project is a Daybrook Baptist Church initiative, supported by Gedling Borough Council and working with local churches under the banner of Arnold Churches Together. is based on the site of the former Beacon Baptist Church and aims to provide support in a variety of ways for the community of Killisick and Arnold. We will be open during the week to provide activities, advice and a friendly atmosphere. is a place to find hope and meet with local people.

It`s not a community centre, but a centre for the community with activities for young and old to inspire change and make a difference locally.

Rooms are available to hire for community groups and activities;

Light Room –activity hall for up to 60 people.

Blaze Room – suitable for smaller groups of up to 16 people to facilitate meetings or training activities.

Torch Lounge – suitable as a small meeting room for up to 12 people or one to one meetings, personal development sessions or counselling services where confidentiality or a quieter atmosphere is required.

Nottingham Oddfellows has shared its top five tips for feeling happier in later life.

Said Karen Pye-Smith: “We’ve more than 200 years’ experience in helping people to get more out of life and to form lasting friendships, so we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learnt along the way.”

1. Keep your brain busy. Challenge yourself with crosswords, start a course, catch a talk or play, or write a letter.

2. Help others. Not only does volunteering encourage you to mix socially, it can supercharge self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction.

3. Join a local club or society. More often than not, regular contact with those who share a common interest or hobby will result in meaningful friendships.

4. Get physical. There are so many rewards to regular exercise aside from keeping trim. It reduces many cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It also gives your mental health a boost, helping combat stress, anxiety and depression.

5. Seize the day! Society research revealed that one of the benefits to retirement was being able to shop during less busy hours and not having to leave household chores to the weekend. By using time more wisely, you can do more of what you love – including steps one to four!

Frankie, Ginny and Chester – homes at last?

The previous life of Frankie the cat, rescued during a snowstorm by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is less of a mystery than why he has been waiting over a year for a home – as are fellow felines Ginny and Chester.

Incredibly, these three long-termers are still being fostered, with Frankie’s carer explaining: ‘Frankie’s a healthy 3-year-old and perfect company, so we’ve no idea why he’s so overlooked.’ Abandoned Chester at about 4 years old is the perfect ‘gent’, whilst 6 year old affectionate Ginny craves attention.

All three are “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested, for which they are clear – wormed, fleatreated, neutered, micro-chipped, litter trained plus vaccinated. Each new owner needs to continue the vaccinations.

To offer one of these loving cats a home, contact the Adoption Officer on 01159985063 after 6pm. This number must not be used for any other enquiry type or emergency – or email this volunteer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible.

The charity recommends its cats stay indoors for 6-8 weeks for bonding time plus are kept in at night. All potential adoptions need successful homechecks, with no rehoming on or near busy roads except for indoor cats.

Entirely reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs FIV cat, plus larger breed and male dog, fosterers. It does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds needing veterinary help. Gedling Borough Council Budget Plans At its meeting in March, Gedling Borough Council approved its budget and spending plans for the year ahead. Items approved in the budget included a council tax freeze for the third year running, a new visitor's centre for Gedling Country Park and a pay award to all but the most senior members of staff.

The council is faced with further reductions in the money it receives from Central Government amounting to £2.4 million. This is on top of a £1.9 million cut in Government grant that has already taken place.

Since 2011, the council has been successful in delivering £4.2 million of savings and plans to invest in a new visitor centre, toilets and play facilities at Gedling Country Park; provision of new cemetery land at Carlton Cemetery and a replacement artificial football pitch at Redhill Leisure Centre.

Free swimming sessions and a free period of bulky waste collections, along with a range of activities to create new homes and jobs were all part of a wide ranging agenda debated by Gedling councillors. Also approved is a pay review of all but the most senior members of staff, to bring the pay of Gedling employees closer to the average pay of other councils.

