Daniel Gervais; man can he play… My Take on Snow Lake mjaxon@gillamnet.com
Marc Jackson There is something about the sound of a fiddle that appeals to most people… but there is something about the sound of a fiddle, played well, that appeals to everyone! That was certainly the case when St. Paul, Alberta’s Daniel Gervais took to the stage at the Snow Lake Motor Inn on the evening of Sunday, April 9th. Gervais and accompanying guitar player Clinton Pelletier kicked off their first set by stating, “If anyone has any requests, by all means… keep them to yourself.” Obviously joking, Gervais went to the audience of 40 or so locals for suggestions numerous times this night, but in this instance the reply was, “The Devil went down to Georgia” and the players quickly obliged. With six albums to his credit, there was no shortage of original music to put forward; however, Gervais and Pelletier also stirred up the crowd with outstanding renderings of ‘Orange Blossom Special’, ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’, ‘Red River Jig’, ‘Manitoba Song’, ‘Maple Sugar’, ‘If You’re Gonna Play in Texas’, ‘Tennessee Waltz’ and ‘St. Anne Song’. Prior to introducing the latter, Gervais appeared impressed that Stompin’ Tom had in fact played on the very stage he was set up on this night. Daniel Gervais has been playing the violin since
the age of five. He plays a variety of fiddle styles and classical violin. He holds a Master of Music degree in classical violin at the University of Alberta and in addition to performing at the 2012 London Olympics as a cultural ambassador of Alberta, he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He is also the first and only Albertan to win the Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Competition, competing in the Canadian Grand Masters in 2003 and returned to the competition in 2004 and 2008, finishing in the top eleven both times. He currently teaches as a member of the sessional faculty at Edmonton’s MacEwan University in the jazz and popular music program. Clinton Pelletier is originally from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, but now resides in Edmonton. He plays ‘Finger style guitar’ and those fingers are nothing short of magic. With Gervais playing fiddle beside him, most were hard pressed to determine which of the gents was playing what… they are both that quick. The two first met in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan at a fiddle camp and have collaborated regularly since. Of note, Pelletier’s father Freddie has worked with Gene Watson, Ferlin Husky, Red Sovine, and toured with Ian Tyson. Throughout their two, one hour sets, both men amused the audience with

Gervais called Gypsy Jazz. They also pulled out and dusted off a Canadian inspired version of Waltzing Matilda, called ‘Hunting My Nita’, and Gervais’ own ‘In Tall Buildings’ was worth
the price of admission on its own. This show was the final one of the current ‘Home Routes’ series. As with the past five, the Daniel Gervais show was a winner.
