Churchill Northern Studies Centre adds culinary experience to learning vacation Participants in the Churchill Northern Studies Centre North of 58 learning vacation this March will have the chance to partake of a number of oncein-a-lifetime opportunities, including the RAWChurchill culinary experience – a meal prepared by world-class chefs under the northern lights at the Prince of Wales Fort.

The five-day program also includes a dog sled ride, data collection with a subarctic researcher and a snowmobile ride onto the sea ice of Hudson Bay, as well as museum visits and lectures on topics from wildlife to indigenous cultures.

“RAWchurchill is an exciting addition to our North of 58 program and an amazing opportunity for our participants,” said Stephanie Puleo, Churchill Northern Studies Centre program co-ordinator.

“Travelling across the frozen river in a Tundra Buggy is truly unique to Churchill, and getting the chance to see northern lights above Prince of Wales Fort, national historic site is incredible.

The opportunity to visit the fort and learn about Canadian history while enjoying an amazing meal compliments our program perfectly!”

The Churchill Northern Studies Centre is a nonprofit research and education centres 23 kilometres east of Churchill that was founded in 1976.

In early 2015, Paproski read in the news that Thompson was being labelled as the Wolf Capital of the World.

After some preliminary investigation, he reached out to Spirit Way Inc. (SWI) to form an alliance that could be beneficial in fulfilling the destiny of his two wolves.

After a few months of introductory emails, Paproski learned that Spirit Way had almost completed a large state-of-the-art wolf habitat in a natural setting at the Boreal Discovery Centre. As no wolves were yet living in the 1.25-acre space, SWI felt it would be an appropriate time to invite the filmmaker to Thompson to explore possibilities. Paproski arrived at same time that actor and musician Tom Jackson was in Thompson for a benefit concert for the Wolf Capital of the World campaign.

Thanks to complimentary passes from Calm Air and hotel room and meals provided by the Meridian Hotel, Paproski was hosted for several days in Thompson.

The filmmaker said he was impressed with the passionate SWI volunteers he met who were devoting a large amount of time in helping their community. The hospitable nature of the residents in this northern city quickly shone through.

While Paproski was in town, SWI board members kept him very busy. He did some candid filming of the Tom Jackson concert, toured the Boreal Discovery Centre, showed some of his company’s films at a screening, spoke at elementary schools to classes of young students, was interviewed

by CBC North and the local newspaper, and spoke to Thompson Unlimited, the local economic develop-

For SWI directors, this was a new area of interest and economic development that had never been considered in Thompson before. Paproski made reference to the many wildlife film festivals worldwide and the huge market for such films. He would be willing to organize such a film festival in Thompson.

A preliminary plan emerged to prepare a documentary film, The Journey of Two Wolve’, about Paproski’s wolves, Timber and Aurora, that could visit Thompson and become ambassadors for the Wolf Capital of the World. By coincidence, Timber is the same name as the SWI mascot! A unique, educational wolf film could be broadcast on television and the Internet and draw attention to Thompson in the wildlife film market.

Key messaging would communicate that Thompson’s

willingness to co-exist with wolves can help develop ecotourism and the economy, and set a strong example to the world. As an apex predator species, undisturbed wolves can reinforce the need for protection of the Canadian boreal forest, the largest intact ecosystem in the world. Negative and wrongful issues that malign wolves could be addressed correctly in the film to help overcome longstanding myths and fears. A strong educational slant would align with Spirit Way’s intention to develop a best practices model for all things wolf and cover wolf issues such as captivity, poaching, trapping, trophy and helicopter hunting. Other positive angles for a northern film could be made on behalf of animals, aboriginal peoples, the environment, and the community. It became obvious there was great potential for more than one film and even a series of TV and online documentaries.

Last year, president of SWI, Marion Morberg, and Paproski began marketing the film project at the annual On-Screen Manitoba All Access Forum held in Winnipeg. They met with potential broadcasters and co-production partners that could assist in getting a wolf film released to the international market and at film festivals.

Morberg quickly recognized that more discussion should happen with Thompson and industry players including Manitoba Film about developing a media industry in the north. While in Winnipeg, Morberg and Paproski met with Phil Lafontaine, the former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

He was willing to assist and advocate how helping wolves would be beneficial for northerners.

Paproski also introduced Morberg to his associate Dr. Ken MacQuisten, owner of Grouse Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Dr. MacQuisten provided very helpful advice regarding rescued wolves, as well as how SWI could take advantage of the wildlife film industry.

