Neighborhood Health Clinic’s mission is to deliver quality medical care to low-income, working but uninsured Collier County adults, using a professional volunteer staff and funded by private philanthropy.
SUSTAINABLE STEWARDSHIP
Over 23 years ago, Neighborhood Health Clinic took life from an idea shared by my parents, Dr. Bill and Nancy Lascheid, who believed that everyone, especially those in need, should have access to equitable healthcare, regardless of personal net worth. The fact that there are increasing numbers of working, uninsured Collier County residents who could qualify as Clinic patients demonstrates that the Clinic remains an essential community health resource for the underserved.
To meet this ever-present challenge over the years, we continue to grow stronger than ever, implementing my parents’ vision for a medical campus focused on providing quality healthcare to working, uninsured adults. With our family of professional medical volunteers numbering over 700 strong, we offer over 25 medical specialties on campus, so patients are able to complete their medical treatment in far less time than if having to travel to multiple appointments over a period of several days. The added bonus to this is they are far less likely to stray from diligent medical compliance with their health maintenance directives.
Despite the increasing numbers of underserved Collier County residents, the Clinic would not exist without the overwhelming support of our generous donors who provide funding, goods and services needed to keep us running strong. From those who have been with us from the beginning, to those offering more recent first gifts, your ongoing generosity is what has kept the Clinic not only running, but also thriving in successful pursuit of our mission. This could never have been possible without you, and I am personally grateful for your compassionate support of our patients in need.
Most sentimentally significant for me is having witnessed my parents see their dream for a comprehensive medical campus come to fulfillment. It was their vision, coupled with their diligent and purposeful drive, that has stewarded the Clinic to the success it is today … and their memory will sustain that success into the future, providing health equity to those who need it most.
Thank you,
Leslie Lascheid Chief Executive Officer

GREAT LEADERSHIP
It is often said, “Behind every great man, there is a strong woman,” and that is a perfect analogy for Dr. Bill and Nancy Lascheid. As individuals, they were as different as night and day. Bill was affable and soft-spoken, with a disarmingly seductive ability to get you to agree enthusiastically to do something you had never planned to do…. While Nancy would take charge with a whistle, clipboard and sharpened pencil in hand, having already detailed the job description and assignments. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with; together, they created Neighborhood Health Clinic.
Great leadership is not a learned trait; it comes from within, entailing vision, drive and goals. The Lascheids were intrinsic leaders, and as such, attracted those with similar dispositions. As a well-run Clinic with altruistic ideals, we have attracted to our board of directors proven icons of leadership from all sectors. They freely give their time and talent to the organization to ensure its success, both fiscally and operationally. Medical minds, who bring heart and give soul to help and heal those who hurt, as well as bards of business, whose acumen with finance provides a sound foundation upon which the Clinic operates: useful tools in the hands of CEO Leslie Lascheid who is blessed with laudable traits from both her parents.
Thanks to great shared leadership, we have continually expanded our reach to patients, our physical buildings and our patient services. Over 23 years ago, the Clinic rose from humble beginnings in a spare three room, 500 square-foot donated space, expanding to our current 32,000 square-foot, comprehensive medical campus. We are the medical home to patients who have nowhere else to go for healthcare services.
The ongoing generosity of neighbors near and far has been the primary source of funding for Clinic operations. We are proud to say we neither seek nor accept government funding. We rely on private philanthropy for all our funding. The generosity of Collier County neighbors helping neighbors in need defines why Naples is a great place to live.
Thank you,
John P. Cardillo, Esq. Chair, Board of Directors

BECOMING A PATIENT AT THE CLINIC
Neighborhood Health Clinic exists as the safety net of the safety nets for our low-income, working but uninsured patients; without our care it is unlikely they would find any other services available to them. A 2013 Johnson School of Business at Hodges University study identified that, if sick, potentially more than 50,000 Collier County residents could qualify for Clinic services.
Clinic patients:
• Must be uninsured with no access to insurance or government programs
• Earn at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
• Reside in Collier County
• Work 80 or more hours per month
• Are between the ages of 19 - 64
The typical patient visiting the Clinic is female, age 47, married with children. At present, over 50% of our patients suffer from 3 - 5 chronic diseases, relying on the Clinic for diagnosis, testing, education, treatment, medications with counseling, and long-term health management.
Adults interested in qualifying to be a patient may contact the Clinic at 239-529-2255
Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Patients at the Clinic:
• Are never billed for healthcare, medications, laboratory tests or any other services
• Take part in the Clinic’s many educational programs
• Typically donate $20 per month towards Clinic operating expenses
Patients both reside and work in every zip code in Collier County. They represent the backbone of the local service industry upon which we all rely for the quality of life enjoyed by many Naples residents and visitors.
Patients are employed as
Barbers
Car washers
Commercial cleaners
Dish washers
Dog groomers

