When it comes to rail service, Churchill residents are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a passenger train set to arrive Dec. 4 after a twoday trip from Winnipeg.

This will mark the first time that a Via Rail train has pulled into Churchill since May 2017, when severe flooding washed away multiple sections of the Hudson Bay Railway (HBR).

Since the rail line is the only land link out of Churchill, Mayor Mike Spence said this is an important development for residents, especially with Christmas right around the corner.

Grade 8 student council member put Juniper School into the limelight by presenting onstage at WE Day

When Grade 8 Juniper School student Winter Ross got involved in student council three years ago as a fifth-grader, she didn’t imagine where it would take her.

But last month, Ross was one of the students in attendance at WE Day in Winnipeg who had the chance to get up on stage and address the thousands of other participants.

Ross talked about her school’s WE Walk for Water event last April, when students at the school took a three-kilometre trek around Thompson, as well as Juniper raising money to dig a well in Kenya.

“I volunteered to speak at our local radio station about WE Walk for Water, donating money and the importance of clean water in Kenya,” Ross said in her brief speech.

“Additionally, this past July some of our teachers went to Kenya on a ME to WE trip and saw the

impact of the wells that we raised money for.”

When she first found out she had been selected to speak on stage at WE Day, Ross wasn’t enthusiastic.

“At first I didn’t want to do it at all,” Ross said, but she practised so that when the big moment came, she would be ready. “That was my first time in front of 14,000 to 16,000 people. When I got up there I didn’t feel nervous. I felt relieved.

I’d been thinking of it for two weeks and practising.

I read it over and over on the bus and at home and at school. When you just actually do it it’s easier than saying it to yourself.”

Juniper counsellor Sherry Alexander, who submitted Ross’s name for consideration as an onstage presenter at WE Day, said the people watching her in the audience, which included many of Ross’s fellow students back in Thompson via videolink, may

have been more nervous.

“We were just so nervous for her but she did an amazing job,” said Alexander, noting that Ross’s mother and father and grandmother were also in the crowd in Winnipeg.

“They actually joined us and they got to see her go up on stage.”

Ross says that water-related issues hit close to home for her, since not everyone has easy access to drinkable water, whether they are on a First Nation in Canada or a rural area in Kenya, like the one Alexander and other Juniper teachers went to over the summer to help build a well, along with some other Thompsonites.

“They probably don’t even know how clean water tastes,” said Ross.

“They have to go walk kilometres to go get water. They still have to do a job to boil it. We just turn on a tap.”

Garbage in the ocean is another concern of Ross’s, based on images

and videos she’s seen.

“There was so much garbage in it and it just made my heart drop,” she said.

Alexander said she nominated Ross to be an onstage presenter because of how much effort she put into student council and Green Team projects last year.

“She really stepped up in Grade 7 and really became a positive leader,” Alexander says.

The WE Walk for Water is only one of the WE projects Ross and other Juniper students take part in. Other recent ones include We Rise Above, about cyberbullying, and a silence campaign in support of those – like refugees, child labourers and child brides – who don’t a have a voice themselves.

Ross says it’s easy to get motivated to participate in projects like these.

“It inspires me,” she says. “It makes me want to do what other people are doing: helping.”

Council chambers were unusually quiet for the Nov. 26 council meeting, since the mayor and four councillors were attending the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) annual convention in Winnipeg.

All of these absent council members, including Mayor Colleen Smook, were able to phone in to maintain quorum for Monday’s meeting, which allowed them and the three physically present councillors − Kathy Valentino, Duncan Wong and Judy Kolada − to pass a couple of key resolutions.

First up was a resolution to bestow the upcoming Thompson Fur Table with “special event” status, which would waive a special event status license fee worth $464.

Council carried this resolution unanimously, with mover Kolada saying that the fur table is an annual Thompson tradition that everyone should check out Dec. 14−15 at St. Joseph’s Hall.

Operation Red Nose designated drivers will start keeping city streets safe Nov. 30

The pre-Christmas holiday season is picking up steam and Operation Red Nose will be there to help revellers get home safety from parties every weekend beginning Nov. 30.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the designated driving service in Thompson and Red Nose committee president Nelly Duarte said at the kickoff Nov. 16 that donations have grown at an outstanding pace since the first year of the program – which offers people who have been drinking rides home in their own cars.

