” In the Niagara region, our nature and our history are tied together.
The trails along the river in the Niagara Gorge are remnants of a trolley route. Some of the old retaining walls and part of a layover station still exist next to the whirlpool rapids. Golden Hill State Park has an amazing treasure trove of remnants of a bygone era. At DeVeaux Woods State Park, Schoellkopf Hall was a residential school dormitory built in 1930. The school, private in its later years, was originally opened for destitute and orphaned boys, many of whom lost parents in the Civil War. Behind it, a beautiful old growth forest has trees old enough that some of those boys would’ve walked among them.

We’re gearing up for the 250th birthday of the US in 2026. The American Revolution broke out in 1775 so we’ll be commemorating events that happened then. The French Castle turns 300 in 2026. We’re hoping to see a lot of visitors nationally and internationally to celebrate these historic birthdays. The fort was built by the French, taken over by the British, then the Americans. It played a big role in European relations with the Indigenous communities. We’re constructing a log house to replicate what Native Americans lived in as refugees brought to the fort.

“The soils on the Niagara Escarpment were formed millions of years ago when the whole area was underwater and full of mineral-rich marine life. Climate-wise, Lake Ontario doesn’t freeze over in winter, which keeps the climate a little bit warmer and allows fruit trees and grapes to winter-over. Looking at latitude, it’s similar to the Burgundy region of France in that it’s cool-climate viticulture.”

Our wines are higher in acid, lower in alcohol, and pair really well with food. There’s not many jammy esters that overpower food flavors. Chardonnay is the number-one drank wine in the world, and the grapes grow really well here, as well as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Pinot Noir.

When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, it marked a new era in American transportation, making it easier to transport people and goods across New York State. The 360-mile canal connected Lake Erie to the Hudson River, boosting local economies along its route. Its system of locks was an engineering marvel of the time, allowing boats and barges to travel uphill, hauling commercial goods like lumber, grain, and produce more quickly and cheaply than by ox-drawn wagons.
The Erie Canal's Bicentennial Celebration spans the entire length of this historic waterway, featuring special events, engaging exhibits, tours, and more at sites across New York State like these:
