Letter From The Editor When we decided to start this magazine, people said we were crazy. "Magazines are dead," everyone said, and we agree. The old standard of magazine publishing is dead because today's woman is smart, savvy and can read between the lines. They know when the advice given is masked as editorial content, but really comes from a key advertiser. They know when a story has been recycled and regurgitated 50 times in 50 different ways. Newsstands are filled with magazines that are designed to line the pockets of the suits and investors, who are mostly men.

When online media companies and blogs began to pop up women flocked to this "new media" with fervor and excitement and let's face it, we all get a good bit of news, fashion tips and other lifestyle material from online resources. However, in the last few years volume of online media content has become completely overwhelming and we felt it was time to get back to basics in a totally modern, fresh and future seeking way. So, we created Nicole Magazine to give women something to read cover-to-cover with real, engaging fresh content. Think of us as the curators

of the huge wealth of information out there. We promise to give you something you have yet to discover in each issue. We promise never to sell out to advertisers. We promise to always care about what's new fresh, affordable, but also what's worth the "splurge." Most of all, we promise to create a magazine you actually want to read cover to cover...and the best part is we distribute the magazine in Blo Blow-dry bars, salons, spas and boutiques where you actually have the time to read it cover to cover! Enjoy the journey!

Bikini Talk with Stassi

What is your summer bikini routine? Bikini season is daunting for every woman, regardless of her size. We all have our insecurities and I think there is a little bit of comfort in knowing that as women we are all on the same team. A lot of the time we stress about our flaws, and forget to focus on the good with our bodies. Because of that, I don't drive myself crazy striving for perfection. My routine honestly consists of a good spray tan and a swimsuit that fits my body well. We noticed you have a nice healthy bust, but always look so great in a bathing suit; how do you find suits that are flattering? What do you look for in the perfect bikini? I can't even begin to explain how hard it is to find swimsuits for my upper half. I have natural double D boobs, which means they aren't perky and tight. I feel like they are always bubbling out somewhere! Whether it is in the front, or the side, or under; it's so hard to find something that is really supportive. In addition, I feel like I'm always walking the line between looking classy or slutty with swimwear, so I try and find swimsuits that aren't very showy. There are a couple great bikini designers that really understand the shape of a woman. Vix swimwear is one of my favorites, because I always feel like my girls are supported. How do you keep that rockin' body bikini ready? For a while I relied on the fact that I was young, but over the last year specifically I've noticed things changing. When I was living in New York, I was running a few miles a day on a treadmill. Now that I'm back in Los Angeles, my boyfriend has been teaching me yoga and I have to say that it is so strenuous, but so rewarding. My boyfriend is very active, so he is always showing me new things on how to stay fit. I'm using muscles I didn't even know I had! I'm also very lucky that he is a very clean eater. I could very easily succumb to eating fried foods all day long, I mean I'm from New Orleans! We love our food! But Patrick and I normally stay in and he grills chicken, fish, and veggies. He takes good care of me. Editing has a big impact on how people are portrayed on TV -- What is something about you as a person that people don't know? I'm a homebody. I feel like most people think I have this over the top exciting life, but it's quite the opposite. I don't stay out late, I don't really go to parties, I don't go to clubs. If I'm out for something, I'm always counting the minutes until I can be home in bed with my boyfriend and dog watching food or home-decorating shows. Nothing makes me happier than being at home. My home is my sanctuary. What are your favorite stores to shop in LA? Well I'll forever be a Zara fanatic. I just feel like it's such a great spot, not only for wellmade classics, but also trendy pieces that are affordable. For the most part though, I love shopping online. I love looking at different fashion blogs to get inspired, and then I do my research to find the most affordable options. I love sites like ASOS, Shopbop, Shopprimadonna, Polyvore, and then the all-encompassing site, Shopstyle. I love a good bargain! But my favorite LA spot is the Sunday flea market on Melrose and Fairfax. I always find so many interesting pieces there. Do you have an secret drugstore beauty buys that we need to know about? This might not be a drugstore buy, but it's not expensive. I actually wash my face with oil every night. I mix castor oil with argon oil and then use a warm wet cloth to wash it off. I have very sensitive skin, so I can only use all natural products. I'll use a Dr. Bronners bar of soap on my face once a week, but every other day I use oils. Most people are turned off by the idea of rubbing oil all over your face, but scientifically "like dissolves like", so basically the oils I use to cleanse my skin dissolve the oils that are clogging my pores. No expensive harsh face washes or creams needed! Have you had any work done? I have, actually. When I was 18, I had a chin implant surgery. It was very strange for a young girl in New Orleans to get a surgery like that at the time, but it was always something I felt self-conscious about. Most people tell me they don't see the difference, but really all that matters is that I do. I truly feel that women should do whatever makes them feel the most beautiful. I do think it is sad that it's acceptable to make fun of people for having "too much" plastic surgery when really it is none of our business. If changing something on your body or face makes you feel beautiful and great about yourself, who are the rest of us to have an opinion about it? To each their own. Some may say you were the “bitch” of the show--and who doesn’t love a good bitch?! I know I do! -- How did you turn this seemingly negative persona into something that worked FOR you? I’m actually genuinely baffled and bewildered by this “bitch” label I have been given! I feel like I just speak the truth and call it like I see it. I may be a little aggressive in the way I speak and communicate, and I’m sure that turns some people off. You can’t ever make everyone happy, so all I can do is be myself and hope for the best. A huge portion of viewers have related to things I’ve gone through, and with that comes compassion and understanding. So when I mess up a bit or get a bit too combative, they understand, because they have been there or in somewhat similar situations.

