urom the small village of Anafonitria on the Greek island of Zakynthos is a platform that peers down upon one of Greece’s most historical treasures — Navagio Beach. This ultra-remote location is refuge to the wreckage of Panagiotis — a smuggler ship that ran aground the shallow bay after being pursued by Greek authorities on a stormy night in 1983. The ship was carrying a load of contraband cigarettes, women and alcohol. The shipwreck remains today in the destitute cove, held captive in the white Grecian sands, surrounded by limestone cliffs and water that is so brilliantly turquoise it is worth the trip in itself to see. Navagio is the country’s most enchanting beach, luring thousands of visitors from around the world yearly to its seductive shores. Accessible only by boat, visitors may experience the startling feeling of being stranded, until they are whisked away by boat, leaving the Panagiotis in its solidarity once more.

When the Panagiotis wrecked in 1983 the beach was renamed Navagio (Greek: Ναυάγιο), translating to Shipwreck. Shipwreck Beach is commonly called Smugglers Cove by locals in tribute of the ship’s colourful legacy.

airobi, Kenya - warmly nicknamed Green City in the Sun by locals – has a tremendous number of attractions that draw tourists from around the world yearly. This cosmopolitan hub offers a contemporary twist on Africa, with many of the modern comforts new age travellers are accustomed to. If you’re like me, dreams of Africa take place on rustic terrain with overgrown trees, wildlife and African culture. Set me outside the bustle of Kenyan city life and let me taste the more traditional side of Nairobi – of course, with a plush bed at the end of the day to sleep off the sore feet of adventure.

es, in Nairobi you can have traditional and luxury, all it takes is a quick 20 kilometre jaunt out of the city, where, nestled in the more authentic African countryside, is a wondrous vacation destination called Giraffe Manor. Set on a pristine 12 acres of land, which is tucked away in a much larger 140 acres of giraffe sanctuary, is the manor, which was built in 1932 and has been declared one of Nairobi’s most historical buildings. While Jock and Betty are no longer at the manor, it remains home to a heard of 8 Rothschild giraffes. They are first to arrive for breakfast and dinner time – and there is no denying these beautiful animals a bite of your scrumptious meals, they’ll poke their heads right in the windows and eat out of your hand. The manor boasts 10 luxury suites, and the property has a maximum accommodation of 25 guests, creating a truly intimate and memorable experience.

arl Lagerfeld was born on September 10 1933, in Hamburg, Germany. Many have argued his birthdate though; Karl insists that he was born in 1938 making him younger than he actually is. This is one of the many traits about the acclaimed designer that gives him an air of mystery that intrigues many. Being born in Germany at a time of political upheaval, his family moved to a rural part of Northern Germany where he was brought up far from the reaches of the ruling Nazis. He attended private school as a young boy and at the age of fourteen he moved to Paris to attend secondary school, where he majored in design and drawing. His realization for his love of design came at a young age and with the move to Paris, his career was able to take off. In 1954, Lagerfeld entered a design competition where he won the Woolmark Prize for his design and creation of a coat. The designer Pierre Balmain recognized the young designer’s talent and hired him as his assistant. Three years later, Karl began to leave his fashionable mark on the fashion industry designing for many fashion houses, beginning with Maison Jean Patou where he was appointed artistic director in 1957. At Maison Jean Patou, Lagerfeld designed the Haute Couture collections for the next five years, although his designs were ill received. Karl decided to leave Paris and take some time away from design, looking for inspiration from the elite and fashionable crowd he was surrounded by. For the next two years he studied life, spending much of his time on the beaches of Europe.

hen he returned to fashion, he began working for multiple fashion houses in some of the fashion capitals of the world. Karl began working at Chloe in Paris and Ticiani, in Rome, where he worked with founder Evan Richards. As he continued working freelance for Chloe, he also began designing for the major Italian fashion house Fendi. At Fendi, Karl began by creating the fur collections; eventually expanding to the label’s ready-to-wear collection and to this day is still head designer for the celebrated fashion house.

A

lthough Lagerfeld is known for his designs at many fashion houses over the years, he is most well known for his work at Chanel. In 1983, Karl began working at the French fashion house, which had been started by Coco Chanel and was in decline until Karl rescued it and put new life into it. He brought the brand back to life with a revamped popular ready to wear line.

His designs, whether for Chanel or Fendi, are constant reinventions, mixing his own personal style with the classic fashion house identity. He has brought his own style to many houses and even has his own label, which he launched in 1984. His reputation for craftsmanship and quality tailoring can be found in his namesake label as well as his other lines.

