Just when you thought it couldn’t get better... Each year, when the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is over, we ask ourselves: “What do we do to top this one?” The answer is always, “We can’t; it was terrific.” And it always has been terrific. None the less, we keep finding ways to make it even more terrific. For instance, this year we proudly present tenor John McDermott. Months before the Festival, we heard of people coming thousands of miles for this concert. We welcome the Canadian Brass, one of the most honoured ensembles in the world. We’ve got a full opera, performed in concert, with chamber orchestra. There’s Dixieland Jazz, the return of actor and storyteller Barry MacGregor, a fabulous string quartet, a superb choral group with a love for pop music.

Plus, a knock-yoursocks off gospel concert, and the premiere of a very exciting newly commissioned work of songs about our heritage. Don’t forget our popular and very entertaining choral workshop, plus a storytelling workshop and the best art show yet, with many award-winning artists. In 2012, we have added another day, extending the Festival to a full week, May 28June 3. And we’re thrilled that TD Canada Trust has donated $2,500 so we can give free tickets to all students, to all events. Just ask! Can’t get any better? Hey, it just did. Enjoy every minute of this exceptional week. On the cover: top, from left, John McDermott, Laura Pudwell, The Canadian Brass, Denise Pelley, bottom, The Red Peppers Dixieland Jazz Band, Maureen Batt of Essential Opera, The Peterborough Pop Ensemble.

Famed Tenor John McDermott headlines New Hamburg Festival

John McDermott

New Hamburg Live! is thrilled to welcome internationally acclaimed tenor John McDermott, Friday evening, June 1, at Steinmann Mennonite Church (7:30 p.m.), with the John McDermott Trio, including Michael Peter Smith and Jason Fowler. John McDermott’s accomplishments have become legendary in recording industry lore. He is a long way from the man for whom singing was a hobby less than ten years ago. John was discovered quite by chance, when working as a circulation sales representative for the Toronto Sun, he belted out an impromptu rendition of Danny Boy at a company party.

John’s first album, Danny Boy, was originally recorded as a very private and personal 50th anniversary tribute for his parents. Its quality could not be ignored and it eventually found its way into the hands of EMI Music Canada. Danny Boy subsequently garnered strong sales for a debut release in the U.S. and Canada. This success, in addition to a fast growing North American fan base, won through a tireless touring schedule, led to his participation in the PBS phenomenon, The Irish Tenors. John’s presence helped generate a US gold record, three US tours, and a highprofile media schedule, which included appearances on Good Morning America and The Today Show. In November 2001, John taped John McDermott A Time to Remember at the Living Arts Centre outside Toronto. This, his first solo television special, began airing in March 2002 on PBS affiliates across North America. The outcome of that performance has catapulted him into a musical career that includes three Canadian platinum records, five Juno nominations, a solid international touring schedule, and many more albums. His success has allowed him to express his commitment to veterans causes, which have always been integral to John and an important theme in his music. He is a recipient of one the United States’ highest honours the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award. In 2010 John received a commendation from the Minister of Veterans Affairs for his work with veterans including his foundation McDermott House Canada, which is committed to creating an improved quality of care in the final stages of a terminal illness, coupled with a warm, welcoming place to stay in Canada for veterans, military, first responders and their families. It is with this spirit he recorded his current CD entitled Journeys, which tells the story of our Canadian heroes. www.newhamburglive.ca 3

Barry’s back with Tales of the Theatre,

Barry MacGregor

4 www.newhamburglive.ca

Long-time Stratford and Broadway star Barry MacGregor has become a great friend of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. In 2011, he premiered his one-man play, “Tales of the Theatre”, at the Festival. In 2012, Barry is back, with Tales of the Theatre: Volume II, which opens the Festival, Monday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m., at St. George’s Anglican Church. His stories of life on the stage – and back stage – were a big hit last year, and we are thrilled that he has spent a good part of the time since honing a new set of stories, sure to delight theatre lovers as he tells of hijinks and hiccups. Barry has an impressive resumé and an enormous reputation as an actor, for his work with the Stratford Festival, the Shaw, on Broadway and in theatres around the world. One highlight was his performance as The Fool, opposite Christopher Plummer, in King Lear, both at Stratford and on Broadway. The show opens with Act One: Songs of

