Twelve members of the Manitoba RCMP are now certifi ed Ice Rescue Technicians (IRTs) after undergoing two days of frigid training at Paint Lake March 5-6.

The officers dipped into

the lake while the air temperature was -15 degrees Celsius in order to learn how to help themselves and others should an ice rescue be necessary.

The officers learned techniques to save themselves if they fall through

the ice and how to assist others who have gone through the ice.

As part of the training, some officers entered the water through the hole in the ice on Paint Lake wearing their regular uniforms as they put classroom techniques

into action.

There are about 35 IRTs in Manitoba “D” Division, most of them based in Northern Manitoba.

The RCMP’s ice rescue training program is also supported by Manitoba Hydro.

Thirteen mushers from Churchill, Minnesota, Quebec and Ontario set out today from Gillam in hopes of becoming the 2015 Hudson Bay Quest dogsled race champions after 35 hours or more of solitary sledding from Gillam to Churchill.

The number of racers is down from the normal maximum of 17, says Bill Dingwall, Hudson Bay Quest race chairman, because of a few late withdrawals. Back in November, when registration opened there was a full slate and others on a waiting list.

This is the fourth year that the race has been run between Gillam and Churchill. The race began in 2004 and for several years covered a route between Churchill and Arviat, Nunavut.

Currently, the main concern for mushers is the weather, which is due to warm up the same day – March 13 - that the racers depart from Gillam at noon.

“Some of the mushers are a bit concerned it might be too warm,” Dingwall says, noting that the dogs have been training in -30 Celsius temperatures but the thermometer may rise up to around zero degrees by race time. “That’s going to be difficult for the dogs to run in.”

The race is going the opposite way of last year’s, so this year it will be Churchill’s chance to host the race-ending banquet when the of-

ficial winners are announced.

For Dingwall, though, the start is more exciting.

Prior to becoming race chairman, he served on the starting committee after once mentioning to his father-in-law, David Daley of Churchill, who created the Hudson Bay Quest, that he felt the start could be better organized.

“I find the start more exciting,” says Dingwall. “You have everybody there.”

By contrast, mushers can finish several hours apart and cross the finish line in the middle of the night with maybe only a dozen race officials and veterinarians to witness it, compared to about 200 people who turned out for the start of last year’s race in Churchill.

One of the attractions of the race for competitors, Dingwall says, is the requirement that racers be self-sufficient and carry all the gear they need to ride out inclement weather, including a tent, a cooker and fuel as well as a SPOT check device so race officials and interested observers can track the racers’ progress. The course covers about 320 kilometres of sub-arctic wilderness and includes

a mandatory six-hour stop in M’Clintock.

“You have to have everything you need to get there,” Dingwall says, adding that the element of chance plays a big role in who wins.

“The Hudson Bay Quest is hard for anybody to win. It’s just happenstance. It’s the unknown that truly makes this race.”

A testament to the role of luck is the fact that the race has never had back-to-back winners.

The race is sponsored and supported by Calm Air, Via Rail and the Hudson Bay Railway, as well as by volunteers, particularly the 4th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, who patrol the race route beginning the day before the race and continuing until all the racers are done.

“They’re our support team for the mushers out there,” Dingwall says.

If race conditions are good, mushers could be showing up in Churchill by 11 o’clock on Saturday night.

In an interview after the presentation, Zamzow was both humbled and appreciative of the acknowledgement and shared a bit of his background in respect to his service to the country and the Legion itself.

Zamzow advised that he fi rst became involved with the Armed Forces because he wanted to get into photography. “I was led to believe – and it was true – that the military would provide me that opportunity,” said the former mayor of the Town of Snow Lake. “So I jumped at that chance.

Unfortunately I never made good on the opportunity, but that was my intention from day one.”

Prior to his arrival in Snow Lake, Zamzow did a three-year hitch in the Canadian Navy. He was stationed on several ships during his tour – from supply ships to destroyer escorts. He guesses if he was to look back at that time, the most memorable ship he was posted to was the HMCS St. Laurent. “She took me and my crewmates on an exercise/cruise whereby we left Esquimalt harbour in B.C. in the first week of January and we never returned home until the third week of September,”

It was a very remarkable experience that I’ll always cherish, for sure.”

Zamzow left the Navy with the rank of an able seaman and arrived in Snow Lake 1966. He said that it didn’t take long for his time in the Navy to pay dividends. During his fi rst shift, he was tying a bowline and his shifter asked him how he’d learned to do it … he replied, “In the Navy!”

Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the local Legion. “I look back on that with very fine memories,” Zamzow says of joining the organization. “My experience with

the Legion goes back to being appointed bingo chairman. I did that for a good many years, and that provided a lot of entertainment. The Legion used to be full of bingo players, and it also provided a revenue base for the club as well.”

Over the years, the vet was involved in the Legion as a worker when there were little jobs to do, and also was part of several elected executives. “I had a couple of vice-presidency positions and supported a number of presidents over those years,” he said. “When I go into the Legion and see the presidents’ photos on the walls there, it always warms my heart;

because I know most all of those individuals and I know the effort that they put into keeping the branch growing, operating, and functioning.

Actually, the night I was presented my 50th year certifi cate and medal, I looked up at those pictures and it occurred to me that those individuals were very instrumental in keeping the branch going … and today we have new individuals putting the same effort into keeping the branch going. It provides that friendly place to go and socialize, have a drink and become real Snow Lakers. I have a fondness in my heart for the local branch and for everything they do.”

