He succeeds Dr. Dan Patterson after his 25 year tenure as President. Since opening its doors in 1967 in Welland, and expanding across the Niagara region and internationally, Niagara College has grown to become a leader in applied education and training.

Areas of Specialization include: the Canadian Food and Wine Institute (CFWI), Hospitality Management, Business Management, Horticulture and Environment, Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Technologies, Health and Wellness, Community Services, Preparatory and Access, and Community Security. Learning Enterprises in food, wine, beer, horticulture, esthetics and hair, dental, and health and wellness support our areas of specialization.

The unexpected rise of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the associated government measures and directives to protect the health and safety of citizens around the world required Niagara College to pivot quickly, in the middle of the Winter 2020 term, to an unplanned campus closure and shift to virtual delivery. Niagara College’s faculty, staff, and students all demonstrated remarkable passion, creativity, ingenuity, and resilience through this unprecedented and challenging time.

Focused on brewery operations, gender equity and inclusion, and sustainability in alignment with the UN’s sustainable development goals, the project pivoted to a remote launch when pandemic concerns restricted travel. › The campus is home to the NC Teaching Hair Salon, the Walker

Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Centre, NC Research and Innovation, a new Green Automotive Technology lab and the Rankin Technology Centre.

› The Applied Health Institute, which specializes in allied health programs, operates a functioning Dental Clinic offering services to the community while teaching experiential learning opportunities to students.

› A new video game, The Fallen, which originated as a student project at Niagara College, is now available on Steam – one of the biggest video game platforms on the planet. For a group of Game Development students who embarked on creating the game for their third-year capstone project in September 2018 – most have since graduated from the College – it’s a dream come true. Community Employment Services

World Biosphere Reserve, this 125-acre campus features ecological lagoons, wetland systems, landscaped gardens and a 40-acre on-campus teaching vineyard.

› The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus is named after the fifth president of Niagara College, Dr. Dan Patterson who was also recently named President Emeritus of NC and received a national award for his contributions to the post-secondary sector. Read the full story here.

› Students and visitors are also offered unique experiences at our on-campus enterprises - The NC Teaching Brewery; Teaching Winery; Teaching Distillery; NC Teaching Greenhouse; NC Teaching Spa; and Benchmark, a student-led restaurant that showcases food, wine, beer and spirits created and prepared by students.

Following graduation ceremonies this year, NC KSA now has over 3,000 proud graduates. NC KSA programming at all sites turned to remote delivery in March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in adherence with directives from the government related to campus closure. Students have responded exceptionally well to the first-ever online learning initiative in KSA, with attendance and participation rates at an all-time high for the balance of the semester. The addition of the Indigenous garden at the Welland Campus allows Indigenous students and staff at Niagara College’s Welland Campus to have a dedicated outdoor space to help them feel connected to their roots and the earth.

January 29, 2020 marked the re-opening of the relocated and expanded Indigenous Lounge at the College’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagaraon-the-Lake. Read the full story here

Land acknowledgement › Acquisition of the Niagara Corporate Business Centre, a 33-acre property adjacent to the Daniel J. Patterson campus, featuring a three-story office building, which increases the footprint of the campus and provides longterm flexibility and room for expansion. Read the full story here.

Welland Campus › Renovated Technology lab spaces and equipment renewal in the Voyageur wing provide expanded space for students in the Electronics/ Electrical, Industrial Automation, and Photonics program.

› Renovated Eva M. Lewis Library, featuring new furniture and a redesigned flexible library space, with an upcoming digital makerspace with equipment for filming and editing media, designing graphics, and creating prototypes with a 3D printer. Read the full story here.

Niagara College is located on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Attawandaron peoples, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples and acknowledging this reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous peoples.

Niagara College is committed to driving an integrated culture of sustainability that goes beyond operations at the college to create living laboratories to facilitate experiential learning for students, employees, and community members. In the fall of 2019, the college experienced its most successful Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up event hosted by the Office of Sustainability in partnership with World Wildlife Fund-Canada.

This year’s community shoreline litter clean-up, saw over 30 students clean-up over 200lbs of landfill waste between two sites. Some highlights include 526 plastic bottle caps, 491 cigarette butts, 278 drinking straws, a car bumper, a broken home water line, and multiple types of microplastic from one site alone!

Research & Innovation (R&I) Niagara College supports economic development in Niagara and beyond by providing highly-skilled, knowledgeable graduates with the real-world experience that applied education imparts. › NC donated more than 30,000 pieces of personal protective equipment to frontline healthcare workers in coordination with Niagara Health, and continues to produce face shields at the Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre, along with disinfectant and hand sanitizer at the Teaching Distillery. Highlights of grant funding secured in 2019-20 include:

› $5 million in new FedDev Ontario funding for a Greenhouse Technology Network, anchored at the Daniel J. Patterson campus was announced on September 3rd, 2019 and brings together research institutions, greenhouse growers and technology providers to accelerate the development, commercialization and adoption of new technologies.

› Nearly $2 million through the College and Community Innovation Program funded

by the Ministry of Science and Sport and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) was announced on June 13th, 2019.

The funding supports researchers working with the region’s manufacturing sector to accelerate the use of advanced technologies, such as machine learning, robotics and 3D printing, and toward equipment for researchers looking into the agricultural factors that can impact the production of cannabis.

› On July 11th, 2019 FedDev Ontario committed $14 million to Niagara College to expand the Southern Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation (SONAMI), a network of seven postsecondary institutions that pools the resources and expertise of its members and matches them to the needs of smaller manufacturers to adopt cutting-edge technologies, increase productivity, and grow and diversify their businesses into new markets.