COMPREHENSIVE CARE THROUGH EDUCATION
Education is extremely important in aiding patients in understanding their disease process. Often times, patients come to the Clinic on a number of medications and have no idea why they are taking them. To improve compliance, it is vital that patients understand their disease process and the importance of taking prescribed medications regularly. Patients sometimes think that they can stop taking their medications because now their blood pressure or their cholesterol levels have improved. They do not realize that they must continue to take their medications consistently to control their chronic disease. We teach diabetic patients the importance of checking their feet regularly to make sure they are not developing wounds. We educate them about the importance of getting their vision checked to ensure they are not developing issues with their vision because of their diabetes. Educating patients about their chronic illnesses allows them to take charge of their health.
In 2022
• 12,000 + patient visits
• $95,000 + in lab tests provided
• 141 Hepatitis C patients functionally cured since inception of the program
• $7 million in retail value of medications were dispensed
• 98% compliance of medications through strict counseling; national average is 52%
• 97% efficacy rate with a rigorous data collection as confirmed by Impact Genome

CLINIC VOLUNTEERS DONATE HOURS OF HOPE AND HEALING
Volunteers are indispensable to all aspects of the Clinic’s operation. We could not function without them. In 2022, our loyal family of volunteers provided over 36,000 hours of professional expertise, valued at more than $2.3 million. Without their diligence and capacity for caring, the Clinic would not be here today. We can never thank our volunteers enough for their dedication and service to our mission.

OVERALL HEALTHCARE
At the Clinic, we focus on comprehensive healthcare management, defined as treating the whole patient. This means we do not just focus on a patient’s clinical disease process like diabetes, but the impediments in a patient’s life that make it difficult to manage his/her diabetes. For instance, if a patient works nights, we have to ensure that their medication schedule aligns with his/her work schedule. We also try to teach patients that what they are eating is just as important as taking their medications regularly. We offer Diabetic Education both in a group environment as well as one on one counseling. In addition, our Healthy Lifestyles classes teach patients how to read food labels and prepare healthy, nutritious, delicious meals. By offering these types of classes, we are educating each patient that effective treatment of chronic disease requires more than just taking medications: it necessitates making lifestyle changes that will improve the patient’s overall health.
Education and research projects offered at the Clinic include
• Breast Health Awareness
• Colon Cancer Screening
• Diabetes self-management
• Healthy Lifestyles
• Hepatitis C Treatment and Support
• Pain Management
• Smoking Cessation
• Social Services

I NEVER IMAGINED A PLACE LIKE THIS EVEN EXISTED.
When Carlos first came to the Clinic, he could hardly make his way into the waiting room. Lean and tall, his broad smile and sparkling eyes barely concealed the intensity of pain he endures on a daily basis while working for a popular convenience store. Diagnosed with diabetes at age 16, Carlos was financially unable to afford the healthcare necessary to help him properly manage his disease. By the time a co-worker suggested he visit the Clinic, Carlos, now 29, had not had access to desperately needed medical treatment and insulin for over nine years, resulting in significant peripheral neuropathy with a number of very severe ulcers on his feet due to extensive damage to his blood circulation caused by his untreated diabetes.
Just three weeks after becoming a Clinic patient and starting a daily insulin routine, combined with many hours of having his wounds cleansed and dressed by Clinic volunteer Wound Care Specialists, Carlos is now very serious about leading a healthier life. He avoids the temptation of all the sugary drinks and junk food he routinely consumed in the past while on the job. He even chuckles that all his co-workers (one of who is his mother) keep an eye on him like family. However, because of the expert medical care he now receives, Carlos knows he is in good hands at the Clinic. Wound care is one of the 26 medical specialties housed in the Armstrong Medical Building and available to patients.
“The Clinic is great! I never imagined a place like this even existed. It’s amazing, and they treat people with such kindness and respect.” –Carlos