Recently, SWI submitted a proposal for a Canada 150th Anniversary grant to celebrate Canada’s wildlife and wilderness that would include eight days of events, called “Wild Borealis.” Planned activities would include bringing Aurora and Timber to Thompson for public engagement, educational experiences at schools and special events, and filmmaking in the Wolf Capital of the World. A wolf pack’s complex intelligence and social behaviour could be studied by local volunteers and youth to learn how to care for rescued animals in captivity.

Paproski expressed optimism to be invited to Thompson for the 150th anniversary in the fall with animal handler, Laura Dougan, and his camera crew. His team would travel across many scenic landscapes from the Badlands in Alberta to the boreal forest of Northern Manitoba. The trip would be documented for sharing on social media and a future documentary wolf film.

Paproski smiled when his creative mind suggested that community and indigenous leaders could be invited to gather for a special closing ceremony at Thompson’s 150th celebrations and gatherings. Great reverence could be made to Timber, Aurora and all wolves in the north, as indigenous people have always held high respect for this animal. After seeing firsthand the new wolf habitat at the Boreal Discovery Centre, Paproski remarked, “This is the best space I have seen in Canada. Some day when Timber and Aurora are ready to retire, it might be a great place for them to visit or stay in the Wolf Capital of the World.”

Spiritual food is also life-sustaining I remember the first time that I had the wonderful opportunity to eat deep-fried bannock. I did not grow up in the North and as such, bannock just was not a part of my diet.

A few years ago, I spent some time living in The Pas in Umpherville and was part of the local church there. There was this one time when we were having a potluck that deep-fried bannock was brought into my life. Let me just say that it was a life-altering experience.

At least in years past, bannock was the staple food of the North and still

is in many places. When Jesus walked this Earth, he spoke in terms that were common to the people. He talked about fishing and farming, prodigal sons and kings and rulers. I think if Jesus would have come teaching in Thompson, he would speak about trapping, fishing, hockey and mining. He would speak to us in the terms that we know.

There was one message he gave about how he himself was the bread of life.

The people knew about a time when God gave them a bread from heaven. This bread sustained their lives

Largest privatesector investment in Manitoba history MLA Report kelly.bindle@leg.gov.mb.ca Kelly Bindle After attending a Brandon Chamber of Commerce stakeholders meeting during AgDays in Brandon this week, I was present at the Legislative Building in Winnipeg on Wednesday for an exciting announcement that ties in with our new government’s rebuilding of the Manitoba economy. Premier Brian Pallister and Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler made the announcement that Roquette, a France-based bio-food company, is making a $400-million investment in Manitoba through construction of a pea-processing facility in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie. The project will create about 350 jobs during its two-year design and construction phase and 150 permanent, well-paying jobs when the plant is up and running. This is the largest single private-sector investment in Manitoba’s history, and will be Roquette’s launching point for its product in North America.

To further rebuild our economy, our provincial government has been in consultations with the tourism industry to develop a strategy for improved promotion and investment and in December, the Department of Growth, Enterprise and Trade approved a Manitoba Star Attraction enhancement grant of $17,639 for the Thompson Spirit Way to replace and upgrade display panels along the Millennium Trail.

Separately, I want to thank Chief Ted Bland and band councillors Louisa Constant, Leroy Constant and Frank Wastesicoot from York Factory First Nation for braving bitterly cold weather last week and travelling to Thompson to meet with me to discuss issues affecting their community. It was an insightful discussion regarding York Factory’s history, current situation and potential regarding sustainable development.

It was also my pleasure last week to congratulate Laura Brass, Justin Mallet, Vincent Meredith, Daniel Stevens, Darryl Moose, Corey Munroe and Darien Munroe-Massan for their hard work and dedication in completing the 50-week Youth Build Program with the Thompson Boys and Girls Club. I wish them all the best in their current and future job placements.

Our new government continues to work in partnership with Manitobans, so we can make our province better together.

If Jesus came to Thompson, he would tell us that he is the bannock of life.

Just as the food we eat

gives us strength for every day, we need spiritual food even more so.

Our physical lives are upheld by the lives of other plants and animals. Our spiritual life must also be upheld by someone who has life within him. The

Bible teaches that God had no beginning. He is the only person whose life did not start. The very nature of God is beyond what our minds can understand.

God, having no beginning, is the only one who is the source of his own life. God needs nothing to sustain his life for He Himself is life.

