Letter From The Editor When we decided to start this magazine, people said we were crazy. "Magazines are dead," everyone said, and we agree. The old standard of magazine publishing is dead because today's woman is smart, savvy and can read between the lines. They know when the advice given is masked as editorial content but really comes from a key advertiser. They know when a story has been recycled and regurgitated 50 times in 50 different ways. Newsstands are filled with magazines that are designed to line the pockets of the suits and investors, who are mostly men. When online media companies and blogs

began to pop up women flocked to this "new media" with fervor and excitement and let's face it, we all get a good bit of news, fashion tips and other lifestyle material from online resources. However, in the last few years the volume of online media content has become completely overwhelming and we felt it was time to get back to basics in a totally modern, fresh and future seeking way. So, we created Nicole Magazine to give women something to read cover-to-cover with real, engaging fresh content. Think of us as the curators of the huge wealth of information out there. We promise to give

you something you have yet to discover in each issue. We promise never to sell out to advertisers. We promise to always care about what's new fresh, affordable, but also what's worth the "splurge." Most of all, we promise to create a magazine you actually want to read cover to cover...and the best part is we distribute the magazine in Blo dry bars, salons, spas and boutiques where you actually have the time to read it cover to cover! Our Spring issue is packed with career insight and fashion/beauty must-haves.

@CHRISSPY

You may have seen Desi Perkins and Chrisspy regrammed by your fave beauty mavens and brands (Duh! They are 2 of the faces of Ipsy - one of the largest beauty subscription programs in the world!). Bloggers, Vloggers, and Instagram influencers are todays fastest growing group of female entrepreneurs. These #GirlBosses (who, together have over 2 million followers on instagram) may be having fun and doing what they love, but it’s not easy being insta-famous...it’s more than selfies and red carpets; there is a lot of hard work behind these beat mugs. We sat down with these beauties to get the inside scoop on their growth in this new world of business & talk makeup, youtube, and life experiences.

INTERVIEW: 1. Was there a specific moment or person that you can pinpoint as attributing to your social success? DESI: I had a personal struggle that I shared publicly on YouTube and it was when my audience responded with so much support that it became much more personal. So many people shared their own struggles and I was really able to connect with my followers. CHRISSPY: I remember the first time I saw a picture of eye makeup on Instagram I thought to myself, “Hey I’m good at makeup, I should try taking a picture like that.” It had never really occurred to me to do that before but when I did I got this amazing response from people. I fell in love with it and it quickly became this addicting hobby. 2. When did vlogging become a business for you? How did vlogging change when it shifted from a hobby to a job? DESI: In 2013, I received my first partnership deal, and it continued to grow from there. It’s always been fun first and business has come as a result of that. CHRISSPY: I’d say when I made the shift from Instagram to making YouTube videos. Making YouTube videos is so much work. It takes so long to set up, get the lighting right, sound, and then editing just one video requires hours of uninterrupted attention. Especially when I first began I was a one woman team! I learned so much, even though half the time I wanted to throw my computer out the window. 3. You are an amazing talented MUA, did you study makeup artistry in school or are you self-taught? DESI: I didn’t go to school for makeup. I always studied art and translated that art into makeup. I kept teaching myself through YouTube. CHRISSPY: I am self taught, although I did receive in-store training while working at MAC. 4. How long have you been a makeup artist? DESI: 6 years – since 2009 CHRISSPY: I’ve been a makeup artist since I was old enough to open my mom’s makeup bag and play! 5. What was the worst job you’ve ever had? Do you regret ever taking that job? DESI: I was a server at Red Robin and smelled like hamburger every day and everyone was very rude to me. I really respect servers – it’s a job that requires a lot of patience. CHRISSPY: I worked in a restaurant for several years while I was in college, but I wouldn’t say it was a bad job. Working in the service industry makes you a well rounded individual I’d say. 6. How did your partnership with Ipsy come to be? DESI: I had fast growth on YouTube due to my Instagram following. Several companies started to take note, including ipsy, and the rest is history. CHRISSPY: When ipsy first approached me, I assumed they were like every other multi-channel network and just brushed the email aside. It wasn’t until I talked to Desi that I learned what a unique opportunity it was. 7. Who is your role model? DESI: My role model is my Dad. He gives me the best advice and has always helped keep me grounded.

CHRISSPY: I really look up to Anastasia Soare (owner of Anastasia Beverly Hills). She loves what she does and has this amazing energy about her. She inspires and empowers so many women, giving unknown makeup artists a platform to share their work. I would love to be able to do that one day. 8. What advice would you give to young women who are looking into starting a blog or vlog? DESI: Start a blog because you’re passionate about something, not because you want to be a famous blogger. True passion captures the attention of people best. Don’t worry about growth. CHRISSPY: You know, I get so many emails from girls telling me they just need more equipment, more makeup, more time to get started. If you wait until you’re “ready”, you’ll be waiting forever. The truth is you’re never ready and you have to be prepared to stumble a little. It’s part of the journey. 9. Do you consider yourself an entrepreneur? Why? DESI: I do consider myself an entrepreneur because I took the initiative to build something on my own and its future is completely up to me. CHRISSPY: Sure, I’m an entrepreneur! Social media has given me a voice and a platform to share what I love with the world. 10. Do you consider yourself a celebrity? Why or Why not? DESI: No, I am just being myself. I’m lucky to have a lot of friends who are interested in the same things as I am. CHRISSPY: Haha no, I’m not a celebrity. Social media influencers are successful because they are not celebrities. I’m just like everyone else, I’d like to think that I’m pretty relatable. 11. What advice would you give to your younger self? DESI: Just keep going. CHRISSPY: I would tell myself, through my hard times, to just trust that life has a plan in store for me. Sometimes when it seems like nothing is going your way, it’s because you’re actually meant to go in a different direction. 12. Is there anything new on the horizon for Ipsy that you can tell us about? DESI: Yes, there are always exciting things on the horizon. You’ll have to stay tuned! CHRISSPY: Umm, there is a photo shoot with a helicopter coming up! 13. What was the biggest investment or choice you made that flipped the switch from hobby to business? Was it a web designer, a course, a camera, an ad placement? DESI: My husband Steven persuaded me to download the Intsagram app and pushed me to start my YouTube channel. CHRISSPY: Definitely my camera! When I first started filming YouTube videos, I was using a cheap web cam that made my skin look terrible. I still have my first “real” camera I bought; it was a refurbished Nikon D5100, it’s awesome!

5 BEACH AB MOVES

by Candace Marie Cottet of FromCtoC.com

1 V-Ups! Starting in a hollow boat position, use your arms to reach passed your legs, lifting your back and legs into a V position. Hold your core tight. Inhale up, Exhale down. Repeat.

2

Plank-Ups. Start in the plank position. Alternate from hand to elbows. Think: Hand, Hand, Elbow, Elbow. Remember to keep your length! Stretching your heels back to the imaginary wall behind you, keeping your core tight, and neck long.

Sprinters Crunch. Add a little umph to your crunch by switching to a Sprinters position. Really reaching your elbow to your knee and cinching your waist. Twisting is great for your abs and squeezes out the toxins stuck in your organs.

3

4 Heel Touches. In a regular crunch, with your arms by your side, lift your chest, and without resting, in between tap from left heel to right. Swinging from side to side. Make sure to flatten your tummy. And breathe!

5

17

Superman. Another full body move! Make sure to tighten your core and use it to lift your chest, arms and legs off the ground. Reaching your fingers and toes to give your body all the length you can! For an added bonus squeeze your legs together and pulse. Lift for 3 counts, Hold for 3 counts.