“In our first year we had 102 volunteers come out and raise $935 for the community,” said Duarte.

“In 2017 we had over 100 volunteers and we raised about $15,000 for the community.”

With all those donations – the service itself is free – being directed toward local youth-oriented organizations, Operation Red Nose clients know that their generosity is benefiting the community.

Some of the people most thankful for the service aren’t drivers, however. They’re emergency responders.

“We will never know the

positive effects your group will have on our community but I think you can take pride in knowing every individual you provide a ride home is one less potential impaired driver on our streets,” said Thompson RCMP detachment officer-in-charge Insp. Brian Edmonds. “I also want to recognize your work in ensuring not only the physical but mental well being of all emergency services personnel which is so important today with our partners at the fire department and EMS. Impaired driving motor vehicle collision investigations needlessly put all front-line police responders in harm’s way. The potential mental health impact impaired driving incidents have on emergency personnel every day in this country is real and something that you can take pride in knowing you had an effect on.”

Thompson MLA Kelly Bindle said as impressive as keeping the service going for 20 years is, what’s more impressive is that some of the people involved have been part of the program the whole time.

“It’s that volunteer spirit that makes these programs a success,” says Bindle, adding that even one prevented accident is well worth their

efforts. “A disaster ruins it for everyone and you guys help prevent it. Your job is eternal vigilance and we’re so happy to have you.”

Operation Red Nose nodded to its past headquarters host the Lakeview Inn & Suites by naming its former managers Cheryl Campbell and Michelle Husarski as this year’s honorary committee chairs. The Thompson YWCA is the new site of their headquarters and executive director Kim Hickes said she was happy to have them.

“You give back to the youth in the community,” she said. “We’re about that, we’re about families and it was just fitting that you came to the Y and we look forward to a long-term relationship with Operation Red Nose.”

Mayor Colleen Smook said she spent many years providing rides home and hoped she would have the chance to do it again.

“For about 10, 11 years I was here just about every year doing at least two or three shifts,” said Smook.

“I can remember nights that I wasn’t even due to work I’d get a phone call midnight or one o’clock – ‘We’ve got a standard truck, nobody can drive it.’ Operation Red Nose is just such a great thing in this town

Union petition opposes closing of Liquor Mart in Churchill and contracting alcohol sales to private vendor IAN GRAHAM

The union that represents Manitoba Liquor Mart employees has collected 300 signatures in just a few days on a petition asking Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL) to shelve plans to shut down their outlet in Churchill and contract liquor sales to a private vendor instead.

“We started a petition a couple of days ago and actually it’s amazing, we’ve gotten over 300 signatures already on it as of today so people are in support of this across the province,’ said Michelle Gawronsky, president of the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU), which has four members employed at the Liquor Mart in Churchill, including one full-time employee on term assignment from Winnipeg and three part-time employees who are residents of Churchill. “They’re not 300 people from Churchill. This is

across the province. People understand that a good-paying job in a small community, if you take those away, that’s a local community and a local economy that’s going to hurt.”

Plans to move liquor sales to a private vendor in the Hudson Bay port town were first reported in October, with MBLL saying that sales had dropped at the store because of the opening of a liquor store in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

An MBLL spokesperson said officials would be visiting Churchill retailers early next year to provide expression of interest documents and that those applications would be evaluated to select the best-suited store to sell liquor.

“This is our standard process for evaluating retailer applications to establish a liquor retail outlet in rural communities, and we expect the process to be complete toward the end of March 2019,” said the spokesperson.

“My question becomes who’s next on the chopping block because if this isn’t the highest-profit store and you close it now we have another one that’s not the highest-profit store.”

Gawronsky also says that the knock-on effect of losing four union jobs would be less money being spent at other businesses in town.

“The local economy is going to hurt and one person who already has a business in town that is making a profit is going to make a bigger profit and that money is not going to be returned to the community now,” she said. “It’s going to hurt the community, no two ways around it. It’s not like the new store’s going to be hiring anybody, he’s just going to sell the bottles off his shelf. The sale of alcohol in Manitoba, it brings in millions of dollars and that money goes into our provincial coffers and then it’s used for schools and education and health care and programs for kids and families so some of that money we know would have been returned to the community of Churchill.

