About the Cover THE SAILBOAT

As we sail through this life, we may take different directions as we seek self-fulfillment and happiness. With the determination to do something meaningful, we commit ourselves to take opportunities with optimism and embrace every challenge in this journey. We oblige our own selves to learn the value of endurance and adaptability with hopes for a better and brighter future.

But sailing in the ocean will not always be smooth. The storm’s strong winds and big waves will come to toss us around and turn us upside down; but learning how to adjust the sail and to keep a strong anchor will hold us in our place. As the ‘seed’ of aspiration remains firmly planted within us, we strengthen our education, we equip ourselves with accreditations and we aim for recognition.

As the captain of our own ship, it’s us who has that power in steering it towards our visions and aspirations in life. It’s us who can control who we sail with, our family, our friends, our colleagues - those people who unite with us and will help us adjust the sails towards that direction leading to a sustainable environment. Those people whom we trust to give us confidence and will work with us in quest for success, not only in our profession but as a whole person reaching those dreams.

About the Organization

Ang Orgnisasyon

À propos de l’organisation

UAP:

A Prime Professional Organization of Architects

The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) is the first duly accredited organization of Architects in the country. It was founded in 1975 after the union of the League of Philippines Architects (LPA), the Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA), and the Association of Philippine Government Architects (AGPA). By virtue of the passage of Republic Act No. 9266, UAP was accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission as the Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization of Architects (IAPOA).

Vision

UAP believes that an important purpose of architecture is to create a vision that improves the built environment. This vision is vital to the advancement of the living standards of our communities and provides a service of ever-increasing value to society. Hence, the vision is:

UAP the prime organization of Architects

Mission

In order for the UAP to unite the registered and licensed architects in the Philippines, promote the aesthetic, scientific and business practice of architecture; advance architectural standards of continuing education, training and practice; and build relationships among clients, the construction industry and architects, the following mission is adopted:

The UAP as the Integrated and Accredited Professional Organization of Architects, is the vanguard of the Architecture profession in the country which shall serve as the catalyst of dynamism and unity among Filipino Architects, promoting the highest ethical conduct, discipline, responsibility and values beneficial to man and society, culture and the environment in the delivery of its professional mandate for local and global practice.

About the Chapter

It was September 23, 2003, when the United Architects of the Philippines - Ontario Canada Chapter with chapter registration No. 0093 was formally inaugurated and officially added to the roster of ‘Foreign Based Chapter’ of a growing UAP family.

The inauguration was graced with the presence of UAP National Officers from the Philippines. Encompassing the inauguration was the induction of the charter’s board of directors and members. The chapter’s primary goal is to create, achieve and implement programs that will serve the best interest of Philippine registered architects and architectural practitioners in North America. The dedication and commitment of its board of directors, committee officers, and members facilitated the process of launching and implementing worthwhile professional, civic and social projects which garnered a National President’s citation award as “model chapter” for internationalbased chapters.

The chapter is focused on promoting and uplifting the members’ spirit through training, social interaction, fellowship and community outreach. Various professional and social activities are lined up to sustain the chapter’s objectives. Officers and members are working hand-in-hand, fulfilling and defending the dream of Filipino registered architects and architectural practitioners to be officially recognized in the Ontario architectural practice.

In 2023, the United Architects of the Philippines - Ontario Canada Chapter marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 20th anniversary on September 23, 2023. The chapter commemorated two decades of dedication, growth, and service to the Filipino architectural community in Ontario Canada with the theme “Building with Courage and Vision.” This celebration not only honored the chapter’s past achievements but also reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for the recognition and professional growth of Filipino architects in Ontario. This event was a testament to the chapter’s enduring legacy and its forward-looking vision for the future.

Vision

UAP-OCC to become the premier organization for Philippine-licensed architects and Filipino architectural practitioners to fully realize their potential. Involve, Evolve.

PROFESSIONAL REGULATION COMMISSION BOARD OF ARCHITECURE

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Congratulations to the members of UAP Ontario Canada Chapter, on your 21st year of founding celebration. How I wish I can be with you just like the time we were together on your chapter’s chartering.

As we celebrate this anniversary, it is important to acknowledge the challenges that our architecture profession faces. The modern world is grappling with unprecedented issues such as social inequality, urbanization and climate change.

Your celebration theme “Paradigm Shift: Embracing and Conquering Challenges Towards Sustainable Profession” is very fitting to the challenges of our time and into the future.

Architects today are called upon to to be not just designers, but problemsolvers, thinkers, and leaders who can navigate these complex challenges with foresight, sensitivity and empathy.