John Clarke added "Despite funding cuts, we remain ambitious for Gedling residents and are doing everything possible to kickstart the building of more houses and the creation of more jobs. We're also continuing our good work to support the most vulnerable in society and create a more compassionate Gedling. This extends to treating our own staff more fairly in terms of what we pay them which at the moment is significantly below what other Councils pay and what they deserve to be paid. We want the very best for Gedling residents and we can't achieve that if we continue to pay the worst"

Go Al Fresco!

Summer has finally arrived and it’s time to head out for bit of al fresco dining. Who doesn’t love a picnic or “pique-nique” as it first appeared in the 1692 edition of the “Origines de la Langue Française”. The piquenique was a kind of French version of the “bring your own” style meal, with everyone contributing a course or wine.

The first reference in English in 1748, suggested the “picnic” was a meal eaten outdoors but a more elegant affair than the traditional farm-worker’s meal eaten during a break from the harvesting. Whatever its origins,

most of us can’t resist the lure of a sunny afternoon in the park or by the river. The challenge for us, of course, is the Great British summer weather. As soon as the sun comes out and the grass is dry enough to sit on, we need to be ready to seize the moment, grab the picnic rug and head out.

Take a break from the traditional cheese & pickle and meat-paste sandwich staples and try one of these really simple, but a bit special, picnic suggestions to make the most of those fleeting summer days.

Picnic Sandwich Loaf This is one of my favourite picnic sandwiches, inspired by the young Irish singer and foodie, Donal Skehan. It is a bit more effort than your usual butty but well worth it (amount of filling does depend on the size of your loaf!)

1 long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways Handful of baby spinach leaves Few slices of roasted red pepper from a jar 4 slices prosciutto or Serrano ham Handful of basil Ball of Mozzarella, sliced Half a red onion, finely sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways, brush with olive oil on the cut surface and place, crust side down, under a hot grill for a few minutes until slightly browned and lightly toasted.

Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and mustard in a bowl, then whisk them together until combined.

Drizzle the bottom slice with about half the dressing and then arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers, starting with the spinach and red onion.

Drizzle over the rest of the dressing

and place the other half of the ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together, wrap in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and tie it together with string.

If you have something suitable to place on top for half an hour (I used a heavy wooden chopping board) that helps to stop the sandwich coming apart when sliced.

Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack

Easy Lamb Koftas If you have a portable BBQ or can find a disposable one, add a hot dish to your picnic with these really simple Koftas.

500g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Handful of chopped fresh Coriander 3 fat garlic cloves crushed 2 tsps dried Chilli Flakes (or chopped fresh red chillies) 1 tbsp chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper oil for brushing Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine well.

Divide into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a board to form a sausage shape.

Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. Cook on a hot griddle or on your portable

barbecue for 4/5 mins each side.

Ensure the meat is well sealed before turning to ensure they don’t stick to the grill. Serve with natural yoghurt, salad and flatbreads.

Portable Raspberry Ripple Cheesecake How do you transport a cheesecake in a picnic basket?

Easy, make it in jar!

150g buttery biscuit (I used Fox’s Butter Crinkles) 150g cream cheese 150g double cream 5 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g raspberries 6 smallish lidded jars (jam jars for example) Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a blender or place in a freezer bag or similar and crush with a rolling pin.

Divide the biscuits between the jars.

Whisk the cream cheese, cream, 4 tbsp icing sugar and vanilla extract until softly whipped.

Tip half the raspberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and purée with a fork. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining raspberries, secure the lids and chill until it’s time to go. Transport in a cool box or bag.

Oaks restaurant and bar is well situated in the heart of Nottingham. They serve simple, locally sourced meat cooked over a wood fired grill, and boy do they do a good job!

As you would expect from the name there is an abundance of oak everywhere. From quirky tables and chairs to the walls! Large chandeliers of candles, along with the open flame grill, give this place a really cosy, relaxed feel. Service was friendly and attentive and Marcos, the manager, made sure all the customers were well looked after.

This is the second review where the toilets are a must see - must be the new thing!

