Sludge Management Solutions

How to reduce your sludge up to 50% dry solids? Nijhuis Screw Press - Nijhuis Electro Osmosis Common challenges regarding sludge management are high costs for sludge transportation, sludge storage, and sludge disposal. Therefore, municipalities and industries are constantly seeking for dewatering solutions to reduce the weight and volume of sludge. Typically the sludge is dewatered to 15-25% dry solids with mechanical dehydrators, such as a decanter or a screw press. With additional Nijhuis Electro Osmosis (NEO) installed after the mechanical dehydrators, the sludge cake is further dewatered and reduced in volume by more than 50%. With NEO installed after the existing mechanical dehydrators, the sludge cake is reduced in volume by more than 50%, saving costs of sludge transportation, storage and disposal. In addition, the NEO treated cake is self-sustainable for incineration due to its higher energy content, which in turn typically reduces the gate fee at the incineration plant. A business case can be derived based on individual conditions including the dry solids input, yearly sludge production, costs of sludge disposal and electricity. Indicative calculations show that the (electrical) energy demand of NEO is modest compared to the required (residual) heat per m3 evaporated water.

Removal of Medical Residues

How to remove micropollutants (i.e. medical residues) from municipal wastewater? Nijhuis MediOxi - Nijhuis MicroOxi

Over the past few years more and more researches are conducted about our water-quality and the pollutants that are present in our surface- and drinking water. Due to the recalcitrant nature of some of these compounds, like medicine, pesticides or functional chemicals for different industries, the concentration of these compounds is increasing in our water. A large group of these compounds are harmful to the aquatic life and are in some cases already affecting human health. Current wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove these compounds and it is therefore necessary to come up with additional solutions to remove or prevent presence of these toxic compounds in our water. In many European countries, the attention on different technologies to remove these micropollutants is increasing.

Multiple technologies, comprising filtration, ad-/absorption processes, biological processes and chemical oxidation processes, have been successfully used to do so. These technologies can be used in concepts to treat water from various sources. At these treatment plants a large quantity of water and a combination of domestic, industrial and in many cases also rainwater is treated. Therefore, these compounds are present in trace concentrations in large volumes of water. Treatment of these large volumes means large-scale installations which are logically costly. Nijhuis Industries has therefore focused on the development of solutions for either decentral and central treatment of medical residues. Depending on the local situation and the number of medical residues in the wastewater, a decentral (MediOxi) and/or central (MicroOxi) treatment solution can be chosen to effectively remove harmful compounds like medicines. The Nijhuis MediOxi solution The MediOxi solution of Nijhuis Industries is a treatmentat-the-source focused solution for medicine and micropollutant removal. It uses different filtration and separation techniques and a combination of oxidative techniques to convert recalcitrant compounds into biological degradable molecules. Using sufficient dosing and the correct combination of techniques, it is possible to reach significant reduction of medical residues or convert them so they can be further degraded inside a conventional wastewater treatment plant. The solution can be completely containerized and placed at sources like hospitals, elderly homes, or pharmaceutical companies. Nijhuis Industries has already proven to be able to remove a wide variety of medicines and x-ray contrast media effectively (>80%) from hospital wastewater. The Nijhuis MicroOxi solution For the treatment of micropollutants at sewage treatment plants, Nijhuis Industries has developed the MicroOxi solution. Depending on the local situation, a smart combination of oxidation technologies will be chosen to effectively remove a wide variety of medicines of more than 80%. With intelligent ozone dosage regulation based on organic load of the water. It is a customized, efficient and extensible solution based on the pollution level in the wastewater towards a sustainable and resilient future.

Chemical-free coagulation How to implement chemical-free coagulation? Nijhuis i-NEC

Currently many industrial companies and municipalities are facing challenges in treating the wastewater in an environmentally friendly manner reaching high effluent quality sufficient for discharge or even with a possibility for reuse, in this way contributing to the global water crisis. At present, electricity prices in certain regions around the world are being reduced, thus promoting electrical-driven rather than chemical-consuming process applications. i-NEC is designed to compete with the current chemicalintensive processes as well as with the conventional electrocoagulation systems. The reactor is distinguished with its advanced design of a closed system operated free of foam formation and gases build-up. i-NEC is unique with the short residence time of a few seconds, thus resulting in a small footprint and possibility to treat a high amount of wastewater. The system is very flexible and can be applied in a combination with different solidliquid separation techniques and further with a variety of membrane technologies. The system has the potential to be applied as a pre-treatment solution as well as a tertiary treatment step in a wastewater treatment concept.

Installation of the 8 Nijhuis concrete High Rate i-DAFs is reaching the final stage Singapore’s 4th Desalination plant | Marina East

The installation of the 8 concrete Nijhuis High Rate i-DAFs at the Singapore 4th Desalination plant is reaching the final stage. The construction of the desalination plant began on 29th June 2017, with construction expected to be completed in 2020. The first of its kind in Singapore and anywhere around the world, the Marina East Desalination Plant (MEDP) will be a large-scale, dual-mode plant, which will treat both freshwater from Marina Reservoir, or seawater, depending on wet or dry weather conditions. When completed, the plant will be able to produce up to 137,000m3 of fresh drinking water on a daily basis. A Nijhuis concrete High Rate i-DAF solution with plate packs guarantees maximum and efficient solids and air bubbles removal, taking primary, secondary and tertiary solids-removal technology to the next level. In comparison to DAF units without plate packs for desalination plants, a DAF unit with plate packs reduces footprint requirements by 30-60%. This also ensures maximum protection of any downstream treatment. Especially for the purification of sea and surface water above 800 m3/hr / 20 MLD, pre-treatment solutions have to be compact, robust, stable and modular at the same time.