You can’t get more exotic than Fiji and things don’t get more exclusive in an attainable price range than the Royal Davui all inclusive luxury resort on a private island just off the southwestern coast of Viti Levu in Fiji.

WHERE/ABOUT The Royal Davui Island Resort is an ultimate exclusive island hideaway ideal for those seeking an exotic beach escape full of rest and total relaxation. This highend eco resort is dedicated to emphasizing and preserving the stunning simplicity and beauty of its natural habitat – jungle foliage, atop a living barrier reef, coral gardens, sapphire blue seas, white sand beaches and a lush landscape….and of course a gorgeous seaside spa. Pathways allow guests to explore the lush private island and enjoy gorgeous amenities including a 60-foot pool, bar, restaurant, small boutique, library, spa, marine facility and an open-air, multi-level main house, which serves as the island’s center of activity. The spa menu has an adequate variety of treatments. Our pick is the 60 minute sugar glow that exfoliates and hydrates the skin using warm coconut milk and natural cane sugar followed by lashings of Pure Fiji Body Butter ($95 USD). The best part about the resort is that it is adults-only with guests over the age of 16 welcome, which we think is the perfect recipe for pure relaxation. HOW MUCH Rates at Royal Davui include meals and taxes and start at around $1,100 USD per night (per couple) for an Island Pool Vale. A small price to pay for a piece of paradise. GETTING THERE You can book on the resorts website: www.royaldavui.com Despite its secluded nature, Royal Davui is easy to reach. Fiji is one of – if not the – most accessible destination in the South Pacific, with daily flights from Australia and frequent flights from North America, New Zealand and Asia. The most popular way to reach the island is via twice-daily plane/launch transfers, which involves a 25-minute flight from Nadi International Airport followed by a 30-minute launch ride across the lagoon.

13

The resort will arrange all transfers from Nadi to/from the island. Airlines that fly to Fiji include Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways, Jetstar, Korean Air and Virgin. There is also the option to helicopter from Nadi directly onto the island with either Island Hoppers or Helitours.

Inside Injectables: When To Say When Interview with Dr. Patty

We sat down with a leading cosmetic dentist who also specializes in cosmetic enhancements and fillers to get the real deal on Botox, fillers and she dished on when to start filing your face, how to find a good practitioner for injectable and a secret way to tell at your first consultation if the doc will make you look plastic like a plastic Barbie doll. Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique is located at 646 N. Federal Highway Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33304. What is the difference between types of fillers? Fillers vary based on thickness, area of application and base product.

credentials of the person injecting you. However, there is a wide variety of doctors, dentists and specialized nurses who are certified to perform

Each filler is specifically designed to plump and firm different areas underneath the skin’s surface, so they feature unique formulations and demand unique application techniques.

aesthetic procedures. Every state board determines who can inject the products, so you don’t necessarily need to visit a plastic surgeon for your desired look.

