kids Volunteers Urgently Needed 111th Sherwood Scouts urgently needs to recruit more volunteers to lead or assist with our Beaver, Cub and Scout troops.

Gedling Southbank Sponsor Support

We meet at Sherwood Methodist Church on the corner of Mansfield Road/Devon Drive. • Beavers (6-8 years) meet Tuesdays at 6-7pm • Cubs (8-10 years) meet Tuesdays 6.458.15pm • Scouts (10-14.5 years) meet Mondays, 7.30-9pm. Experienced leaders run these groups but we’re keen to recruit additional volunteers to ensure a good balance of adults to young people, and to strengthen our overall team. We offer: • fun and satisfaction from enriching local kids’ lives • good support from current, experienced leaders in shaping and running the groups • free online training to develop skills recognised by employers • free DBS check What we’re looking for: • regular commitment to lead/assist at weekly sessions during school terms • enthusiasm to encourage young people through a range of activity badges This is a great opportunity for young people, adults, working professionals and recent retirees. It's fun, inspiring and a valuable way for a wide range of people to bring their time and skills to benefit the wider community. Please do contact me to get involved, discuss in more detail and/or arrange a visit to observe a session. GSB Athletic U11 (18/19) have had a great year. They started the season as Division 1 Champions, have seen a player signed to Derby County and had continued support from their home sponsor Gedling & District Roundtable. By continually putting in the hard work and effort they have gained a new away sponsorship, TB Sport. Both sponsors have credited the boys on the effort they put into improving their game and skills by committing to weekly SAQ training and also the same level of effort they put into supporting local good causes and charities such as “When You Wish Upon A Star”. The sponsors appreciate these qualities in the boys and have shown their support to the team by providing winter coats, summer training equipment and constant support when the team are doing their charity fund raising. Team sponsors are really valuable and it would be great if lots more businesses could take the time to show their support to local teams and see the benefits of how a little bit of encouragement can really boost a child’s confidence and progression in all aspects of life and wellbeing.

BIG HEARTED

RESTAURANTEUR RECOGNISED Restaurateur John Molnar – from the Cod’s Scallops in Carrington, Bramcote and Long Eaton and the Nelson in Burton Joyce - has been recognised for his support and great work in the local community - including fundraising and supporting local groups. His achievements

include raising an amazing £60,000 for Maggie's – over the last three years – based at the City Hospital Maggie’s offers professional support to people with cancer and their loved ones. John was presented with the Special Recognition Award, sponsored by Eden PR, at the annual Nottingham Restaurant & Bar Awards - a celebration of the food and drink industry that the city and the county has to offer. The 2019 winners and nominees in 15 categories were announced at a spectacular Awards Ceremony held at Colwick Hall Hotel attended by 300 people from across the restaurant and bar industry. John personally undertakes challenges to raise money – he has run the Great North Run twice for Maggie’s as well as the Robin Hood Marathon. John is also in the top 5 per cent of personal fundraisers on Just Giving for his annual Robin Hood Half Marathon efforts for Maggie’s. In addition, John has hosted various events to support the community such as holding free festive lunches at The Cods Scallops for both less fortunate families and the elderly with help from Age UK. Through Tasty Tuesdays he has donated food to a homeless shelter in the city. The Cods Scallops is also in the process of launching Food Waste UK where any food left overnight is advertised on an app and collected by less fortunate people. The Cods Scallops also raises money for the other charities such as Fishermen’s Mission - the only fishermen’s charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care. John comments: “It’s really important that we do our bit. We regularly support local causes, through charitable donations, and hold charity quizzes every month each for a different local cause. Since we took over the Nelson last June, we have raised £2500, and our ambition is to raise at least £10,000. “I’ve always tried to help people less fortunate, from employing ex young offenders and drug addicts to donating

hot meals for the homeless. After working with Maggie’s Cancer with collection boxes, I came up with the idea of adding £1 to everyone’s bill. “ “As well as charity work our businesses are passionate about helping the environment with a bid to use less plastic and only using sustainable produce whenever possible. We have just featured in Giles Cohen’s new book Truth, Love and Clean Cutlery which highlights businesses that serve good food in an ethical and sustainable way.” Originally from Nottingham, John has been in the trade over 30 years, starting when he used to skip school to help his Dad in the kitchen at his restaurant in Derby. After catering college, he started a Youth Training Scheme at a four-star hotel in Nottingham and has worked everywhere from Scotland to Newcastle and even Bermuda! Kathryn Greenwood, Joint Managing Director of award sponsors Eden PR who presented the accolade added: “John is a worthy winner, we had a huge number of entries for this category and there are some amazing venues across Notts who do great work in the local community. John stood out because he gets so involved personally and is a real inspiration.” Annie’s Burger Shack and Perkins Bar and Bistro were runners up for the award and the Plough at Normanton received a special mention. A hugely popular winner, when John was announced he received a standing ovation from those attending the awards event. His latest project is Top Floor Development launched in November 2018 and is a unique dining concept where customers can dine on the perimeter of a professional kitchen. It’s a warehouse-style private dining room that seats up to 24 and tickets are sold on an individual basis or the whole venue can be hired exclusively for bespoke events. As well as ticketed five-course events, he regularly holds one-off pop-up nights, such as recent Meat & Malbec and Tour of Italy events.

