NGOC BICH DO PORTFOLIO

Hello to you My name is Ngoc Bich Do but you can call me Rubi. I am going to graduate with a Master Degree in Architecture in May 2016 from Drury University, Springfield, Missouri. I grew up in a small town in Vietnam. With an unwavering passion, and humbling manner, I have expanded my world to working and studying in 4 different continents, meeting great people, and seeing intriguing monuments. I am ready now to use my academic training to serve people and make a difference in the lives of clients and communities I work with. Architecture is not only about hard work, but about how to keep excitement alive and flowing. I found it tremendously helpful to keep close connections with knowledgeable professors, inspiring architects, and especially to secure a corner in the library where I can pull all the books out and be consumed! As a result, I am looking to work for a firm that I can support through my unique skill set and further learn from their design process. It has been a great pleasure to put together these works from my yearns in school, professional practice, and my personal research. I really appreciate your time and interest in reviewing my work and discovering ways I can help support your practice.

SPRINGFIELD SYNAGOGUE - Springfield, MO Academic Work - Spring 2015

Gravitational field affects physical objects around it yet remains anonymous, invisible! However, without those objects, the force cannot manifest itself to the world and there would be no knowledge about their incredible abilities. The power of God is similar to this force. The concept of this synagogue is therefore to intertwine knowledge and the community together to bring about the belief of God. It is symbolized by the education wing and the community wing which support the sanctuary.

ROUTE 66 MUSEUM - Springfield, MO Academic Work - Fall 2013

ENERGY HIGH MED IUM LOW

This Museum is located on Route 66 at the exit to the West of Springfield, Missouri. Route 66 which used to be the most well known heritage of America is now slowly fading into the history. In order to simulate that process, the concept of this museum is to organize activities and spaces according to the decelerating level of energy.

When one first walks in, he is excited with the museum experience, then comes the medium part when he strolls through the exhibition area. Finally, the end of the museum is office space where people are at rest most of the time. The museum is made out of layers of activities with similar energy level. That is how the road is built up over time_ by layering of material and energy. The

building

is

integrated

into the site by creating the illusion that the old route 66 is turning into the museum with great energy at first, then slowly decelerates and becomes static. This image will signify the museum’s ability to glorify route 66 and revives it in people’s memory and acknowledge

younger

generation

about this legend.

8

ROUTE 66 MUSEUM - Springfield, MO Academic Work - Fall 2013

The museum also include a drive in theater to the south of it which will serve families at night just like old days. This space also becomes the parking area for people who visit the museum. However, staff are provided with special parking locations which are convenient for their working experience and provide access to the building even when the museum exhibition is closed to the public. From outside, the building looks like a sculptural version of the road. The interior of the museum is very open which resembles the car’s. Nonetheless, at the end, the offices have normative square windows for ease of operating and to differentiate the fluid form flowing energy and the static state- standing energy.

AIGINA CULTURAL WALK - Aigina , Greece Study Abroad Work - Fall 2014

The

Aigina

Cultural

Walk

is

designed to promote public spaces next to historic fabric and heritage structures in an urban context. In order to accomplish this, this project’s Loop concept uses the path of the Walk to channel the visitors as waves of energy penetrating deep into the town in order to revitalize hidden monuments and to excite neighborhoods. The Walk is blended with the urban fabric so as to encourage interaction between locals and visitors in a way that enriches the experience of both parties. Thus, the visitors gain knowledge about the island’s daily lived experiences, instead of seeing only a tourist side of it. They can be led directly to the destinations or guided around to explore. The Walk also supports local business by pushing visitors past the waterfront, weaving them into and through more remote parts of the city.

that

draws people there. The radial development also incorporates and reflects existing edges of the surrounding context. Ground cover materials change from man-made to natural, fulfilling different purposes in different spaces. Urban furniture design on the site is inspired by the tower’s shape, materials and abstract/ formal ideas.