Are there any fillers/Botox, etc that are not safe? FDA-approved fillers are a safe bet. However, beware of “black market” fillers that are sold for drastically discounted prices. It is always best to work through a certified medical provider with a track record of happy clients.

There are so many women who look “done” or “plastic” and that tends to scare women who want to achieve natural beauty away from fillers. How do they find someone who won’t overdo it? I’m asked about this on a daily basis. My advice is: If your friend is referring you to her doctor for fillers and she looks plastic, steer clear. If you’re surprised to hear she’s had work done, that’s a good sign! If you’re not given a referral, try a complimentary consultation first. Pay close attention to the appearance of existing patients, nurses and staff. Oftentimes, they’re all being treated by that doctor, so you’ll get a free glimpse at his/her work.

What other non-surgical methods are there for enhancing the look of your face? There are plenty of non-surgical methods to enhance facial aesthetics. Platelet-rich plasma is a relatively new form of regenerative medicine that uses small amounts of your own blood to rejuvenate the look of skin. And, of course, there’s always the trusted facial, which cleanses and exfoliates skin for an instant brightening effect. Is there an ideal age to start getting fillers/injections? I get this question a lot. With the new wave of young Botox loyalists, more and more people wonder whether they should begin fillers at an earlier age. It’s a very personal decision. I have clients that start Botox as early as 24 for minor enhancements and as a preventative measure. Ethnicity, lifestyle and genetics all impact the aging process, so some women need help in their 20s while others don’t develop sun spots or wrinkles until their 50s. Should women start looking at it as preventative? I am a firm believer in early prevention. Once a static wrinkle is apparent (one that is visible when a facial expression is not being made), it takes a lot more work to iron it out. It also requires more product and ultimately costs much more. In the medical and dental fields, prevention is key. Women should become very familiar with their own faces and think about taking preventative measures just before wrinkles become static. It seems like everyone offers fillers these days. Should women trust their face with anyone? A woman’s face is her first impression, so she should cherish and treat it as such. It’s important to find a doctor who makes you feel comfortable and understands the final look you’re after. You have a right to know the

15

How do you determine when someone has had enough? When a client is new to my practice, I conduct a consultation to determine exactly what they are looking for. We spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, where I show them what they can expect. To air on the safe side, I start with small injection amounts and bring the client back for a two-week enhancement appointment, where we add a bit more if necessary. What kind of doctors should women look for? What type of doctor should they not use for fillers. For example, it would make sense that a dentist, plastic surgeon or dermatologist would know how the face works and how to fill “artfully,” but perhaps a general practitioner would not. Don’t discount a doctor because they don’t specialize in dermatology or plastic surgery. Any certified practitioner, based on their state board, may be able to inject. If their license allows for it, they may have undergone extensive training to master the art. It is best to select a doctor based on referrals and reputation. How much does it cost? Cost of injectables vary depending on the state, city and neighborhood you’re in. Patients should remember that they are putting the products into their bodies and – though budget is an important consideration – it should not be the guiding factor. Remember that doctors have to purchase high quality products from vendors, so extremely discounted services should be scrutinized.

Clean Up Your Act By Jennifer Pansa As many newcomers are jumping on the detox bandwagon, yoga and wellness expert Jennifer Pansa has been a lifelong advocate of conscious consuming and juicing. “Cleansing is integral to a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle, said Jennifer Pansa, cofounder of Juice Lab. “Cleanses strip away many adverse elements from the body and help people who consume them achieve a clearer mind and body. In the Fall of 2014, Pansa will colaunch the flagship location of Juice Lab, a cold-pressed, juice, smoothie and multi-day cleanse company in Miami, FL.