Volume II, joined by Pudwell, Nafziger the Theatre, featuring Grammynominated Laura Pudwell and accompanist Charlene Nafziger. Laura Pudwell’s reputation as a superb vocalist has been well-established as a result of her performances in London, Paris, Laura Pudwell Salzburg, Houston, Vienna and Boston. Her vast repertoire ranges from early music to contemporary works. She is equally at home on the opera, oratorio or recital stage, and has received international acclaim for her recordings. Laura appears regularly with the Toronto Consort, and is a frequent guest soloist with Tafelmusik, and symphony orchestras across

the continent. C h a r l e n e Nafziger has served as a musical director for productions of Drayton Entertainment and the Stirling Festival Theatre; served as assistant music director, accompanist and performer with the Charlene Nafziger S t r a t f o r d Shakespearean Festival over five seasons; has been an accompanist for such noted performers as Cynthia Dale, David Rogers, Daniel Lichti, Theodore Baerg, Ken Whiteley, Jackie Richardson, Molly Johnson and Vicki St. Pierre; has appeared as guest performer with the National Arts Centre Orchestra; and is an accomplished composer and arranger.

“World’s Most Famous Brass Group” The Canadian ensemble that has perfected the idea of a brass quintet performs at New Hamburg Live! Tuesday evening, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church. Five tremendous brass musicians – each a virtuoso in his own right – form the legendary Canadian Brass. With an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of the world’s most famous brass group. Chuck Daellenbach and Gene Watts first came together in 1970 to form a brass quintet – a chamber music setting not entirely new, but never before having garnered the success and storied career Canadian Brass would achieve over the next 40 years. Three empty chairs were quickly filled and together, the group’s imagination and consummate musicianship elevated the art of the brass quintet to what it is today. The varied Canadian Brass repertoire

features brass standards as well as a wideranging library of original arrangements created especially for them. These include the works of Renaissance and Baroque masters, Classical works, marches, holiday favorites, ragtime, Dixieland, Latin, jazz, big band, Broadway and Christian music, as well as popular songs and standards. Having started with a very limited base, Canadian Brass has created their own musical world by transcribing, arranging and commissioning more than 200 works. They have transformed a previously neglected group of instruments with a limited repertoire into a versatile and vital ensemble that can play everything from Gabrieli to Gershwin! With a discography of over 100 albums and an extensive world-wide touring schedule, Canadian Brass is an important pioneer in bringing brass music to mass audiences everywhere. They have sold well over 2 million albums worldwide, most recently their

Essential Opera, orchestra to bring Thriving new Toronto opera company Essential Opera wraps up its second season with a performance at the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. The company will perform the elegant and evocative “Alcina”, by Handel. What happens when a pair of sister sorceresses fall in love with the wrong men? Handel tells the story of Alcina, a sorceress who gives up her powers for the love of a handsome knight, and her sister Morgana, who has to choose between a faithful lover and a mysterious stranger. Dramatic and heartbreaking in true opera seria style, with quests, betrayals, and love conquering all. This production features a chamber orchestra of authentic instruments. The opera will be presented in concert. The New Hamburg performance will follow the Toronto premier, earlier in May. The company appears at the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts on Thursday, May 31, at Steinmann Mennonite

Alcina promises to continue this trend with a polished and entertaining presentation of Handel’s alluring score – a favourite recently absent from Canadian stages – with a cast of dynamic performers. Factory Arts String Quartet promises sunshine New Hamburg Live! guarantees sunshine, on Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m. That’s not a weather forecast: “Pure Sunshine, in the Company of Friends” is a concert featuring The Factory Arts String Quartet exploring some of the fantastic music written for the combination of two violins, viola and cello. The group will perform the decidedly sunny quartet by Mendelssohn, Op. 44, No. 1. This effervescent work is paired with the Three Divertimenti by Benjamin Britten. Written early in his career, each movement is a musical portrait of one of Britten's friends from his school days. Although the two pieces on the program differ in the harmonic language they use, you will hear that both are joyous compo-

The concert takes place at St. George’s Anglican Church, New Hamburg. Admission is $15, including HST; free to students with the New Hamburg Live All Access Student Pass.

