Art show features many artists, venues The Art Show that is an important part of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is unique in several ways. It features the fine work of local and area artists, in unusual settings. Part of our mandate is to give these kinds of opportunities to area artists and performers. The Art Show is launched with a sample of each artist’s work on display at the opening Big Band Gala, June 2, but the show carries on from June 2-6 in a number of venues, as New Hamburg businesses exhibit the work of one or more artists in their places of business, and wel“Female legs” by Brad Harness, come art lovers to an artist new to the Art Show.

drop in and see the work. More than a dozen artists are showing their works, some returning from 2009, and many new to the Festival. The Gala Art Show opens at 6 p.m.; the Big Band Gala begins at 7 p.m., at the New Hamburg Community Centre. And from June 26, you can see the show, featuring a wide variety of styles and media, at Puddicombe House, the Waterlot, Upper Case Books, Meme’s Café, Murray’s Clothing and Footwear, Jess Boutique, Old Country Restaurant and Stitch Graphix. New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is presented by New Hamburg Live! (not-for-profit incorporation in process) in cooperation with English Garden Publishers and Gossage Arts Management. Producer: Nancy Knowles; Executive Director: Paul Knowles; Director of Music, Vicki St. Pierre; Website design and Management, Common Sense Design. Thanks to Cheryl and Nigel Gordijk, Kristen Hahn, and a wonderful team of volunteers. New Hamburg Live! is grateful for an economic development grant from the Township of Wilmot, and to the advertisers who participated in this program. Program printed by Ritz Printing.

New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts celebrates music, art and literature Welcome back! We’re thrilled to present the second annual New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. Our first-ever Festival, in 2009, was an exciting adventure; this year, built on the foundation of that success, is a full-blown celebration. Once again, we are offering the very best in music, literature, and art. This is a fantastic opportunity to see and hear some of the finest musicians, authors and artists in Canada, including the incomparable Quartette, the renowned Elmer Iseler Singers – with roots right here in New Hamburg – and, back by popular demand, bluegrass and gospel legend Ken Whiteley.

Over the five days of the Festival, you can experience ten different events – six concerts, from Big Band swing and Gilbert and Sullivan to 17th century classical works; two literary events featuring nationally known authors; a choral workshop with two of the finest leaders in the country; and an art show that goes all Festival long, featuring the work of a dozen fine area artists. The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts brings dozens of the most talented people in Canada to New Hamburg, and also highlights the talents of dozens of local singers and artists. Wonderful reasons to celebrate!

Festival features two jam-packed literary events Eight authors will be on hand for the two Words Alive literary events that are part of this year’s New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. Organized by Kristen Hahn of Upper Case Books, the events will be held Friday afternoon, June 4, at Puddicombe House, and Saturday afternoon, at the Waterlot. Both begin at 3 pm; Neil Pasricha both include refreshments. Friday is “local history day”, as literary and history fans will hear from local history authors including Ernie Ritz, Marie Voisin, Karl Kessler and Paul Knowles. On Saturday, book lovers can meet and hear read-

ings from four noted authors with exciting new works, including Neil Pasricha (“The Book of Awesome”), Drew Hayden Taylor (“Motorcyles and Sweetgrass”), Nicholas Rudddock (“The Parabolist”) and Roger Clarke, writing as Phillip Allen Campbell (“Big Wheel”). One reviewer said this of “The Book of Awesome”: “The awesomest part... is the realization that if you enjoy the simple moments of awesome in your life, you will be happier.” These awesome author events are designed with just such happiness in Drew HaydenTaylor mind! Enjoy!

Music, Dancing, Auctions and Art New Hamburg Community Centre, 251 Jacob Street. The Toronto All-Star Big Band is a fullsize swing orchestra that has been described as “one of the most exciting bands around.” The 24-member Toronto All-Star Big Band revives the spirit, style and sound of 1930s and 40s, that golden age of the big bands. The opening gala will include the opening of the art show, featuring about a dozen talented area artists. The show continues throughout the five-day festival, with works exhibited in a number of New Hamburg restaurants and business locales. The art show gets opens at 6 p.m.; the Gala gets underway at 7 p.m. Critics have raved about the Toronto

All-Star Big Band: Joanna Manning wrote of “A dazzling display of consummate professionalism, amazing talent and infectious energy,” while Phil Surgy, writing in the National Post, simply called the ensemble “A superb swing band.” Armed with brilliant programming, slick choreography and witty cultural nostalgia, this vibrant cast of awesome young talent has earned its position at the top of the list of presenters throughout Ontario and in the U.S. Theatrical engagements are far-reaching, and recent gigs have included the Port Hope Jazz Festival, Port Elgin Big Band Celebration, Beaches International Jazz Festival, Art Park in Lewiston N.Y. and Toronto’s Palais Royale and Casa Loma.

