Key Industrial Market Trends In a keynote presentation at BlueTech Forum, which took place in Dublin, Ireland on 6-7 June 2017, Nijhuis delivered a keynote on Key Industrial Market Trends, taking delegates on a global tour of innovations addressing the food-water nexus, circular economy, water scarcity and business models needed to create and deliver projects.

Holterman believes the influence of other industries will ultimately crossover to the food and beverage industry, especially if you are operating in an area like Africa, India, China or Mexico where water scarcity is having a huge impact and some operations due to it size and magnitude are literally running out of sufficient water to deal with the growing demand for their products.

BlueTech Chief Executive Paul O’Callaghan took time ahead of the event to find out more about the perspective of CEO Menno M. Holterman of Nijhuis Industries on water reuse and sustainable water management.

Water security He explains, “Most investments in new plants is made with a financial horizon of 20-25 years, so you have to make sure you secure sufficient water to operate a plant, secure their license to operate and meet their growing production requirements. It’s not always easy, because you have to expend more energy in order to recover the water. So in terms of the water-energy nexus, it’s necessary to identify the tipping point between investing in additional water capacity versus the amount of energy you have to expend.

Water Challenges “Water challenges around the world are driven by many things,” says Menno M. Holterman, “but especially water scarcity, a lack of groundwater and aquifers drying up. I believe industry is making a great deal of progress, which is what we see in a lot of our projects around the world. “We see clients now actively asking for integrated solutions, including finance and operations & maintenance, which is a seismic shift. We also see a lot of industries, including those that have been invited to participate in BlueTech Forum, making water reuse, for example, mandatory.”

Industrial Reuse “Nijhuis is working with big multinational corporations such as Nestlé, Unilever and L'Oréal to explore the opportunities for sustainable reuse. Until about two years ago, water reuse was always requested in tender, however only implemented in water scarce areas, because of the high cost and not having a business case to pay back the investment. Today most of the large corporations have decided to make reuse mandatory, not only on greenfield projects, but on a lot of brownfield projects and upgrades and expansions of existing plants.”

Corporate barriers Holterman says he sees Nijhuis Industries’ key global accounts taking responsibility and starting to implement these kinds of measures. However, currently, the recycled water is mostly used for non-core processes and non-product water.

“It’s only a matter of time before some clients start reuse across production,” he says, “especially in areas of water scarcity. There are still a lot of brands that do not want the product water to be originated from treated effluent, so they want to discharge the water into a river and pick up the water hundreds of meters downstream, take it in, treat it and use it as product water.

But to take it directly from the effluent treatment plant back into the process or mix it with water originated from treated effluent is still a no-go area, especially in the food, pharma and cosmetics industry, for mostly psychological and marketing reasons.”

“In China we have been visiting cities surrounding Beijing that are responsible for mass food production and they are running out of water. They don’t have desalination capacity installed yet and they need alternative sources of water to feed hundreds-of-millions of people.

“The saltwater intrusion into the aquifers is a major issue – up to 40-50 km from the coastline – and I had meetings with mayors of cities of 800k to 1.2m inhabitants and the cities are growing in rapid pace. I visited one city where they have an additional 100,000 people arriving each quarter and they are looking into alternatives, not only by putting desal capacity next to a municipal WTP, but also water reuse.”

Internet of things “The internet of things and sensor technology are going to help us tremendously and we are already going to the next stage in developing software which will help us to predict the behavior of the plant if the characteristics of the water are changing. Sesa group works together with Nijhuis Since 30th of May, a Nijhuis IPF90 flocculation-flotation unit runs at Bioman Spa (in Maniago), part of the Sesa group (Societa Estense Servizi Ambientali Spa). Bioman Spa is located in the north eastern part of Italy about 50 km from the town of Pordenone.

The Sesa group currently processes more than 1,000,000 tonnes a year of GFT, making it one of the most important waste processing companies in Italy. Recently, the Sesa Group participated in two new GFT processing companies.