The menu, while not massive, is well chosen. In our opinion, better to have a select few choices but done well, than a huge array of mediocre offerings.

To start, we had some lovely quail Scotch eggs and a real beauty, baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese with toast. Despite many attempts, we have been unable to replicate this at home.

We followed this with a tasty honeydew beer and black pepper chicken that has clearly been well marinated and king prawns with herbs and chilli which was really impressive. The grilled chicken bites and hand-cooked chips were “like no other chicken we have ever tasted” according to the children - high praise indeed!

Even the desserts are made with locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed apple tarte tatin with toffee apple ice cream along with a selection of other delicious ice creams.

Liquid refreshments are chosen with equal care. There is a great selection of craft beers and for all those cocktail lovers out there, the restaurant’s range of unique cocktails is available for just £4.50 each between Monday and Friday – happy days!

OAKS also has several other offers during the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays diners can enjoy Rump Day – an 8oz Sirloin steak, handcooked chips and a glass of wine for £13.50. Diners on Saturdays can soak up the weekend from 12pm till 4pm with Bottomless Brunch, a choice of tasty brunch options with the option of unlimited Bloody Mary or Prosecco. The restaurant also offers a special Sunday roast menu, where kids eat free and meals start from £10.

With live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there are lots of reasons to give this place a go. Great quality food, bubbles, beer and a brilliant atmosphere – what’s not to like?

Easylink – making the City more accessible!

Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have launched a new and accessible network of Easylink buses for people who may struggle using existing local bus and tram services.

Easylink is operated by Nottingham C o m m u n i t y Transport and provides a door to door service, from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, travelling anywhere up to ten miles from Nottingham city centre.

Fully wheelchair accessible buses allow passengers to get to the shops, leisure activities, visit friends, medical appointments or anywhere else they want to go.

Easylink buses offer: • Regular, fully-trained and friendly drivers who can help passengers on and off the vehicle and help carry any shopping to their door.

• Brand new fully wheelchair accessible vehicles with a rear lift and space for up to two wheelchairs as well as up to eight conventional seats.

• Low-cost travel for concession card holders and free travel for their escort or companion if they need one.

• The ability to book a journey up to seven days in advance for a one-off trip, six weeks in advance for regular journeys or three months in advance for a trip to a medical appointment.

All people need to do to make use of the service is register with Nottingham Community Transport. Unless they already have a Nottingham City Council Mobility Citycard concession card or Nottinghamshire County Council Disabled Concessionary pass then they are automatically a member of the Easylink scheme. When a passenger books a trip they will be given an exact price for that door-to-door to journey. Journeys can be booked by phone, text or email.

Passengers Rate Gedling Voluntary Transport Service Excellent All passengers rate Gedling Voluntary Transport service very highly – with over two thirds rating it as ‘excellent’ and all the rating it as good or very good. The service provides safe, affordable, reliable transport for elderly and disabled people living in Gedling who find it difficult to use taxis or public transport and who don’t have access to a car.

All passengers were sent an annual satisfaction survey this spring to which over 70 replies were received. This is the first year the service has been run by Rushcliffe CVS and feedback proves that it is a much-valued service. Many passengers use the service to get to health appointments, followed by visiting friends or relatives, for social outings, going to the hairdressers and shopping.

Most passengers use the service at least once a week and there were many positive statements describing the service including ‘safe’, cheerful’, ‘reliable’ and ‘kind’.

Passengers also said: “Excellent service”. “A lifestyle altering service now I can no longer drive.”

Gedling Voluntary Transport service relies on the goodwill and reliability of its drivers.

There is a desperate shortage of drivers throughout the Gedling borough area.

Blindfolded MP and Cllr Highlight Pavement Perils on Guide Dogs’ Walk Two senior figures for Gedling experienced Arnold from a different perspective back in April, after accepting an invite from charity Guide Dogs to participate in a blindfold walk. The walk highlighted the dangers of street clutter and other pavement perils such as shared surfaces.