Canada’s best singers present the wit and style of G&S For lovers of comic opera, the names “Gilbert and Sullivan” are spoken with a challenging combination of awe, wonder, and laughter. These two portly, mutton-chopped Victorian men produced far more than their quota of brilliant lyrics (the work of W.S. Gilbert), and memorable music (contributed by Arthur Sullivan) in fourteen productions that Barry MacGregor are performed all over the world to this day. Their best-known works include H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. On Thursday, June 3, some of the finest classical singers in North America appear at the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts to sing “The Best of G&S”, in a show hosted by Stratford and Broadway star Barry MacGregor, a performer of superb comic timing whose many theatrical roles have included his star turn in New York and

Stratford as The Fool, in King Lear, opposite Christopher Plummer. Performers this evening include tenor Colin Ainsworth, who has appeared with opera companies in New York, Edinburgh, and with almost every notable classical music company in Canada. But he has also recently appeared alongside Rufus Wainwright, and is no stranger to the works of G&S. Baritone Jason Nedecky, who has performed with the Canadian Opera Company and many other companies across the country, has also been soloist with Consort Caritatis on tours of Eastern Europe and Italy. Soprano Erin Bardua returns to New Hamburg Live! She sang in the opening Lights of Broadway Gala in 2009, and more recently has been featured in a Birthday Series recital of works by Hugo Wolf. In addition to appearing in “The Best of G&S,” Erin will also perform in the “Celestial Sirens” concert on Friday Colin Ainsworth

Ken Whiteley welcomed in return There is no doubt that the gospel/bluegrass concert that closed the 2009 New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts was a highlight of that first Festival. An enthusiastic audience filled the hall at Steinman Mennonite Church as Ken Whiteley, his band, guest musicians, and the newly formed New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir, led by Vicki St. Pierre, put on a high energy performance. It was so good, in fact, that this is the one event that will be repeated in the 2010 Festival. Ken is back, with his band. The choir is reforming (with all newcomers welcome) for a choral workshop on Saturday, June 5. And on Sunday afternoon, June 6, Ken, the band and the choir will be joined by guest musi-

cians Tom Cummings on vibraphone and pianist Caitlin Hayes for the fabulous Festival finale. Ken Whiteley is a Canadian roots music legend. His musical journey has taken him from jug band, folk and swing to blues, gospel and children's music. Among numerous accolades, he has won a Canadian Folk Music Award, Genie Award for Best Original Song in a Canadian film, Lifetime achievement awards from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals and Mariposa Folk Festival. Ken has been nominated for 7 Juno awards and 13 Maple Blues Awards. Ken’s live performances showcase his outstanding musicianship on guitars and mandolin, award winning original songs and his powerful vocals. Whether

Soprano Rachel ClelandAinsworth sings a full repertoire of classical opera, but is also committed to performing Canadian contemporary opera; she performed the title role in the world premier of The Last Wife, by Howard Alexander. As well, Rachel has starred Erin Bardua as YumYum in The Mikado. Mezzo soprano Vicki St. Pierre is Musical Director of the New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. This year, Vicki sings “The Best of G&S”, appears in “Celestial Sirens”, and conducts the New Hamburg Live! Mass Choir in the choral workshop and Sunday afternoon bluegrass and gospel concert. When she’s not bringing the best in music to New Hamburg, Vicki is soloist with leading companies in Canada and internationally. Pianist for The Best of G&S will be Kate Carver, who has played for the Canadian Opera Company, and been on staff of music programs in New York, Great Britain, and Canada.

New Hamburg Live! becoming a not-for-profit corporation The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts was started in 2009 as a “kitchen table volunteer organization. The founders are Nancy and Paul Knowles – Nancy was honoured as a Wilmot Township “Citizen of the Year for her work with the Festival, and New Hamburg Live! has also been nominated for a Kitchener-Waterloo Arts Award. The first season was a successful experiment, and this has led to stage two – the incorporation of New Hamburg Live! as a legal entity, a not-for-profit corporation. This may open the door to funding sources which would allow the Festival to grow. Incorporation has been facilitated by Waterloo lawyer David Jutzi, who has provided all the necessary legal services on a volunteer basis. Says Paul

Knowles, “We could not have done this without David’s generous participation. During 2010, New Hamburg Live! will officially be incorporated; its board of directors will include Ginny Dybenko, Dean of the WLU School of Business; Karl Keilhau, a musician who lives in Foxboro Green; Dr. David Whitehead, Brock University School of Business; Linda Whitehead; Dr. Susan Seyler, a family physician; John Hanson, President of Ten Forward Enterprises; Anita Hanson; Nancy Knowles; and Paul Knowles. New Hamburg Live! cannot issue charitable receipts, but donations from individuals and companies wanting to support the arts on a local basis are welcomed and appreciated.

reprised in 2010 Whiteley. The choir learns several solo pieces, as well as backup music for some of Whiteley’s songs. On Sunday afternoon, June 6, the choir appears in concert at the Festival finale, at 2 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church. This full-tilt concert includes the Mass Choir, and the Ken Whiteley band. And this year, we welcome two new guest musicians – accompanist Caitlin Hayes, who will play at the workshop and the concert, and Tom Cummings, master vibraphone player and percussionist. New Hamburg Live! organizers hope for a 60voice choir again in 2010. Producer Nancy Knowles points out that these two events offer a wonderful chance for area singers to learn from internationally known musicians, and to sing with a man who has garnered multiple June award nominations and a Grammy nomination. The Sunday concert is again expected to attract and audience of 300-plus.

