PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

How did I spend my week in Florida? It was beneficial having all the meetings and gatherings in Florida in the same location and time frame. It allowed me to share with other associations what NICA is doing and how NICA is involved with the Industry we represent. I was able to meet up with a lot of friends at the NICA Business Expo and Fare Foods Food Show. The event was jammed with Educational Sessions and Workshops, Roundtable Discussions, and more. We also had our Annual General Membership Meeting, where we installed our 2025 NICA Board of Directors

I am proud to introduce our 2025 Executive Committee: Jay Wells, CCE, President, Stacey Pittroff-Barona, CCE, 1st Vice President, Michelle Allen, CCE, 2nd Vice President, Sandy Class, CCE, Secretary, Bary Bunts, CCE, Treasurer, and Kim Barr, CCE, Immediate Past President. 2025 Incoming Directors included Michelle Allen, CCE, Nathan Vandewarker, Mickey Venegas, Midwest Council Ex-Officio, Nate Wells, CCE, West Council Ex-Officio, and Trent Wilkes. I want to thank and give a warm welcome to Nathan, Mickey, Nate, and Trent. Many may recognize Michelle’s name; she held the position of Ex-Officio from the West Council for the last two years and is now elected to the Board as a Director. I would also like to thank our returning Directors: Brandy Arredondo, CCE, Jacqueline Bradbury, CCE, Bryan Enloe, CCE, Dan Lusenhop, and Daryl Whicheloe, CCE. This brings your Board to 15 Officers and Directors, establishing your current leadership as approximately 60 people around the country that you can reach out to and that are available for questions and discussion on NICA, or if you just need someone to talk to during the season.

The Coca-Cola Membership Contest, our Gala Celebration, and our NICA Foundation Spotlight are just a few of the activities our members participated in during Florida Week. Four of our Past Scholarship Recipients were able to join us by video to give us a little insight into how much

the scholarships they received are helping them in their endeavors. It was delightful to witness these students excited about receiving financial support while very busy away at school, hitting the books.

Our Hall of Fame Award was presented to Kathy Ross, CCE, Past President Kathy is a founding member of NICA and she has enjoyed 40 years in her Food Concession Business, Ross Concessions, along with her husband Jeff.

There was also an honorary tribute—a toast to Tom Hodson, CCE Tom was a veteran of NICA as a founding member, a Past President, a NICA Foundation Trustee, and our 2022 Hall of Fame Recipient. Just this last year, he established the Masonic Band of Brothers Visionary Scholarship Tom was a friend of mine that I wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for NICA. There was not a ticket he couldn’t or wouldn’t sell, and his first question when speaking to someone about NICA was “Are you a NICA Member?” If you were not a member by the start of the conversation, you would be by the end. I don’t know anyone who brought in more members than Tom. Tom passed away January 17, 2025—He will be MISSED.

Another tragedy was Staff Member and East Coast Council and Social Media Coordinator Jessica Gottsche, who passed away unexpectedly in an accident. She was a bright shining star on our staff; working with her these last five years has been meaningful and exciting. What she brought to Marketplace, Expo, and the East Council will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Please remember her very young family in your hearts and prayers. Jessica was another friend I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of meeting without NICA.

The Excellence in Business Award was proudly presented to John and Bob Uhl, Century Industries After 47 years in business they have retired and sold the business to their employees. We wish the employees as much success as John and Bob have seen in their last half-century of business.

RIFFING WITH REY RIFFING WITH REY

The Circle of Life

“The Circle of Life is all around us every day. It represents a journey, but one that has no beginning or end. In that respect, a circle is in a continuous process of being.”

once-a-year event, yet we know that multiple once-ayear events make a massive economic impact. Our Fairs are contemporary gatherings and economic engines built to showcase small businesses—from Farmers to Concessionaires and more.” He invited us to share our warm fuzzy stories with local media that highlight the strong family businesses and the incredible people behind the unique food and fun, while also showing the economic engine that these small businesses drive.

His final observation was that we are a “tight community with open arms.” He went on to say, “From the moment my hiring was announced, people from all aspects of this Industry have reached out and provided a warm welcome. You have helped me learn aspects of the Industry I had no idea existed, but you’ve also shared your individual stories and how your business has passed through generations. It can be tough coming into an Industry that is so tightly knit. Trust me. But you are both a generational Industry that has been open to new people, new methods, and new ideas while embracing and passing down lessons learned from all areas of life into what we do. This point of view ensures that there is a place for Fairs well into the future.”