Probably the best fish and chips...

Prices are really reasonable with mains averaging about £10 and puddings all under £5. Worth every penny and the fact that the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night is evidence that the good folks of Nottingham agree with me!

When the girls asked me to review a chippy, I had to double check I was hearing right. What can you say about fish and chips? Well, quite a lot actually...

Kids eat free all Summer

The Cod’s Scallops was created by John Molnar in 2011. The concept was very clever – fresh, sustainably caught fish cooked and served in a fun, family friendly environment. You pick your fish, choose how it’s cooked and select a side dish. Simple as that. We visited the Carrington branch and even before you walk through the door you are transported to the seaside of yesteryear with the lawn and deckchairs out front. The decor is bright and cheerful with plenty of retro touches like the framed, old fashioned seaside postcards on the walls. The guys and girls working there all wore either knotted hankies (boys) or fifties style headbands (girls) and their tops all had funny writing on the back; “Had dock me duck” and “What a Brill Plaice” were two that made me chuckle. It is this attention to detail that really makes this place special. Then there was the food. Meals were served in white china versions of a takeaway box and I noticed that children’s meals came in sandcastle buckets. Very, very clever. Between us we had hake in batter, haddock baked with garlic, lemon and herbs, Whitby giant scampi and a Gold award winning steak and scale ale pie, all served with chips. Sides of battered onion rings and mushy peas rounded off the order. Hand on heart, the best chips I’ve ever eaten. The fish was out of this world and the onion rings tasted more of onion than ring, if that makes sense. They received the highest accolade from my son; “best ever”. Frying in beef dripping makes a massive difference. Four empty plates said it all. Sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie sundae rounded the evening off with style. All washed down with a bottle of crisp, white wine.

Every Monday, from 4.30pm – 6pm*

Starting Monday 29 July throughout the school holidays kids up to 12yrs eat free in all three branches. *T & C’s apply.

Give Chickpeas a Chance! Chickpeas,

also known as garbanzo beans, Egyptian peas and kabuli chana, are an ancient legume, used in cookery all over the world. As well as the beige ones we are familiar with, chickpeas can be black, green and red. I buy mine in tins but you can also get them dried or in a jar. They are a cheap and versatile store cupboard favourite eaten at least once a week in my house. The humble chickpea also packs a punch. A great source of fibre and high in protein they also contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals making them a great vegetarian alternative to meat. What’s not to like! Something you might not know is that ground chickpeas are used as an alternative to coffee and supposedly it tastes delicious. I’m not a coffee drinker so let me know if you give this a try.

Chickpeas have a delicious nutty flavour and depending on how they are cooked can have a creamy texture when mashed or crunchy when roasted. They are so versatile! I have loads of recipes and it was pretty hard to select just three. Hummus is the classic recipe but feel free to pimp it up with other flavours like roasted peppers or add some chilli for a spicy version. The curry I have picked is also totally flexible, depending on what you have in the fridge/freezer. Use peas instead of spinach and omit the paneer if you are watching the calories. Chick chick bang bang is a favourite in my house and one I am teaching my son to cook for when he goes off to university. Cheap, nutritious and tasty it ticks all the boxes. Enjoy!

Classic Hummus

Chick Chick Bang Bang

Chickpea Curry

400g tin chickpeas (drained & rinsed) 2 tbsp lemon juice 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp tahini 3 or 4 cloves garlic – crushed 1 tsp ground cumin pinch of salt water (as needed) paprika to garnish

2 or 3 medium sweet potatoes 400g tin chickpeas – drained & rinsed olive oil 2 red onions – halved, quartered & sliced 30g fresh coriander - chopped 2 tsp harissa paste 3 or 4 wholemeal flatbreads or wraps 2 tbsp mango chutney 500g spicy breaded chicken (optional) 300g halloumi (optional) coleslaw & salad to serve

1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion – finely chopped 2” piece ginger – grated 2-3 garlic cloves – crushed 3 tbsp spice paste (I use Patak’s Madras) 50ml water 400g tin chickpeas – drained & rinsed 400g tin chopped tomatoes 240g baby spinach 250g paneer – cut into small dice and fried (optional)

You need a food processor or hand blender for this. Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, garlic, cumin and salt in the processor or bowl and whiz to a creamy paste. Add a small amount of water and blend again until you have the right consistency. This is a personal choice. I like mine fairly thick. You also need to taste and tweek as you go. Maybe add a bit more lemon juice or salt. Serve with carrot sticks or toasted pitta bread.

