Ashley MacIsaac, one of the most celebrated Canadian roots musicians of all time, comes to New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts on Saturday, June 1, 7:30 p.m. The performance is at Steinmann Mennonite Church Hall; for tickets see www.newhamburglive.ca. Joining MacIsaac on stage for a few songs will be the New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir, and award-winning Canadian step dancers Bridget Norris-Jones and Heather Norris. Having sold in excess of 500,000 albums, Ashley has garnered international acclaim by playing the fiddle in that hard-nosed, traditional Cape-Breton style, while adding his
own spin, mixing genres and updating Celtic music to appeal to a broader spectrum of fans. Considered something of a local legend and prodigy by the time of his impressive 1992 debut Close To The Floor, Ashley broke through to the mainstream with the doubleplatinum genre-bending Hi, How Are You Today? in 1995. International radio play for the single, Sleepy Maggie, and a regular slot on MuchMusic made Ashley an instant Canadian icon. Ashley has just completed a new collection of tunes with Barbara MacDonald Magone called Beautiful Lake Ainslie, a collection of traditional tracks performed with Piano and Fiddle, recorded in Windsor at Polaris Studios this past June. Much has been said about the antics of the enfant terrible of the Fiddle, but only because he has had international success and notoriety from an early age and grew up under the spotlight as one of the most dynamic fiddlers from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. MacIsaac constantly pushed the traditional styles of Celtic music as he grew up and incorporated rock, pop, and everything imaginable in between. Ashley has performed in the opening ceremonies at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics to a worldwide audience and with Bridget Norris-Jones and Heather Norris artists such as Phillip Glass and The Chieftains. He has appeared on the Conan O’Brian show, the Today Show and has been a spotlight at international festivals, theatres and halls all over the world. www.newhamburglive.ca 3
Canadian star Rod Beattie brings Erin Bardua will open the show with “Songs from Shakespeare” Iconic stage star and Stratford Festival veteran Rod Beattie opens this year’s New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts with his one-man performance celebrating the wonderful language of William Shakespeare, “Will Power”. The venue is Steinmann Church, Monday evening, May 27, at 7:30 p.m. The event will also feature soprano Erin Bardua, singing “Songs from Shakespeare”. Rod is best known to Canadians as “Walt Wingfield” – and all his friends and neighbours – in the seven plays in the Wingfield Farm series. His fame is much deserved – Rod plays every character in all seven heartwarming comedies, which are written by Dan Needles, and directed by Rod’s brother, Douglas Beattie. Rod is the winner of the 1991-92 “Dora”
Award (best performance by an actor in a leading role) for the Wingfield plays. However, in spite of his perpetual appearances as Wingfield, Rod’s resumé is much more extensive Erin Bardua that this sevenplay menu. Three-time Juno winner David
New Hamburg Live! is delighted to welcome David Francey back to our Festival. David performed here at the first New Hamburg Live!, in 2009, instantly winning a room-full of ardent fans. His story telling, song writing and performance are warm, wry, emotional, amusing and altogether entertaining. David will perform Tuesday, May 28, at 7:30 pm at Steinmann Mennonite Church. Since leaving construction and recording Torn Screen Door in 1999, Scottish-born Canadian, David is recognized as one of today’s finest singer-songwriters. David is a three time JUNO award winner and also had the honour of receiving the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award. In the last few years he took home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award. Francey has released nine CDs to date. His
most recent, "Late Edition" has garnered much praise - "its a corker" (Penguin Eggs Magazine) - along with a JUNO nomination and two Canadian Folk Music nominations. "David’s straightforward songs tell honest stories of real people and real places. Poetic perception and a keen eye for the heart of the matter are trademarks of the man and his music. His songs and stories are a direct connection for audiences seeking depth and meaning in the day-to-day," said a review from the Shelter Valley Folk Festival David was born in Ayrshire, Scotland where he got his first taste of the working life as a paperboy. At age 10 he was devouring the newspapers he delivered, establishing a lifelong interest in politics and world events while developing the social conscience that forms the backdrop of his songs. He was twelve when his family immigrated to Toronto. He says he can trace his love of the land, the history, and the people of his adopt-