Trio produce musical tapestry Two well-known Waterloo Region musicians and a writer have combined their talents to tell the story of the region in a new and unique way. The three have collaborated to produce a “song cycle – a collection of songs linked by narrative – rooted in the the heritage of the region. The three collaborators are Charlene Nafziger and Mike Erb, who composed the music, and Paul Knowles, who has written the lyrics. The finished product, called “The River Rolls, includes 14 original songs, and will be premiered at the 2012 New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, on Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m., at St. George’s Anglican Church. The production will feature eight musicians and a narrator. Nafziger and Erb will perform, Knowles will do the narration, and other musicians and singers, including soloist Erin Bardua, will take part. The River Rolls is like a musical tapestry or patchwork quilt. The songs are set in different musical styles, but the entire work is one piece, an artistic expression of the story of local communities. celebrating Waterloo’s heritage in concert format. The River Rolls is story-telling in musical form, a unique artistic opportunity for people who experience this creation to consider their heritage from several different points of view. The River Rolls focuses on individuals and themes that are representative of key developments in the region’s history. It includes songs about the artist Homer Watson, pioneer Barbara Schneider, politician Mackenzie King, innovator Sir Adam Beck, and ex-slave Levi Carroll. Other songs in the song cycle celebrate Native Canadian heritage, the mills of the region, quilting, and

early hotels, among other themes. The songs are full of humour and vitality; those who have previewed the production have raved about the quality of the music. The project has been made possible because of a grant from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund, and the support of New Hamburg Live! After the Festival premiere, the intention is to do a number of performances throughout the region, especially in schools and museums. For more information about “The River Rolls”, contact any of the three collaborators, or email pknowles@golden.net.

workshop will perform in concert. This year, the Mass Choir joins the Peterborough Pop Ensemble in the Saturday evening concert at Steinmann Mennonite Church, at 7:30 p.m. Members of the choral workshop choir attend and perform in the evening concert free of charge. opportunity to sing your favourites This year’s event brings a different opportunity – the Peterborough Pop Ensemble will be singing popular music of the 50s through the 80s, so Vicki St. Pierre will be conducting the New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir, and the Pop Ensemble, in several popular songs from those eras. Peterborough Pop Ensemble In addition to being one of the top classical Lizst, to open a classical organ recital by mezzo sopranos in the country, Vicki St. Pierre Andrew Adair, in 2011. is much in demand as a conductor. New Hamburg Live! producer Nancy Knowles says, “The music this year will be accessible and fun. It’s an ideal opportunity, not only for experienced choral singers, but for anyone who has thought they would like to sing in a choir, some time – Vicki will make sure everyone has a wonderful time.” Everyone is welcome, but participants are encouraged to register for the choral workshop through the Contact Us tab at www.newhamburglive.ca. The Peterborough Pop Ensemble New Hamburg Live! is proud of the choral tradition that has become an important part of this Festival. Each year, at least one performance has included choral music – Liszt anthems, in 2011; the Elmer Iseler Singers in 2010; gospel in 2009 and 2010. This season, our choral concert takes a turn for the Pops, as we welcome the very accomplished group, the Peterborough Pop Ensemble, in concert Saturday, June 2, 7:30 p.m. at Steinmann Church. Under the direction of Barbara Monahan, The Peterborough Pop Ensemble has developed a reputation over the past decade for its vivid musical interpretations of a broad spec-

trum of music including jazz, pop, Broadway and gospel. With its seamless blend of voices, rich choral harmonies, and energetic performances, this vocal ensemble strives to provide its audiences with memorable musical experiences. Critics have praised the Ensemble’s eclectic repertoire, “whether it's a solemn rendition of traditional pieces, a cappella, or for the great fun of a rollicking pop performance with full band and outrageous costumes.” In September 2011 the Pop Ensemble was most proud to be designated Ambassadors to the City of Peterborough, in acknowledgement of its continued support of many local chari-

finale for New Hamburg Live! ance has been a constant. This year is no exception. Some of our favourites are here, but we are delighted to introduce some new talent to the mix. Two of our lead vocalists are back by popular demand – jazz and gospel singer Denise Pelley and our own Musical Director, Vicki St. Pierre. Denise has garnered superb reviews right across North America, both for her music and her philanthropic work. Vicki is best known on the international stage as one of the finest classical mezzo sopranos in Canada, but New Hamburg Live! fans also love her showNick Settimi stopping gospel per-

formances. Joining them is a newcomer to our Festival, Nick Settimi, who is starring in Drayton musicals this season, playing the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, and receiving ovations in the unexpected part of Roz, in 9 to 5. Our All-Star Band – Vicki St. Pierre and that is no exaggeration – welcomes back the hugely talented Charlene Nafziger, multi-instrumentalist Mike Erb, vibes master Tom Cummings, drummer Jeff Cowell and – new to New Hamburg Live! – Matthew Lima on bass. You won’t find better gospel music anywhere. That’s a guarantee.