MP for Gedling, Vernon Coaker, and leader of Gedling Borough Council, John Clarke, both undertook a blindfold walk with a guide dog and a long cane to raise awareness of how everyday pavement objects can be hazardous for people with sight loss.

Mr Coaker and Mr Clarke donned blindfolds from High Street, Arnold and headed onto the shopping precinct. They experienced what it is like to navigate a level surface, which pedestrians and vehicles can use at the same time without there being any physical cues like kerbs to inform a person with sight loss that they are entering a shared surface zone. They also negotiated advertising boards and other pavement hazards such as items displayed outside shops.

Charity Guide Dogs is campaigning for clearer footpaths to help pedestrians with a visual impairment to feel more confident in navigating their environment. Cars parked on pavements, wheelie bins, and advertising boards outside shops are just a few of the moving objects that can cause problems and distress. These items can unnecessarily force someone out on to the road and into oncoming traffic. If that person is

blind, disabled, elderly or a child they may not be able to confidently negotiate when it would be safe to do so.

Vernon Coaker MP said: “Undertaking the walk with a guide dog and a long cane really highlighted to me how everyday objects can cause major issues for someone with sight loss. We rely so much on our sight to negotiate around objects but without that sense it can become a minefield. As a community we all need to take more responsibility to keep the footpath clear and to ensure that objects are placed in a systematic approach so they’re easier to navigate.”

Kelly France, engagement officer for Guide Dogs, commented: “Street clutter is a real problem for people with a visual impairment, as 97% of people who are blind or partially sighted regularly encounter problems with pavement obstacles, such as shop advertising boards or pavement café furniture.

“Poorly parked vehicles that block some or the entire pavement cause problems for many pedestrians. It can force people who are blind or partially sighted, parents with pushchairs, wheelchair users, and many others, to walk into the road and into the path of oncoming traffic.”

Gedling Borough Council is committed to making Gedling a more inclusive and embracing location. As part of this they have a policy advisor specifically dedicated to equality, Cllr Roxanne Ellis, who is working with Guide Dogs to help make the borough more accessible for people with sight loss.

Summer 2016 The Nottingham Centre’s winter programme of talks ended on April 28th with a talk by Beccy Speight (formerly of National Trust) about the continuing work of the Woodland Trust. Talks will begin again in September.

However, members have a variety of excursions, walks and holidays to keep them busy during the summer: Wed 13 July: Eyam Hall (NT) and the Cascades Garden Mon 15 August: Yorkgate Garden and East Riddlesden Hall Thur 23 June: visit to The Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire. Building of the Hall began in 1640 and it became the largest house in the county. It was bought in 1938 by George and Elsie Bainbridge Elsie was the daughter of Rudyard Kipling (the writer, not the cake maker).

June 28: The Local and Family History Group visits include the National Civil War Centre in Newark Fri 15 July: A highlight of the Garden Group’s activities will be a visit to the garden of Stuart Dixon, of Radio Nottingham August 1: Flintham Museum, with guided walk Sept 1: Nottingham Civic Society Heritage Walk In addition, two holidays are planned, one to Cardiff and South Wales in June, and one to Scarborough and North Yorkshire in September. So – there is something for everyone, but the holidays and excursions get booked up fast so don’t delay.

Flying The Flag at Nene’s Flowers April 23rd dawned a little chilly but at Nene's Flowers they were determined to show the people of Arnold they cared about our English saint. So, armed with 120 red roses (and mugs of hot tea) they braved the cold and handed stem after stem to passers by.

People were quite surprised and pleased to receive their fresh red rose. Some said they were attending parades and the rose would be worn as a buttonhole. The team at Nene’s managed to put smiles on faces and keep the flag flying for England and St.George.

Gedling borough residents can download a free app to access Leisure facilities easily via mobile. App developer Innovatise UG produced the Gedling Leisure app, which is now available to download on iOS and Android smartphones.

