From the Organizers The Niverville Olde Tyme Country Fair organizing committee is happy to welcome you once again in 2011! Rain or shine... In a few short weeks it will be here. And in a weekend it will be gone. We would like to take two moments of your time. First to invite you all to our bustling community of Niverville, and to share in the incredible events that will be featured at Manitoba’s Premiere Street Festival of the summer. We cater to the youth,

and no matter who you are or what age, we will remind you of the fun and vitality of youth in all of us, so this event is just for you! An army of volunteers will come together from June 10 - 12 to thrill, entertain, and remind you what a wonderful place we live in, and how good people really are. This youth filled event is a

reflection of the pioneers of all backgrounds who forged a community “where you belong”. This magazine is full of information and the possibility of new friends and fond memories. For the second moment of your time, we would urge you not to miss this summertime classic. Let’s all “Meet on the Street”.

Best wishes for an unforgettable weekend,

Throughout the fair weekend, we would encourage visitors to explore the community beyond Main Street and experience the place we call home. If you are not sure where to start, chat with a local volunteer and ask some questions. Don’t worry, this is still small town where we don’t mind talking to strangers; because that way, we can number you among our friends.

From the Rec Director Welcome to Niverville! Whether you are a first time visitor or a long time resident; someone who only comes out to visit once in a while, or someone who has recently decided to make Niverville their home, we are happy to have you as part of our community. Niverville has experienced tremendous growth during the past few years, and if you have the opportunity to explore this peaceful, beautiful town you will soon realize why. Wonderful parks, green spaces and walking trails, and lots of recreational activities keep Niverville a vibrant, active community. We are currently in Phase 2 of a 5 year plan for Hespeler Park, a 90 acre park located off of 5th Avenue South and 4th Street South. Included in Phase 2 is outdoor fitness equipment, more asphalted trails and more playground equipment. Year round events held by the Niverville Recreation and Wellness Commission help to promote and encourage a healthy active lifestyle. During the month of February, we hold a family fitness month with lots of free activities, events and contests, and we will also be holding similar events during the summer. A wide variety of other classes and events are held year round and as your community connection for sports, recreation, arts, health and leisure,

programs and entertainment we love receiving suggestions from members of the community on what they would like to see offered. In addition to what is offered by the Recreation and Wellness Commission, there are many other sports, recreation, wellness activities and events in the community. Niverville truly is a vibrant, active and healthy community! Over the next year, the Community Recreation Plan Committee will be conducting surveys and round table discussions in order to complete a Community Recreation Plan. This is something that has been endorsed by Town Council, so please take the time to fill out the survey(s) and attend the meetings and discussions if you want your voice to be heard! SATURDAY JUNE 11, 2011

9 P.M. MAIN STAGE With the release of its fourth studio album, “Believe”, Emerson Drive secures its place as the premiere band in contemporary Country music. Their latest album Believe, produced by Josh Leo and Teddy Gentry (of the legendary country band Alabama), showcases all of the attributes that have fueled the group’s long, steady rise through the country ranks – lead singer Brad Mates’ passionately expressive vocals; the extraordinary musicianship of band mates Danick Dupelle (guitar), Dale Wallace (keys), David Pichette (fiddle) and Mike Melancon (drums); the quintet’s ability to choose firstrate songs, coupled with their own growth as songwriters; and their ability to capture in the studio the energy that has made them one of modern music’s must-see live acts.

“As we look back at the ups and downs through the last eight years in our business and personal lives,” says Brad, “it’s obvious they have molded us into something very strong.”

Believe, a co-release of The Valory Music Co. and Midas Records, captures the most extraordinary period in the group’s history. Their last album, Countrified, gave them their first #1 single (the smash “Moments”), earned them nominations for a dozen major awards, including a Grammy, and set the stage for Believe.

Emerson Drive’s success grew out of a dream that began in Brad’s hometown of Grande Prairie, Alberta. A selfless camaraderie has kept them united through the years, and a tireless work ethic continues to make them one of country’s busiest bands. Non-stop touring (their old bus recently passed the one-million mile mark) has won them fan loyalty that has been a key to their longevity.

Believe is literally a celebration of the band’s triumph over tragedy. The fact that it follows the breakthrough “Moments” is highly fitting, since that song’s story of redemption parallels the band’s triumph after losing a record deal, then losing a former member to suicide.

“Possibly the best band I’ve heard in years, as far as playing live on stage”

- Teddy Gentry

from the legendary band Alabama

The members of Emerson Drive moved to Nashville and released a 2002 self-titled album that featured two breakthrough Top 5 hits “I Should Be Sleeping” and “Fall Into Me,” as well as follow-up hit “Only God (Could Stop Me Loving You).”