Put the oven on to 200°C. Peel and chop the sweet potato into small dice. Put in a pan with salted water. Bring to the boil and simmer until just cooked (about 7 mins). If using, put the chicken in the oven to cook as per packet instructions. Drain the sweet potatoes and pat dry with kitchen roll. Crush the chick peas lightly with a fork or masher. Heat a splash of oil in a non-stick pan and fry the onion for a few minutes, then add the sweet potato and fry until it starts to brown, then add the chickpeas, harissa and coriander to the pan, stir well and warm through. Put the flat-breads in the oven for a couple of minutes to warm through. If using halloumi, slice and fry gently in a non-stick pan until golden brown both sides. To plate up: put the warm flatbread on a plate. Spread with mango chutney then put the chickpea and sweet potato mixture over the top. Then add the chicken or halloumi, a couple of spoonfuls of coleslaw and some salad leaves and enjoy!

In a large shallow pan, heat the oil and gently fry the onion until soft. Add garlic and ginger and fry for 2 mins. Add the spice paste and water and cook gently for 5 mins. Add chickpeas and tomatoes. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 30 mins. If it gets too dry add some water. Add spinach a handful at a time and stir until wilted. Add paneer (if using). Check and season to taste. Serve with rice, naan and a dollop of yogurt.

Notts CTC Raises £850 For Air Ambulance

Notts CTC's recent Audax cycling event proved to be an enormous success, raising a total of £850 for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Members of the group dropped by recently, as part of one of their regular cycle rides, to present a cheque to the charity. This donation represents the surplus from the group's recent Charnwood in the Spring Audax event - held on 13th April. The group also organises a second Audax event each October - An Autumn Day Out and donations last year from these events totalled over £1,200.

Back in the day, work experience meant a week off school doing some menial job in retail or making tea in an office just to say you’d done it. How things have changed… Current Government career benchmarks for schools stipulate that by the age of 16 every student should have had at least one meaningful experience of a workplace. The variety of roles available these days is staggering. Who would have thought ten years ago that ‘influencing’ others through carefully staged photographs would be a life choice? It’s vital that young people understand this huge world of work – and it is a world. The gap year of old is also outdated with many young people working their way around the world for years. Although there’s an old fashioned school of thinking that this is a way of ‘avoiding’ the real world I disagree. Travelling is mind enhancing and offers the opportunity to discover many new skills. Just a word of advice – keep records of where you were and exact dates. Many employers now require explanation and proof of any gaps on CVs and candidates need to be able to do this. In my capacity as Enterprise Advisor working with Ellis Guildford school we are excited about planning these workplace visits for students. It’s an opportunity for pupils to understand what types of jobs are available within any one organisation. Because in the main they genuinely don’t know. One of the biggest obstacles to this exercise is good old Health and Safety. Many companies are reluctant to engage with these types of activities because of the fear of something happening onsite. The reality is that schools will conduct their own risk assessments to satisfy legal requirements. Do you know of any local employers who would be keen to help? Are you an employer in the Nottingham area who could spare a few hours to speak with students at your premises? Please get in touch with me – it would be good to talk hjones@solosconsultants.co.uk

he winner will get a private ski lesson, 30 mins tubing, 5 viper slides, 4 toboggan rides & a hot meal in the Alpine Lodge for a family of 5!! Swadlincote Snowsports Centre, in the heart of the National Forest, bustles with activity and has so much to offer. For the budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you. I don't know about you but ever since I watched ‘Cool Runnings’ I have wanted to try a Toboggan run. Well Swadlincotes Cresta Run didn't disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. Age restrictions apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own.

The Sno-tubes are so much fun, they are large inflatable rings which can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.) They also have the viper slide to ride down in an inflatable ring, which consists of a 70m slope full with twists and turns. The Alpine Lodge & Bar overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the new coffee lounge which overlooks the nursery slope. Not too bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days and was transformed by John Nike who's estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK.

