What is summer for if not embracing moments of joy and lightness?

We asked our Managing Director, Anne Zimmermann, to share her favorite destinations, the best spots to see and be seen, and the beauty essentials that fit into any cabin bag and suit every getaway.

What travel destinations are on the horizon this year?

I am firmly convinced that there’s nothing a day (or two) of sun can’t fix. Having said that, every year around March, when winter feels endless, I escape to the Maldives, a tradition that helps me bridge the gap until spring finally arrives. It is my time to recharge and reconnect. In summer, you will find me in St. Tropez, my second home, where I cherish the comfort of familiar faces and places. I also love short weekend trips to London and other European cities that add a touch of culture to my everyday life.

If you had to describe a perfect holiday destination in five words, which ones would you use?

Sun. Fun. Culture. Adventure. Memories.

With that in mind – what does a perfect day look like?

There’s no perfect day without good sleep! After that, I’ll get some exercise, read a book (I’m currently obsessed with Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo), and enjoy a long lunch with friends. Ideally, somewhere great for people-watching, with a glass of rosé in hand. This is

usually followed by a trip to the city for some window shopping, and then wrapped up with a candlelit dinner (and dancing if I feel extra adventurous).

How does your beauty routine change when you’re on holiday?

Summer is all about hydration, both inside and out. Besides the essential SPF (I love Augustinus Bader’s formula or Auteur’s Definitive Sun Drops because they mix so easily into my moisturizer), I also use MUTHA’s Body Butter Glow to nourish my skin after a day at the beach. What are you packing for the trip?

La Guérite in Cannes – perfect for a hedonistic lunch on the beach, complete with plenty of celebrity sightings. Kinugawa is another favorite; it feels like a magical garden and is my first choice for a light Japanese dinner.

Summer, sun, and the holiday season are upon us! We asked our favorite beauty experts to share their travel plans, the products they’ll be packing, and the little things that instantly put them in a vacation mood.

RELAXING AT THE BEACH

Where are you going?

I’ll be on the global tour for Jurassic World Rebirth! Hopefully, as soon as it’s released, I’ll be sleeping on some beach – without dinosaurs (laughs).

What beauty products are you packing for the trip?

Tell us, where are you traveling this summer?

Honestly, it’s not so much about the destination as it is about the experience and what there is to discover! But if I had to pick one place, Harbour Island in the Bahamas would be at the top of my list.

That sounds like a dream! What are your absolute travel essentials?

How has your fitness routine evolved over the years?

I take a much more relaxed approach now. I wake up with the sun and like to start my day with some movement – sometimes Zach Bush’s 4-minute workout or a bit of yoga. The key for me is being outside in nature in the morning.

Lastly, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Cherish the simplicity of childhood – bike rides with the neighbors, swimming after school, carefree days with your siblings. There were times when I didn’t feel good enough, but life has taught me that confidence is invaluable. It’s not just a reward for courage, it makes you truly magnetic.

How do you see the future of beauty in terms of technological innovation and artificial intelligence?

The beauty industry is increasingly shaped by technologies like AI. Many consumers that come to our clinic in Zurich feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of products and struggle with how to use them correctly. AI offers personalized guidance on a large scale –something we’ve already implemented with Liv AI. Think of it as a personal fitness coach, but for skincare. Impressive, right?

Absolutely! How is AI already influencing the development of cosmetic treatments?

Unfortunately, AI has had little impact in this area so far, which is why we developed Liv AI, a chatbot designed to change that.

Which tech innovations show the most promise for treating skin concerns like acne, pigmentation, or wrinkles?

NASA has used LED light for skin treatments, and LED masks are showing great potential. They stimulate collagen production and help with acne. However, they should be seen as complementary tools rather than replacements for a solid skincare routine.

How crucial is collaboration between medicine, technology, and the beauty industry?

It’s essential! Dermatological ingredients are making their way into cosmetics, though often in lower concentrations. Retinol is a great

example – it’s used in medicine to treat acne and in cosmetics to combat wrinkles.

Which Niche Beauty tech products do you find particularly innovative, and why?

I’m a big fan of Therabody massage devices. If you sit a lot, they’re a game-changer – and much more affordable than weekly massages (laughs).