The Nijhuis High Rate i-DAF system is based on the innovative i-AERATION system which forms fine air bubbles for the separation of particles ensured by to the patented non-clogging depressurization nozzles. Micro air bubbles are dosed in and before the inlet construction of the DAF unit.

Van Werven plastics is reusing water at three different locations with the Nijhuis Water Reuse Solutions Van Werven cleans plastics as raw materials. They recycle rigid plastics in various locations throughout Europe. This allows them to produce high-quality secondary raw materials for the manufacturing industry. Every year they process 150.000 tons of post-consumer rigid plastic materials. Examples of these are garden furniture, crates and pipes collected from construction waste, industrial waste and recycling centers. This recycled post-consumer material is used to create new raw materials. The cleaning process of plastics consists of shredding and spray-washing or bath-washing ensuring a large amount of polluted wash water. This water is treated with a flocculation/flotation solution and the sludge is treated with a screw press. Around 90% of the effluent of the flocculation/flotation solution is then reused again as wash water. Every day around 10% of the treated water leaves the system via the produced sludge and the cleaned plastics. The same amount of fresh water is added, making this a closed loop water system. The last years, Nijhuis Industries installed three Water Reuse Plants at three different Van Werven locations to meet their sustainability requirements due to the good relationship and results. Currently, all three plants are monitored from the Nijhuis i-MONITORING center and Nijhuis provides Van Werven every week a monitoring report to maximize the performance of the plants. Additionally, Nijhuis i-MAINTENANCE service engineers are visiting the plants several times a year to inspect the system and consult the operators. The headquarters of Van Werven has remote access to their WWTP’s via the NI-CONNECT to support their local offices.

The solid Nijhuis Water Reuse Solutions which are located in Lanaken (Belgium), Biddinghuizen (the Netherlands) and Gromadka (Poland) reduces the total water footprint, effluent discharge costs and sludge discharge costs. At the location in Poland Nijhuis Industries is also treating the terrain run-off water with a biological MBBR solution (BIOCTOR-MBBR) and activated sludge flotation unit. After the treatment, a part of the effluent is infiltrated into the ground. The other part of the effluent will go to the Nijhuis Water Reuse Plant. Now, at one of its largest factories in the world, this trendsetting cosmetics leader the global cosmetics company wants to proceed further in reducing the environmental footprint of its production plant. As well as reducing waste quantities, L’Oréal has committed to a 60% reduction in water consumption, per finished product, by 2020 (using a 2005 baseline). Achieving this ambitious goal is only possible by optimization of water consumption and by recycling water on site. The solution Nijhuis Industries has now completed the installation of the water reuse plant which covers the civil works and technology, consisting of filtration, flocculation, flotation, MBR treatment, reverse osmosis and dewatering system. Due to the selection of the proposed design, the customer will reuse almost 50% of water from 400 m3 wastewater per day. The reused water will be used by the production plant to wash manufacturing tools and cooling processes. To meet the customer demands, the teams of L’Oréal and Nijhuis developed, in close consultation, not only an installation which will be future-proofed, but also designed an attractive operators’ building which fits into the environment of the production facility of L’Oréal. The background After a successful water reuse pilot trial in July 2017, L’Oréal commissioned Nijhuis as its partner to build one of the most modern and state-of-the-art water reuse plants at its Warsaw factory, the largest of it’s kind in the world. During the pilot study, Nijhuis proved its credentials as a partner by deploying the highest level of technological support and application knowledge across the complex scope of the turnkey project.

New production facility and wastewater treatment plant of Biovet Peshtera has officially started! A nature-driven and smart extended WWTP design

On 16 September 2019, Biovet Peshtera officially opened the doors of a new plant for the production of pharma products and animal feeds additives. The new production facilities will provide 200 new jobs for high qualified worker and specialists. The project fit’s Biovet’s growth strategy in the EU and their ambition to grow marketshare around the world. As a result of the successful project implementation, the production and fermentation output of the Company will be increased up to 50%. Due to the fast response and the smart design, Nijhuis has been awarded the construct and realize the complete installation.

A nature-driven design Located deep into a picturesque valley in the Rhodopi Mountains, the aim of the wastewater treatment plant design was to completely surround the system with the natural wooded scenery, and to use the power of gravity as far as possible within the design. The wastewater will be pumped from the factory level in the valley floor, up to near the top of a hill. With a height increase of 50 meters, the WWTP will be completely surrounded by the woods.

After the wastewater is pre-treated, a biological treatment system will use the power of nature’s gravity as a ‘cascade system’ and will automatically flow 50 meters down to the point where the water was originally pumped. A new DAF system will be used as final polishing step. The factory is located in the town of Peshtera, Bulgaria, 120 km southeast of the country’s capital, Sofia.

Client benefits / Nijhuis impact Clean water to be discharged into the river Smart reuse of existing concrete WWTP infrastructure, reducing investment cost Use the power of nature’s gravity to process the wastewater