During the Dutch trade mission (20-23 June 2017) and in attendance of the Dutch Royal Family, Nijhuis signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Sesa Group, establishing our cooperation with them for coming years. This collaboration is focused on: education, information exchange, nutrient recovery and optimization of existing wastewater treatment systems.

An unscheduled increased production was the reason to use a rental to improve the subsequent treatment of wastewater treatment. This process is critical because the local government has made additional requirements for this type of processing. Bioman Spa processes 280,000 tonnes of GFT annually which produces a high-quality type of compost and energy (biogas, electricity and heath).

The effluent coming from the biological treatment is treated in a UF/RO system which turns the effluent to process water. 80% of this treated effluent is recycled and used for internal processes (composting, cleaning, etc.) and the remaining part will be discharged on the surface waters. With this process, Bioman Spa is an example of how a circular economy can function.

Safi Sana installs new AECOMIXTM-TAURUS to expand its waste conversion capacity Safi Sana Ghana Limited Company is expanding its faecal sludge treatment facilities in Accra by processing additional waste streams such as solid waste from the Ashaiman marketplace and the Accra abattoir. This enables Safi Sana to generate more energy that can be supplied to the national grid.

“Presently we are doing almost 1.6 megawatts on a daily basis; but there is the capability to do more if we have clean waste and we enlarge the size of the digester”.

For this the company completed a second large AECOMIXTM-TAURUS digester and cogeneration plant supplied by Nijhuis. The social enterprise runs a simple model that sees it collect faecal substance and solid waste, pass them through its factory machines to manufacture organic fertilizer for agricultural purposes, and energy to sustain the national electricity grid.

Water reuse To complete the circular system Safi Sana reuses the water that is collected from the digester drying beds. This water is used as irrigation water – free of pathogens, full of nutrients - to grow vegetable seedlings in its own greenhouse. The home grown organic fertilizer is used to stimulate the growth. The type of seedlings are selected in close consultation with local farmers and market queens.

More megawatts “We have a large anaerobic digester”, explained Country manager Raymond Ategbi Okrofu at Safi Sana Ghana, “which has room for all the different strings of waste so it goes through the process of fermentation and the gas is produced, and we direct the gas to power a generator”.

Realization of a MODULUTION-Boxframe for a dairy plant

Umalat is a modern cheese production plant in Russia, located just close to the Russian and Ukrainian border in the town of Sevsk.

The plug-and-play solution allows the client to get a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in a simple and clean solution, pre-installed on the frame blocks at the Nijhuis production facility.

The complete WWTP is connected with multiple modular boxframes.

Sandwich panels and top cover modules were easily mounted to the frame work, ensuring secure wind and watertight operation during all seasons.

Additionally, a growing number of customers hesitates to invest in peak capacity which might not be required for a longer period of time having a negative impact on the return on capital. With the unique and modular Nijhuis MODULUTIONS design philosophy, they can anticipate faster to these variations.

Nijhuis installed AECOMIXTM-IR system for Jacobs Russia In August 2015 Nijhuis Russia & CIS successfully won the contract with Jacobs Russia, LLC for WWTP. Jacobs Russia, LLC is a part of newborn Jacobs Douwe Egberts, one of the largest global tea and coffee companies.

In summer 2017, Nijhuis supplied and installed to Jacobs Russia, a freeze –dried coffee production site near St. Petersburg, the first ever anaerobic IR system in Russia, followed by an aerobic treatment system with an activated sludge DAF unit.

The Nijhuis AECOMIXTM-IR system is a highly loaded anaerobic system with a minimized footprint. The technology includes a simple and efficient recirculation offering a more compact, robust treatment system. Nijhuis upgraded the existing installation to new effluent standards. Furthermore, a side effect of the system is the biogas generation from the wastewater.

After realizing all the steps from the Nijhuis added values services philosophy such as project management, engineering, transport and installation, the system is currently being commissioned.