The band also received their very first #1 video on CMT with “Fall Into Me.” They continued touring, and their story took a dramatic turn in the right direction when producer Leo and Alabama’s Gentry came to see them play. “They blew us away,” says Gentry, “possibly the best band I’ve heard in years as far as playing live on stage.” The video for “Moments” was named Video of the Year at Inspirational Country Music awards and The Canadian Country Music Awards. The song “Moments” also garnered the group their very first Grammy nomination. These accolades add to the long list of accomplishments by the band. With numerous nominations and awards from The Academy of Country Music, The Country Music Association, The Canadian Country Music Association, The Christian Country Music Association, The Junos (Canada’s Music Awards) and a “Reader’s Choice Award” from College Campus Activities for two successful college market tours during 2006 and 2007. “We’ve been together on the road for such a long time,” says Mike, “that it’s the same thing as a bunch of brothers growing up. You see everyone’s lives changing. “Everything is running on all cylinders,” adds Dale. “We believe this is our time.”

Head’s Debut Album, entitled “Save Me From Myself”, opened at #13 on Billboard’s Hard Rock charts, and still continues to impact the market. Head picked up a guitar and found his original calling. Barely out of high school, he helped found the band KoRn. The band quickly became a Grammy® award-winning, multi-Platinum selling band, and quickly rose to the top of the music world. While with KoRn, Head received six grammy nominations, winning two, while selling some 40 million records worldwide. In early 2005, Head rocked the music world by announcing his resignation from KoRn. At the time, Head was committed to moving away from his life of addictions to continue to care for his daughter Jennea, as a single father. Additionally, Head committed his life to Jesus Christ with the goal of touching people’s lives and giving back to those most desperately in

19

need. Only months from his KoRn exodus, Head traveled to India to open up his first “Head Home”, an orphanage that provided housing, food, and education to some 200 orphans in the most unreachable parts of India. Head also continued other philanthropic efforts.

With his newfound calling; Head is committed to changing the youth of the nations through his music and other entertainment ventures Additionally, during this time, Head began producing, composing and recording his

debut album. Head’s entire freshman effort was written, composed and arranged by Head himself, while also playing lead guitar and singing vocals. Head employed a few renowned musicians such as Josh Freese (drums - A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails) and Tony Levin (bass—Peter Gabriel) to assist with his effort. Head’s Debut Album, also entitled Save Me From Myself, opened at #13 on Billboard’s Hard Rock charts; and continues to impact the market. The album has been described as a “heavy metal epic, with a positive message.” Since then, he has written 2 books called, Washed By Blood and Stronger: 40 Days Of Metal And Spirituality. Currently, Head is in the process of composing his second solo album.

Show ‘n’ Shine Car Show

Vintage Bike Show The Antique Motorcycle Club of Manitoba and the Keystone Section of the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group have combined to showcase the finest display of rare vintage and classic motorcycles in Manitoba. They have chosen Niverville to be the venue for their 11th Annual Bison Classic Motorcycle Rally to take place at the Niverville Arena and Campground on July 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 2011. There will be a parade through town for the public on Saturday morning culminating in a Show n’ Shine on Main Street. It will be something to be seen (and heard!) indeed. Pre-war and postwar Indians, Harleys and BMW’s as well as later British Nortons, Triumphs and BSA’s plus real exotics like Vincents, Manx Nortons and AJS 7R racing bikes will all be there! For more information, contact: Tom - tomles@mymts.net. Watch for a sneek peek at the Niverville Fair as several members of the Antique and Vintage Motorcyle Clubs will ride out to showcase some beautifully restored bikes from a bygone era.

If you have a passion for old automobiles, we guarantee there will be at least one gem that will stir some golden memories. Expected to be the biggest ever, Niverville Fair’s Show and Shine will be held the Friday night of the Fair. Last years attendance was well beyond expectation, and indications are that we should break all previous records this year. The Show & Shine is open to all specialty vehicles. In the past we have had over 175 vehicles representing everything from Rat Rods to Concourse Restorations, from Big Fins to V-Twins. If you have a vintage car or any specialty vehicle (including

motorcycles), we invite you to come out and show it off at Niverville Fair’s Show & Shine. We will be offering the participants a roped off car show area which is available on a first come basis, (so try to come early!) The Car Show ‘n’ Shine is open to the public at 6:00 p.m. but will be open to Show & Shine participants one hour earlier. Our primary goal has always been to make the “Show ‘n’ Shine” fun and entertaining for both spectators and participants! DATE Friday, June 10