To David I say “Amen,” and I also want to add that I love that he not only wears bow ties, he re-ties them each time he wears them and does not own any other style of ties.

“Circle of Life” refers to the concept that life is a continuous cycle of birth, growth, death, and rebirth, representing the interconnectedness of all living things and the idea that life constantly renews itself, much like a circle with no beginning or end; it often symbolizes the balance between life and death across different generations.

I know we have shared sleepless nights, heartache, and prayers over the tragic, and unexpected death of our dear loved one, Jessica Gottsche. She was in a horrific snow mobile accident that occurred in Vermont. We are all still in full-on shock, devastation, and confusion, and we will need patience and time to privately and publicly express our grief.

Jessica and I met in Dennis Fraleigh’s stand at The Big E because he believed she would be a wonderful asset to our NICA team. For five years Jessica, Jesse, Linda, and I have met at 10:00 AM every Monday morning. Together we became our own “Dream Team” that counted on each other and

grew into many new skills and ideas. She was the Coordinator of the East Council and Social Media, the Liaison to the NICA Foundation, the Writer of many articles, a Developer of workshops, Speaker at Industry Gatherings, Fundraiser for NICA, and a huge Advocate for every aspect of the Fairs and Events Industry. She accomplished all this as a part-time contractor because she first and foremost was committed to being a great Mom to Robert, age 3, and Aubrey, age 7, and wife and friend to Rob.

With the help of others we are working on the continuity of work flow for which she was responsible. On an interim basis, John Juliano, CFE has agreed to coordinate the East Council with the leadership assistance of Bary Bunts, CCE, and Anne-Alise Pietruska has agreed to coordinate our Social Media with the leadership assistance of Jesse. We are grateful for our members’ support.

In answer to the question, “What can we do to help that will matter for a long time?” I have a suggestion. Jessica loved her children. Let’s each write letters to her children that share our own stories about our love and respect for her, her accomplishments, her sense of humor, how much she loved them, how much she loved her work, and whatever else comes to mind. Her children are young and will not remember her in the way we do; however, as they grow older, we can help provide her legacy for them with our collection of letters and photos.

In our celebration of her life that has ended too soon, please find suggestions for making donations in the tribute to Jessica’s life on pages 10 and 11. We are gently exploring what the family needs in the next few months such as food, meal service, child care, counseling, transportation, and financial support for the children’s current activities. We have already approved Jessica’s independent contractor fee for this year and will redirect the remaining part of the funds to serve the family’s immediate needs. She is Shining Bright on us from heaven and her legacy will Shine Brightly throughout NICA’s future. We are blessed and stronger to have had Jessica as part of our journey. We may never get over this sudden, unexpected, and tragic loss but we can include her passion, commitment, joy, intelligence, reliability, and energy into our future. She would want that. Rest in peace, my friend! Most Sincerely,

In Memory of Jessica Gottsche

It is with unimaginable sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Jessica Gottsche, East Council Coordinator, NICA Foundation Staff Liaison, NICA Voice Committee Staff Liaison, and Social Media Coordinator. While doing what she loved most, spending time away with her wonderful family in Vermont, Jessica was involved in a tragic accident.

Jessica was an instrumental part of our “Dream Team” here at NICA and she will be missed dearly. Rey O’Day, Executive Director, reflected, “When a life is cut too short, we lose a light that was just beginning to shine. In our time together, I watched her grow into a confident, creative leader on the threshold of fully embracing her role in our Industry. Though her absence saddens us, we honor her memory by cherishing the hope and inspiration she left behind.” Our prayers are with her family, who shared the following:

Jessica was born on February 19, 1983 to Peter and Terry Castro, in Holyoke, MA. She was a special light in this world and filled every room with her beautiful smile. She enjoyed life to the fullest, filling her days by spending time with her children and engaging in her rewarding career. Among her many loves in life were traveling to her favorite places with her family including Bar Harbor, MN, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. She enjoyed cheering for New England sports teams and was known to catch many a Red Sox game at Fenway Park or Camden Yards. She also loved the Fair Industry, traveling all over the country to take in their many sights and sounds, with her family by her side.