The pre-fabricated modular boxframe allowed Umulat to focus on their production while trusting the design and quick start-up of the plant to Nijhuis. Sharp's Brewery wastewater treatment plant has been upgraded As part of the operation and maintenance contract of the Sharp's Brewery AECOMIXTM-UASB anaerobic treatment plant, Nijhuis Industries UK & Ireland have also been undertaking a process of continued improvement to optimize the process, make it more robust to changes in influent and reduce OPEX. As part of this process, a project involving the installation of the following equipment has just been completed.

Benefits of the plant upgrade The upgrade resulted into improved plant stability and fewer impacts on brewery production. Because of the reduced granular sludge production to sewer, also the discharge costs are reduced. Since an accurate polymer dosing, there will be less granular sludge carryover. Additionally, the biological treatment is now better protected from catastrophic loading.

Construction of Singapore's 4th desalination plant begins in Marina East The construction of Singapore's fourth desalination plant began on Thursday (Jun 29) in Marina East. It is the first dual-mode desalination plant, meaning it can treat both freshwater from the Marina Reservoir and seawater, depending on weather conditions.

Currently, freshwater from reservoirs is processed at eight water works across Singapore, while seawater is treated at SingSpring and Tuaspring desalination plants.

With the new plant, on rainy days when the water level in the reservoir is high, the excess rainwater that is discharged into the sea can be treated for use. Designed by Keppel Infrastructure Holdings, which will also build, own and operate the Marina East desalination plant, the facility will be able to produce around 30 million gallons of fresh drinking water per day, enough to fill about 55 Olympic-sized swimming pools when it is completed by the end of January 2020.

Eight Nijhuis concrete High Rate Dissolved Air Flotation modules Nijhuis is currently designing and will realize eight High Rate i-DAF modules as pre-treatment for the seawater. This includes the inline mixers for coagulant and flocculant dosing and top mixers for the reaction tanks, followed by the corrugated plate packs, skimmer systems and robust Nijhuis i-AERATION system.

This chamber then pumps the water to the plant through a 1.8 km underground pipeline above the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE). Such a system has been years in the making – a similar dual-mode technology has been in operation since 2007 at a plant in Pasir Ris to test it out before applying it on a larger scale at Marina East.

North-American market chooses Nijhuis again Three successful project examples

Pre-treatment system to a Canadian based potato processor Nijhuis supplied a complete flocculation-flotation system with an electrical control panel and associated equipment and pretreats oily potato processing wastewater for TSS and O&G removal.

Nijhuis was chosen because of the relationship with the owners engineer, experience with potato processing primary treatment, and the vast amount of global references within the industry. The system is working very well with high customer satisfaction.

Turn-key project completed for a large U.S. bacon processor Nijhuis completed a turn-key project for the largest independent bacon processor with six combined food manufacturing plants. The involved technical solution utilizing existing wastewater treatment infrastructure and reconfigured the process and includes a Nijhuis rental flocculation-flotation system that allows for a more stable and robust treatment plant.

The system has been successfully operating for a number of months and Nijhuis continues to work to further improve the treatment operations.

Canadian dairy processor chooses Nijhuis Two pre-treatment projects have been successfully commissioned for a dairy processor, who is the second largest dairy coop in Canada owned by over 1,200 farmers. The scope of supply consisted of flocculation-flotation systems used to remove TSS, FOG, and TP. For over ten years a solid Nijhuis system is in operation at another location, which convinced the customer to choose Nijhuis again. The plants have been successfully operating for a few months and meeting all process conditions.

The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant is also the first to feature green spaces that can be used by the public for recreation. All of the plant's water treatment equipment will be located underground, topped off by a green rooftop that can accommodate about 700 people. Built on a three hectare plot of land, the plant will also be integrated with the Eastern Coastal Park Connector Network that bridges East Coast Park and Gardens by the Bay East.

During dry periods when the water level in the reservoir is low, water from the sea will then be channeled to the plant to be desalinated. Water from both sources will be filtered from the get-go, removing larger impurities before it goes through a “dual flow chamber”.

