A MESSAGE FROM THE LIFELONG LEARNING COORDINATOR
Recently, I found myself reflecting on my job. When I started just over three years ago, I was able to figure out my tasks and understand the expectations. But I didn’t fully anticipate all the other parts of the role that would come along with it. So often, when we go to work, we hope for that feeling that it’s more than just a job.
I think I realized pretty early on that this job is something special. But the moment that really caught me by surprise came last semester, when the cover was finalized for our Spring 2025 catalog. I had a vision for how it might look, but when I saw it — really saw it — something unexpected happened. I looked at all those faces on the cover and said, without thinking, “Oh my goodness… I love these people!”
To me, lifelong learning is more than just a job. It’s more than checking boxes or finishing tasks. It’s about sharing my excitement for learning. It’s about building friendships and forming meaningful connections — with all of you and with our incredible instructors.
If you’ve been around me for a while, you probably know I’m an extremely excitable person. Over my 27+ years of teaching, I’ve always tried to bring that same energy to my students. But during the last few years of teaching high school
PE and health, something started to shift. It became harder and harder to stay excited — and to inspire that excitement in others. The burnout was real.
And then came lifelong learning.
Greetings Lifelong Learners,
The energy you all bring your curiosity, your joy, your genuine love for learning it’s absolutely contagious. I find myself getting excited just listening to your conversations about upcoming classes, the catalog, and all the behind-thescenes buzz.
Welcome to the fall 2018 semester and the celebration year anniversary. It was exactly ten years ago that offered and a membership of 91 active students and an average of 250 active members per semester
We will be honoring faculty and members at the the success of the LLI. We will introduce the new learn about the diverse and exciting class offerings
Continuing with this “more than” theme, lifelong learning is more than coming to class. It’s more than sitting and listening. It’s a chance to connect with others. It’s an opportunity to fill your bucket. It’s a space where you can continue to grow and explore — without the pressure of grades or deadlines. It helps us stay connected, confident, and vibrant.
So, whether you are picking this brochure up for the wonderful opportunities where you can become fee of $99, you will have unlimited access to the more about what LLI has to offer But, most importantly, friends, and trying out a new class. You have nothing
Lifelong learning reminds us that we are capable at any age and at any stage.
As a lifelong learner, you will find many different
So, I look forward to seeing you in class!
And all of this? It makes me more than excited.

Join us for an adventure to a peaceful getaway created by Dyan’s dad, Bill Fluhrer. Located just outside of Charles City near the family farm, this retreat is the result of Bill’s vision and hard work, shared with his wife, Pat. It all began with a simple pond for fishing. From there, they transformed a small house — once used by a hired hand on the farm — into a charming log cabin. Next came a custom-built treehouse for the grandkids. Most impressively, Bill relocated a silo from his heritage farm and converted it into a unique three-story dwelling, complete with a bedroom, reading room, kitchenette, and an observatory on the top floor. Dyan will lead a guided tour, followed by time to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings.
After retiring from farming, Bill Fluhrer has truly been the definition of lifelong learning. He is a man of many hobbies
with a creative mind that has led him to learn to make stained glass, pottery, and furniture, restore vehicles, raise buffalo, and create the getaway described in the course description. He was raised on his farm outside of Charles City, where he still lives with his wife, Pat, and where they raised their four daughters.

We will consider the challenges of developing trust between individuals and within groups. People have a variety of backgrounds and opinions. When trust is solid, people have the courage to care about each other.

Day and Time: Wednesday 4 - 5:30 PM
Location: NIACC Beem Center - BC200
Class ID: 20929

Our Constitution Day presentation is open to the public.
A decade after gaining independence, the United States was unraveling — disunited, burdened by debt, and dangerously weak. What followed in the summer of 1787 wasn’t merely a convention in Philadelphia; it was a carefully orchestrated, bloodless second American revolution. Through the creation and ratification of a new Constitution, a new government was born.
John Lee is a dedicated educator, coach, and public servant with over three decades of experience shaping minds and building communities. Since starting his teaching career in 1995, John has tried to make a lasting impact in the classroom and on the football field, where he has served as head coach for Mason City High School for two different stints, totaling 13 years. Elected to the city council in 2011, he has faced complex decisions, like the controversial Pork Plant debate, always attempting to keep the community’s best interests at heart. John’s leadership is rooted in community and Mason City’s rich history, while focusing on our future and the belief that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

Day and Time: Wednesday 4 - 5:30 PM
Location: NIACC Beem Center - BC200

This session traces the American experiment back to its deepest roots: the social contract. Beginning with John Locke’s belief that governments derive their legitimacy from the consent of the governed, we explore how the Founders, especially James Madison, argued that liberty cannot endure without individual virtue. From Alexis de Tocqueville’s keen observations of early democracy to Theodore Roosevelt’s rallying cry for the citizen in the
arena and Calvin Coolidge’s solemn reverence for civic duty, we uncover a powerful truth: citizenship is not merely a right we possess, but a responsibility we agree to uphold, generation after generation.

Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At 82, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head. As Fred walks in Bernard’s shoes, he leaves a trail of kindness behind him, fueling caretaker Denise’s suspicions about his true identity. When unexpected truths are revealed, Fred and Denise rediscover their sense of purpose and learn how to return a broken life to mint condition. The book can be found at your local libraries and on Amazon. For a local purchase, please consider shopping at Three Bells Books, 14 S Commercial Alley, Mason City.