Jessica graduated from Gateway Regional High School in 2001 before attending Westfield State College to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 2005 and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 2007. After graduation, she worked as an Event Coordinator, Group Sales, and Concessions Manager at the Eastern States Exposition, also known as The Big E, where she met the love of her life, Rob. She made a tremendous impression, not only in her creativity, finely honed writing skills, and boundless energy, but with maturity, integrity, and professionalism beyond her years, and a million dollar smile that melted hearts across the Fairgrounds. Being around the entrepreneurial spirit of Concessionaires kept her inspired to better this Industry for Vendors, Fairs, and the Guest. In 2016, she joined NICA as the East Council Coordinator, eventually contributing her expertise as Social Media Coordinator in 2018, Staff Liaison to the NICA Foundation in 2020, and Staff Liaison to the NICA Voice Committee in 2023. In addition to her work with NICA and our Sister Organizations, she was employed at Baystate Health as a Talent Acquisition Marketing Specialist. She was very passionate about the work she did for these organizations, working from home while raising her two beautiful children. She was the best “Momma” to her babies, always putting them first and building a strong foundation for them to grow. They are her life’s greatest work and she was so proud to be their Momma.

Jessica leaves behind her husband Rob of 10 years and their two young children, Aubrey and Robert. She is also survived by her father, Peter Castro, sister Sarah Batchelor (John), and her sister Kellyn Castro. Along with her mother-in-law, Edith Gottsche, she also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Jessica was predeceased by her mother, Terry (LaBombard) Castro, maternal grandparents Madeline and Daniel LaBombard, paternal grandparents Ernest and her father-in-law, Robert A. Gottsche, Sr. Jessica will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her humanity, humility, and honesty. For her charisma and uncanny ability to create a community wherever she went. For the boundless and exquisite love for her family. For the friendships she forged and maintained across the miles. She brought joy and light to many. Hers was a life well lived, and her absence will be deeply felt.

“In life, we loved you dearly—in death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one else will ever fill.”

Donations in Jessica’s memory can be made to:

• Jessica K. Gottsche Memorial Fund, Westfield Bank, 26 Arnold St, Westfield, MA 01085. This fund will be used to help support Jessica’s young children with the many financial needs that her family will encounter as they grow.

• UMass Memorial ALS Clinic, 55 Lake Ave North, Worcester, MA 01655. This clinic has provided research and care over the years to members of Jessica’s family who have suffered with ALS, and it was an important cause near to her heart. ▲

Communication and management are definitely intertwined, and you cannot be an effective and successful manager without communication. My philosophy on management communication, as it pertains to my business, is “the more information, the better.” I get the need-to-know communication, and this works to a certain degree. Nobody likes to walk into any situation with unanswered questions. At Pacific Crest Concessions, we pride ourselves on delivering an amazing product with a wonderful experience. The way to make that happen is to ensure you are clear and concise when introducing your product to a customer so there are no hidden or unexpected costs and to ensure the customer is getting what they are paying for. Make sure you are consistent every time you communicate with your team. Know whatever your expectations are and then relay those expectations to your team so there is no confusion. You can use this with the management on the Fairgrounds you work with, too. You need to clearly state your expectations you require from them to make you both successful along with them clearly state to you what they expect so they

can have as smooth as possible event. This is how we can ensure everyone is able to supply each customer and patron with a wonderful experience. Communication can be relayed to you by your customers as well. Listen to what they have to say about both the good and bad in their experiences. When you share this feedback with your team and give them a voice to communicate how they think they can provide a better experience, you are more likely to have happier employees, customers, and a management team that you work with. Everyone wins! Be open to communication and change, too. As management, we are not above receiving information to change ourselves to make a better experience for customers and your team. ▲

Our Concession Company, Southern Oregon Food and Beverage, is a family operation like many other Concession Companies in the Fair Industry. Basically, if you are one of our kids, a sibling, cousin, or married into the family, you have a job with us. We also hire many local employees that travel the season with us year-after-year and have essentially become family. We have a philosophy

is

the CCE Program?

The Certified Concessionaire Executive Program was developed over 20 years ago to recognize the professionalism of Concessionaires, with the title representing a deep understanding and respect for the Fair and Festival Business and indicates that the titleholder will perform at their highest ability. Before applying, the applicant must have a minimum of seven years as a fulltime Chief Operating Manager of an Independent Concession Business and be a current member of NICA, at least one State Association, such as

WFA, and one of the following associations: IAFE, IFEA, and/or OABA. This prestigious designation is awarded only after a detailed application process has been successfully met, including a point-based questionnaire to determine their level of qualifications and Industry involvement and a personal philosophy of communication and management as it relates to the Fair Industry. Once certified, the official presentation ceremony takes place at an annual Industry event.

Whitney Fraleigh, East Council Member

Hello NICA Members!

My Name is John Hanus and I am the Director of Procurement Services within Entegra Procurement Services I am honored to have the opportunity to work with NICA for their members to realize the savings and benefits that our continued partnership can provide.