Francey returns to NH Festival ed country to weekend family drives exploring southern Ontario. Music played a large part in these family outings. They sang traditional Scottish tunes as they drove through the Canadian countryside. His attachment to Canada grew with travel. He hitched across the country three times, then thumbed his way to the Yukon. This attachment surfaces in his songs of rail lines, farms, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. He grew to understand the people while working in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships. These experiences colour his first CD, Torn Screen Door, with songs like Hard Steel Mill, Gypsy Boys, and Working Poor and his second, Far End of Summer, with Highway, Flowers of Saskatchewan and February Morning Drive. In concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following.

David lives with his wife, artist Beth Girdler and in the quiet but charming Lanark Highlands in southern Ontario. They are visited often by their son Colin, daughters Amy and Julia and grandson Tristan.

Ken Whiteley and friends promise In the first-ever season of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, in 2009, the Wednesday night Gala was created as the opening night of the five-day event. It says a lot about the success of the Festival that the mid-week Gala is now also in the middle of an event that has grown to include an entire week, and more than a dozen performances and exhibitions. New Hamburg Live! organizers recognize that they now have the opportunity both to bring new talent and events to the community, and also to celebrate relationships that have grown over the five years of the Festival. None of those relationships are warmer than that with Ken Whiteley. Ken was featured in the first two gospel concerts of the Festival, and also at the Jazz Night in 2012. But executive director Paul Knowles comments that “It’s ironic that we’ve had Ken doing superb performances in gospel and jazz

a great New Hamburg Live! Gala events, but we’ve never had him at what he does best – Bluegrass.” That oversight will be remedied on Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m., at the New Hamburg Live! Gala. Ken and an assortment of friends – including New Charlene Nafziger Hamburg’s own Charlene Nafziger, who has played with Ken during previous New Hamburg Live! Festivals, and at Hugh’s Room in Toronto – will join Ken’s band for the evening. What an evening it will be! The Gala will
also include featured work from the Festival’s Visual Art Show, a silent auction that will include works by the artists from the show and other great items (theatre tickets, wine, autographed books and more), and refreshments. Ken Whiteley is a Canadian music legend. He has been awarded with a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Genie Award for best original song in a Canadian film, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals. His work has been nominated for multiple Juno, Maple Blues, and Grammy Awards. Admission to the New Hamburg Live! Gala is only $25. The Gala gets underway at 7 p.m. at the New Hamburg Community Centre, 251 Jacob Street. New Hamburg Live! Musical Director Vicki St. Pierre is a person of remarkable and varied talents. She has achieved a stellar reputation as a conductor, while as a soloist, Vicki is a mezzo soprano of astonishing stylistic range, equally at home in operatic performance or gospel. Vicki St. Pierre Vicki’s list of performances and recordings is lengthy; she has appeared with many of the leading orchestras across North America, and has sung works by composers ranging from Handel to Mozart to Zelenka to Bach. Two of Vicki’s recent projects have included The Toronto Consort’s recording, “Navidad”,
and as a soloist on the CBC broadcast of Bach’s Mass in B Minor, with the Elmer Iseler Singers. Joining Vicki in recital at New Hamburg Live! is lutenist Lucas Harris. Lucas is a regular performer with Toronto’s Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He works with dozens of early Lucas Harris music groups across North America, teaches on two continents, and directs the Toronto Continuo Collective. In the creative process, all the performers work together with a unique synergy, collectively adding their ideas and improvisational styles to each new composition brought forward by composers Oliver Whitehead and Stephen Holowitz. ARP is at the forefront of a new blend of world influences which result in a fresh and highly
charged integration of musical styles. Collaboration began in 1997 when the core group was started by Oliver Whitehead for the first performance and subsequent CBC recording of his composition “A Mass for All Creatures”. Since then, the Antler River Project has developed a vast array of original material while working with a host of world music, jazz, classical and choral musicians. The CD Latitude 43, named for the geographical site of the Forks of the Thames, highlights the compositions that have become group and audience favourites, and demonstrates the range and versatility of the group.