Community Driven Healthy Living Written by: Susan Watson, Community Dietitian, Certified Fitness Instructor and Board member of the Niverville Recreation & Wellness Commission. Staying fit and eating nutritious foods are key ingredients to healthy living. By living a healthy lifestyle we can prevent many serious chronic diseases that can impact our quality of life. Living healthier is an individual choice, but everyone can contribute to creating a community environment that supports healthy living. A healthy and active community can be very motivating and all you have to do is participate! Try some of these suggestions below to make Niverville more of an active and healthier community to live in. Be a neighborhood role model: • Dig up your over-grown perennials and give them to someone who needs outdoor plants, swap them with a neighbor or attend a plant swap. Yard work is an excellent way to stay fit and may motivate others to get active by beautifying their yards. • Form a neighborhood walking or biking group. Invite others to go for a walk or bike ride along the Crow Wing Trail, Hespeler park or just around town. • Form a neighborhood healthy dinner party group or healthy recipe exchange group. You can start by experimenting with a new fruit, vegetable or grain each month, like quinoa or kale.

Photo courtesy of: Soul Pix Photography

• Learn about where your food comes from by inviting friends to take a tour of a local farm with you, or visit a local farmer’s market and pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables. Share your purchases with a friend or neighbor who has never tried food directly from the farm. Share your skills/resources with your neighbors and the community: • Improve the accessibility of youth sports opportunities by volunteering to be a coach. • If you garden, teach someone how to plant and harvest a garden. If you don’t, ask someone you know who does garden to show you. • Share your excess garden produce with the local food bank “Helping Hands”. • Save time in the kitchen by forming a bulk cooking or freezer meal group with your friends. • Challenge yourself to take time each week and plan healthy meals, then share your meal plans with friends and family. Visit www.alittlenutrition.com for meal planning ideas and recipes. Support local community programs: • Track your walking miles by renting a pedometer through the town pedometer lending program. • Eat healthier by learning new cooking skills through taking a cooking class.

• Get fit by trying a group exercise class like yoga, dance or kickboxing or participate on a local sports team like beach volleyball. Note: The interest and support of these programs will help keep them running in the future. Stimulate change: • Ask for healthier food options and products at the grocery store or your favorite restaurant. The higher the demand for low fat/ low sodium options, the more likely businesses will offer these options to support their customers. Create a new community group: • The Niverville Recreation Commission can help you start up a new community interest group like outdoor photography or bird watching. Contact Donna Watts at 388-4600 (ext. 110) for more information or visit www.nivervillerecreation.com Remember… never stop trying to better your health or the health of those around you! The Rob Siemens Explosion The Rob Siemens Explosion is a rock quartet based out of Niverville, Manitoba. As early as junior high the four young lads would skip home merrily after school, eager to punish their parents’ eardrums with pre-pubescent rock and roll. For a short while the burgeoning musicians rejected role specialization, though the permanent line-up would later become Will Neufeld as keyboardist and lead vocalist, his twin brother James Neufeld as the drummer, Nick Rempel as the group’s guitarist, and Justin Kroeker as bassist. Initially playing smaller local venues, the band began to build a reputation and gain exposure. Throughout several years of gigging in and around Winnipeg, winning a “Battle of the Bands” competition, and recording original material in Vancouver and Winnipeg studios, the inquisitive youngsters would embark upon journeys to Europe, South America, and the States to find inspiration in other cultures. Filled with insight into new artistic possibilities, “The Explosion” decided to temporarily withdraw from the public eye to pursue the growth of musical knowledge and skills, as well as patchy facial hair. After this long period of musical maturation and general unsociability, the small-town rockers emerged well versed in the musical styles of groups ranging

from Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys, and The Beatles, to lesser-known bands like King Crimson and Camel. Nowadays, the Rob Siemens Explosion plays a melting pot of progressive and classic rock, funk, jazz-fusion, and whatever floats their proverbial boats. During recent live gigs, the four small town rockers have been playing, predominately, covers of wide-ranging rock groups, although their original songs are sometimes interspersed. Playing many songs from earlier eras, the boys are often chastised by their parents for once having scoffed at their “lame generation.” Hopeful for the future of modern music, “The Fearsome Foursome” plan to continue making their mark in the music scene before the onset of crippling arthritis inhibits their ability to do so. The Rob Siemens Explosion is ready, willing, and able to perform at your venue, show, function etc. and will be able to satisfy many of your song requests at said events. Niverville has a variety of sports for all ages to take part in, and is proud to be a Manitoba In Motion Community. Whether you have been involved in sports for years, or are looking for something new to try, Niverville provides some great choices and opportunities. Organized summer sports include beach volleyball, baseball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and flag rugby. There are also lots of fields and areas where you can enjoy an impromptu game of any of the above with friends. During our long winter months, check out the arena for some great hockey games, public skating, ringette and more! The curling club is a wonderful place to meet some new friends.