Recently I have revisited reading “Mere Christianity”

by C.S. Lewis. If you are not familiar with C.S. Lewis as an author, you may recognize the series “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe,” or “Chronicles of Narnia”. In my opinion, he is a brilliant author and in this book he brings amazing concepts about Christianity to light. Some of what I am writing in this article is inspired by this book.

One thing we can all relate to is morality. We all want to be “good” people and make the “right decisions” whether a Christian or not. In the case of morality or moral standards we may learn this from our parents, how we were raised or by the influence from those around us. One might say, “I have good morals, therefore I am a good person.” But how do we maintain the status of “good morals” and therefore become a “good person?”

destination. If you compare this to morality, you could say that those who desire to uphold morality would resemble ships sailing in that formation. If our world looked like this then everything would be “smooth sailing”, however, we do not live in a perfect world and like ships we all need to guidance to avoid a collision and must maintain our inner parts to function properly. The question we must all ask ourselves is how can we achieve this? How do we maintain morality in a world that has so many temptations and where humanity is broken? The only true and

perfect one I know is Jesus Christ.

“How high and long and wide, and deep is the love of Christ” Ephesians 3:18 “For God so loved the world that he gave is one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 With God by our side who gave His one and only son, He fixes the broken inner parts and guides us like ships in a formation all headed for that same goal. Jesus sets the example of morality we must follow because he is perfect and sinless and has taken away the sin of the world. So my challenge to you is to let God guide your ship today and forever, turn to Jesus, He is waiting for you.

Steve Ashton focuses on Thompson after leadership loss

Steve Ashton may have lost the race to become premier of Manitoba, but he still is a winner in his own eyes. “I’ve been keeping in touch with constituency issues. I have not been elected leader, but I am still MLA for Thompson. As we speak I’m in my offi ce at the Manitoba Legislature and I’m going through various cases.”

Ashton joked about getting an imaginary bronze medal from the race. “One thing I stressed throughout the campaign was that at the end of the leadership process the importance of unity. That’s been the key thing for me for the past few days, doing what I can to make sure the party is united and we can put the events of the last few months behind us and move forward.”

Pleased with his campaign, Ashton thanked the province for supporting

ers. “It was a great feeling knowing I had support back home and encouragement. I’m proud of my Steelworkers roots, and it meant a lot getting their support. We had quite a few Steelworkers down from Thompson at the convention, which was really encouraging.”

One of the most important things the former minister of infrastructure and transportation accomplished during the race was having the opportunity to connect with the province. “What I can really remember from the campaign is realizing the diversity of the province. I was really proud of the diversity of the support we received.”

In the end Greg Selinger picked up 759 of the possible 1,490 votes during the second round of voting on Mar. 8. In the first round, Ashton picked up 502 ballots, Theresa Oswald received 575, and Selinger had 612.

After Ashton was booted, he encouraged his delegates to pick whomever they wanted to support. “The key element was I felt that people should decide which of the two candidates they wanted to support, I trusted their judgment.

People went various different ways, some went one way, and some went the other. For me I think it certainly may help with rebuilding the unity of the party.”

The Thompsonite says it’s been an intense three months and is looking forward to arriving back to Thompson.

OBITUARY DOUGLAS PEARSON February 5, 1942 - February 28, 2015 It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Douglas (Doug) Pearson. Peacefully at his home on February 28, 2015 in Thompson, Manitoba at age 73.

Loving father to Craig (Kristina) and Melissa. Proud grandpa to Anna. Doug will also be missed by many family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Sylvia Pearson, and his brother Melvin.

Originally from Flin Flon, Doug spent the last 50 years of his life in Thompson. He worked as a plumber, and retired from the School District of Mystery Lake in 2007.

Doug was a dear friend to many. He loved hockey, hunting, fishing and coffee at Robin’s with his buddies. He enjoyed remembering his youthful days in Flin Flon as a player and coach for the Bombers.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 1P6.

A Memorial Service will be held later this month in Thompson.

Doug’s ashes will be laid to rest in Fisher Branch this summer.

Budget must make good jobs the first priority It is clear that one of the top priorities with the upcoming federal budget has to be the creation of good jobs.

That was the clear message from our caucus in the House of Commons.

With the CIBC reporting that job quality is at its lowest level in 20 years, and that low-paying jobs are becoming the norm, the NDP’s opposition day motion calls on the Conservatives to make investing in good, middle class jobs the ďŹ rst priority of Budget 2015.

Rogers Hometown Hockey may have brought the warmer weather up to Thompson on March 7-8, but it was still chilly. Outside warm up tents were set up all around the Thompson Regional Community centre to keep Thompsonites warm while still enjoying the festivities.

Tents included air hockey, dome and bubble hockey machines, and even a place to sit down and relax while watching hockey on televisions, or even read a magazine on some ipads.

She/ he acts as receptionist to the Health Program staff, actions and screens information requests and greets walk in clients. This is a faced paced and busy role which is central to the coordination of Health Services at the Tribal Council.

Winterfest had a guest on March. 8, named Tillie. Tillie is a little mouse that lives in the cellar of an opera house, and loves singing opera. Melanie Gall puts on the musical theatre performance. Gall grew up in Alberta, but now resides in New York.

Opera Mouse the show has travelled all over the world helping kids accept opera, and even learn a few notes.

The show in Thompson happened during the 2015 Winterfest. It saw children and parents fill the Thompson Regional Community Centre to learn the story of Tillie, and learn the art of singing opera. At the end children had the opportunity to sing and even help out small Tillie.