From designing opera costumes, to photography and directing, he has also has worked on many interior design projects around the world. orn in 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Grace Kelly was raised by an Olympic gold medal winning father, John and her mother, Margaret who was the first woman to coach a female athletics team at an institution. Just like her parents, Grace accepted challenges and was born with determination and drive, which led to her embarking on her adventurous acting career at the young age of twenty during the golden age of television and film. Accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1947 at age 18, Kelly supported herself by modeling in New York with a mentality of wanting no financial backing from her family. Appearing first in New York City theatrical productions as well as live drama, it was not until her role in Mogambo which won her an Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe Award in 1954 that Kelly had received the spotlight stardom that was truly deserved. Appearing in 11 films within three and a half years, Kelly was one of the most admired talents and sought-after movie stars in Hollywood, and perhaps the world.

fter starring in 29 films, Kelly might have been only 26, but had become the highest paid and most respected actress in the world at the time. Her glamorous career would come to an end after meeting Europe’s most eligible bachelor, Price Rainier III while in Monaco filming Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief with co-star Cary Grant in 1955. Rainier became the 31st ruler of Monaco in 1949 and once he found his Princess, he proposed. Leaving her legacy behind, Kelly went on to marry the Prince of Monaco and become Her Serene Highness Princess Grace in 1956. Kelly arrived on Prince Rainier’s yacht into the harbour of Monaco where thousands waited in excitement for her arrival. A year later in 1957, their first child, Caroline was born and just fifteen months later they were blessed with another child, this time a son called Albert. Completing their family, the last child, Stéphanie, was born in 1965.

ince Kelly was no longer acting, she took part in philanthropic work and founded numerous organizations such as: AMADE Mondiale, a Monacobased non-profit organization protecting and promoting the moral and physical integrity and well-being of children throughout the world and the Princess Grace Foundation which supports local artisans in Monaco. In 1982, tragedy struck when Grace Kelly suffered a stroke and lost control of her automobile, causing her to crash off the steep cliffs of the Côte d’Azur region of southern France. Her daughter, Stéphanie, who was also in the car, survived the accident but Kelly passed at a young age of 52, leaving Monaco weeping with sorrow for their beloved Princess. Rainier never remarried after his loss and was buried alongside Kelly in 2005. This is the tale of a famous American movie star, a woman of grace and beauty, who fell in love with a prince, and gave up her Hollywood lifestyle to live happily ever after.

ased in Penang, and of Lithuanian descent, Ernest Zacharevic is no ordinary street artist. His work bridges genres, generations and cultures. Using found objects and everyday people, Ernest has created hundreds of urban street art works, primarily in Malaysia. With a growing interest in his immense talent, Zacharevic’s work has started to pop up in North America, specifically in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Hawaii. Recently, Zacharevic has been asked to come to Canada and create street art walls. NICHE will keep you posted. An intelligent blend of fine art, graffiti and portraiture, Zacharevic’s larger than life street art walls evoke emotion and interaction. He is truly an artist who understands how to interact with the urban landscape and still pay homage to the discards of a culture, and the people that walk the streets each day.

NICHE magazine tracked down Ernest Zacharevic in Penang a few months ago, and talked with him about his art, background and what inspires him. This is what he had to say‌

: Do you have formal training as an artist?

E.Z. : Yes, I attended a National Arts school in Lithuania where I received a strict Classical education. I then continued my studies at University in London. Although very inspired by the graffiti scene in Lithuania, it wasn’t until I became immersed in the culture of East London that I really starting producing art on the street.

: How long have you been producing street art?

E.Z.: I’ve been painting full time for about 5 years. My first big outdoor project was the George Town Arts and Culture Festival in Penang where I am now permanently based. I was commissioned to produce 6 walls over 3 months; the project was a great success. Since then I’ve been very lucky to travel and paint walls worldwide.

: What was your inspiration for creating artwork that is three dimensional, interactive and incorporates found objects?

E.Z.: I want to produce works that form part of the urban landscape and its community, it’s not just about putting paint on a wall.

: Do you work in other art mediums besides oversized outdoor street art?

E.Z.: I have always created work for the gallery and the street. Both environments have seen illustrations, paintings, installations and sculptures. My works isn’t regulated by a specific style or medium and I wouldn’t want to be restricted by one. The street work is perhaps a little more spontaneous, as a rarely know what I’m going to do before I see the wall, whatever I create is made in an effort to engage organically with the urban landscape, not stand out as a ‘work of art’. 64

: How many street art pieces have you created to date?

E.Z.: Probably in the hundreds now. Some last just one day, and others years. Seriously the only way I find out is through hashtags on Instagram.

: Do you have a favourite work of art from your own collections?

E.Z.: Not from my own work, I try not to get too emotionally attached to anything I am working on. I don’t like to be restricted in my work whether that is by my own emotions, techniques or methods of working.

: Using your Georgetown 2012 art of the two children on the bicycle as an example, how long does a piece of this scale take to create, from start to finish?

E.Z.: I spent a lot of time thinking about concepts and how it is going to come together visually. The execution depends on so many different things and I’m a lot faster now than I was when that piece was created. A piece will generally take about a week.

magazine first stumbled upon the works of Canadian born artist/photographer Heidi Bassett Blair in the Cayman Islands. Her most recent exhibition, Plastic in Paradise, was on display at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. The colours, the moods, the Canadian play on the season — it’s the perfect addition to our annual summer issue. Plastic in Paradise is Heidi Bassett Blair’s response to her moments as a youth, and moments as an adult. They are creations of what has either happened, or the representation of a previous experience. Some of the scenes

are completely candid. Others are staged based on a moment that has passed, or the creation of a scene based on the characteristics of the subjects Bassett Blair is photographing, places she has travelled to, or references to art history and popular culture. Truth and fiction are woven together to create a narrative of both a real and imagined world. Helium balloons compete with coconut palms; a beautiful landscape and a plastic blow up pool toy intersect nature with the factory-made. Through these personal stories, the artist highlights the duality of the plastic and the paradise, and by doing so draws our attention to the complex relationship between the two.