Fat recovery from industrial wastewater as biofuel Flotation sludge challenges

What is flotation sludge?

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is often applied to treat industrial wastewater containing high oil & grease by which TSS removal of 45-70% and oil & grease removal of 50-80% can be achieved without chemicals.

Flotation sludge is a mixture of water, solids and fat. When treating wastewater, primary treatment is needed to reduce the solids and fat content in the water.

However, fat which is part of the dry matter constituent in the sludge, is often neglected, even though it has high potential as an economically valuable resource such as heating fuel, biofuel, cosmetics, and/or co-substrate for anaerobic digestion.

How to separate flotation sludge?

How can fat be recovered from the wastewater?

Fat can be recovered with Nijhuis AECO-FAT, a total sludge management solution including a dissolved air flotation unit, followed by a disconnector and separation into a liquid fat, a water and a solids fraction. This way an economical value has been added to the recovered product.

With the recovery of fat, the Nijhuis AECO-FAT solution converts flotation sludge into valuable products and saves sludge disposal and chemical costs.

As sludge minimization is a very important concept in wastewater treatment, we developed several profitable business cases based on the incoming and outgoing requirements, operational costs and capital investment costs.

After the DAF system, heating is the first step in the process where all the fat is liquefied. The second and third step are to separate the solids and water. Separation techniques such as a tricanter are required to guarantee a thorough separation of all three phases and substantially increase the yield of fat.

Where can Nijhuis AECO-FAT be applied?

Nijhuis AECO-FAT can be applied to typical wastewaters containing high concentrations of fat including wastewaters of slaughterhouses, protein processing plants (like bacon) and confectionary plants.

Depending on consumables costs, an average payback period for an AECO-FAT solution of two years can be achieved.

The separated water will flow back to the wastewater treatment plant, whereas the separated solids-proteins can be utilized as fertilizer. The separated fat obtained can be used for various value-added purposes such as fuel for steam boilers or biofuel. The fat is also a tradecommodity with a high value.

JOR INVESTMENT OF N IN ITALIAN WATER INFRASTRUCTURE Following the successful Dutch trade mission to Italy, between 20 and 23 June 2017 and coinciding with the state visit by King WillemAlexander and Queen Máxima, the Italian government announced a major investment of €8 billion in water infrastructure. This is, of course, a field in which Dutch expertise leads the world.

“The Netherlands and Italy face the same challenges on climate change, food security and sustainability,” Ms. Lilianne Ploumen, foreign trade minister said. She added that; “Stepping up the exchange of knowledge and experience could greatly benefit both businesses and society in general in both our two countries”.

Nijhuis Industries involvement The Water delegation was headed by Menno M. Holterman, CEO Nijhuis Industries, who actively participated in a Water Seminar & Matchmaking event on Wednesday June 21st in Rome and a Water Round Table about 5 important water related topics in Milan. Also present was Sales Director, Gabriele Versolato representing Nijhuis Industries in Italy.

The Water Seminar set the scene with the main European water challenges. It explained the Italian and Dutch ambitions and actions on these challenges and identified specific topics for Italian-Dutch cooperation and partnerships between the governments, knowledge institutes and enterprises.

The roundtables in Milan were focusing on join business opportunities in Italy, the Netherlands, Central European countries and countries overseas where both Italy and the Netherlands have strong historical ties and paved the way for concrete follow-up actions and meetings during the Amsterdam International Water Week starting October 30.

Trade flows and water infrastructure The total value of trade flows between the Netherlands and Italy is more than €27 billion, with foodstuffs notably making up 8% of exports and 10% of imports.

The importance of this sector prompted Ms. Ploumen and the King and Queen to visit the ‘Eataly’ food hall where the focus is on high-quality food. Not only Italian delicacies are on offer there, but also Dutch cuisine. “Italy is the Netherlands’ fifth-largest destination for goods exports” said Ms. Ploumen. “Many people aren’t aware of it, but Italy is one of our major economic partners.”
