North Wilson wins MKO grand chief election DEVAN C. TASA An award-winning journalist found that she couldn’t simply report on issues facing northern First Nations, so she ran for grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak – and won.

Sheila North Wilson, originally from the Bunibonibee Cree Nation, was elected to the position at a general assembly in Nelson House Sept. 2.

“I felt that I knew the issues far too well not to do my part in addressing some of them,” she said. “Work-

ing in the media, but also growing up in the North, I’ve come to know a lot of the concerns that our First Nations have and I felt that I had to help.”

The MKO is a political advocacy organization that represents 30 First Nation communities in Northern Manitoba. The grand chief is elected with the votes of the chiefs, headmen and councillors of the member First Nations. Also running for the position were incumbent David Harper, Tyler Duncan and William Elvis Thomas.

The first candidate to get more than 50 per cent of the total vote wins; North Wilson won with 74 votes out of a total 132 on the second ballot.

North Wilson ran on a platform based on four major areas.

One of those focused on empowering families. One of the ways she’d like to do that is by keeping them together through the Child and Family Services system instead of separating them.

“Studies have shown that CFS and separating families doesn’t improve lives, so we need to find different solutions and different ways of helping families that are in need or in trouble,” she said.

She also wants to keep – and enhance – the Band constable program, as it helps fill a need in keeping people safe and push for an inquiry on missing Indigenous women – and men.

Treaty implementation was another area. North Wilson said she wants to get negotiations moving for MKO’s member nations.

North Wilson’s third campaign focus was increasing economic independence and looking a new ways at doing that, either through social enterprises or with new partners to support that’s been done.

The remaining focus is ensuring good governance at the MKO. Reviewing governance is North Wilson’s first priority as grand chief.

“The first thing I want to do is look at the governance system that’s in place and do a review of the finances and see what’s working and what’s not, what’s helping and what’s impeding progress,” she said. “We should get a handle on that and go from there.”

When North Wilson found out she had won, she said she felt happy, relived and

encouraged.

“I felt so proud of our people and our leaders for taking a bold step and calling for change. They don’t want to be reaching the status quo and do everything they’ve already done, they want to move forward and advance,” she said. “I’m very happy to be part of this change and when I heard I won the election I had to take a moment to savour it because I did feel the historic significance of it but also I felt a great responsibility and I’m up for the challenge.”

North Wilson is also the first female grand chief in the MKO’s 34-year history.

“People are excited about the fact that I am the first female Grand Chief of MKO. People are happy about that – and so am I – but that wasn’t my intention to run and be that,” she said. “I just wanted to help and be here to help our communities.

2016 will see bogs combined!

Seems you can’t get a break this year when hosting an outdoor event that relies somewhat on decent weather to attract participants and spectators. Nonetheless, Chris Chell says his late August Truck Bogs were successful in spite of the weather and he was happy with the interest shown from outside the community.

“The weather was dreary, but oh well,” said the organizer of an event that is sure to grow in coming years. “It probably went off just as well as the last one, if not better because of all the guys from out-of-town. Most out-oftowners brought family; they all commented on how much they enjoyed it.”

Chell advised that there were only two people from Snow Lake entered in the bogs, the rest were from Thompson and Flin Flon, with about 145 spectators watching the trucks perform.

This event was standalone for its inception year, but Chell plans to combine it with the Quad/ UTV Bogs that were held early in August and put the entire show on during the August long weekend

“Saturday it will be quads and UTV’s and then Sunday, I’ll dig the berm out between the pits and throw clay in to let the trucks run,” he said, noting that the modifications to the pit are fairly substantial between the two events, which includes widening the area and lengthening it by 60 feet.

Although the premise is the same in both bogs, the hardware is upsized in Truck Bogs. There’s no running side by side as that, Chell says assuredly, would be a recipe for disaster.

“Equipment is a lot bigger and moves around a lot more. It would have to be a pretty big pit to handle two trucks.”

Boat that I reported on in this column several weeks back. Firstly, the Flin Flon Station Museum is currently investigating the financial implications of removal and restoration of the vessel; secondly, a carpenter who spent numerous summers maintaining the craft has come forward.

Bob Mote has lived in Flin Flon since 1940. A carpenter by trade, he worked in HBM&S’s Flin Flon carpenter shop for a number of years. He was in Snow Lake a month or so ago and picked up a copy of The Underground Press. From the photos of the boat therein, he recognized what he believes is the hull of a watercraft he knew well.