If the Founders built a republic on virtue, sacrifice, and a shared social contract, what does that contract look like now? In the wake of 9/11, America briefly rediscovered unity and civic spirit, but two decades later, technology, social media, and hyper-partisan echo chambers have fractured that shared purpose. This session explores how the digital age has reshaped truth, identity, and responsibility. Citizenship now requires discernment over reaction, contribution over consumption, and courage over comfort. In a world of clicks and chaos, we must ask: are we still willing to bear the burden, and if so, how?
See John Lee’s bio on page 8.

Join the Provocative Literature Study Circle for a thoughtprovoking and enlightening series of discussions on The Righteous Mind by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. His text challenges ‘’conventional thinking about morality, politics, and religion in a way that speaks to everyone on the political spectrum.’’ Haidt’s book illustrates ‘’how moral judgements arise not from reason but from gut feelings... Libertarians, conservatives, and liberals have...different intuitions about right and wrong. And each side is actually right about many of its central concerns.’’ (from book blurb)
Think your political views are formed by rationality? Think again.

Dennis Wilson
In 1959, Mason City’s Mayor George Mendon started a campaign to bring a railroad steam engine to town. He said, ‘’Future generations must have an example of the railroad’s history.’’ Shortly, the M&StL 457, built in 1912, found a home in East Park. Forty-five years later, the old engine was an unsightly piece of rusted-out history destined for the scrap pile. This is a story about the restoration of that engine, the people who did it, and how they did it.
Dennis S. Wilson has been married for sixty years. He and his wife, Anna, have two children and two grandchildren. He graduated from college at age 74. He was employed by the Milwaukee & CP railroads for 42 years. He worked as a conductor, a union representative, a safety advisor, and helped develop Quality Management programs. He experienced strikes, bankruptcies, mergers, deadly accidents, and radical changes in the railroad industry. Dennis has climbed a few mountains, run a few marathons, and has written a few magazine articles. He is always searching for the “new in life”.

Yes, people play games. Books and now a TV series feature the games people play. But when we play games, games play us. From Snakes and Ladders to Monopoly, the assumptions we make and the roles we choose to play us. Session participants view the changes in the game LIFE over the years to see that its activities have been modified by changes in society. “Games” come in many guises: stories, films, and even advertising can draw us in, change our minds, and alter our activities. And, yes, games are played just for the fun of it. The class will get to play at least one simple game and then think about playing any game with friends or family, and note how it plays the players.
Burton Everist grew up in Mason City until his family moved to California when he was in the 8th grade. He has explored the uses and effects of media for more than fifty years. In his studies for his B.A., MDiv, and STM, he included courses focused on communication and group processes. He has developed workshops to provide awareness of the influence the diverse media has on us. Later, he created features for the nationally syndicated PM Magazine and produced two regular cable television series.

This class will cover the history of Amish and Mennonites in Iowa and the world. Roger will also cover issues like taxes, military service, and medical care.
Roger is fully retired and is active in his church, on the board of the River City Society for Historic Preservation, and serves as a docent at the Stockman House. He grew up on a dairy and hog farm in Waukon, Iowa. After graduating from ISU with an Agricultural Business degree, he farmed with his father and launched a 37-year career with the Farm Credit System. He was involved in agricultural lending in Elkader, Decorah, De Witt, Osage, and Mason City, and also served for the Omaha Farm Credit District Supervision for multiple sites in Iowa. In 2009, he established his own crop insurance agency and was joined by his son Derek in 2001. He has a passion for all things agriculture and appreciated the opportunity to work with many wonderful traditional Iowa farmers, as well as Amish and Mennonite farmers in the course of his career.

When she lectured in Canberra and Castlecrag, Australia, in 2016, she was impressed that the design motifs used by the Griffins in Castlecrag were similar to those they used in Mason City for their Rock Crest–Rock Glen houses. Visitors to the Melson House had often told her that she needed to see the Griffin houses in Castlecrag. Her talk will highlight these similarities and explore the forward-looking architecture the Griffins created. The presentation will follow Walter and Marion to the end of their careers and lives.

After graduating from Ballard High School, she earned a B.A. in Art Education (K–12) from Iowa State University and was hired as an elementary art instructor for Mason City Schools. She later earned a master’s degree in Art Administration from Bank Street College of Education in partnership with Parsons School of Design in New York City. Lifelong Learning got its start with both Judy and me several years ago while we were in the process of rehabilitating four new knees. The use of the weight room and walking track was invaluable to us and available whenever we wished to use it. After a major accident and subsequent back surgery, I considered it a major success to make a single lap on the track as many other good folks consistently lapped me, offering encouragement! Several NIACC coaches, faculty, and staff also provided invaluable good wishes and smiles throughout those most challenging and difficult times.
LLI has also offered both of us the opportunity to share subjects that we are passionate about and enjoy sharing with others. Barns, canoeing, safe driving, and gratitude headline what we have
presented and because we both had a really poor history teacher in high school, Bennet Smith has a way of bringing history to life and we really enjoy his abilities in the classroom. We also really enjoy Nancy and the late Chuck Sweetman’s travels and personal stories. Gentle fitness is also fun!
Lastly, we have gotten to know many, many other Lifelong Learners that otherwise we would have never gotten to know as well as we have, and appreciate seeing and visiting with them at other events we attend. We appreciate all that the coordinators of LLI have done for the program over the years and we hope that others will make LLI a part of their “retirement”!