What’s your take on at-home beauty tools?

I find tools like LED masks or at-home laser hair removal devices fascinating – as long as they’re certified and used correctly.

Which medical trends could significantly impact the beauty industry in the coming years?

Longevity is a major trend. It goes beyond diet and exercise, incorporating epigenetic factors that will soon influence skincare. My previous research on cell reprogramming laid the groundwork for future developments. Once these technologies become established in medicine, they’ll inevitably make their way into beauty.

absorption, and the effects often show weeks later: hair becomes more prone to breakage and grows back weaker.

How can we protect our hair?

Always rinse out chlorine and saltwater thoroughly, and nourishing masks and conditioners are essential. Gstaad in winter, the Amalfi Coast in summer – Dr. Barbara Sturm and her daughter Charly share their travel plans for the year and the products that can’t be missing in their suitcases.

Many people are already planning their yearly vacations. Do you know where you’re headed in 2025?

Dr. Barbara Sturm: We’re celebrating my father’s 80th birthday with a trip to his favorite places, starting with the Amalfi Coast, then a few days in the mountains, and finally, St. Barths in October.

Charly Sturm: Of course, I’ll be part of it all! Aside from that, Morocco and Bodrum are at the top of my list this year. In the

summer, I also love taking short trips to Italy – the food there is just unbeatable.

Are you team mountains or sea?

Dr. Barbara Sturm: I love the mountains. For me, Gstaad is the perfect place, both in winter and summer. I can swim, forage for mushrooms, ski, and hike. It has everything I need to truly unwind.

Charly Sturm: That’s a tough one! The mountains definitely have their charm, especially in summer when nature is breathtaking and the heat is not overwhelming. I love the spectacular views, exploring rivers and lakes, and being surrounded by complete tranquility.

Can you share your fondest childhood holiday memories?

Dr. Barbara Sturm: I remember so many family trips – camping in the woods, surrounded by pine trees and the coastline. And skiing with my mother, who always had chocolate on hand whenever we felt cold or hungry.

Charly Sturm: I have especially fond memories of our time in Austria. I learned to ski in Zürs, and to this day, it remains one of my favorite places for its unique atmosphere and incredible food.

Which three things do you always bring on long trips?

Dr. Barbara Sturm: A hot water bottle! Airplane cabins are often chilly. I also always carry letters and postcards from my daughters – they’re among my most treasured possessions. 1. TIMING IS EVERYTHING

If you apply sunscreen once you’re already in the sun, up to 50% of it can evaporate before it has the chance to bond with the skin, making it significantly less effective. Always apply sunscreen to cool, clean, and dry skin in the shade (ideally indoors) 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. And needless to say, avoid the midday sun whenever possible!

2. THE SPF FACTOR

Experts agree: if you’re spending extended time at the beach or pool – where reflective water intensifies UV exposure – look for these three key features on the label: broad spectrum, water-resistant, and SPF 30 or higher. Interestingly, SPF 50 offers only a slightly better UV protection than SPF 30, blocking 98% of UV rays compared to SPF 30’s 96.7%.

4. THE RIGHT AMOUNT MATTERS

More is more when it comes to SPF! A good rule of thumb: two finger lengths of sunscreen for your face, ears, and neck. Wearing a bikini? You’ll need about a shot glass full for your body. If you’re using a spray sunscreen, dermatologists recommend applying a base layer of SPF lotion first.

5. DON’T FORGET!

The most overlooked spots? Ears, neck, and hairline – but the truth is that they need just as much protection as the rest of your exposed skin. The solution?

A hat, cap, or scarf is a must; your scalp will thank you. And let's be honest, a little extra style never hurt a beach look.

3. T FOR TEXTURE

Your sunscreen’s texture should match your skin’s needs. Dry, sensitive skin? Opt for a hydrating, creamy formula. Oily or combination skin? A gel-based SPF or lightweight lotion will do the trick.

6. LET’S COOL DOWN

After-sun care is just as important as sun protection. Hydrating your skin after a long day in the sun is non-negotiable. Enter the superstar of after-sun lotions: Aloe vera, known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Look for moisture-binding ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, plus antioxidants like vitamin C or carotenoids to keep your summer skin happy and healthy.