Thompson Children’s World daycare celebrates official opening of brighter, airier space

Thompson Children’s World daycare celebrated the official grand opening of its Westwood Mall location Nov. 13, about a yearand-a-half and a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of renovations after first taking up residence.

“We’re happy to share this happy occasion with you and although we have overcome many obstacles to be here today, there’s always a chance for the centre to grow to become a larger part of our community,” said executive director Dana Cyrenne, who received a certificate of appreciation from Thompson Mayor Colleen Smook. “Without all of the love and support the centre has received we would not be standing where we are right now.”

Thompson Children’s World moved to the mall, which also houses Giant Tiger, from its former location in the United Steelworkers Local 6166 Steel Centre on Elizabeth Drive.

“When we were in the Steel Centre we had a very small space,” says Cyrenne. “We only had enough room for 48 children so we’ve expanded 12 spaces and we’ve expanded close to 600 square feet more of usable space that we have here so it’s really great. We have the fenced yard and it’s all grassed in and everything for the kids. This is more accessible to all the families.”

The daycare had to round up $300,000 for the renovations.

“We had no dollars lying around so it was kind of a leap of faith to come into the space,” said Cyrenne.

“We were waiting for a lot of provincial funding and there were moratoriums on everything and we had to wait but it all eventually worked out and came through. We did a lot of fundraising, lots of weekends and evenings. It was very touch and go there for a while for us.”

Churchill-Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton, whose assistant Danielle Adams is on the Thompson Children’s World board, said she knows how difficult it was to raise that money.

“It was very important for me to advocate and support the application for federal funding for your daycare and I’m here to support the work that you do every single day,” she said. “I have the deepest admiration for the work

Anyone who is in the mood to drum up some holiday cheer should drop by the Letkemann Theatre Dec. 5, since Thompson resident Donna Wilson will be putting on her 10th Old-Fashioned

Wilson started this annual event back in 2009 to give local dancers, musicians and stage actors a time to shine at a hectic time of year.

AFM North highlights coping mechanisms

For this year’s Manitoba Substance Use and Addictions Awareness Week, which runs Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) decided to shine a light on the people who are often on the receiving end of someone’s struggle with drug abuse.

“When people think about addiction treatment and support, they often focus on the person with the substance use disorder,” said Jamie Tompkins, director of AFM Brandon. “Family and friends, however, are greatly affected by a loved one’s use as well.”

In Thompson, members

of AFM North are putting this thought into action by making the rounds at local elementary schools and letting students know how they can take care of themselves when they are in close proximity to an addict.

“I think there’s probably about 12 different talks in different schools going on with the kids,” said AFM North director Gisele deMeulles. “They’re just highlighting what kids need to look out for, healthy options, that kind of thing.”

Some of these coping strategies include getting enough sleep, drinking more water or engaging in relaxation activities like meditation or yoga.

According to deMeulles, AFM North provides residents of Thompson and surrounding communities with access to an 18-bed treatment centre, a five-bed withdrawal unit and a new rapid access to addictions medicine (RAAM) clinic that is designed to connect drug- and alcohol-addicted patients with medical professional and treatments as quickly as possible.

Even though AFM North’s staff is stretched a little thin due to their current patient intake, deMeulles said anyone interested in signing up for these programs in the future can drop by 90 Princeton Drive and see the facility for themselves.

“If people have questions, feel free to come down and just ask for a tour,” she said.

“Ask questions, inspect some pamphlets. We’re here to give out all that information. Don’t be afraid to do that. We’re here to help.”

The closure of the smelter and refinery in Thompson has had a significant negative effect already. Despite this a visiting provincial cabinet minister talked about it being “exciting times for Thompson.” The City of Thompson was unable to even get a meeting with the premier to discuss its concerns about the mining reserve fund.

Now the community of Flin Flon has been hard hit with the announcement of the closure. While this has been seen as a possibility for a while it will have significant negative impact on the community.
