Chris shares his personal story to illustrate that the effort is to learn, grow, and dream in pursuit of fulfillment, happiness, and community He teaches the 4 S’s of Resilience; questions that we can ask ourselves when confronting a difficult situation:
Self-Am I a victim or a survivor? Situation-Is it overwhelming or a challenge? Support-Am I alone or part of a team? Strategies-Do I have one or many?
Biography:
Chris Waddell’s 12 Paralympic skiing medals are more than any man in US history. He’s a Hall of Famer, a World Champion in wheelchair track, and the first “nearly unassisted” paraplegic to summit 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. His ski popped off while competing in college, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Chris monoskied 362 days later and soon became the fastest in the world. The Dalai Lama honored him as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion,” Skiing Magazine dubbed him one of 25 Greatest Skiers in North America and People Magazine named him one of “The 50 Most Beautiful People.”

When I took over leadership of this school in 2020, we embarked on a multi-year process to create a meaningful mission and vision that apply to all that we do This process included stakeholders from the staff, students, community, and families In this session, I will walk participants through what we did, the intentions from the outset, the lessons learned, and the flexibility needed to complete the process Further, I will discuss what happens after creation to make sure that these are living statements used to guide your school into the future

This session will take a deep dive into how standards-based grading practices support competency based learning systems at all levels K-12 Participants will advance their understanding of the latest researched-based competency based grading and reporting practices, identify the flaws of traditional grading, identify opportunities to promote learning and equity through grading and reporting, and develop school-specific plans for next steps with grading for learning and equity

Supporting all students. It’s what NH School Leaders do. Chris Erchull, Attorney GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) will share legislative updates as well as litigation on topics affecting LGBTQ+ students These topics include supporting students with the appropriate usage of names and pronouns and maintaining student privacy around this issue, updates on policy surrounding student use of bathrooms and locker rooms, providing access to sex-separated programs including school sports, efforts to remove books and other materials from classrooms and libraries, and bullying and harassment issues
Chris will invite a panel of experts to offer a variety of perspectives on these topics as well as to discuss the questions: How do school leaders navigate the privacy of students who are not yet ready to disclose information to their parents and families, especially if they have asked for support from school staff? How do school leaders continue to create school climates that are accepting of all students even when families and communities may be divided? How do school leaders navigate a mental health crisis disproportionately impacting LGBTQ+ youth, an increasingly heated political climate, mounting pressure from lawmakers and school boards, and the imperative to work in partnership with parents for the best interests of students?