I live in Naperville, IL with my wife and we’re blessed to have four boys, ages 8 to 22. They keep us busy with basketball games and other activities, and one of my favorite things to do is keep them all fed. I love waking up early when they are all home to make them a full breakfast to order. Nothing is off the menu—eggs the way they like, Swedish pancakes and/or French toast. Besides cooking and going to my boys’ sporting events, I enjoy the outdoors and home remodeling projects.

Prior to working for Entegra, my experience has spanned working in different Food and Beverage Operations, the Hotel Industry, and managing large Special Events like Super Bowls and the Olympics.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with NICA’s former Entegra account representative, Todd Patrick, before he moved on, and I joined Todd last November at the 2024 NICA Marketplace “Together!” convention in Las Vegas. It was great meeting so many members to learn about them and the Fair Industry. Todd set the standard that I look forward to carrying on into the future.

In my time working with NICA and its membership, it’s gratifying to know that Entegra can help make an impact across the different businesses within the association, both on and off the Fairgrounds. Helping members save and realize the benefits of the Entegra / NICA Partnership is ultimately my goal.

For those not familiar with or signed up on the Entegra program, we are your GPO (Group Purchasing Organization) partner. We leverage

our $42 Billion in spending to help drive down costs of goods and services. A majority of our food contracts are distributed through NICA’s distribution partner, Sysco. We also offer savings on non-food suppliers and services through our local and direct supplier network. If you have a need, just ask and our team will let you know the best solution to support your business.

To get started, visit www.nicainc.org/entegra to sign up today. If you have questions, you have a team that can help! Please reach out to myself at john.hanus@entegraps.com, Entegra Customer Service at (866) 368-3472, Sysco through Angela Ginsbach at angela.ginsbach@sysco.com and Sarah Hartzog at sarah.hartzog@sysco.com, or the NICA Office at (813) 438-8926.

My colleagues and I at Entegra look forward to “Shining Bright!” as a partner that can help your business save and operate more efficiently. I look forward to supporting NICA Members at the next NICA Marketplace “Together!” convention in November. Until then, PLEASE don’t hesitate to reach out as we’re here to help. This year is NICA’s 32nd Anniversary and Entegra hopes to be your partner for many years to come. Entegra’s Vision Statement is “Together We Bring Hospitality to Life.” NICA’s is “Together We Can!” Our Vision Statements align and TOGETHER we will aim for success. Thank you for your partnership! ▲

Monday’s Educational Sessions and Workshops, sponsored by Meester Mike’s of Coral Gables, Poppie’s Concessions, Super Dog, Vinnie’s Fine Foods, and Wells Concessions, opened with an informative Keynote Address entitled “Transition and Succession Planning Essentials,” presented by Courtny Hinds, CCE, CFE, Wyoming State Fair. Succession planning is a critical component for the longevity of any organization, especially in the dynamic world of Fairs, Event Companies, Vendors, and Associations. This insightful Keynote Address emphasized the importance of proactive planning to ensure smooth transitions across diverse roles, from full-time professionals to dedicated volunteers.

and

“Commercial Exhibits Enhance the Guest Experience” followed, moderated by Dan Lusenhop, Past President, bringing together Industry Experts Ryan Rickey, Rickey’s Jerky, James Romer, CFE, Iowa State Fair, and Pam Simon, CFE, Minnesota State Fair, to discuss innovative strategies for rethinking shopping at Fairs. The panel explored how new business partnerships can transform the guest experience by attracting more customers and engaging hesitant Retail Vendors.

Attendees then gathered for complimentary Boxed Lunches and an engaging set of timely Roundtable Discussions, sponsored by The Best Around and moderated by Jessica Gottsche, East Council Coordinator. Highlights from the Annual Gala Celebration’s Spotlight on Scholarships

On February 12, 2025, the NICA Foundation held its annual face-to-face meeting of its Board of Trustees. Fundraising for 2025 was discussed as well as our generous donors who have committed to supporting the Foundation through scholarships. The Foundation awarded $52,000 to Scholarship Recipients in 2024, and plans for 2025 are to increase the total amount of scholarships to $60,000! We appreciate all our donors and their continued support, and we would like to welcome our new Board Trustees: Michelle Allen, CCE, NICA 2nd Vice President, Vincent Nelson, CCE, NICA Past President, Stacey Pittroff-Barona, CCE, NICA 1st Vice President, Kathy Ross, CCE, NICA Past President, and Ron Smith, NICA Past President. They are committed to expanding our Scholarship Applicant pool, including Vocational Applicants, as well as new fundraising opportunities. We are excited about the coming year and how the Foundation can continue to assist those to further their education.