For more information on age restrictions please visit: www. jnlswadlincote.co.uk Tel: 01283 217200 Mon-Fri 11am – 9pm Sat-Sun 10am – 6pm Just answer the following question:

Tanya About Town The nights may be drawing in but there’s still time to enjoy the last of the warm summer days and nights in Nottingham throughout August and September. The hugely popular Riverside Festival, returns to the banks of the Trent (2-4 Aug) with the usual blend of live music, river-based activities, kids’ zone and a massive funfair. There is also the Riverside highlight - the Saturday night fireworks. You can also enjoy more free live music, outdoor entertainment and adult and children’s activities plus community stalls with refreshments at Nottingham Green Festival (15 Sep). The Robin Hood Festival returns for its 35th year in 2019 at Sherwood Forest (5-11 Aug) and join thousands lining the route at the Victoria Embankment as the Nottingham Carnival, the city’s liveliest (and loudest) parade winds its way around in a celebration of Nottingham’s Caribbean heritage, featuring hundreds of colourful costumes made just for the parade and energetically displayed to music from moving sound systems and Samba drums (18 Aug). The Big Fake Festival, a massive endof-season finale is back for its 6th year! Now hugely anticipated, its become traditional for the festival to come together and end its UK Tour with this special 3 day event set in the beautiful woodlands of Thoresby Park (30 Aug - 1 Sep). If you fancy something a little quieter, give Forest Bathing a try, a unique experience and a beautiful way to immerse yourself in the therapeutic powers of the woodland of Sherwood Forest. Learn about the latest medical research into the health and wellbeing benefits of spending time under the canopy of trees, with Holistic Healing Therapy. Regular forest bathing has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve empathy and creativity and can help to boost your immune system! Alternatively

you could join the free Photo Walk (11 Aug/8 Sep) at Thoresby Park for photo lovers of all ages, all abilities and all cameras! A chance for you to have a little creative ‘photo me-time’ and pick up ideas, hints and tips to help you make better photos, or enjoy a special night with a magical atmosphere of peace at Pure Land Japanese Gardens in Newark. The lantern-lit evening honours an ancient and venerable Japanese tradition and is the only place in Europe offering this beautiful experience (1 Aug 30 Sep). As well as the festivals there is the usual line-up of talent to look forward to. The Royal Concert Hall plays host to Trevor Horn (3 Aug) and Belinda Carlisle (25 Sep) whilst next door at the Theatre Royal there are plenty of musicals to choose from including my absolute favourite, Rocky Horror (28 Aug 1st Sep) plus Saturday Night Fever (3-7 Sep) and the Gloria Estefan musical, On Your Feet (16-21 Sep). There’s more live music to enjoy at The Bands in the Park series of events. The free sessions take place at the Victoria Embankment (4 & 25 Aug) and at the Arboretum (11 Aug & 1 Sep). There’s comedy coming to Nottingham too as Alexander Armstrong performs at Thoresby Hall Hotel as part of a package (20-23 Sep), Russell Howard returns to the Motorpoint Area (26 Sep) and Ben Elton visits the Royal Concert Hall (30 Sep). Open air theatre continues at Wollaton Park, Newstead Abbey and Southwell Minster throughout August and September, plus the outdoor cinema at Wollaton Hall (22-26 August) and also now at Moor Green which includes a showing of Mama Mia Here We Go Again on 17 August. If you prefer your drama indoors, the Colin McIntyre Classic Thrillers Season returns to the Theatre Royal with four thrilling dramas over four weeks (30 July- 24 Aug) Fancy a challenge? Take on the Aqua Challenge Inflatable

Obstacle Course at Water Meadows in Mansfield, a giant, indoor inflatable obstacle course in the pool; 30 metres of non-stop fun and action. Find out if you have what it takes to beat all the obstacles, escape down the exit slides – and then do it all over again! Or have you tried an Escape Room recently? Did you know there is one above Pieminister in the city centre? Solve the clues to escape and reward yourself downstairs with pie. *Always check ahead with the venue and book if necessary. There is usually a cost or entrance fee unless stated otherwise’

Last week a line was crossed.

The gy Wag Tail

Gary and I were out walking the dogs in some fields. I turned around just in time to see Gary getting his whistle out and comparing it to another guy’s whistle. We are talking dog whistles of course! In that moment I realised we had passed over to the dark side. Or should I say the dog side. We had become “dog people”. It was time to accept and embrace our new lives. So how do you know you are a “dog person”? It goes deep but there are tell tale signs... Waterproof trousers and walking boots are your outfit of choice. Every pocket of every coat you own is full of treats, poo bags and manky balls. You separate your “dog walking” clothes from your “best” to start with, and then suddenly you only have “dog walking” clothes! Your car/van is full of towels, old sheets and mud. You become far less house proud (to be fair that didn’t take much for me) and much less squeamish. My Herbie is a roller. He is in ecstasy having a good roll in fox poo. It used to be a reason for hysterical clapping and shouting, Benny Hill style chasing him around a field and an instant bath. Now we have an “odourometer” of 1 to 10. Measured by the time it takes from getting the dogs into the van to the smell hitting our noses. 10 is a definite bath, 5 is a shrug and we convince each other it’s not that bad... light an incense stick and move on. Standards have slipped.