Mote says that, as far as he knows and without looking at it (in person), it is the same boat.

“It didn’t have a painted cabin back then, it was all oak finish,” he said. “I was involved with it in the 1950’s.

I was working in the company carpenter shop at the time and I spent quite a few summers in a duck boat under that boat repairing the bottom of it, the hull of it.

It was on slings in the boathouse at the company warehouse.”

Mr. Mote even came up with the name for the vessel.

“That boat was called the ‘Gay Marie’ and that name was evidently given by one of the wheels of the company – I think it was (W.A.) Baldy Green’s daughter – whose name was Marie,” Mote revealed. “They were using that boat, past the rock era, when it was all refurbished inside, as a tour boat.” He says it was used specifically to ferry any of the executives that came to town to the cabins of company officials at Baker’s Narrows. “At that time, that was all that boat was used for and it was only used a couple times a season,” Mote recalled.

“It was stored in the little boathouse on the shore of Schist Lake near the company airport. And that is where I worked on it.”

So the ore boat became a tour boat and now it is somewhat of a planter for weeds and saplings.

Perhaps someday it will be restored to its former elegance and the ‘Gay Marie’ will sit in a welldeserved place of prominence at the Flin Flon Station Museum!

Split Lake water system will need upgrades DEVAN C. TASA The community of Split Lake will need major upgrades to its water and sewer system to avoid more boil water advisories.

The Tataskweyak Cree Nation conďŹ rmed they have ordered a boil water advisory in a release issued Sept. 4.

As of Sept. 8, Duke Beardy, the nation’s chief, said that advisory was still in effect. “We’re getting close to lifting the boil water advisory.

They’re making progress on the temporary ďŹ x-up on the water system,â€? he said, adding that they were testing the right mix of chemicals

Beardy said. “What we’re doing is just making a temporary ďŹ x right now to ensure it works for a tiny bit.â€?

The whole system was designed for a smaller

population. The intake system brings in signiďŹ cant loads of sediment from the lake due to changes in the water ow from hydro projects. The sewage lagoon overows and spills into the nearby lake regularly. “The system is starting to fail on us. It’s dated. It’s been here many years,â€? Beardy said. “The system that we’ve got has been there for years and it’s just not able to do its job any longer.â€?

When the system is working the quality of the water is poor. “There’s a lot of people that will not drink the water,�

Beardy said. “There’s been sicknesses that people have determined that’s contributed by the quality of water that we have. Not everybody can afford to buy bottled water.�

Any work to upgrade – or replace – the water system would have to come from Aboriginal and Northern Development Canada. The nation has been meeting with them for years about this issue, but to date no capital funding has been given.

Beady said he and his council will continue to put pressure on the AANDC and the federal government.

“What we’re going to do is determine the ďŹ nal estimates on what we need and knowing that the election is on we’re still going to applying pressure to the government regionally and to the headquarters in Ottawa,â€? he said “It’s time for an overhaul of our system and that’s what we need to do. We may even need to consider a different source of water supply from an nearby lake.â€?

A new water system is something that needs to be looked at seriously, said Beardy, who added that he hoped to work with AANDC to ďŹ nd a solution.

Candidates debate violence plan The region’s New Democrat and Liberal candidates traded barbs over a plan to end violence against women.

Tom Mulcair, the leader of the New Democrats, pledged to work with women’s groups and Indigenous communities to create comprehensive and co-ordinated national action plan to end violence against women Aug. 31. “Violence against women still remains systemic and

widespread in Canada,� said Niki Ashton, the NDP candidate for Churchill—Keewatinook Aski, in a release. “Since my election to the House of Commons, I have been calling for real action because women are 11 times more likely to be victims of sexual offences.�

The NDP’s plan will have dedicated funding and clear benchmarks. The plan will focus on women who are most vulnerable to violence, including Indigenous

women. The NDP have also committed to hold an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women within 100 days of taking ofďŹ ce.

The Liberals responded with a statement from Ralph Goodale, the deputy leader, saying the NDP wouldn’t be able to fund that promise. “The Liberal attack on the NDP’s commitment to end violence against women is disturbing,� Ashton said in a subsequent release. “The Liberals are opposing the

NDP’s concrete plan to help the most vulnerable women in our country, so they don’t have to ask the largest corporations to pay their fair share. That’s wrong.�

Rebecca Chartrand, the Liberal candidate, said in a release Ashton was being so intentionally misleading and outrageous the NDP should formally apologize.

She added the next government would have to commit to addressing the root causes at the community level.
