Thompson city council highlighted the career of Master Cpl. Brent Thompson, who currently serves with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers out of Winnipeg, during their Dec. 10 meeting. This presentation came roughly a month after a Remembrance Day ceremony that marked 100 years since the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. “In 2000, Brent joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he works to this day,” said Coun. Jeff Fountain. “He has served on operations Athena and Impact and his duties have taken him from the icy cold of Alert to the sand deserts of Kuwait.” Fountain also mentioned that Thompson has cultivated a number of hobbies outside of the armed forces. “Brent was born and raised in Thompson and returns just about every summer to visit family, take in some fishing and eat some moose meat,” he said. “Mr. Thompson is a proud judo black belt and has won many judo titles throughout Canada.” Recently, Thompson had the honour of carrying the Canadian Armed Forces Eagle Staff at Mons and Vimy during the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day in France. The Eagle Staff is a travelling symbol of unity amongst Indigenous service people, Fountain said. Mayor Colleen Smook presented a certificate of appreciation to Thompson, calling him a good representative for “all those who have served in our community and elsewhere, for their sacrifice in protecting our nation.” Thompson wasn’t able to receive his certificate in person so his sister Julyda Katchmar accepted it on his behalf.
