DRURY UNIVERSITY SUMMER 2015

ROUTE 66 MUSEUM

This Museum is located on Route 66 at the exit to the West of Springfield, Missouri. Route 66 which used to be the most wellknown heritage of America is now slowly fading into the history. In order to simulate that process, this museum is organized in the order of energy level.

When one first walks in, he is excited with the museum experience, then comes the medium part when he strolls through the exhibition area. Finally, the end of the museum is office space where people are at rest most of the time. The museum is made out of layers of activities with similar energy level. That is how the road is built up over time_ by layiering of material and energy.

The building is integrated into the site by creating the illusion that the old route 66 is turning into the museum with great energy at first, then slowly decellerates and becomes static. This image will signify the museum’s ability to glorify route 66 and revives it in people’s memery and acknowledge younger generation about this legend. FALL 2013

MISSOURI HOTEL

The Missouri Hotel used to be a famous hotel of Springfield Missouri until 1989. It then was turned into a homeles shelter. The Missouri Hotel keeps its name however, much work needed to be done for it to be fully functional and provide comfortable shelter for the people who are in need around this area.

?

The concept of this homeless shelter is to emphasize the role of communal living experience in getting homeless people back to the society. The natural light is used to lead people into and upto those spaces.

RIPLEY TRAIN STATION

This train station for Ripley Tennessee is a converging point of many kinds of transportation which is the result of looking into the future’s need for sustainable ways to travel around. The concept is the famous Ripley’s tomato slides. The form allows the wood surface to continuously flow from roof, to wall to floor and back to roof. It is motion in a frozen moment.

TRACTOR HOUSE

The project is about creating a house for exhibiting an antique tractor in Springfield Missouri. This design reverses the relationship between human, the tractor and the ground surface. The juxtaposition dignifies the object of display which is raised up in the air while we walk around appreciating.

The tractor house creates 3 types of spacial experiences for the visitors which are fully enclosed, partially enclosed and fully open to air. The path that people have to circulate proide them different viewing opportunities at various angle and portion. The design also controls the direction of people;s movement and focus their attention on the displayed tractor.

DINH QUANG TEMPLE

This Mahayana temple is the work I did for the Chief Monk of a Vietnamese group in Bihar, India. He needed an architect but only have enough budget for an engineer. Therefore I volunteer to work with him. It was my first time having a client and all the communication was through emails and photos. However, after a year of work, the Monk and the community were very pleased with this design. The construction started in September 2014. The land around is very empty but the temple is restricted in both ground plan and height. Therefore the building is stacked and assignable areas are optimized. The pond located in front of the lobby at the north is to cool down the air. There are 2 sets of stairs for men and women who only interact in the lobby or the sanctuary (bottom and top floor). They have living quarters on different levels and a library underground. Fengshui was extensively integrated into this design which also guided my decision or at time constrain and frame my thoughts.

NCCA MUSEUM

“The National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) in Moscow is a museum, exhibition and research organization which aims its efforts at the development of contemporary Russian art within the context of the global art process.

The NCCA will promote art through tightening the connection between it and everyday life. Incorporate the park with the museum and blurring the distinction between the general public and the visitor make the building become more open and invite people to come back multiple times.

MODELLING - BIM

PUZZLE PARK is the renovation design of a park in downtown Springfield, MO. Its existence makes the connection between North and South sides of the city by resembling the dominants features of both area- the cubist spirit. The park is arranged according age groups. The circulation is smooth and encourages people to walk through the park to engage more activities for this important piece of architecture in downtown.

Building information modeling programs like Revit, Rhino -Grasshopper defenition open up a whole new world of possibilities for me to explore form and fabrication methods. These technology is aided greatly by the integration of CNC machine, 3D printer and Laser Cutter. SPRING 2013- SPRING 2015
