A VISION FOR A WHOLE COMMUNITY

Although they are no longer with us in life, the true heroes behind the story of Neighborhood Health Clinic are our co-founders, Dr. William P. Lascheid and Nancy Lascheid… my parents. From our modest beginnings in a timeworn storefront in 1999, to the 32,000 square foot, comprehensive medical campus providing over 25 medical specialties that you see today, the Clinic’s work continues to honor their vision by serving the medical needs of those in our community who have nowhere else to turn.

The Clinic would never have gotten o the ground without the willing contribution of time and expertise from our loyal corps of 700 medical and non-medical volunteers, our partners in patient services, as well as the generous support from our family of donors. Without you we would never be able to provide the broad scope of medical care so desperately needed by our chronically ill, uninsured patients. And for that, we remain forever grateful.

My parents believed very strongly that regardless of their appearance or social situation, or the specic problem that brought them to the Clinic seeking help, all patients must be treated with the same dignity and compassion as we would expect to be treated ourselves, without judgment. We owe them nothing less. Our patients are hardworking, residents of Collier County who choose work over welfare.

For over 24 years, my parents’ vision has been the driving force behind Neighborhood Health Clinic. It is a proven recipe for success that will propel our mission into the future.

CREATING A WHOLE HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT

In 1999, Neighborhood Health Clinic came to life through an altruistic vision shared by Dr. Bill and Nancy Lascheid.Upon imminent retirement in 1998, Dr. Bill Lascheid had a choice: return with his wife, Nancy, to their native Pennsylvania to golf with his pal, Arnold Palmer, or rededicate his and his wife’s professional medicaleortstohelpimprovethehealthcareoftheuninsuredworkingpoor–theideaoftheClinicwonout. It was quickly embraced by a dozen or so local professionalswhostepped up to volunteer, each handpicked by the Lascheids for their unique talents, and who subsequently helped carry the mission forward. I was lucky enough to be one of those professionals as its attorney.

The Clinic’s humble beginnings and long history are well-documented, and we remain a vitalresource providing uninterrupted care to the underserved in our community who receive the Hope and Healing they desperately need. Yes, we have expanded into a 32,000 square foot, comprehensivemedical campus, fundedentirelybyprivatephilanthropy,withoutincurringanydebt,andwithownershipofpropertyandall buildings, all accomplished without any government funding. We are very proud of these facts.

By collaborating with a network of community partners, the Clinic helps guide uninsured patients away from usuallyinundatedlocalhospitalemergencyservicestoourClinicwherewecanprovideongoingprimarycare to fully address their critical needs and educate them in ways to manage their chronic illnesses to prevent futureemergencies. In 2023, we had over 12,000 patient visits at the Clinic.

How do we do this? With a sta of volunteer professionals whose calling in life is to help their less fortunate neighbors regainhealth and quality of life. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Clinic; we would not exist without them. Our sta of dedicated, licensed medical professionals volunteer their expertise to deliver all services to patients under protection and strict guidelines of Florida’s Sovereign Immunity protection. Once again, the vision -and perseverance- of Dr. Bill and Nancy Lascheid were instrumental in the successful introduction of Sovereign Immunity law in Florida. For 12 years, withfocused determination, they brought their case repeatedly before State legislators in Tallahassee. Finally, with successful representation by (then) Senator Burt Saunders, they were nallyable to pave a pathway for over 200 other free clinics to become establishedinFloridaunderSovereignImmunity–morenowthaninanyotherstateintheU.S.

We are much more than just a free clinic. Through the vision, dedication, and hard work of the Lascheids, we are a safety net and leading advocate for those in our community who fall through the cracks in the healthcare system. To address the problems faced by underserved patients within the medical system, we created solutions… and wewill continue to do so for as long as there is a need, thanks to you!

CLOSE  UP LOOK INTO ONE PATIENT’S YEAROFMANAGEDCARE

Through the supportof more than 700 dedicated volunteers, and tremendous generosity of loyal donors, the Clinic provides the highest caliber of medical care to qualied patients, many of whom suer from 3 – 5 chronic diseases. Maintaining optimal health for a patient suering with acute andchronic conditions requires careful monitoring with diligent awareness of potential complications.

State-of-the-art testing, such as our newly acquired equipment for the ABI (ankle-brachial index) exam provides physicians with an assessment of peripheral vascular diseaseto determine whether additional testing is required.

Over the course of a year, one Clinic patient living with both diabetes and high cholesterol received the standard quality primary care, medications and counseling experienced by all patients, as well as these specialized procedures.

Wrapping up the year, the physician attending the patient’s nal exam stated, “I challenge you to nd ANY clinic in the country that provides this level of outstanding care! We have the BEST clinic around!”