Wonder Shows Midway

Wonder Shows began as a midsize carnival which soon grew to accommodate 3 acres of rides, games, and fun food. In the spring of 2000, husband and wife, Ken and Anita Kiernicki, who have over 20 years of carnival experience under their belt, became the new owners of Wonder Shows. They vowed to continue with the philosophy Wondershows was reputable for – “Family Fun Entertainment”. As you stroll through our midway, you will notice Anita in her office taking care of all Wonder Shows operations. From customer service, to bookings, and staff management, Anita is meticulous about assuring smooth “behind the scenes” operations. “BIG BOSS”of the midway, Kenny, will

be walking with a big cable or toolbox in hand making sure your Wonder Shows experience is the best it can be for you and your family, Ken is also responsible for guaranteeing the 30 attraction fleet makes its way through the route safely and securely, then setting it up and having it properly checked over by his very friendly staff. Now in their 44th year, Wondershows has continuously maintained a clean, family owned and operated midway, traveling to major festivals throughout Manitoba . DATE

Parks & Facilities Hespeler Park

Niverville Recreation Complex

Edelweiss Park, located in the centre of Edelweiss crescent, is a beautiful, large open field perfect for pickup games of soccer, playing with your kids, etc.

Hespeler Park is a 91 acre park located in the South end of Niverville off Fifth Street South. Existing facilities include a beach volleyball court, mini and full sized soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, swing sets, a picnic shelter and the Crow Wing Trail. The Recreation and Wellness Commission have created a five year plan for Hespeler Park and are looking forward to many exciting new additions to the park over the next four years and beyond. (Phase 1, the addition of swing sets, a sky-runner and an accessible swing set is already complete).

Niverville also has several well-used facilities. The Niverville Recreational Complex, home of the Clippers, has a hockey arena, meeting room, upper viewing room and canteen facilities. The curling club, located next to the arena, has 3 sheets of natural ice, and a newly renovated meeting room downstairs. Niverville also has a Skateboard park and drop in centre on the East side of Town that is run by Youth for Christ.

Opa’s Park

Niverville Heritage Gardens

While Niverville has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years, we have strived hard to retain lots of green space and wonderful parks for the community’s enjoyment. While Hespeler park is the largest park in our community we also have several other parks & facilities nestled away, including:

Edelweiss Park

Opa’s Park is located on the North end of Roselawn Bay and can be accessed via a walkway on the North West corner of Roselawn Bay. Opa’s park offers playstructures, a swingset and a basketball court. In addition to these three main parks, we have several pocket parks, and a tot park (located on Third Street North and Fourth Avenue North)

Once again we are gearing up for a wonderful season at the Heritage Gardens. New this year in the gardens is a new purple martin house “The Hiebert House”. We still have room for memorial roses should you want to honour a loved one who has died. If you need more information, check out the town website or phone Annette @ 388-4679 or Janine @ 388-5190.

Banquet & Meeting Rooms John Henry’s meeting room and banquet hall, and the Niverville Heritage Centre are two beautiful facilities that are perfect for your meeting, conference, wedding or family gathering needs.

Health & Safety Niverville Medical Clinic

Fire & EMR Services

The local healthcare services and facilities provide exceptional care to the residents of Niverville. The Niverville Medical Clinic and the Niverville Primary Health Care centre are located in the Heritage building and together they provide a multidisciplinary team that brings together Public health, Mental health, Home Care, Midwifery, Laboratory services, Nurse triage and Chronic disease management as well as a full-time nurse, a Public Health nurse, and several doctors to deal with the community’s medical needs. Niverville also has a pharmacy, chiropractor, two Dental Centres, several massage therapists and the Niverville Physiotherapy & Sports Injury clinic.

The Niverville Fire Department is a volunteer based organization whose members show dedication to continued training and participation. The EMR service is a unique Niverville system that provides 24-7 emergency on-call status for our residents. The Fire and EMR services are fully 911 compliant and ready to respond when required. Through the Eastman Mutual Aid society, Niverville both cooperates and has the cooperation of surrounding departments when the needs arise.

COPP Niverville is fortunate to have a strong “Citizens on Patrol” program with many volunteers involved. COPP members act as additional “eyes and ears” for their community and the police, which assists in reducing crime.

RCMP Niverville is provided with round-the-clock police service. In case of emergency call 911 or contact the RCMP at 388-6091

First Responders The First Responders are a nonprofit group employed by South Eastman Health which serves our community 24/7 by responding to most medical/trauma emergencies.