SUCCESS STORIES
“I am super thankful for all the kindness I received at the Clinic. Now I bring others here who need help, but have nowhere else to go. My gratitude is overwhelming.”
Luis Garcia is a true Clinic success story, and a prime example of why the Clinic exists.
Luis came to the Clinic at the recommendation of a neighbor, who is also a patient. Luis was suffering from extreme lower back pain radiating down his legs and causing debilitating sciatic nerve inflammation. His job working in shipping and receiving, lifting heavy boxes in and out of trucks all day for a local window manufacturer had become unbearable due to his painful condition. However, with children and a family to support, he could not take time off to rest.
Qualifying as a Clinic patient was the first step toward a happier life for Luis. Diagnosed and assessed by Clinic physician volunteers, he was referred to a specialist as part of his pain management treatment to help alleviate his nerve pain. He was also encouraged to seek a less physically demanding line of work because duties at his current job would continually aggravated his condition. Luis responded well to the care he received at the Clinic.
In addition to how respectfully Clinic staff and volunteers have always treated him, he is most grateful for the time when a volunteer cheerfully agreed to drive him home when his ride failed to show up. Luis is now an ardent patient advocate for the Clinic, even driving
friends to the Clinic so they are able to qualify for medical services and improve their lives… as he did.
Now working as an attendant for a prominent golf course in Naples, Luis’ animated smile is even more joyful. Not only has his health improved, but also he enjoys more gainful employment, and has health insurance now.
Sadly, but in a good way, after four years receiving care at the Clinic, Luis no longer qualifies as a Clinic patient. He has graduated to a better station in life, and that is something we can all smile about… Congratulations, Luis!
Jean Tibbs is a former Clinic patient, a sweet and genteel woman, and another Clinic success story.
Jean was in the neighborhood recently, and took the opportunity to stop by the Clinic to say hello. She was asking for “the mom and daughter” (Nancy and Leslie Lascheid), to say thank you to both “for saving her life.”
Jean recalled how the Clinic’s team of volunteers took such good care of her, and that she will “never be able to thank you all enough.” She thinks about it every day, recalling how Leslie took her to the ER one particularly bad day, and afterwards Nancy made her a barley soup. Then being in hospice at one point, she never thought she would recover. However, she says it is because of the hard work of volunteers and the loving care she received at the Clinic that she’s “still here today, living a good life.”
Jean was tearful throughout the entire conversation, but you could tell they were tears of happiness and hope. When we say that our patients give us purpose, this is what we mean… Thank you, Jean.