Heidi was born in Toronto and attended McGill University and New York University. During this era her most influential experiences included studying abroad in Paris at Parsons School of Design, spending countless hours in the darkroom, working as a teaching assistant for video-digital artist Peter Campus, and photographing Yosef Karsh in Ottawa. Since then, her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and Canada. Bassett Blair currently lives in the Cayman Islands with her husband and three children.

arlier this year, I received an invite from Tourism Kelowna to attend the Gold Medal Plates Canadian Culinary Championship. I love to cover foodie events that have a travel component, and jumped at the chance to witness the culinary brilliance of up-and-coming chefs from across Canada. As luck would have it, this foodie focused trip turned into an eye opening experience for me, and a discovery of the City of Kelowna and what it has to offer those who often travel for the love of gastronomy. Gold Medal Plates is touted as being the ultimate celebration of Canadian excellence in cuisine, wine, the arts and athletic achievement. The Canadian Culinary Championship takes place in Kelowna, BC and is a series of grueling cooking tests, designed to showcase brilliance in Canada’s culinary industry.

ach of the 11 finalists is already a regional champion, and many are well known in the culinary world. It is a marvel to behold; chefs and their teams skillfully (albeit frantically) executing, and packed rooms of onlookers watching with palpable excitement. The competition consists of three rounds: a wine matching contest where the chef must create a dish that perfectly pairs with an unnamed wine, a black box challenge for which the chef must create an elegant dish using six of the ten mystery box ingredients, and finally the grand finale where each chef prepares their signature dish with a chosen wine pairing for more than 600 guests, including the expert judging panel who determine the medalists. From the first event, Chef O’Flynn was my favourite amongst the competing chefs and I was happy when he took home the gold.

W

ith the championship over and the good china put away, I swapped slingbacks for sneakers and hit the streets in search of Kelowna’s true culinary heartbeat. Beyond the expert chefs that had taken over the city, there was a thriving local food culture in this community and it made my travel adventures here all the more rewarding and memorable. Kelowna is the gateway to the Okanagan, and is a city surrounded by mountains, lakes, orchards and vineyards. Although we all know the wine scene has received a lot of press in recent years, the food culture has been largely overlooked, and I am not sure why. For a city that sits right on Okanagan Lake, and sports a beach on its main street, this is a traveller’s wonderland that offers an abundance of British Columbian bliss and beauty.

Wandering through the quaint streets and peeking inside charming shops in the downtown core, Kelowna felt more like a friendly small town than the largest city in the Okanagan Valley. The waterfront is rambling and leisurely and the lake that hugs the city is sparkling and bright. I cannot tell you how many unique little eateries, food shops, specialty boutiques and restaurants I came across in my street travels. They seemed to be everywhere, and on every corner. My favourite was The Salted Brick on Bernard Avenue. Inside, the dĂŠcor is rustic and modest, with wooden bench seating and an open kitchen. Chef/Owner Jason Leizart was our host and served up an impressive charcuterie board with handcrafted local cheeses and house cured meats.

You will want to stay at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort. It is a stunning modern hotel — the largest in Kelowna — located on Okanagan Lake. There is a business centre, pools and hot tub, plus in-hotel dining and a casino on site. The parkland location is really beautiful and the guest villa we stayed in was truly over the top — amazing!

Make sure you try the blood sausage from Illichmann’s on Gordon Drive. This fourth generation German delicatessen is doing amazing things with meats and sausages, and their selection of gourmet food products would be impressive in a large urban city, never mind nestled in the Okanagan Valley.

Stop by Codfathers Seafood Market on Gordon Drive and say hello to owners Jon and AnneMarie Crofts, two of the most passionate and knowledgeable fishmongers I have ever met. Almost every chef competing at Gold Medal Plates had seafood products from Codfathers, and for good reason. The freshness, unique selection and supreme quality are second to none.

Take a tour of The Beer Institute on Richter Street, owned and operated by Tree Brewing. The facility is beautifully West Coast inspired in design, with a rustic tasting room, charming Hop Garden and bustling eatery. The ‘beer factory’ is a revelation in forward thinking brewing techniques. With a craft brewery on site, don’t you dare leave without trying the flight of four Tree Beers.

K

elowna is a vacation city worthy of year round travel. In the summer months, orchard fruit picking and wine tasting will be on the top of the ‘do to’ list. In winter, skiing (Big White is not far away) and outdoor adventure awaits. The great thing about culinary travel to Kelowna is that excellence will be waiting for you, no matter what time of year you visit.
