Buble, U2, and many others. She tried several different styles from pop to R&B.

Shortly after the end of highschool she took a short break from music. After several months of not performing, not teaching, and not taking lessons she became re-energized and focused her talents back into writing music. It was during this time she discovered her love of country music. Although raised in the city of Winnipeg, Kyla’s always had a little bit of country in her spirit. She loves horseback riding, pick up trucks, cowboy boots and especially cowboy hats. Soon, she had more than a dozen songs written, each one becoming more polished than the previous one. However, with each line of lyrics and each measure of music that she wrote her desire to perform again was growing ever stronger. Kyla has now embarked on the next phase of her music career and is currently in the recording studio working with Jason Gordon as her producer/manager at the Juno award winning Studio 11 Entertainment in Winnipeg. Her new single Little Red Chevy was just released. She is also working on finishing her first record called Just Drive.

Life After the Fair First, and foremost Thank You Fair Committee for the outstanding work you do every year in putting together, in my humble opinion, Manitoba’s finest family summer fair. Also thank you to the hundreds of residents of our great community who step up every year to make this weekend possible. Living in a progressive, vibrant community is so much more than roads, water, and sewer. It’s about people who see the value in giving of there time to make Niverville a great place to live. Every year virtually every resident in Niverville and thousands of visitors gather on the street to enjoy first class family entertainment, sample a variety of foods, and hang out with friends and family. However when that final note sounds on another successful fair weekend, many

of us vanish into our own little world reappearing again the following year to “meet on the street”

And when the temperature starts dropping

As the Niverville Recreation Committee (NRC) our mandate is to promote Leisure, Recreation, and Wellness in our community, We want to encourage you to “stay on the street” and get involved in some of the many opportunities our community offers.

• Ringette

Examples of where you can “plug in” to activities that promote a well rounded healthy lifestyle are: • Soccer or baseball • Beach Volleyball (minus the beach) • Wrestling, Kick Boxing or Tae Kwan Do • Various fitness and dance classes • Running or book clubs • The Niverville Arts and Culture Group • Niverville Active Living • Go for a walk • or dust off that bike in the garage

• Cross Country Skiing • Tobogganing in Hespeler Park • Curling • Minor Hockey for boys and girls • Skating on our outdoor rinks One event coming up that promotes Leisure, Recreation, and Wellness is our 2nd Annual Showcase being held Wednesday, September 15th at the Heritage Centre. Besides a variety of exhibitors this year’s event will feature Fall Registrations for Clipper Ice Sports, NCI Fall and Winter Sports programs and Tae Kwan Do. Your involvement in this event or any other feedback would be welcomed by all of us at the NRC. Lets make 2010 the best ever by making healthy lifestyle choices, and yes there is life after the fair.

Pragmatic Stewardship Strikes a Balance The importance of the ‘Green’ or environmental focus can be seen everywhere in today’s world, from products that have their stewardship qualities highlighted in bold, to the newly created Green index on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It seems that everyone and every organization is jumping on the green-wagon and municipal governments are no exception. The struggle that often confronts municipal governments when they are exploring environmental opportunities is the misconception that good stewardship comes at the expense of the economic side. Whether this perception is increased costs or creating adversities for business, it is this paradigm that often leads to inaction by community leaders. The reality is that if a philosophy of ‘pragmatic stewardship’ is adopted, communities will find that there is a true balance available that will produce net returns on both the environmental and economic ledgers.

The Town of

Niverville has adopted this philosophy and has achieved some positives on both ledgers. As recently sanctioned members of the Seine Rat River Conservation District, the town was able to take advantage of subsidized backyard composters, which were made available to the residents. These composters were sold at the time that our waste management bylaw was rewritten, to limit households to 2 bags of waste per week. The town was faced with the cost escalations that many jurisdictions are seeing and were confident that with better stewardship, costs to the citizens could be held while reducing our collective footprint. The composters, along with campaigns to highlight the expanded community compost facility (for leaves, grasses and branches) and to highlight recycling (including donation of items in good repair to MCC), helped citizens stay within the bag limit easily. The result was surprising, as not only was the waste levy held for the 2009 year, but reduced in 2010 by over $10 per residence. While some

funding was required out of general operations to manage the compost and wood chipping, the net result was lower costs, a smaller contribution to the landfill, and the creation of backyard and community compost for flower beds, parks and vegetable gardens. When changes are made that have benefits on multiple ledgers, the community embraces them more inclusively and the result is a fuller success. Continuing to explore, led the community to install one of the first solar powered park lights in the province. Designed as a test of our challenging Manitoba winter, this solar light has kept the William Hespeler National Plaque lit since the Fall of 2009 and appears to a good solution for safety lighting in more remote park and trail areas. While initially more expensive than a traditional wired electrical device, the cost of electrical service, that is the wires, can be prohibitive in trails and park areas that are further from traditional development. Additionally, street lights installed by Manitoba Hydro cost a set fee in excess of $200 per year to run. While there will be many situations that still warrant a wired solution, additional safety and aesthetic lighting could be installed along trails and in parklands, without the large investment of servicing and the ongoing cost to operate. By adopting the pragmatic approach and looking for creative solutions, we are grabbing the proverbial ‘low-hanging fruit’ of better stewardship, and making impacts today that will affect the future.