You might expect a performance of the music written and sung by nuns of the 17th century to be beautiful, mystical and compelling. You might not expect it to also be amusing. But “Celestial Sirens”, performed by Capella Intima, is all of the above. This ensemble, led by artistic director and tenor Bud Roach, also includes sopranos Erin Bardua and Dawn Bailey, mezzo soprano Vicki St. Pierre, organist Sara-Anne Churchill and Theorboist Lucas Harris. Capella Intima concert: classical and whimsical Hamburg Live! – at St. George’s Anglican Church, 3 Byron Street, at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 4. Featured is the music of the Benedictine nuns of 17th century Milan, with the songs punctuated by letters written by the often rebellious nuns, and about them, by their church superiors. The music is sublime; the instrumentation and arrangements are authentic to the period; the setting for the concert is perfect. Altogether, this Capella Intima Performance will be an unexpected highlight of the 2010 New Hamburg Live! Festival.

Elmer Iseler Singers are returning to

appearing at New Hamburg Live!

The Elmer Iseler Singers, conducted by Artistic Director Lydia Adams, is a twenty-voice professional chamber choir based in Toronto. Founded by the late Dr. Elmer Iseler in 1979, the Elmer Iseler Singers are one of Canada’s most illustrious professional choral ensembles. The choir has built an enviable international reputation through its concerts, broadcasts and recordings throughout Canada, the United States and on the international concert stage. Known for the unique beauty of their sound, the Elmer Iseler Singers bring to life exciting repertoire that spans 500 years of great choral music. The choir regularly commissions and performs new works, and is frequently involved in radio and television broadcasts and a variety of recording projects. Elmer Iseler was known as “the Dean of Canadian Choral Conductors. Born in Port Colborne, he commenced studies at Waterloo College in 1945, and then began spending time in New Hamburg, where he was dating dating Trudie Mosig, the daughter of Reverend Richard

Each of the talented women in “Quartette has a vibrant musical career; together, this astonishing foursome offers a remarkable musical experience. And Quartette is one stage at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 5, at Steinmann Mennonite Church, part of our 2010 New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. Quartette was formed for a concert at Toronto’s Harbourfront in the summer of 1993. The following year, the group received the Canadian Country Music Association's award for best vocal collaboration. In 1995 and 1996, it garnered Juno Award nominations for top country group. An hour-long showcase on “Adrienne Clarkson Presents on CBC-TV introduced them to an even wider audience in 1995. While Quartette continues to tour extensively in Canada with a three-piece back-up band, and play select dates with symphony orchestras, each member – Gwen Swick, Caitlin Hanford, Cindy Church, and Sylvia Tyson – has been able to maintain their individual solo careers. Sometimes only barely. Says Cindy with a laugh, “My most schizophrenic moment was a gig in Calgary at a com-

The New Hamburg Youth Choir became Elmer’s pride and joy, and launched the career that would define the rest of his life. The New Hamburg Live! That was wacky! “When Quartette started we said we were still going to do our solo careers, recalls Hanford. “Doing other projects has allowed us to do and explore different things. Within Quartette, Sylvia takes care of financial and contractual matters; Cindy handles travel and booking itineraries; Gwen oversees rehearsals and hiring musicians; and Caitlin acts as the product manager for their catalog. “It’s the strength of the music, and the sound of the four of us that has kept Quartette going, says Sylvia. “We were once asked by an interviewer if we ever have cat fights, and we all broke up laughing. Only a guy would ask that question. New Hamburg Live! is committed to bringing the best in Canadian roots music as part of its annual mandate, and we are thrilled to follow the 2009 success of David Francey with Quartette, one of the best-known – and certainly most talented – music groups in the country.

According to a story in the New Hamburg Independent, Trudie’s mother Melinda Mosig was the choir director for Trinity’s youth choir, made up entirely of girls. Iseler suggested he could take over the Elmer Iseler Singers choir and bring boys Artistic Director Lydia Adams into the fold... and he (Pierre Maraval Photo) did. The New Hamburg Youth Choir became Elmer’s pride and joy, and launched the career that would define the rest of his life. The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is delighted to present the Elmer Iseler Singers, Thursday, June 4, at 8 p.m., at Zion United Church, with a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m.

munity festival in the summer (of 2007). On the Sunday, Quartette was onstage from 1pm to 1:30pm., and I performed with Lunch At Allen’s from 2:15pm to 4pm.

The New Hamburg Live! choral workshop and bluegrass gospel concert was undoubtedly a highlight of the 2009 New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. So much so that, while everything else in the 2010 Festival menu is brand new, we are reprising this combination event, by popular demand.

Festival.

Whether