New stench heights were reached last week. Walking round a lake, young Herbie dived in and retrieved a massive dead fish. When I say dead I mean rotten, furry and stinking! Proud as punch and super excited, he then proceeded to rub himself all over with “eau de stinky fish”. Even for us “dog people” this was horrific. This was assessed as a grade 20 on the scale and two baths later he had only just reached a 10. Before we adopted Harry I was adamant that I couldn’t scoop the poop. Weirdly though, when it’s your dog you can. Herbie (it’s always Herbie), has introduced us to a new challenge in this regard. Apologies if you are eating while reading this. As a grass muncher, Herbie often has what Gary and I like to call a “dangler”. It’s a technical term that I won’t expand on – suffice to say, what goes in must come out. He has been known to run around the field with what can only be described as a link of sausages hanging from his backside. This is unacceptable and assistance is usually required. It’s a two man (and one dog) job involving two twigs, chop stick style and lots of arguing about the most efficient removal method. How has my life come to this??? On the bright side, thanks to those two hairy stink bombs we have never been fitter, happier and healthier ... even with the mud, fox poo, stinky fish and a few danglers. © Ali Wale

Orchard Veterinary Centre Blood pressure clinics Is your cat 7 years or older?! Did you know that cats are classed as: Mature at age of 7-10 years (44-56 equivalent human age) Senior aged 11-14 years (60-72 equivalent human age) Super Senior 15 years + (76, then add 4 human years on for each additional year that they are. E.g. a 20 year old cat = 76 + 20, so would be 96 in human years) This means at some point your cat may need help in a variety of ways to make their lives more comfortable. Cats are good at hiding symptoms, so although they may look ok on the outside, there could be unseen issues.

Cat Friendly Clinic catfriendlyclinic.org

We are here to help! We are routinely running Well Pet blood pressure monitoring clinics from the age of 7. This consult is 30 minutes long where we will take a full clinical history and take 3-5 blood pressure measurements over the allotted time. An average is recorded and if needed your cat will be referred to the vet for further investigations. These appointments are held with the nurse. These blood pressure clinics aim to help us pre-empt or identify any potential problems. Cats in particular are at high risk of hypertension and it is quite common. Any cats that are identified as hypertensive will receive treatment to control their blood pressure, which will help limit target organ damage, for example in the heart, thyroid, eyes and kidneys. If you want any further information or would like to book your fantastic feline in for the clinic, please ask a member of staff or ring us on 0115 9693565.

Walks With Emily & Friends Cossall Canal Walk Walk distance: 3 miles Difficulty: Easy Starting point: council car park off Cossall Road (free parking)

This is a very pleasant walk which follows well trodden paths and bridleways. You’ll follow the Erewash Valley Trail taking in the scenery of Nottingham Canal just a stones throw from the picturesque Nottingham village of Cossall. We started our walk from the car park just off Cossall Lane. This car park is free all day. Dogs are ok off the lead for pretty much the entire route of this walk (as long as they don’t go swimming in the canal!) apart from the short stretch on the main road.

To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and beyond: visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks Twitter: @gbdogwalks

From the car park (with the road behind you), follow the path to the right with the canal on your right hand side. You’ll pass a handy ‘you are here’ map as well. Walk down the path ignoring any turn offs to the left until you reach a sign which reads “Erewash Valley Trail Shortcut”. Take this to the left and follow it down until you reach a green railway bridge. Cross this and make your way towards Nottingham Canal. Turn left here (with the canal on your right) and follow the path down. Keep following the path until it reaches the main road in Ilkeston. Turn left and keeping on the path, walk until you cross a small bridge and the road bends to the right. Here you will see a path and a footpath sign leading straight on. Watch the road here as there is a sharp bend and limited footpath. Follow the path crossing back over the railway and back up to the canal. When you reach the canal, turn left with the canal on your right. Follow this path and you will eventually come back to the car park where the walk started.

pets A Guiding Light For People With Sight Loss

25kg Of Solid Cuddles Needs A New Home!

A recent report by Guide Dogs, revealed that over 42% of people with sight loss feel that they are ‘left out’ of everyday moments, such as socialising, family life and work. To tackle the problem, the charity is calling on people to sign up to become a ‘My Guide’ volunteer. My Guide is a free service that matches trained sighted volunteers to a person with sight loss, helping them to build confidence and take part in social and leisure activities. Alan, a former World Championship rower lost his sight at a young age. Alan enjoys leading an active life, which he says would not be possible without the My Guide service. Alan is matched with volunteer Karen, who helps Alan to go to the gym. The two were matched because of their mutual interest in fitness and sport. Karen applied to become a My Guide volunteer after leaving her job, and says she enjoys helping Alan pursue the interests he loves. If you think you could help someone like Alan, contact Volunteer Manager Elizabeth Felgate on 0345 143 0221 or email:Elizabeth.Felgate@guidedogs. org.uk. Applicants will need to be over 18 years of age and willing to undergo training.