Jesus told the people of Jerusalem to believe his words and they would have eternal life. Jesus said he is the bread of life, replacing the bread that their forefathers ate. To Thompson, Jesus is the bannock of life.

He has true eternal life in

himself and he offers it freely to everyone.

After this message, many stopped following Jesus. Jesus said to his disciples, “Do you want to go away too? ” Peter replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go, you have the words of eternal life?” I have no need to turn to the many vices in this city, because I can say together with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall I go, you have the words of eternal life?”

Northern Social Work Program The University of Manitoba, Faculty of Social Work at Thompson is now accepting applications for the Northern Social Work Program. The deadline for submitting applications is March 1, 2017. The program is scheduled to begin September 2017.

Students may complete the Northern Social Work Program as a fulltime or part-time student.

The program provides post-secondary education for Residents of Northern Manitoba, in particular those who have not had the opportunity due to economic and cultural reasons, lack of formal education, linguistic barriers or residence in remote areas.

Relocation to Thompson will be required.

Individuals can apply either under ACCESS or EXTERNAL categories. The ACCESS category is for mature students, 21 years or over, who have under 30 credit hours of university level courses. The EXTERNAL category is for regular students who have 30 credit hours or more of university level courses and are in good academic standing. For both categories, applicants must have resided in Northern Manitoba for 6 months or more prior to the application deadline or have been a long term resident of the North.

OBITUARY DEBORAH LYNN LAMB

Long overdue recognition of extremely rare curling feat

Deborah Lynn Lamb (Squires) born on September 12, 1961 in Tisdale Saskatchewan . Debbie suddenly and peacefully passed away at the age of 55 on January 11, 2017 at the Thompson General Hospital.

Debbie and her family moved to Thompson when she was 3 months old and she resided in Thompson her whole life. Debbie married the love of her life Jim on March 31, 1990 when they united in marriage Debbie had 3 children Dennis, David and Ryan, Jim had 2 children Chris and Mike they became a big happy family.

Debbie was all about family. She loved spending her time with the family attending many family gatherings, family reunions, traveling with her children and parents on many vacations, camping trips and winter holidays. Debbie had a very enthusiastic passion for life and many hobbies. Her biggest passion was sewing for her grandchildren, turning into Debbie’s Homemade Baby Creations which funded many dream vacations along with many visits to her children and grandchildren.

Debbie had a huge heart and was always wanting to help others.

She was known to walk up to anybody and offer a hug, including strangers and would quickly become their friend. She will always be remembered for her trait to love others. Debbie had a heart of gold.

If you needed a friend she was there with open arms and loving support. Debbie started her career with D&D Cable in 1989 which is now Shaw. Her need to help others made her successful in her position as a customer care representative. Debbie’s 5 Children and 13 Grandchildren were the light of her life. It didn’t matter what type of day she was having, when one of them walked through the door or called, the smile of her face said it all. Words can never express how important each and every one of them were to her and her last words were always I Love You. Debbie leaves her loved ones behind to mourn and cherish her life and special memories. Her father, Henry Squires and mother BilliJean Squires (Twyver), loving and devoted husband Jim; children Dennis (Janet) children Riley, Kiara, Haley, Mikey and Regan, David (Loralee) children Keena & Easton, Ryan (Brittany) children Sarah and ?, Chris (Katy) children Austin and Jaxon, Mike (Lorraine) children Roselyn, Ainsley and Cora, her brothers Chuck (Heather) children Vincent, Ashley and Eric, Kenneth and Herman, her sister Janet (Frank) children Samantha and Kristen along with many numerous relatives and close friends.

A memorial service is being held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hall located on corner of Juniper Drive and Cree Road from 1:00 – 5:00 with Roy Bladen of the Salvation Army of¿ciating at 1:00 pm, luncheon to follow. Please come and celebrate Debbie; a time for remembering and sharing all of her memories.

My Take on Snow Lake mjaxon@gillamnet.com Last January, a “Blue Moon” event took place at the Gordon M. Rupp Curling Rink. It was a curling end that everyone who has ever strapped on a slider has dreamed of … an eight-ender. It happened in the third end of a game played on sheet two, during a draw on the night of Jan. 18, 2016. It was scored by the team of skip Dennis Chrapun, third Laura Bilcowski, second Shelley Chrapun and lead Derek Chrapun against the foursome of René Gagnon, Paul Plamondon, Jennifer Plamondon and Cathy Plamondon.