The United Architects of the Philippines, the IAPO of Architects, which we are all members has been at the forefront of addressing these issues, advocating for sustainable practices, inclusive design, and the ethical responsibilities of architects. Our commitment to these causes brought accolades to UAP including the recent 2024 Outstanding Professional Organization by PRC. Your chapter is one of the contributors of where we are as a profession.

Looking to the future, we see a world where architecture continues to evolve, responding to the needs of society while maintaining the essence of aesthetic expression. The integration of technology in design, the rise of smart cities, and the increasing emphasis on ecological balance are trends that will shape the next chapter of our profession. As an organization, we are poised to lead in these areas, equipping our members with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to excel in rapidly changing landscape.

In your 21st anniversary, let us celebrate your architect members who have paved the way with their creativity, perseverance, and dedication. Let us also reaffirm our commitment to nurturing the next generation of architects who will carry forward the legacy of excellence that UAP Ontario Canada Chapter represents.

Sincerely,

MESSAGE FROM THE ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTS

As President of the governing Council of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA), which regulates the practice of architecture to protect the public interest, I am sharing this message of goodwill on behalf of our profession. I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Ontario Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) for another successful year of support, education, and community-building among your members.

As my final year as OAA President begins to draw to a close, I am sorry I am unable to attend your chapter’s Annual Induction of New Members and Officers in person—I have heard about such positive experiences from colleagues who have participated in the past. That said, I am delighted to know my fellow Councillor, Toronto architect Natasha Krickhan, will once again be representing the OAA at this important event.

Natasha has such passion and enthusiasm for not only architecture, but also those who are on the path to being licensed in our province. She was able to attend a UAP event in 2022 and I know how thrilled she was to learn of the contributions made by your Ontario Chapter in serving and supporting Philippine architects as well as the wider community of design practitioners.

The theme of this year’s 21st anniversary, “Paradigm Shift: Embracing and Conquering Challenges Towards a Sustainable Profession,” is particularly relevant. At the OAA, we ourselves underwent an organizational and operational review a few years back with this particular thought as one of the drivers.

We wanted to ensure our Association was indeed adapting to changing times while remaining ever-focused on our vision, mandate, and critical regulatory role. In using this exercise to develop a comprehensive, five-year plan, we found consensus in determining two lenses through which we view all our programming and initiatives—“Climate Action” and “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion” (which includes Indigenous Reconciliation).

The UAP Ontario Chapter’s commitment to these main topics, buoyed by training, social interaction, fellowship, and outreach, remains so important for both your membership as well as the larger architecture profession and the Ontarians it serves. I share my appreciation.

For those of you who are already OAA members as Architects, or hold status as Intern Architects or Student Associates, I encourage you to become more involved with our Association and help make a difference within your profession. If you were licensed or educated in the Philippines and wish to practise in Ontario, I wish you the best as you explore the established channels like the Broadly Experienced Foreign Architect (BEFA) Program or the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP). Please do not hesitate to reach out to the OAA if we can be of assistance. You can learn more about such international credentials and mobility on the OAA Website.

To the Ontario Chapter of UAP as a collective group, and to all of you as individuals, I wish you continued growth and success.

Salamat at mabuhay!

MESSAGE FROM THE CANADIAN ARCHITECTURAL CERTIFICATION BOARD

Dear President Canlas and members of the United Architects of the Philippines Ontario Canada Chapter,

Thank you very much for the invitation to attend the introduction ceremonies of your 21st year anniversary celebration. While I regret, I am unable to attend, I wanted to share sincere greetings and best wishes to all. It is an important time for architects to come together and address challenges toward a sustainable profession, which I know is the theme of your gathering.

As an architect, architectural educator and chair of one of Canada’s 12 architecture schools I know the value, joys and difficulties of the profession, and as current president of the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, I know the added value that diverse and foreign-trained architects bring to the field in Canada. The CACB vision is to mobilize the Canadian architecture community towards an inclusive and sustainable future, while carrying out its mandate to develop, implement, and maintain high-quality certification programs and standards for the practice of architecture in Canada.

Groups like the Ontario Chapter of the United Architects of the Philippines are important to helping all design professionals work together in realizing excellence in architecture, while advocating for more sustainable, just and beautiful built environments and thriving communities.

Thank you again for the invitation and best wishes to you all in your 21std year of organized advocacy and support.

Messages from the UAP-OCC’s Former Presidents

Twenty First Anniversary and counting...

How do we get from here to there?

How does one move forward to address converging issues and complex challenges of present architectural and urgent environmental realities?

Trying to find things to address, new issues to enrich, what to do and be a bigger part of the community; looking at the profession in a different, better and balanced way. Moving into the future together by building upon the lessons of the past through hope and hard work. Is there any other option?

We have to look for expansion instead of being consolidated, concretized and frozen into a repeated pattern! We should always be open and ever-growing and ever-changing; the willingness to push into new areas!