This is a building housing an antique tractor for exhibition purpose. The concept is to reserve the relationship between the ground surface, the human and the tractor. The design dignifies the tractor by raising it up in the air and enclosed it with a glass case. The path through the site is carefully lay out so that people’s movement direction and viewing angle will be controlled and focus on the object of display. During the time on site, the visitor will experience not only the tractor’s exhibition but also the different types of spaces including outside, enclosed, partially enclosed, partially outside, and they can also view the tractor from right below due to the glass encasement and the path leading to the entry.

PHYSICAL LINK

to

The Loop & Hub is derived from the connective presence of the Skywalk network as the Skywalk bridges create the Loop above the intersection of 7th Street and Locust Street. This Loop encloses a unique spatial environment within its boundaries that becomes the Hub of the proposed social activity. As this condition exists numerous times within the urban fabric, additional Hubs can be connected to their respective Loops, creating a greater impact on the urban fabric of downtown. In addition to acting as a physical linkage between the levels of pedestrian circulation, the desire of the Loop & Hub is to draw upon the linear tension between the State Capitol Building and the John & Mary Pappa John Sculpture Park. As these various sites fall squarely on the axis that connects these two destinations, the proposal serves the action of placemaking as it develops another node of activity along an existing urban axis.

ENGAGEMENT WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

This proposal suggests a strong adjustment to the traffic lanes on Locust Street as the vehicular circulation is limited to a one way bus lane and a bicycle lane. Optional seating will be provided throughout the Hub for use by pedestrians and motorists. Due to the connection created in the Loop & Hub between the Skywalk network and the street, pedestrian circulation can now flow freely between two environmentally friendly forms of transportation throughout the downtown district.

SOLAR DECATHLON - Irvine, CA Academic Work - Fall 2013

Drury University’s schematic design for the Solar Decathlon Competition is given to be developed. This is a storm shelter that demonstrates the benefits, afford-ability and availability of renewable energy. It is called ShelteR3, which is based on three R’s: respond, recover and resist. Unfortunately, the later stage of this project is carried out when I was in my semester abroad. However, my idea of pivoting green wall that lets light in and provides vegetables was used and further integrated into a successful product. The amazing team work of Drury has brought back the 7th place in the Solar Decathlon Competition in 2015.

and the government due to the eviction of house dwellers in 1970s for development. This affordable housing is based on the concept of bridging community by building smaller ethnic community that will then be connected in bigger community space which may eventually heal the wound. The housing prototypes are designed for unique community for identity and bonding.

DINH QUANG TEMPLE - Bihar, India

KITCHEN

GARAGE LIBRARY This Mahayana temple is the work I did for the Head Monk of a Vietnamese group in Bihar, India in my second year of college. He needed an architect but only have enough budget for an engineer and construction manager. Therefore I volunteer to work with him. It was my first time having a client and all the communication was through emails, phone calls and photos. However, after a year of work, the Monk and the community were very pleased with this design. The construction started in September 2014.

The land around is very empty but the temple is restricted in both ground plan and height. Therefore the building is stacked and assignable area was optimized.

The pond located in front of the lobby at the north is to cool down the air. There are 2 sets of stairs for monks and visitors who only interact in the lobby or the sanctuary (bottom and top floor). They have living quarters on different levels and a library underground. Fengshui was extensively integrated into this design which also guided my decision or at time, constrained and framed my thoughts.

During this time, I research deep into the traditional Vietnamese temple typology, how to blend it in the context and I also studied construction method of houses, weather, culture and conditions of India, especially this Bihar area. One interesting fact is that in temple configuration, the design should guide the flow of energy or people around a center point in a clockwise manner, this follow the universe’s rule of operation like the constellation, chakra and other ancient discoveries. Therefore, the main hall and all circulation

PRIMROSE SENIOR CENTER- Springfield, MO Professional Work at Bates - Fall 2015

The task was to design a rehabilitation therapy garden next to the entrance of a senior center. After a few sketches for ideas, I come to present it to the main architect- Mark Tuttle. For courtyards and gardens in this project, Mark consults with a team of landscape architects. They review my sketches, then Mark will make suggestion and sketch his own ideas (the left and upper right). I model it in Revit then sketch over and repeat the process until the desired solution is reached. The model provides accuracy and the sketches offer emotions.