Although every curler dreams of scoring an eight-ender, you won’t find many who are overly intrigued with having one scored against them.

However, their opposition that night was almost as excited as the Chrapun rink. Opposing skip René Gagnon proudly posted a picture of the anomaly on Facebook after the game.

It should be noted that all four members of this team were new members to the Snow Lake Curling Club, and the Plamondons were all new to the game!

For those unaware, an eight-ender, sometimes referred to as a “snowman,” is a perfect score within a single end of curling. In a curling end, both sides throw eight rocks, and an eight-ender is registered when all eight rocks from one team score points.

In a game where the goal is to remove opposition stones that are counting points and in turn score with your own, eightenders are extremely rare and equivalent to a perfect game in baseball or bowling. Eight-enders are so rare that the Manitoba Curling Association has an eight-ender award to recognize any such end scored in the province.

That recognition finally came about on the night of Dec. 12, when Snow Lake Curling Club president Terry Hornyak presented

They also received the Manitoba Curling Association (MCA) award of eightender crests. “The presentation was long overdue, as the paperwork submitted to the MCA was misplaced and the curling season at the Snow Lake Curling Club was delayed due to a leaking roof,” said the club’s Suzanne Kluke.

This was the fourth-ever eight-ender scored at the Snow Lake Curling Club.

Also of note, last year, René Gagnon was the man responsible for securing a Ryan Fry jacket signed by his entire Jacobs Olympic gold medallist team, which the club raffled off in its first yearly raffle. “Tickets are now available for this year’s raffle, first prize $500 Asham gift card, second prize a Patrik Laine Jets jersey valued at $229,” said Kluke. “This draw will take place at the resurrected men’s bonspiel Feb.

18.” After several years hosting only the ladies’ and a mixed bonspiel, the club has announced they will host a men’s bonspiel from Feb. 17-19.

Another community occasion was marked in past weeks. It happened New Year’s Day with the Grand Reopening of Honker’s Hill.

Honker’s Hill is a local sliding hill that was constructed in 1998/99 by the Snow Lake Lions’ Club. It was named after Lion Al Saskowski. Saskowski, who passed in 2000, was a committed and well-known volunteer and a charter member of the local Lions’ Club. He was affectionately known as “Honker.” The hill is a long, steep and straight marvel that sits on Snow Lake’s access road … an easy walk, with sleigh in tow, from any area of the community. Of late, it had become unkempt and snowmobiles had taken to riding it rather than the children it was originally intended for.

A local man, Andrew Smith, who is just new

to the community, felt it was a wonderful asset with unfulfilled promise.

He and a co-worker, Blair McLaughlin, took it upon themselves to organize a revitalization of the hill.

With money from the Town of Snow Lake, work donated by themselves and others, as well as equipment and workers provided free of charge by Strilkiwski Contracting, they revitalized the area, fenced it off from snowmobiles, and put up proper signage.

On Sunday, Jan. 1, their hard work was rewarded by squeals of laughter and smiles on children’s faces.

In addition to one of the biggest sliding parties the town has witnessed, there were hot dogs and hot chocolate for all and the Snow Lake Volunteer Fire Department put on an amazing fireworks display at day’s end. “It truly has become a fun winter place for kids of all ages,” said Fran Saskowski of her late husband’s namesake.

MKO Client Navigator provide assistance to eligible First Nations and Inuit Clients who are experiencing difficulties accessing the Non-Insured Health Benefit Program and related provincial programs and services. MKO Client Navigator also support First Nation and Inuit Clients and communities in gaining a better understanding of the NIHB Program, existing health services, and jurisdictions. They also gather, collate and exchange information on health access issues and identify ways of improving health services for First Nation and Inuit Clients.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide the necessary research; develop and/or establish an information base that is required for the preparation of documents for the program.

• Provide presentations on NIHB Programs to MKO First Nation communities.

• Be a liaison worker between MKO First Nation members and First Nation and Inuit Health Branch.

• Prepare reports, briefing notes, and establish database (statistic reports).

• Working in cooperation with other MKO programs and staff.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: • Post-Secondary education in health field or equivalent education and experience would be considered.

• Must have proven well-developed verbal and written communication skills, staff/public relations, must be highly self-motivated and able to work well independently or as a team member.

• Must be innovative and decisive with high-level organizational and analytical skills.

• Must demonstrate the ability to work with a high level of tact and discretion.
