Tapas originate from Spain. They are small plates of food usually served with drinks. In Andalucia, where we recently had a holiday, tapas are still served free with drinks! Why not throw a tapas night? Green olives and good bread are a must, along with a few other dishes. Here are some of my favourites. Oh and remember Patatas Bravas with the sangria and cerveza.....

Hot, Hot, Hot Garlic Prawns Chorizo & Spicy 380g uncooked king prawns Tomato Sauce

1kg baby new potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp paprika 170g chorizo - sliced for the sauce 1 medium onion - chopped 400g tin tomatoes 2 cloves garlic - chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 1 red chilli - chopped 1 tbsp tomato puree salt & pepper white wine/sherry (optional) method

Heat oven to 200°C. Boil potatoes in a large pan of salted water until cooked. Drain & place in a roasting tin. Crush slightly so they crack open. Toss in olive oil, sprinkle with paprika and bake until they have crispy edges (about 25 mins). Meanwhile, fry the chorizo slices in a non stick pan til they go crisp. Drain off some oil and mix in with crispy potatoes.

For the sauce, heat oil in a small pan, gently cook the onion & garlic til soft. Careful not to burn. Add chilli & tomato puree & cook for 2 mins. Add splash of wine & boil til reduced. Add tomatoes, bring to boil then simmer gently til reduced to thick sauce (30 mins). Liquidise to a smooth sauce. Serve sauce on top of spuds or in a separate jug. (serves 6-8)

2 tbsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic -thinly sliced 1 - 2 red chillies - finely sliced 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tbsp parsley - chopped

method

Heat oil in a pan and gently cook the garlic and chilli slices for a few minutes. Add prawns to the pan and cook until they turn pink. Add the sweet chilli sauce. Mix well and serve sprinked with parsley.

Baked Tortilla Squares

2 tbsp olive oil 2 med onions - thinly sliced 1 potato (250g) - thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic - crushed 6 large eggs 2 tbsp parsley - chopped salt & pepper method

Heat oven to 200°C. In a large non-stick frying pan gently fry the onion, potato & garlic until they are cooked. This may take quite a while so be careful not to burn. Cool the mixture down.

Break eggs into a bowl, add parsley and the cooled potato & onion mixture. Season really well then tip into a well oiled 20cm square non-stick baking tin. Bake for 20 mins or until cooked and browned on top. Tip out of tin and cut into squares. (makes 16)

Why should I consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.

People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves.

Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.

This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.

Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you

will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.

If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)

Summer Update

This year hasn’t offered the best of summers, but members of the Nottingham Centre have been making the most of it. Excursions have included Ely Cathedral, Dudley and Moseley Old Hall, and Scampton Hall and Gardens. Future trips include Ickworth in August and Burton Constable in September.

Members of the Garden Group had a great day out at RHS Harlow Carr, the most northerly RHS garden, near Harrogate, and in July visited the St. Ann’s Allotments in Nottingham.

The Local and Family History Group also offers a variety of excursions throughout the year, and, in common with all Nottingham Centre outings, there is usually considerable emphasis placed on food (coffee breaks, lunch breaks, WI teas) so no one is likely to faint from lack of nourishment.

Like walking? Various walks are arranged throughout the summer, with a minibus providing transport to exotic locations further afield.

The Centre also offers short break holidays.

The October holiday includes Covent Garden, a backstage tour, The Musical Museum and Greenwich – there’s a lot to look forward to!

The winter programme of talks resumes at the Mechanics in September, starting on Thursday 12th with a talk at 2.15pm by Stephen Flinders: ‘Stanton – Gone but not Forgotten.’

This will be followed on Thursday 26th at 7.30pm by a talk by Peter Hammond: ‘So you Think You Know Nottingham, (pt 2).’

Garden Delights Dover Beck Flower Club

The Dover Beck Flower Club have had an exciting few weeks! First they had a massively successful evening with NAFAS national demonstrator Bill Dixon and this was followed up by a garden evening in the grounds of Mapperley Old Hall. This took place at the garden of one of the committee members and as you can see was very much enjoyed. The delicious supper was provided by Judith Naylor and then members were able to wander around to view the delightful gardens of Mapperley Old Hall.

There is no meeting in August but the autumn programme begins in September with Pat Billing “Angles and Tangles” on Thursday September 19th.

All are welcome, doors open at 7pm and visitors pay £5. After the demonstration there will be a social time, a chance to partake of tea and a cake in aid of Macmillan before the arrangements are raffled off. looking good, feeling great Cadets from 2418 (Sherwood) Sqn brave a bald head in aid of charity The OC Flt Lt Bates, Office Cadet Kahla and cadets from 2418 (Sherwood) Sqn have worked immensely hard to set up and run a charity fundraiser to raise money for CLIC Sargent the charity for children and young people with cancer. The cadets were motivated to hold the event following the regrettable loss of a school friend to cancer.

The cadets chose CLIC Sargent as it was this charity that had provided support for their friend and his family during his illness.

CLIC Sargent provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help people cope with cancer and get the most out of life. They also provide support to the family.

Three cadets from 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron plus another friend had their heads shaved to raise money for the charity as part of the fundraiser event. There were some very worried faces from girlfriends and family as the barber made his way down the line, followed by a lot of head rubbing and shocked faces!

Overall the four raised around ÂŁ400 for the charity, a total they should all be very proud of!

