Time: 2:00 - 4:00 PM

Women have served in America’s armed forces since the Revolutionary War, taking on roles that have often been voluntary, sometimes secret, and frequently dangerous. Their contributions, whether denigrated or self-defined, have consistently demonstrated bravery, a sense of purpose, and patriotism. Motivated by a desire for equality, recognition, and service, women have played an indispensable part in the nation’s military history. This interactive seminar is the next in Dr. Gooch’s series “VOICES”, in which women in the larger military organization, and more specifically in the Army, Navy, and Army Nurse Corps were discussed. This discussion will explore the history and impact of women on the military, the realms of service, and the integrity of the United States. The presentation will offer insights into the impact on service men’s adjustments, jobs, duties, workplaces, and changing relationships between men and women.
Dr. Charlene Gooch served as a U.S. Army Nurse during the Vietnam Era. Her twenty five year career in nursing was as a clinician and faculty member. She followed that with positions as Director of Employee Assistance Services in universities (Iowa State, American University, and Arizona State), and an ongoing career as a family therapist in private practice. Charlene earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Maryland / Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing in Washington, D.C., her Master’s degree in Public Health Nursing and Higher Education, and her Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Family Therapy at Iowa State University. Dr. Gooch is the Ambassador in Iowa, a volunteer for the Military Women’s Memorial, the only national memorial for military women, for which she registers women veterans as members, gathering their stories and military histories. In addition to teaching several LLI courses and presenting at national conferences, she has given several Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day presentations in surrounding north Iowa communities.
Lifelong Learning has been such a worthwhile use of my time and provided me with information about a wide range of topics, things I might never have thought about before. I have also met some wonderful new friends through it!

FICTIONARY is an original word game, combining creativity and vocabulary building. Using an 1800s dictionary in fascicles, groups of four take turns playing this delightful and often hilarious game. With each turn, one player selects an obscure word. The other three players invent plausible definitions, which are then read aloud alongside the actual definition. Points are awarded to the word selector for each incorrect guess and to players whose fake definitions are chosen by others. It’s a fantastic way to expand your vocabulary while having fun! (A commercial version exists, but it shall remain unnamed.)
Burton Everist grew up in Mason City until his family moved to California when he was in the 8th grade. He has explored the uses and effects of media for more than fifty years. In his studies for his B.A., MDiv, and STM, he included courses focused on communication and group processes. He has developed workshops to provide awareness of the influence the diverse media has on us. Later, he created features for the nationally syndicated PM Magazine and produced two regular cable television series.

In honor of Presidents’ Day, this presentation will explore the life and presidency of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States. Serving a single term from 1845 to 1849, Polk oversaw significant territorial expansion. He resolved the border dispute with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory and secured additional land from Mexico following the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). These territorial gains heightened tensions over slavery, which ultimately contributed to the Civil War. The presentation will include a recommended reading list and a handout, followed by a Q&A session.

A marathon is 26.2 miles. Many runners refer to running a marathon as living a lifetime. You start out full of energy and spirit. However, it is the last two miles of the race, no matter how many marathons you’ve run or whether you finish first or last that you experience loneliness, pain, and doubt. Much like the latter years of our lives. How do we handle the burdens and joys of life as we head for the finish line? Dennis has run eighteen marathons and experienced a lifetime of emotions each time. He’d like to share with you those experiences and how he’s dealing with running these last two miles of his life.
Dennis S. Wilson has been married for sixty years. He and his wife Anna have two children and two grandchildren. He graduated from college at age 74. He was employed by the Milwaukee & CP railroads for forty-two years. He worked as a conductor, union representative, a safety advisor, and helped develop Quality Management programs. Learning a new skill or joining a discussion group is a great way to find connections where you live. Lifelong Learning has made me more aware of the talents and skills of my friends and neighbors. In 1957, I passed up college on graduation from high school. After some forty years working on the railroad, I decided to return and get my degree. NIACC was a perfect fit with working and being able to attend night classes. During this time a Life Long Learning program was started in which I’ve taken part as a student, advisor, and teacher since the first semester. What I enjoy about LLI is the classes are taught by people who have a passion for something they are well versed in and have more than a common knowledge of the subject they teach.
A good example is Bennett Smith’s history classes. Always filled. You never attend without learning something. LLI impacted my life by the opportunities it provides. Opportunities to learn, teach and meet people with new ideas and views.
My favorite quote is from Mrs. Cleveland, my country school teacher.
“Never let a day pass that you don’t learn something.”

Lifelong Learning got its start with both Judy and me several years ago while we were in the process of rehabilitating 4 new knees. The use of the weight room and walking track was invaluable to us and available whenever we wished to use it. After a major accident and subsequent back surgery, I considered it a major success to make a single lap on the track as many other good folks consistently lapped me, offering encouragement! Several NIACC coaches, faculty, and staff also provided invaluable good wishes and smiles throughout those most challenging and difficult times.
LLL has also offered both of us the opportunity to share subjects that we are passionate about and enjoy sharing with others. Barns, canoeing, safe driving, and gratitude headline what we have
presented and because we both had a really poor history teacher in high school, Bennet Smith has a way of bringing history to life and we really enjoy his abilities in the classroom. We also really enjoy Nancy and the late Chuck Sweetman’s travels and personal stories. Gentle fitness is also fun!
Lastly, we have gotten to know many, many other Lifelong Learners that otherwise we would have never gotten to know as well as we have, and appreciate seeing and visiting with them at other events we attend. We appreciate all that the coordinators of LLL have done for the program over the years and we hope that others will make LLL a part of their “retirement”!