Neighborhood Bash ~ Party at the Clinic is our annual, casual evening under the stars where friends of the Clinic gather to enjoy delicious food truck fare, live music, game of chance and a mix of extra surprises every year. In 2022, it was bourbon tasting and axe throwing! A great time was had by all.
Thank you to these businesses who participated in the evening fun!
Carrabbas Italian Grill, Coleman, Hazzard, Taylor, Klaus, Doupé & Diaz, Everblades, Lilly Pullitzer, Natalie’s Skin Solutions, Ronto Group, Suncoast Beverages, The Local, Woodhouse Day Spa, and Whisky Park.
We are grateful to our community partners who made these events possible.
DeAngelis Diamond, Brandon Kirsch MD, Millennium Physician Group, Physicians Regional Healthcare System, Suncoast Beverage, Weldon and Rothman, William Raveis Real Estate, Woodruff Institute for Dermatology, and Life in Naples.
Join us this coming fall, and have a blast at the Bash on November 3, 2023
IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER...
Once again, in March 2023 the Celebration of Hope and Healing was a tremendous success, made even better by family and friends of the Clinic sharing great food, fine wine, and philanthropy! It was truly a celebration among Clinic supporters whose generous gifts to SaveA-Life provided funding for nearly one half of the Clinic's annual operating bud get... followed by dancing together joyfully, knowing that the Clinic will continue to thrive in its mission to deliver quality medical care to low-income, working but uninsured Collier County residents in need. We can't thank our event donors enough. It was truly a night to remember...
Thank you!
Not all gifts can be measured in dollar signs. Gifts to the Clinic come in a variety of forms that benefit our patients and Clinic operations. Thank you for your donation of goods and services that helps us care for our Neighbors in Need.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
Our recent expansion of the Clinic, with new facilities to house enhanced medicine, enables our volunteer medical specialists to treat most patients on site at the Clinic, saving them the time and travel required for referral appointments elsewhere. Of course, this is completely dependent on having medical professionals who generously volunteer their time and expertise to see Clinic patients. We could not do what we do without our volunteers!
Recently prompted by a few questions, Dr. Newell Falkinburg, a Clinic physician volunteer of long standing, agreed to sit with us for a chat…
In 1988, I moved to Florida from Roanoke, Virginia with a plan to retire, although I was still returning north one weekend a month to work for my old medical group. After four years of that, it became unfulfilling, and I finally retired completely.
Not surprisingly, shortly after retiring, I found that I missed medicine very much. Luckily, right around that time, I learned about the Clinic and met with Bill Lascheid. I began volunteering in June 2004, and have done so ever since. It has made my “retirement” perfect!
I continue to volunteer at the Clinic because I love medicine, and because there is a great need for medical care on the part of these patients, who are resource-poor, yet have serious medical needs. The Clinic helps fulfill the medical needs of these patients who would otherwise slip through the cracks in the “social safety net.” Whenever I meet newly retired physicians, I always urge them to consider volunteering at the Clinic. My old practice was and is predominantly a consulting nephrology practice with a very large portion of inpatients, often in intensive care units. The level of acute disease was much higher, certainly than that of patients routinely seen at the Clinic.
However, diabetes, in all its forms, is the most common and concerning sickness that I see among Clinic patients, with hypertension a distant second.
Being a doctor and practicing medicine on my own schedule, focused on helping patients who have nowhere else to go, is the most fulfilling aspect of volunteering at the Clinic. Patients here receive good medical care, including medication, health maintenance and appropriate education regarding their diseases.
In my spare time, I play golf, work out, read, and spend quality time with my wife… whether I want to or not!

OUR COMPASSIONATE PARTNERS
In 2022, the Clinic became a fully-fledged, comprehensive healthcare campus for our patients in need, but we still can’t do it all. To provide the most thorough medical care available, the Clinic partners with numerous physicians, dentists, nurses, professionals, and medical facilities who serve our patients off campus to deliver a wide variety of specialty professional services. Their willing collaboration of indispensable talent and resources allows the Clinic to offer our patients consistent access to the highest level of care available. We are grateful to all our professional service providers for their generous support of our mission. Thank you.

FUTURE-FOCUSED PHILANTHROPY
There are numerous ways to make a legacy gift to the Clinic, all of which will benefit our patients in the long run. Our Legacy Society recognizes donors who, during their lifetimes, selflessly commit to the future of the Neighborhood Health Clinic through designated estate planned gifts. Estate gifts made by our caring and generous Legacy Donors is a wise and thoughtful investment in the future of patient care and will help to ensure the longevity of the Clinic in perpetuity.

30 LEGACY GIVING IS
ZERO TO ZERO ANNUALLY
Annual fundraising for the Clinic is an essential process. The Clinic operates on a year-to-year annual budget. Our fiscal year begins October 1, ending September 30 the following year. October 1, we start at zero and raise the funds necessary to meet our operational needs through the year ($3 million in 2022). Each dollar donated is leveraged seven times in providing patient services. Our $3 million budget for FY2122 allowed us to deliver $21 million in patient services thanks to our volunteer professionals and community partners who donate their time, expertise, goods and services.
A summary of our annual Expenses and Revenue figures is represented in the graphic charts below. These figures illustrate the diligence of our fiscal leadership, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers. In 2022, we are very proud to say that 94 cents of every dollar donated went directly to support patient services.
OPERATING EXPENSES
Neighborhood Health Clinic is proud of maintaining the highest ranking attainable from the independent charity evaluators Charity Navigator and Candid (formerly known as Guidestar).
Asterisks denote a supporter who is deceased.
All numbers and lists reflected herein are based on the 2022 calendar year, with the exception of the Financial Report. Every effort has been made to accurately list each donor and volunteer. We sincerely apologize for any omissions or mistakes and ask to be advised of these errors.