Introducing Poppy, a five year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier with a sad story. Having been used for breeding, Poppy came to Jerry Green Dog Rescue 250 days ago and very unsure of the big wide world; she was not used to a regular routine of walks, food and comfort. Since then, and with the help of a wonderful fosterer, Poppy has made amazing progress. Our fosterer describes her as 'a 25kg puppy', 'a fantastic house guest' and tells us her two favourite things are roast chicken and cuddles. Poppy is now ready for her forever home where she will be loved and can continue learning about the world in-between cuddles on the sofa. Her ideal home would be as an only pet, in an adult only home and with minimal leaving hours whilst she gets settled in. So if you like a predictable meal time too and want to give a rescue dog the chance for a better life, give us a call here at our Nottingham centre on 01623 792 886

FREE paint on offer for residents and community groups in Nottinghamshire. Nottinghamshire residents and community groups now have more opportunities to collect free paint thanks to the Community RePaint Nottinghamshire scheme run by Veolia (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors). This leads to an estimated 40 litres of reusable paint being wasted from our homes every minute in the UK? Community RePaint Nottinghamshire is hosted at Calverton, Warsop, Newark and Beeston Recycling Centres, where reusable paint can be taken by Notts residents for reuse, and Nottinghamshire residents, local community groups and schools are able to pick up that paint for free! Confessions of a Novice Gardener

It’s been assumed for many years in my family that I have no interest in gardening. There are reasons for this, mostly because my mother and at least one of my sisters are far more passionate about gardening than me, but also because until recently I’ve never had much of a garden. Growing up we were lucky in that we had a big old rambling garden that you could easily get lost in, and that meant that I had to help out with its upkeep for household chores, but I never got the horticultural bug. But now, here I am, the wrong side of 40 and quite happy to spend the weekend rambling round the garden hopefully cutting down weeds rather than flowers and watering the right type of plant. So where did this come from? A couple of years ago we moved from a cosy terrace to a detached family house slightly further up the food chain. This came with a nicely sized back garden which we thought would be a great size for the kids (‘we can play football in that Dad!’) and with very little thought about actually looking after it we bought the house. It turns out gardens are quite the undertaking. The first time I mowed the lawn I burnt the motor out on our mower, something to do with long grass, a slight incline and a cheap engine. Fortunately we have retired neighbours on both sides who are the most patient people I’ve ever met. God knows what they think when they hear us heading into the back garden, and so far we’ve had loads of great advice and the odd donation of plants to help us out. Most recently we’ve been advised to keep the kids away from the foxgloves as they’re poisonous (the plants, not the kids). For a while we were like the Stalin of the gardening fraternity in that we could kill almost anything with impunity. It didn’t matter how much we loved it, at some point it would wither and die (all except for a plant my wife had kept for years and pretty much neglected, but still it somehow thrived despite us, like some wilful shrub which had a point to prove). But things slowly started to change. My father-in-law left gardening

equipment in my garage, he even does gardening for us when he visits so we have to keep up out of a sense of shame. It transpires that he really does know what he’s doing and the garden looks better because of all the things he tells me to do. And now my evenings are spent checking out pinterest boards of ideas for the garden, whether it be insect farms, bird boxes, reclaimed wood or hipster salvage that will transform my garden into an eco-space. I find myself checking out mowers whenever we are in a garden centre and wondering how big the garden needs to be before I can have one of those ones you actually drive. I’ve even started admiring the weave of Premier League pitches and wondering how to get such great patterns on my own lawn. Both my wife and I freely admit we have an awful lot to learn, and whilst the kids are willing to enjoy playing in the garden they don’t yet want to put in the hard graft. For our wedding last year, friends of ours gave us a rose bush that would blossom as our marriage grew which was another nudge in the direction of doing more outside. And the benefit comes of an evening when I can sit on the patio with my feet up and beer in hand, looking over the work we’ve done. It’s quite a nice feeling, all told.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Dreaming Spires