During the program for NICA’s “Shining Bright!” Gala Celebration, the NICA Foundation was featured in a special spotlight presentation given by Jessica Gottsche, Foundation Liaison, and Audrey Poole, Foundation President. Jessica introduced a video centered around Legacy Families, produced by Eastern States Exposition,

Pat

and

about Poppie’s Concessions. They also recognized the family, who was in attendance during the Gala. After introducing the Trustees of the Board, Reilly Berk, Foundation Trustee, joined them on stage to announce a partnership that Berk Enterprises has formed with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to support childhood cancer research.

The NICA Foundation Spotlight also served as an opportunity for Past Recipients to thank the NICA Foundation and let the attendees know how it has benefited them. Audrey Poole, Foundation President, proudly introduced Molly Menchen, 2023 Scholarship Recipient, who shared her experiences on stage.

Four additional Past Recipients Sam Beach, James MacPherson, Taylor Coffman, and Cayden Neal—joined us by video to express their appreciation for NICA Foundation Scholarships.

The NICA Foundation Trustees met at the event: Reilly Berk, James McConnell, Daryl Whicheloe, CCE, Vice President, Ron Smith, Audrey Poole, President, Stacey Pittroff-Barona, CCE, Carmel Dyer-Pittroff, Kathy Ross, CCE, Treasurer, Vincent Nelson, CCE, Larry Sivori, Rey O’Day, Secretary, and Michelle Allen, CCE

to Tom Hodson, CCE, Foundation Trustee, who passed away in January. His family, represented by Josh Hodson, Holly Elomina Hodson, and Ann Menchen, came on stage to speak about their recent loss and their commitment to supporting the NICA Foundation in his honor with the Thomas Hodson Visionary Scholarship, funded in perpetuity. Two of the ten members of the Masonic Band of Brothers, recruited by Tom, also joined them on stage to present their check for $25,000 (over the course of five years). Audrey and Jessica then proceeded to thank the NICA Foundation’s many generous donors in 2024. To their surprise, Laura and Ron Porter, Fare Foods, also presented a renewed donation check to the Foundation. After the NICA Foundation Spotlight concluded, Kathy Ross, CCE, Foundation Treasurer, was announced as the Hall of Fame Recipient. As she finished her acceptance speech, she encouraged others to join her in the newly established “Ben Franklin Club,” where each member will pledge

to donate $100 to NICA Foundation scholarships every year. She asked, “Would you like to join the club?” Amazingly, 30 people joined the “Ben Franklin Club” that same day!

If you would like to join others in the “Ben Franklin Club” or sponsor a scholarship in a family member’s name or your business, please contact any of our Trustees or the NICA Office. We applaud all generations of Concessionaires who are not afraid to follow their dreams, whether it is going to college, attending Industry events, or starting their own Concession Stand! It is heartwarming to know that the Scholarship Program has impacted so many people in such a positive way. We cannot thank each and every one of you enough for your commitment to the NICA Foundation. ▲

Gathering in Indio

In February, the West Council teamed up with the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival, in Indio, CA, to host their Second Annual Fair Luncheon. We arrived at the Fair one day earlier to visit with Vendors and Commercial Exhibitors. The next morning, we met up with Council Members and set up the room before the event started. Once everyone arrived, we gave everyone a Door Prize ticket—we had lots of donated prizes! Chris Pickering, Pickering Events, spoke about the Fair and Don Delahoyde, CCE, West Council Coordinator, talked about the many benefits of NICA. Don also did a quiz on NICA Facts with Starbucks gift cards as prizes!

While engaging in conversations and networking during the Fair Luncheon, attendees also had the chance to participate in exciting opportunity drawings. The Free NICA Membership was won by Nick Pickering, Pickering Events, and the 50/50 prize went to Denise Warner, Commercial Exhibits Council. Many more prizes were awarded to our close to 60 attendees, ranging from Beef Jerky and Speakers to Printers

and Trailer Equipment—Congratulations! Of course, no luncheon would be complete without a buffet of tasty food and refreshing beverages, courtesy of Zach Sawyer, Stizzy Works, and his team.

A special thank you goes out to the organizers, whose hard work made this event possible: Chris Pickering, of Pickering Events, and West Council Coordinators Don Delahoyde, CCE and Julie Dunn, along with West Council’s Gigi Horowitz, CCE, Ryan Long, CCE, Miki Martin, CCE, and Albert Valadez. Now an annual tradition, the West Council looks forward to next year’s event in Indio! ▲
