vics is the only organization in the state at teaches civics for free to people of l ages, political views, and zip codes.
It is with great pride that I share this 2022 Annual Report on behalf of the NH Civics Board of Trustees and staff. With your support, we have seen a year of continued growth and impact around the state. We continue to position our organization as New Hampshire’s most trusted civics education resource.
For young people throughout the state, our programs like New Hampshire‘s Kid Governor®, Civics 603!, and Mikva Challenge Project Soapbox have engaged thousands in robust, hands-on civics education activities meant to build their confidence and amplify their voices.
For New Hampshire educators, we continue to be a reliable source of civics curriculum for grades K12. We offer professional development programs for K-12 educators and are helping them to build momentum for civics education in their classrooms and schools.
For the citizens of New Hampshire, we offer public events like the William W. Treat Lectures. Last fall featured visits from former US Deputy Assistant Attorney General and current Counselor to the Attorney General Maggie Goodlander and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. In the year ahead, we will continue to bring discourse with thoughtful, civics-minded community leaders to the forefront.
Another great source of pride is the NH Civic Learning Coalition, now 50 members strong and representing educators, students, administrators, and civics partners across the state. This diverse group of citizens has made great progress in recommending policies for increasing and improving civic readiness, including the “More Time on Civics” bill (SB 216) which aims to increase class time for civics education in our public schools, particularly in the lower grades. I'm pleased to announce that Governor Sununu just signed the bill into law on August 1st!
I want to express my gratitude to our Board of Trustees for their vision and continued support for this critical work, and also to our dedicated staff and collaborators. As we forge ahead with the encouragement of donors like you, together we are fulfilling the NH Civics mission to develop, nurture, and maintain an informed, engaged, and civil New Hampshire citizenry.
Sincerely,
Mary Susan Leahy, Chair NH Civics Board of TrusteesAcross all ten counties, NH Civics continues to reach the people of New Hampshire through our youth programs, educator resources, advocacy, and public forums.

In 2022, we expanded the New Hampshire’s Kid Governor program reaching 89 classrooms in all 10 New Hampshire counties This program impacted 2,518 students, almost doubling the 2021 participation of 1,466 We saw 27 classes nominate a candidate for Kid Governor, an increase of ten nominations from the prior year. 2022 NH’s Kid Governor Charlotte Cotti had a very busy year and was able to fulfill her platform goals. In November, we announced our 2023 NH’s Kid Governor, Haydin Simmons of Plaistow, whose platform is ending poverty and hunger in the state. Haydin and her Executive Councilors are also working to bring awareness to the dangers of vaping and the importance of recycling.
By giving our fifth graders an opportunity to have agency and experience with civics, we are empowering them to be excited and involved constituents and public servants for generations to come
First
Lady of New HampshireFrom the original six schools and teachers, we now work with 25 teachers in 13 districts, including Groveton, Inter-Lakes, Littleton, Conway, Prospect Mountain, Pittsfield, Franklin, Weare, Henniker, Bow, ConVal, Washington, and Concord Hundreds of students across the state have completed Project Soapbox curriculum and have had the opportunity to deliver their speeches at the New Hampshire Mainstage Showcase. Almost 70 middle and high school students came to the first Annual NH Youth Voice Summit at Saint Anselm College on December 7, 2022.
Despite the slow recovery from the pandemic experienced by schools in 2022, Civics 603! was able to engage approximately 400 students in grades six through 12 in mock trial and mock appellate programs. Our programming included both the mock trials and appellate arguments at the New Hampshire Supreme Court and one-hour preparation sessions at the schools the week before. We reached 16 classes in Concord, Dover, Hampstead, Hooksett, Hopkinton, Hudson, Kingston, Meredith, Nashua, Rye, and Windham, and also added wonderful lawyers to our cadre of helpers.
The William W. Treat Lecture Series has reached thousands of participants over the years with noted civic leaders discussing key issues of the day. Last fall featured visits from then US Deputy Assistant Attorney General Maggie Goodlander and US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. In the year ahead, we will continue to bring public discourse with thoughtful, civics-minded community leaders to the forefront.
Now 50 members strong and growing, the NH Civic Learning Coalition has had a fruitful second year. The group's mission is to make recommendations in four critical areas to shape the future outlook of civic education in New Hampshire. These recommendations are in the areas of Equity in Civics Education, Professional Development and Media Literacy, Time Requirements for Civics Education in K-12 Public Schools, and Youth Voice. Representing educators, subject matter experts, heads of nonprofit organizations, attorneys, and other stakeholders, the Coalition was instrumental in the support and passage of SB 216, the "More Time on Civics" bill, that aims to increase time spent on civics instruction in New Hampshire public schools.
We are grateful for the support of these businesses and organizations.

The NH Civics Board of Trustees would like to express our sincere thanks to former Executive Director Martha Madsen, who announced her resignation in early 2023 An incorporator of NH Civics, Martha’s involvement spans a decade and includes roles as Trustee, President, and our first full-time Executive Director. During her tenure, NH Civics quadrupled in size and impact, won national grants from the Bezos Family Foundation and CivXNow, initiated the NH’s Kid Governor program (now in its fifth year), and brought Mikva Challenge to NH schools. Martha was also instrumental in initiating and building the NH Civic Learning Coalition, a diverse group that has worked to identify common ground on the critical work of civics education policy throughout New Hampshire.
"Martha Madsen has led the growth of NH Civics from a fledgling civics organization to a treasured resource for the many in the state who recognize that civics education is necessary for our constitutional democracy to thrive," said Mary Susan Leahy, Chair of NH Civics Board of Trustees "We are deeply appreciative of all the hard and excellent work Martha has done " We wish her all the best!