There’s something wildly romantic about spires of flowers thrusting up through the other plants. Their shapes add drama to a border by contrasting with lower growing plants without looking out of scale. Stems clothed in flower fill the gaps between bushier plants, take the eye away from fences and walls behind and create movement as they wave in the breeze. They are well worth the extra effort when staking is required. These are some of my favourites. The classic spire-shaped flower is the delphinium with large flowers clothing the tall stems up to 3ft / 90cm tall. They traditionally came in every shade of blue, although now you can get white, pink and cream varieties. Delphiniums love a sunny spot and a free-draining soil enriched with lots of well-rotted muck or compost. They will need staking as the flower stems are heavy and they also need protecting from slugs and snails when they start growing in spring. On a smaller scale are veronicas which range in height from 3ft / 90cm down to less than 9in / 22cm. One of my favourites is the glossy-leaved Veronica gentianoides which is palest blue. This lovely 1ft / 30cm tall plant will grow in good soil in sun or shade. Even lovelier is the variety Tissington White. Slightly taller is Veronica Pink Damask with lovely rose-pink flowers in mid-summer. The taller cousins of veronica are veronicastrums that reach up to 5ft tall and have airy, often branching spires. These rarely need staking in my garden and I love their silhouettes against the sky. They come in shades of white, pink and blue and are easy to grow in most soil types in a spot that gets some sun. My favourite is the delicately shaped Lavender Tower. Verbascums (mullein) come in a big range of pastel colours. There are many good seed mixes you can buy like Southern Charm which is a mix of pastel shades. Chaxii Album (white) is also easy from seed. Watch out for the caterpillars of the mullein moth in late May that can quickly devour the leaves and flowers if left to their own devices. There are many other wonderful spire-shaped flowers to discover – I haven’t even had time to mention lupins! - but I hope this “inspires” you to add some dream spires to your borders.

Ford EcoSport 1.0 ST-LINE BLACK E/ BOOST 5DR 125PS: Face The Crowd The Ford EcoSport is distinctive enough to provide something different in the compact SUV marketplace, especially with the ST-Line Edition. Perhaps the most distinctive area of the EcoSport STLine is that dominant, all black front grille which sets up the EcoSport beautifully, especially when combined with the black headlight bezels, HID xenon headlights, cool daytime LEDs and front fogs. The EcoSport on test offers up what Ford say is a sports inspired style. What this means is that you get unique ST-Line bumpers and side skirts, optional 18" 5-spoke black machined alloy wheels, ST-Line exterior branding plus contrasting roof, rear spoiler and door mirrors. Ford have created an SUV that gives a fantastic first impression. Settle into the ST-Line and the sporting theme continues with unmissable front door threshold plates with the ST-Line logo, sports pedals and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. This is a great place to spend your time. Dominating the dashboard is the 8" touchscreen giving you Ford SYNC 3 which allows control of everything from phone calls and text messaging to music and satellite navigation through simple voice commands. Continuing to impress, it also includes electronic automatic temperature control, blind spot information system, cruise control and a rear view camera with parking distance sensors. Impressive stuff.

The EcoSport sports (ahem) Ford's 123bhp version of their excellent 3-cylinder turbocharged power plant with up to 148ft/lb torque meaning that you can leave the engine in fourth or fifth when in town, keeping the revs above 1500 or so and the Ford will potter along for as long as you need it to. A light clutch and steering and compact city car dimensions add up to a vehicle that is incredibly easy to manoeuvre in town and that's before you consider the benefit of an SUV driving position and associated improved site lines. On dual carriageway and motorways you set the simple to use cruise control to 70mph and begin to appreciate the build quality of the plastics, leather and switches around you and admire the stress free ride quality that the sports suspension setup of the STLine delivers whilst still giving hints of the fun to come once twisting country roads come into view. Out into the countryside and the EcoSport takes on a different flavour as the opportunity to stir the slick 6-speed gearbox through it's ratios and enjoy the turbocharged three-cylinder engine under the bonnet presents itself. Slowing down for the bends gives the brakes a chance to shine whilst shifting up nearer the top of the rev range and stirring the 'box shows what a fantastic job Ford's engineers have once again completed with the engine and drivetrain. There's also steering that offers up decent feel for the front end of the car and means that this

I’m an inner-city school teacher focusing on ‘real life’ motoring. Check out my blog at www.motormartin.com or follow on Twitter @ motormartin1 or find Motor Martin on Facebook.

SUV will go where you point it safely and without any surprises. There's room for five adults, a stylish exterior and technologically advanced interior. A superb yet economical engine, up to 356 litres of packing space when in five seat mode and loaded up to the parcel shelf and plenty of practical cubby holes and drink holders for driver and passengers. There can be no doubt that Ford have given us exactly what they set out to do. It's fun when you want it to be and sensible when you don't and with a starting price of £17,850 for the ZETEC, that's an excellent result. And did I mention you also get Ford's brilliant Quickclear heated windscreen?