My warmest congratulations to the United Architects of the Philippines Ontario Canada Chapter on its 21st Anniversary and the induction of new Officers and Board of Directors.

Welcome to all new members!

Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Pilipino!

EDUARDO MANAPUL, UAP, MRAIC, APEC AR.

Charter President 2003-2005

UAP-Ontario Canada Chapter

Esteemed colleagues, officers, and members of the United Architects of the Philippines - Ontario Chapter,

It is with great honour and pride that we gather today to celebrate a significant milestone—our 21st year anniversary. Over the past two decades, our chapter has grown not just in numbers, but in the strength of our commitment to the architectural profession, to each other, and to the communities we serve. Tonight, as we also induct our new officers and members, we are reminded of the enduring legacy we are part of and the promising future that lies ahead.

Our theme for this year, “PARADIGM SHIFT: EMBRACING and CONQUERING CHALLENGES TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE PROFESSION,” is not just a reflection of the times we live in, but a call to action for each one of us. As professional architects living in Ontario, Canada, we have faced numerous challenges— both global and local—that have tested our resolve, our creativity, and our adaptability. Yet, it is through these challenges that we have found new ways to innovate, to collaborate, and to ensure that our profession remains not only relevant but essential in building a sustainable future.

The concept of a paradigm shift is about changing the way we think, the way we approach problems, and the way we execute our designs. In recent years, we have seen shifts in technology, environmental considerations, and societal needs that have required us to rethink our traditional practices. As architects, we are not just builders of structures; we are creators of spaces that shape the way people live, work, and interact with the world around them. Embracing this shift means acknowledging that sustainability is not an option but a necessity, and that our role as architects is pivotal in leading this change.

As we induct our new officers and members tonight, we are reminded that the future of our chapter, and indeed our profession, lies in the hands of those who are willing to embrace these shifts and to conquer the challenges that come with them. I am confident that Ar. Elmer Canlas, UAP, and his team present today will rise to the occasion, offering fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a steadfast commitment to our shared goals. Also, a heartfelt thank you to outgoing Chapter President Ar. Mariano Villanueva, UAP, and his team for their unwavering support to UAP-OCC.

Let us continue to support each other as we navigate this paradigm shift, knowing that our collective efforts will not only strengthen our chapter but also contribute to a more sustainable and resilient profession. I encourage each one of you to remain curious, to seek out new knowledge, and to never shy away from the challenges that lie ahead. Together, we can and will build a future that is not only sustainable but also inspiring.

Congratulations to our new officers and members, and happy 21st anniversary to the United Architects of the Philippines - Ontario Chapter. Here’s to many more years of growth, innovation, and success. Thank you, and God bless.

Warmest regards,

Greetings Colleagues,

Kudos to the previous administration of Mariano Villanueva for a job well done and warm congratulations to the incoming administration of Arch. Elmer Canlas and his board!

As we reflect on our journey in the architecture or allied professions, we must acknowledge the myriad of challenges that have shaped our profession. From economic downturns and technological advancements to changing societal needs and environmental concerns, we have faced adversity head-on.

However, it is through these challenges that we have honed our skills, strengthened our resolve, and emerged as resilient professionals. We have learned to adapt to evolving circumstances, innovate in our designs, and prioritize strategies for constantly growing our profession forward to greater heights.

Today, I urge you to continue embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Let us:

• Foster collaboration: Work together with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to find innovative solutions to complex problems. Embrace technology: Utilize digital tools and software to enhance our design processes and improve efficiency.

Evolve to changing times: Face change with the courage to be uncomfortable and not take the easy road but the more challenging journey.

Advocate for our profession: Raise awareness about the importance of architecture and the contributions of architects to society.

By doing so, we can not only overcome the challenges we face but also create a more sustainable and prosperous future for our profession.

Let us continue to inspire and empower each other as we strive to build a better world through architecture.

Onward and forward,

7th President 2017-2018

UAP-Ontario Canada Chapter

Messages from the UAP-OCC’s Former Presidents

My warmest greetings to all! Congratulations to United Architects of the Philippines Ontario Canada Chapter on your 21st Anniversary and Induction Program. My sincerest gratitude to all the members of this prestigious organization, for your support in our Chapter.

To the outgoing officers, we commend you for the job well done. To the new incoming officers FY: 2024-2025, I welcome and congratulate you! It’s a pleasure serving this organization.

This year’s theme: Paradigm Shift: Embracing and Conquering Challenges Towards Sustainable Profession. As a career professional, you play a critical role in helping your clients navigate the ever-changing job market while also considering the long-term implications of their career choices on society and the environment. Sustainable Career Development is an approach that you can use to support your client in the development of a career path that contributes to a sustainable future. Traditional career development may not always align with the principles of sustainability, contribute to the betterment of society, and encourage career paths that promote equity for all. Sustainable Career Development employs a holistic approach to career planning, work search, and career management. It requires you to consider the long-term implications of career decisions on both the individual and society. By integrating these considerations into your career development process, you can assist your clients in creating meaningful careers that provide financial stability, personal fulfillment, and longevity.

Sustainability also involves developing skills and competencies that are in demand in a rapidly changing economy, while also contributing to a more sustainable future. These challenges highlight the need for ongoing education and advocacy, as well as collaboration between career professionals, employers, workers, and policymakers to address barriers and promote sustainable practices in the workplace.

Lastly, I would like to thank all our sponsors for the continuous support to our Chapter .

Mabuhay ang Arkitektong Filipino! Ipagpatuloy natin ang magandang sinimulan.

Muli Maligayang Ika-Dalawamput Isang Taong Anibersaryo UAPOCC! Mahigit dalawang dekada na tayo!

JACKIELYN P. CALABOCAL, UAP

8th President 2018-2020 UAP-Ontario Canada Chapter

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the United Architects of the Philippines – Ontario Canada Chapter (UAP-OCC) on the 21st Anniversary and Induction of New Officers and Members.

Over the past two decades, this chapter has embodied the very best of what it means to be architects, innovators, and leaders, making remarkable contributions to the architectural profession both here in Canada and in the Philippines. Today, we celebrate this milestone with the theme: “Paradigm Shift: Embracing and Conquering Challenges Towards Sustainable Profession,” which could not be more fitting for the times we live in.

As we mark this 21-year journey, we are reminded that the world is in a state of constant change. Architectural practice is no exception, with each generation facing unique challenges that require fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking. The theme of a paradigm shift speaks to the pressing need for all of us to adapt and innovate – rethinking the very foundations of how we work and how we define success. In an era defined by rapid technological advances, environmental crises, and shifting social dynamics, the architecture profession is at a crossroads. How we respond to these challenges will shape not only the future of the built environment but also the future of the profession itself.

As we look into the future, the challenges we face are significant, but so are the opportunities. The ongoing technological revolution, driven by artificial intelligence, smart cities, and green technologies, is providing architects with tools and platforms that previous generations could only dream of. These advancements allow us to design with unprecedented precision, efficiency, and sustainability in mind. However, technology alone is not the answer. It is our ability to blend innovation with empathy and creativity with responsibility that will ultimately determine the success of the architectural profession in this new era.

On this milestone anniversary, let us not only reflect on the accomplishments of the past but also look forward to the possibilities of the future. The UAP Ontario Canada Chapter has proven time and again that it is more than capable of meeting the challenges of today while preparing for the uncertainties of tomorrow.

In closing, I extend my sincerest congratulations to the officers and members of the UAP Ontario Chapter for your 21 years of excellence, innovation, and leadership. As you move forward into this next chapter, I am confident that you will continue to embrace the paradigm shift ahead, conquering challenges, and contributing to a more sustainable, vibrant, and inclusive architectural profession.

Happy 21st anniversary, UAP Ontario Chapter! May you continue to build, lead, and inspire for many more years to come.

Sincerely Yours,

9th President 2020-2022

A MESSAGE

FROM THE UAP-ONTARIO CANADA CHAPTER’S 11TH & CURRENT PRESIDENT FY 2024-2025

To my fellow members of the UAP Ontario Canada Chapter, On behalf of the New Officers and Board of Directors, it is with great pleasure to welcome all members of the United Architects of the Philippines Ontario Chapter to the Induction Rites and 21st Anniversary celebration of our chapter.

Paradigm Shift: Embracing and Conquering Challenges towards Sustainable Profession

As immigrants pursuing our profession in a foreign land, we face the certainty that integrating into a new culture and society can be a difficult task. The conventional system has given way to a more complicated and multifaceted reality. Sailing across, we must equip ourselves with knowledge and strategies to thrive in this new setting. And as we steer in an era of economic shifts, it is the ability to embrace change, learning to adapt and modifying our mindsets to overcome these barriers. By exploring the key transformations in reshaping how we approach our careers and understanding the opportunities that arise from this paradigm shift, we can position ourselves in forming our career, reestablishing our lives and creating a brighter future for ourselves.

Together, we will navigate this paradigm shift, seize opportunities and conquer challenges towards a successful, sustainable profession. To the outgoing Board of Directors and Officers, with the leadership of Arch. Mariano Villanueva, thank you for your outstanding service to our chapter. The perseverance and dedication you showed was truly remarkable.

Finally, to my fellow members of the new administration fiscal year 2024-2025, may we believe that supporting and collaborating with each other achieves significant results.