CLINIC VOLUNTEERS ARE THE SOURCE OF HOPE AND HEALING

We could not function without our Volunteers. They are truly indispensable to all aspects of the Clinic’s operation. In 2023, our loyal family of volunteers provided nearly 39,000 hours of their time and expertise, valued at morethan $2.3 million in patient services. We can never thank our volunteers enough for their dedication and service to our mission. Without their tireless diligence and capacity for caring, many Clinic patients would not be here today. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

J. A. HADLEY MD

Dr. James A. Hadley is one of the Clinic’s newer volunteer medical professionals, beginning in June of 2023. In addition to primary care, Dr. Hadley’s expertise in Otorhinolaryngology, better known as ENT (Ears, Nose & Throat) medicine, makes him a welcome asset to the Clinic’s expansion of medical specialists who treat patients with very specic aictions.

Dr. Hadley was referred to the Clinic by other volunteer clinicians to help our patients. With his many years of specialty experience, Dr. Hadley enjoys the opportunity to help those patients who require medical management.

Another reason Dr. Hadley enjoys volunteering at the Clinic is the help provided to him by volunteer assistants. He no longer faces what he calls “the drudgery” of excessive amounts of paperwork needed to complete the examination history and assessment of patients. He is also able to spend more time with each patient, rather than having to rush through appointments to accommodate patients waiting in queue. Many younger volunteer medical assistants at the Clinic are working toward careers in medicine, allowing Dr. Hadley to utilize his long history of teaching students and sharing knowledge with his assistants, providing experience that will also help ensure delivery of quality medical care to Clinic patients.

Among the most challenging illnesses Dr. Hadley sees in Clinic patients is in critical management of insulindependent diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure). Dr. Hadley recognizes the teamwork that volunteer nursing and clinical sta add to the workday, appreciating theirable assistance in the competent management of patient needs.

In addition to knowing that he is helping to save the lives of chronically ill patients who have no other options for medical care, Dr. Hadley is especially appreciative of the acknowledgement he receives from friends and colleagues who respect him and Clinic for the essential services provided to the community. He hopes to encourage friends to volunteer as well.

In describing the Clinic’s role in the community, Dr. Hadley states, “It is important to provide the necessary complement of medical care to individuals who can access the Clinic for their health needs when they cannot aord other medical care providers. And the Clinic provides a safe refuge for patients needing that care.”

When he’s not delivering expert medical care to patients in need, Dr. Hadley spends his time exercising, reading, and enjoying family events.

Thank you, Dr. Hadley, and all our volunteers, for taking time to give backto the community we all share. You are real heroes!

CELEBRATING DEDICATION

We are so grateful to all our friends and Clinic family who joined the festivities thisyearatourannualfundraiserthat provides the Clinic with the essential funding needed to support patient services. This event has undergone several transformationsthrough the years, currently known as the Celebration of Hope and Healing, and now hosted on the Clinic campus, featuring fabulous live music, a delicious meal, and generous philanthropy. This year proved to be as spectacular as past events, with our loyal emcee, Kellie Burns, leading the evening’s successful Save-A-Lifeprogramtosetanewrecord.

One of the highlights of the Celebration of Hope and Healing included announcing thisyear’srecipientoftheDr.William P. Lascheid Founders Award: John P. Cardillo, Esq. John was among the very rst volunteers to step up to help launch the Clinic in its edgling stage. As such, John was recognized for exemplifying the vision, leadership, and mission of Dr. Lascheid, and shares this honor with previous awardees: Dr. Paul Jones, Dr. George Ferguson, and the late Dr. E. Sean Kelley. We commend John for embracing the initial challenge and remaining at the sideofDr.BillandNancyLascheidfrom the early planning meetings to the present day and, we expect, well into the future.

EDUCATIONATTHECLINIC

The Van Domelen Education and Wellness Building has provided space for a variety of instructional oerings for Clinic patients. The Healthy Lifestyles course now has access to a comprehensive teaching kitchen to learn culturally specic, healthy meals that patients can make at home with ingredientpackages they take home. The Group Quit course provided by Tobacco Free Florida, the only course open to the public, has an entire classroom for classes. Additionally, a positive response to the pandemic was the new Mood and Movement class proving the value of exercise for your overall health.

In addition to these classes, Clinic volunteers identied a class that would add yet another level to the instructional opportunities oered to patients: Improve Your English. Spanish-speaking patients improve and expand their conversational capabilities, which boosts their overall condence and interactions at work and in the community. Volunteers Kitty Sachs and Barbara “Boo” Mortenson created a weekly course delivered in 8-week sessions with the exibility to focus on topics specic to the students.

Much of the conversations involve work-related language improvement that several of the students rely upon as they seek to advance their employment opportunities. At the beginning of 2024, by popular demand a second course, with more volunteers supporting the new program, have been added. The sky is the limit with this course.