41st Annual Show 10th & 11th August National Armed Forces Day Opening Ceremony Flt Sgt Grant of 2418 (Sherwood) Sqn was extremely fortunate to be part of Nottingham’s Armed Forces Day opening ceremony.

One of six cadets, Flt Sgt Grant was chosen to take part in the flag raising ceremony to mark the start of National Armed Forces week.

During the ceremony, four service personnel parachuted into Wollaton Park and brought the flag up the hill.

It was then passed from the current service to the past (veterans) who had a representative from each force, then to the cadets, the future of the forces.

The Grand Central Chorus Foreign travel and an invitation to sing.

The Chorus flew off to Canada on the 1st July for the long awaited International Convention being held in Toronto. The Chorus represented the British Barbershop Association and competed against the best Barbershop Choruses in the world.

‘The standard in North America is very high with the top choruses scoring over 95%, a standard which has never been reached by any UK chorus.’ says Zac Booles Chorus Director. ‘We are competing against the best in the world and hope to make everyone back home proud.’

On their return the Chorus members invite you to join them at an Open Evening on Wednesday, 4th September, 2013, to hear them sing the competition songs and to join them on the risers and learn the basics of four part harmony in the Barbershop style. It will be held at the usual rehearsal venue, Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15pm. The Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass band had the privilege to play at the Armed Forces Day event that was held at Bridgford Park, West Bridgford.

The concert that was part of a full day of entertainment by various local groups and entertainers with a theme of “Proms in the Park”. The band, conducted by Musical Director Paul Whyley and wearing their new uniforms for the first time in public, were on top form and entertained a large audience with a wide selection of music. This event starts a very busy summer season for the band who are trying to raise funds for their trip to Cheltenham where they will play as the Midlands third section champions in the national finals against other regional champions from across the country. A band spokesman said, “It is a fine balance to raise the substantial funds for this prestigious contest while continuing to supporting the community with their local events.”

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Money

We all know there’s nothing worse than making plans with friends and being forced to cancel them because our pockets are empty. I’m personally fed up of hearing my parents tell me that “money doesn’t Ella Higginbotham aged 15 grow on trees” (what a silly saying, it’s a bit obvious isn’t it!) when the majority of us under 16s can’t get jobs, but we really don’t want to miss out on a social life: we can’t win!

When our purses are sparse there are just a few little things we can do to make sure we aren’t completely broke: 1) Get a Terramundi money pot- its saves money and looks pretty, genius!

It’s different because what you put in you can’t get out until it’s full up and ready to be smashed. So you know that random change lying in your jean pocket or in the bottom of your bag? just chuck it into the terramundi and before you know it it’s time to smash it and you have a whole load of cash. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the hammer and whacking it open; it’s a lot of fun or can act as an excellent stress release which is perfect for all our teenage traumas!

2) Don’t buy food and drink-starve! No but seriously if you’re going for a day out in town or in the park don’t waste money on buying food, just take it with you. Wrap up a sandwich at home because it’s just as yummy and completely free!

3) Do little jobs- you’ve got to break the teen catchphrase of “can’t be bothered” (however heart-breaking it may be) and don’t be lazy, it only takes ten minutes to wash some pots or iron a few pairs of jeans. Ask your parents for just 50p every now and then by helping around the house and it will all add up. Oh and don’t forget the puppy dog eyes if you’re really desperate.

4) Compare where you shop- don’t buy the first thing you see. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere for a much better price. Be patient and window shop for a bit until you find the ideal, cheap purchase.

5) Babysit- it’s a doddle (Hopefully!) You get paid to spend your evening watching TV whilst the kids are in bed, plus everyone tells you to help yourself so that means free food! You can’t go wrong! You or your parents must know families with young kids so ask around and do a good job of it; that way word gets around and you will eventually have loads of Next business.

It’s the little things that you can do to make sure you’ve always got some money spare to do the things that you want to do.

I’ve had a busy start since joining the neighbourhood policing team for Sherwood and Hyson Green in May but I am settling in and enjoying my new role.

I was delighted to be invited to the Sherwood and Mapperley Park Neighbourhood Watch meeting on 26 June 2013, which I attended with Sergeant Nick Wealthall. We listened to feedback from the public and as a result are working to find a way to get swift and accurate information out to you in the community. We hope to do this via the Neighbourhood Alert and the Neighbourhood Watch coordinators.

During the meeting I attempted to clarify the difference between the uniforms and powers of the officers in my team.

A Police Officer wears a black t-shirt with black epaulettes bearing the officers name and identity number.

Men wear the traditional style helmets and women wear bowler style hats with black and white chequered banding.

A Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) wears a blue t-shirt and blue epaulettes with name, number and ‘Police Community Support Officer’ embroidered across them.

Women will again wear bowler style hats with banding and men wear flat caps with blue/white chequered bands.

A Community Protection Officer (CPO) wears a white shirt with grey epaulettes with number and Nottingham City Council badge.

CPOs also wear high vis yellow stab vests. Men wear flat caps with grey and white chequered band and women wear bowler style hats with banding.

All officers’ outer garments (stab vests and jackets) have their titles clearly displayed on the back and front.

The primary role of a PCSO is visibility and engagement with the community. In brief they have powers to request names and addresses, make arrests, and take details of low level crimes and deal with Antisocial Behaviour and neighbourhood disputes.

Their primary role is environmental crime (e.g. littering, dog fouling, noise complaints) but they also work alongside our officers to resolve Antisocial Behaviour issues in the neighbourhoods.
