Discovery Awaits
NU’s school counselor preparation program is built on a commitment to developing practitioners and leaders in the counseling profession who promote students’ academic, personal/social, and postsecondary development across diverse school settings. Graduates are expected to embody qualities including critical thinking, empathy, autonomy, ethical behavior, professionalism and responsibility, and multicultural sensitivity. Furthermore, candidates are expected to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and ethical standards outlined by the American School Counselor Association.
Curriculum

This program prepares graduate students to become school counselors at the elementary, middle, or high school levels. Through rigorous coursework and handson field experience, students are equipped to design and implement a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program. The focus is on addressing the needs of all students in three key areas: academic, career, and personal/social development. The school counseling program requires 48 credit hours, with an additional option for students to pursue a 12-credit Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS).