Looking for ways to slim down and show off your best beach body this summer, want to up the ante on your eating and exercise regimen or do you need an energy boost to get you through the dog days summer? Open up to the idea of a juice cleanse. Historically, the age-old process of cleansing was used to rid the body of toxins and ailments through a limited diet and increased intake of pressed fruits and vegetables. Through the use of advanced techniques, cleansing is currently credited with: • Reducing weight: rids the body of nearly five pounds of excess water through alkalization, which reduces bloating and gives the digestive system a “vacation” • Improving sleep: many of the leafy green vegetables in cleanses are packed with calcium and magnesium, which are relaxation minerals that improve the quality of sleep • Healthier nails, hair and skin: Cleansing clears the system of foreign and unhealthy agents that may clog pores and slow down the natural production of keratin- what nails and hair are made of.

TIPS TO DETOXING:

1)Use the Buddy System Share your experience and hold yourself accountable by doing the detox with a friend or spouse. Teamwork makes everything easier, and the combined energy will inspire you. 2) Clean out the Clutter Before you detox, take time to clear out your cupboards of foods that may make you waver from your goal. Clear out the junk food and make way for the new detoxed you. Keep your refrigerator stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables that you LOVE to eat. 3) Meditate and do Yoga Much of detoxing is mental. Yoga and meditation can help you observe yourself and your thoughts. The first step to positive change is awareness of the patterns that no longer serve to your benefit. Reflecting and moving your body is essential to a healthier you.

Summer Loving:

Maneuvering your summer romance(s) By Bianca Monaco

It was June and the handsome man sitting with his friends looked at me twice. Not just once, but twice. There was no mistaking it. I quickly scribbled on the back of a receipt “Just in case you were wondering”signed with my number and put it in my pocket. Twenty-minutes later he was leaving the bar with his friends. I took a swig of my drink, got up from my seat and followed them out of the bar. I caught him at the door, put my hand out and said “Sorry I never got your name, I’m Bianca.” He smiled took my hand pulled me in for a cheek kiss and introduced himself as Alfie. His smile widened as his hand pulled away and tucked the note in his pocket. I turned my head to leave and told him to have a good night. Two days into June and I was already scouting for a summer fling. You know, the lovely no strings kind of summer plans. They expire on labor day but the stories accumulated over the summer keep you warm on winter nights and in some exceptions they manifest into a little something more.

leaving a fling mad that it didn’t turn into something more, you’re leaving them with a smile and a story. When in doubt be bold. If you are texting a fling and see a potential player to add to your roster, go for it. Write your number down, make the introduction: be foolish. The only person you’re cheating is yourself for not making the most of the summer season.

Let’s keep things in perspective: The glorious thing about a fling is that it’s light, it’s easy, it’s fun and you can have multiple of them. Smile at the lifeguard by day and banter with the bartender by night. With that, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Although some of you might not be building the roster, you might be investing in one Star Player. A large amount of investment can sometimes leave us wondering if the fling will last longer than the season for white clothes. Some tell tale signs that it’s safe wonder…you hang out with their friends enough that your absence will be noticed, your conversations start sinking deeper than frivolous flirting, and lastly without even noticing it you’ve made a future plan outside of the summer season. That’s when you’ve crossed over to the relationship territory.

Nothing is personal, no response to a phone call or text? It’s insignificant because you are already out grabbing drinks with friends. Carpe Diem is a state of mind. The only future plan your making is something that is within the next 24 hours. We’re not talking about road trips or visiting each other outside of the summer season. This isn’t Grease. Mind you the only reason why Sandy and Danny got together was because they randomly ended up at the same school. When it was all said it done, they left their summer with smiles and tales of summer nights. You’re not

If you do find yourself building a roster and don’t know how to handle multiple practices, you need to prioritize and be mindful of time. Be kind, be real, be honest. There is no need to tell lies about meeting them at a bar and then not showing up, that is not in the contract. If you can’t make it to that bar or occasion because you’re else where, say you can’t make it but hope you can meet up another time. Don’t mess with people’s time, the summer only lasts so long for all of us, and you don’t need that kind of karma.