Where will you go?

apter 3 h C k c i W n ews Joh Creed Bur tonRevi ’s n i s s a s s A : Parabellum John Wick Chapter 3 follows immediately on from the explosive events of John Wick Chapter 2, where to defeat the smug Santino D’Antonio, Wick broke the most sacred rule of the assassin’s world and spilt blood on the grounds of the Continental (the hotel that acts as a neutral zone in this world filled with elite snipers and knife throwing extraordinaires). Such a major discretion could not be overlooked, even for the legendary Baba Yaga. And so Wick is given an hour before he is ex-communicated and a hit of stupid-money is put upon his head. With the whole assassin world looking for the chance to earn the big-bucks and take out the most notorious killer around, John must find a way to survive, but now without any of his fancy toys or support network. All of the world vs John Wick, seems about even now. If you are familiar with this franchise to any degree, you know exactly what you are in for. And for the dozen of you out there that do not, John Wick is a non-stop train of excellent action that is tightly choreographed with immensely brutal results. You are treated to one inventive action set piece after another. The pacing of Wick 3 is fast, exhilarating, but never too exhausting, with just enough room between action scenes to give each one time to shine. From the effortlessly cool music to the visual tone of each shot, whether it be in the scorching desert or the blood stained streets of New York, every aspect of this movie is dripping with an infectious style that is like no other on the market right now. But let’s be honest, while it is obvious that the returning cast of Reeves, Ian McShane as the Continental’s hardworking manager, and Lance Reddick as Charon, the hotels closest answer to Batman’s Alfred, are perfect for their roles and shine in every scene they inhabit, the real star of these films is the ball kicking action. From the all-out gun fights, two on one hand to hand showdowns, or a videogame like

assault on a strong hold (punctuated by flashing green neon lights through a cloud of smoke of course), the choreography always impresses. Whether it be the stellar action, the utterly compelling performance by Reeves of a man just barley getting by with the energy he has left in the tank, or the spellbinding world of John Wick that is constantly giving the movies new and exciting stories to pummel its way through, you can’t help but get sucked into every punch thrown, and every witty remark exhaustedly uttered after a ten round battle. This franchise continues to show why it is the king of action and I can’t wait to see where it goes next. John Wick 3 Parabellum = 9.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 22)

TAKE UP OUR FEEL GOOD CHALLENGE Health and fitness mean different things to each and every one of us. It is drummed into us that we must improve our health to avoid long term problems and pressure on the health care system. I want you to think differently. If you improve your health, what are you giving your friends and family? More time, more energy, more you! Try this...self-evaluate your current health situation. Think about what went well this week and what could do with a little more attention. Commit these thoughts to paper. By doing so you’re creating a shortterm contract with yourself and each week with small improvements you will see how your health and life improves around you. YOUR WEEKLY CIRCUIT I’ve put together a little circuit you can do from home over the next 4-6 weeks to get the blood flowing and the energy increasing. If you do decide to have a go, I’d love you to tag me on Instagram so I can be a part of your journey. @strength.physique DAY 1 Kneeling Push Up - 12 Body Weight Squat - 15 Plank Jack - 12

Here’s the link http://bit.ly/HowCanAndyServeYou Aside from having three physically active days, try and commit yourself to walking 8-10k steps a day. This sounds like a lot, but it is actually only about 1 hour of constant walking at an average pace. The clarity and calming effect of having some “me time” can work wonders, especially while we enjoy the summer months. Have a great summer guys! Much love, your coach Andy James

PCSO Cook, who covers the Ashfield South District, is the Force’s dedicated officer on a multi-agency Vulnerable Persons’ Panel, is a District Safeguarding Officer and also works within the Neighbour Policing Hub in Ashfield. She was also formerly part of a Business Crime Team in Hucknall, before it disbanded, and has also been involved in local Shopwatch and Pubwatch campaigns. In the past, her efforts were recognised when she was named ‘PCSO of the Year’ at Nottinghamshire Police’s annual awards ceremony. During her career as a PCSO Kat has learned a number of investigative skills, adding that the ‘opportunities are there’ for potential new PCSO recruits to also develop in their roles. She said: “As a PCSO I do a lot of intervention and investigative work. I like problem solving, getting involved in things and knowing exactly what is

happening in my area. It could be a small piece of information that links into something much bigger.” “Being a PCSO you are the eyes and ears on the ground within your community. You always need to be alert and observant.” “As a PCSO I think you have to be a compassionate person and you also need to be versatile. We deal with such a variety of people, some of whom are in very difficult situations and live chaotic lives. You have to be able to cope with whatever the situation throws at you.” “You also need to be openminded, non-judgemental, and be able to listen to people and empathise with them.” She added: “As a PCSO there’s no such thing as a typical day. You come in and never know what incidents you’re going to be involved with. You get great job satisfaction in being able to help people and make a positive difference to their lives.”