Authors discuss importance of ‘place’ New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is committed to including a wide variety of the arts in our annual festival. While music is most prominent, we are pleased to present the work of visual artists, actors, and also writers. In 2013, our literary event is “A Matter of Place” – a number of local authors will discuss the importance of the writing about a locale, an environment, that they know and love. Participants will include both fiction and non-fiction writers; authors of fiction will discuss the starting place for imagination that real locations present; non-fiction writers will

Choral workshop singers will The 2013 edition of New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts marks the fifth consecutive year that the Festival has included a choral workshop and mass choir performance. This year, participants in the Saturday afternoon workshop will have the unique opportunity to sing with fiddler extraordinaire Ashley MacIsaac during his concert, Saturday evening! The Choral Workshop will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at St. George’s Anglican Church in New Hamburg. The New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir will perform during the Saturday evening concert, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church Hall.

Once again, the choral workshop will be led by New Hamburg Live! Music Director Vicki St. Pierre. Vicki, a noted operatic mezzo soprano, has also crafted a career as one of the finest conductors in Canada. Coincidentally, two of Vicki’s choirs are performing at this year’s Festival – the Choir of St. James Cathedral, Toronto (a 20-voice professional choir), and London Pro Musica (a 48-voice auditioned choir from London, Ontario). New Hamburg Live! executive director Paul Knowles says, “We are beyond lucky to have someone like Vicki play such a vital role in our Festival, and the people who attend our choral workshop get an incredible experience

London Pro Musica brings soaring Since its launch in 2009, the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts has featured a handclapping, joyous gospel concert as its finale. This year is no exception – but we know the concert itself, Sunday afternoon, June 2 at 3 p.m. will indeed be exceptional. In the fall of 2012, London Pro Musica, an auditioned classical choir, broke with its tradition and performed a full-tilt gospel concert, led by its enthusiastic new Music Director, Vicki St. Pierre – who is also Music Director of New Hamburg Live! The concert brought down the house at the Aeolian Hall in London, and New Hamburg Live! organizers promptly booked the choir to
close our 2013 Festival. We also booked the guest soloist – the talented Denise Pelley, a great friend of New Hamburg Live! who has been featured in our two most recent gospel concerts, as well as in our night at the Jazz Room. A record number of visual artists will participate in the 2013 New Hamburg Live! Art Show. Exhibitors will include artists who have been part of the event since it began; professional artists who are new to the show; and more than 16 members of the Artists of Stonecroft – painters who live in New
H a m b u r g ’ s Stonecroft community, and who study together and paint there. The Stonecroft section of the exhibition is organized by David Connolly; each Stonecroft artist will exhibit one work – they will be shown at the New Hamburg Library and at Kathie Jordan Design. On tap for New Hamburg Live! in 2014 The sixth annual New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts will bring the best in music, drama, art and literature to New Hamburg, from May 26- June 1, 2014. And while our attention is still on the amazing line-up we have planned for this year, 2013, we can already announce some details of events deeper in the calendar. In 2014, we will welcome back the astonishing Factory Arts String Quartet, who delighted classical music fans, and newcomers to the genre alike, in 2012. We have also booked the Toronto company,

Essential Opera, to bring their very funny and beautifully performed production called “Two Weddings and a Funeral� to our 2014 Festival. This program – including Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi� and Essential Opera’s Donizetti’s “Il camMaureen Batt is featured in panello� – drew rave “Two Weddings and a Funeral� reviews, and a lot of delighted laughter when it was staged in Toronto this year. But before the full Festival next year, New Hamburg Live! will also be reviving the eightyear tradition of presenting Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol� during the 2013 Christmas season.
