Niagara Falls State Park

Every year, millions of people from all over the world make the pilgrimage to Niagara Falls State Park to witness the grandeur of the Falls up close. And while the park offers several stunning vantage points to view this natural wonder,

there’s much more to explore than the precipice.

Established in 1885, Niagara Falls is the oldest state park in America. With more than 400 acres of terrain along the Niagara River’s rushing

rapids and overlooking the rocky Niagara Gorge, the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed park includes a series of islands, overlook points, wooded areas, and trails, along with free programming and guided hikes offered year-round.

The country’s oldest state park is making innovative strides toward sustainability. The Maid of the Mist is now 100% electric, the Niagara Scenic Trolley runs on eco-friendly natural gas, and the Welcome Center has been proudly re-imagined as a green facility from top to bottom.

Hop aboard the Niagara Scenic Trolley for a quick lift between the park’s most popular attractions and viewing areas, along with historical anecdotes and fun facts.

Spring in the park

In spring, look for birds and blooms to emerge as nature begins to wake for warmer weather. It’s the perfect time for a picnic overlooking the lush landscape and spectacular Falls views. Expert insights

Every place has a story to tell—or several. What happened here? Who are the local legends? What’s the backstory behind what makes this place unique? The best people to ask are local guides, experts, and business owners who have made it their lives’ work to uncover and share the narratives that make the Niagara Region so special.

"It’s all connected: our industrial past, the creation of Niagara Falls State Park itself, the impact that had on the environmental movement. We can’t talk about the history of the region without talking about the environment, and vice versa. You can see traces of history in natural spaces throughout the area.”

” In the Niagara region, our nature and our history are tied together.

The trails along the river in the Niagara Gorge are remnants of a trolley route. Some of the old retaining walls and part of a layover station still exist next to the whirlpool rapids. Golden Hill State Park has an amazing treasure trove of remnants of a bygone era. At DeVeaux Woods State Park, Schoellkopf Hall was a residential school dormitory built in 1930. The school, private in its later years, was originally opened for destitute and orphaned boys, many of whom lost parents in the Civil War. Behind it, a beautiful old growth forest has trees old enough that some of those boys would’ve walked among them.

We’re gearing up for the 250th birthday of the US in 2026. The American Revolution broke out in 1775 so we’ll be commemorating events that happened then. The French Castle turns 300 in 2026. We’re hoping to see a lot of visitors nationally and internationally to celebrate these historic birthdays. The fort was built by the French, taken over by the British, then the Americans. It played a big role in European relations with the Indigenous communities. We’re constructing a log house to replicate what Native Americans lived in as refugees brought to the fort.

“The soils on the Niagara Escarpment were formed millions of years ago when the whole area was underwater and full of mineral-rich marine life. Climate-wise, Lake Ontario doesn’t freeze over in winter, which keeps the climate a little bit warmer and allows fruit trees and grapes to winter-over. Looking at latitude, it’s similar to the Burgundy region of France in that it’s cool-climate viticulture.”

Our wines are a direct result of this region’s unique soil and climate.

Our wines are higher in acid, lower in alcohol, and pair really well with food. There’s not many jammy esters that overpower food flavors. Chardonnay is the number-one drank wine in the world, and the grapes grow really well here, as well as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Pinot Noir.

When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, it marked a new era in American transportation, making it easier to transport people and goods across New York State. The 360-mile canal connected Lake Erie to the Hudson River, boosting local economies along its route. Its system of locks was an engineering marvel of the time, allowing boats and barges to travel uphill, hauling commercial goods like lumber, grain, and produce more quickly and cheaply than by ox-drawn wagons.

The Erie Canal's Bicentennial Celebration spans the entire length of this historic waterway, featuring special events, engaging exhibits, tours, and more at sites across New York State like these:

The Locks District Museum is centrally located between the Flight of Five Locks and the Erie Barge Canal Locks, and tells the story of how the Erie Canal was built—by hand and animal power.

Explore life as a lock tender on the 45-minute Flight of Five Lock Tender Tour and learn about the men who labored to lock through over 1,000 boats a year.

The Lock Tenders Tribute Monument memorializes the crew that worked 12-hour days from May through November operating Lockport’s Flight of Five Locks for passing freight boats.

Blackman Homestead Farm in Lockport has been growing tree fruits for six generations, and offers u-pick apples, fresh-pressed cider, jams and fruit butters, and other locally produced agricultural products.

Gaeta Family Farm in Lockport produces pure maple treats for sale at its sugar house and grows fresh Christmas trees for sale during the holidays.

Hoover’s Dairy, a fifth-generation family operation in Sanborn, sells fresh, creamy white, chocolate, and strawberry milk bottled right at the dairy in glass bottles. The seasonal eggnog sells out every weekend.

Kin Loch Farmstead in Lockport is a lavender farm and apiary that hosts u-pick events and sells artisanal products infused with lavender, along with their latest venture, Next of Kin wine.

Sanger Farms & Bakery in Youngstown beckons visitors to its big red barn for homegrown produce, fresh baked treats, a cafe showcasing the farm’s harvests, and fresh fruit slushies. Farm tours are also available.

Singer Farm Naturals in Appleton specializes in tart cherry juice, garlic, and hemp, all offered among a variety of other local products in its restored 1840s dairy barn store.

Niagara Falls City Market is a staple in the local community, and features a rotating selection of seasonal produce and delectable baked goods. Additional farmers markets can be found in Lewiston, Lockport, Newfane, North Tonawanda, and Pendleton.