You launched a new SPF 50+ formula for the body. How does it differ from other products on the market?

It contains a modern combination of various broad-spectrum filters that provide exceptionally high UVB and UVA protection. This means that it meets (and exceeds!) the most important requirements for effective sun protection. It not only protects the skin from sunburn, which can lead to skin cancer, but also from the collagen-destroying effects of UV light, which cause premature skin aging.

What are the most common mistakes people make when it comes to sunscreen?

First, not using enough sunscreen. Second, not reapplying it after water exposure – even when the product is labeled as water-resistant.

How has sun protection research evolved in recent years, and what innovations do you expect in the future?

Research has shown that skin cancer is caused not only by UVB rays but also by UVA rays. In the past, UVA rays were considered primarily cosmetic concerns because they break down collagen and accelerate skin aging. Today, a high level of UVA protection is essential. In the future, we may see more natural substances (so-called biomimetics) incorporated into sun protection products, as plants have developed highly effective UV-protective compounds.

How does the skin on the face differ from the body in terms of SPF needs?

Body skin is often not pre-tanned and is therefore more sensitive. However, facial sunscreens tend to be more complex, as they need to work harmoniously with sebum production while providing a good base for makeup.

Is sun-related skin damage irreversible?

Mild-to-moderate sun damage can be significantly improved with a consistent and long-term treatment using vitamin A. Severe sun damage, however, is often irreversible and may even require surgical intervention.

DAY 1: WELCOME TO THE SPA

This family-run hotel, with 170 years of history, blends Austrian tradition with minimalist modernity. The spa’s floor-to-ceiling windows and serene silence – just the rustling wind and birdsong – set the tone for deep relaxation. Everywhere we look, animals – goats, chickens, rabbits – are thriving. Proof? The goats have a wellness station in the barn that is intended for self-massage. Coolness factor? 10/10. These same goats provide the whey used in Susanne’s bath products. The farm relies solely on hay milk, richer in vitamins and fatty acids like omega-3 and linoleic acid, making it especially nourishing for the skin. The tour leaves our group in awe – Susanne’s brand has championed solar energy and green electricity for over 20 years. The standout? A solar-powered emulsion mixing unit that recycles excess energy. Heidi: What we know as “perfume” today was revolutionized here in Cologne. Definitely worth exploring, for example, at the Farina House!

Jenni: As the sunniest city in Germany, Cologne is perfect for sitting outside at cafés and enjoying a good aperitif.

If you could bottle a special moment, what would it be?

Heidi: The sense of smell captures emotions better than any other sense. But I wish we could also bottle sounds, colors, visual impressions, and conversations with new people in unfamiliar places. Translating these experiences into scents is exactly what we strive for with every creation.

Do you prefer exploring new destinations or the relaxation of returning to familiar places?

Heidi: Both! New places are often more inspiring, while familiar destinations bring more relaxation.

Jenni: This year, I want to discover new places and, in turn, new beauty trends. I love finding the coolest spas and must-have beauty products in different cities.

What destinations are on your bucket list?

Jenni: We’ve been talking a lot about South Korea and Japan lately – both are definitely at the top of our list.

What’s a must-have when you travel?

Jenni: I always have 4 | FOUR in my handbag! I never leave the house without it, and I always pack a 50ml bottle for my trips.

Heidi: SPF is a must on vacation! I also love bringing a new fragrance with me to associate those special memories with a scent forever.

Your personal beauty hack?

Jenni: I use vacations in the sun as a break from makeup. Just a great fragrance and good skincare, then straight to the beach!

Heidi: Always keep your skin hydrated while traveling, whether by train or plane, inside and out. Air conditioning can dry you out quickly!

What music puts you in a vacation mood?

Jenni: Anything by Harry Styles. I have it on repeat for the perfect holiday vibe.

Heidi: I’ve had SZA on repeat for months, whether at the office or on the go!

Your desert island product?

Heidi: A perfume and my Kindle! Jenni and I are both avid readers.

Jenni: True! With a great fragrance and a new fantasy novel, we’re set for a long time.

Always be Drowsy

Skip the fancy outfits and packed itinerary – the only real vacation essential? A restful night’s sleep.

First, a confession: as a solid mid-tier millennial, I spent most of my twenties building a fashion career and studying – and whatever time I wasn’t working or hitting the books, I was, of course, partying. I also spent a significant portion of that decade proudly declaring that I could function on three hours of sleep, wearing my exhaustion like a badge of honor as I stumbled from one rock ’n’ roll club to another, teetering in high heels.

As a punishment I got insomnia, an ironic twist that appeared, quite literally, overnight (pun intended) on an otherwise unremarkable summer evening. My default setting is sarcasm, but nothing could mask the sheer panic of lying wide awake, watching the hours –and then minutes – tick by until my alarm went off. It felt like the universe’s final betrayal. Desperate, I tried sleeping pills, which initially made me euphoric and then deeply paranoid (What if I’ll never be able to sleep normally again?). I dabbled in calming teas, Epsom salt baths (worked until… they didn’t), meditation, journaling, and exhausting myself with long runs. No luck. Then, one Christmas not too long ago, my sister took matters into her own hands, did some research, and gifted me a Drowsy silk sleep mask. My favorites are Dorian in Notting Hill for an amazing steak and Los Mochis near Notting Hill Gate for delicious gluten-free sushi. Yum! As for food trends, I can’t get enough of pistachios and milk chocolate –the perfect combo!

For nails, I recommend Oblique Studios. For skincare, The Galen Clinic is a must, especially their HydraFacial – it’s completely transformed my skin. And when it comes to hair, Limoz Hair is my go-to. The color I got there was hands down the best I’ve ever had!

For shopping, I highly recommend Pandora Dress Agency in Knightsbridge and Loop Generation in South Kensington – they’re my favorite spots for incredible vintage finds. If you’re looking for a cultural pit stop, the Serpentine Gallery is a mustsee, followed by lunch on the terrace at Kensington Roof Gardens.

Bella Italia, Bella Irene...

Irene, let’s start with a topic you’re very familiar with: Italy. How has your country shaped your view of beauty?

Despite being born in the UK, I’m 100% Italian. My family lives in Italy, and my products are made there. For me, beauty means authenticity and nature – a philosophy that defines Irene Forte Skincare.

Your family has turned Rocco Forte Hotels into a renowned brand. What makes these hotels special, and how do you define luxury?

The Rocco Forte Hotels embody my family’s values. My father shaped them with attention to detail, excellent service, and the uniqueness of each location. To me, luxury means creating personal experiences that make people feel valued. Which offerings are particularly important to you when it comes to enabling holistic well-being?

The Rocco Forte Hotels combine modern science with

traditional healing methods and focus on natural ingredients. Individual treatments like lava stone massages or inhalations with Sicilian lemon are in sync with the surroundings.

What inspired you to create your own skincare brand? At Rocco Forte Hotels, I saw the potential to merge nature with science. In 2014, I met Dottoressa Francesca Ferri, and together we developed a sustainable, vegan skincare line that is clinically tested, hypoallergenic, and B-Corp certified. Our packaging, made from 100% recycled materials, is inspired by Sicily, with ingredients like olive oil and prickly pear from our organic farm.

How do you, as an entrepreneur, find balance to counter stress?

Vedic meditation, barre, and pilates keep me balanced. On weekends, I relax with a magnesium bath and a pistachio face mask.

Was there a trip that changed your perspective on skincare?

A trip to the Vana Wellness Retreat in India taught me how important inner balance is for beauty. It deepened my understanding of Ayurveda and inspired me to incorporate holistic practices, especially the connection between gut health and skin.

Your travel tips for Italy?

In Sicily, Verdura Resort, Villa Igiea, and the Monreale Cathedral are a must. Torre Salsa Nature Reserve offers beautiful beaches, and wine lovers should visit Di Giovanna. Caltabellotta, where I’m an honorary citizen, is especially dear to me – it has amazing views and the Mates restaurant. In Florence, Hotel Savoy. The Irene restaurant (laughs) offers great culinary experiences, and Sostanza has legendary butter chicken. An espresso at Procacci, the Boboli Gardens, and Palazzo Pitti complete the experience.