Residents can get up-to-date information, the latest news, class and swim timetables, offers and events straight to their mobiles.

Users will also receive push notifications for important news like promotions and can share classes or swim sessions with friends and family through Facebook.

As well as providing quick and easy access to timetables and schedules, prospective members can browse the membership packages available and learn more about the DNA Nutrition tool, which can help people balance their fitness with their nutrition.

Such is the growing demand for the Notts Guided Walks booklet, its circulation for 2016 has been pushed up to nearly 7,000 across the County, backed by a comprehensive web-site.

Once again generously funded mainly by the Big Lottery, the Partnership has distributed its booklets to County and City libraries, information centres, visitor centres and country parks throughout the County. Most of the walks are short – up to about 4 or 6 miles, but with a few of 7 to 8 miles. As the booklets contain a large section of Health Walks for less able or recovering walkers, many health centres will receive copies too. These shorter walks are taken by trained leaders and organised by the county boroughs as part of a national scheme.

Each of these guided walks will also be featured on the Notts Guided Walks’ website at www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk which is updated with new walks during the year.

It contains several well-illustrated selfguided walks in attractive areas for those who prefer to walk at their own pace, using downloaded instructions. Click on the ‘SelfGuided’ section of the web-site for further information.

Just a small amount of regular exercise can make a huge improvement to a sedentary lifestyle, especially when linked to the friendly social outdoor atmosphere of a small walking group. Life is good for walkers!

Gunpowder Explosion

Mr Edwin Garratt was a grocer and druggist who occupied a shop on Front Street, Arnold in January 1846.

This shop and the two adjacent premises were owned by Thomas Rhodes, a local businessman from Redhill. Garratt rented all three, the shop plus living quarters and warehouse storage. Of the three premises, the central one was bigger than the other two and had three floors. Next door lived a Mrs Lanng, a widow who had eight children.

Shooting of game in those days was carried out using muzzle loading guns and the gunpowder used by these fire arms was obtained from druggists. Edwin stocked gunpowder which he kept on the top floor of the middle building. He held about 20lbs in all.

Edwin had his brother George staying with him. George was a joiner by trade but was in a poor state of health. He was experiencing mental problems and spent most of his time in bed. His room was just below the storage area. It had a door that lead to a staircase from which you could access the upper or lower floors.

Edwin visited the warehouse about 2pm on 28th January 1846 before returning to the shop on the ground floor next door.

About 2.30pm he heard a large explosion and ran into the street just in time to see the next door warehouse front, roof, windows and doors falling into the street in a pile of rubble. His brother George was also blasted into the street by the explosion. George, although badly burnt and injured, did not die straight away. He was partly protected by two beams falling over him. He was taken to a nearby house where he was treated by Francis Sibson the surgeon at the General Hospital. Sadly he died from burns and other injuries two days later.

The explosion also badly damaged the two houses either side. One was Garratt’s own house and the other was Mrs Lanngs.

These houses then burst into flames and took over an hour to extinguish. The falling debris hit and seriously injured William Thompson, a framework knitter who was passing down the street at the time. William later recovered after a time in hospital.

All the other people and houses in the area escaped without injury or damage.

An inquest was called hearing evidence from Garratt, his niece Mary, who worked in his shop, and those who had rushed to the scene.

It was concluded by the jury that no-one at the time of the explosion, other than George, had any access to the gunpowder.

The barrels were secure and all doors and gates were locked apart from the one from the staircase. The hearing found that George was the only one with access and had either by accident or on purpose caused the explosion. The explosion caused George’s death, William’s injuries and the destruction of stock to the value of £350. The two adjacent houses received damage costing £400 and all three had to be demolished. Considering the size of the explosion and the number of people around at the time it was remarkable that there was only one death.

Gedling Country Park has been officially open for a year and to celebrate the anniversary, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke planted a commemorative tree in the centre of the park next to the memorial stone.

In its first 365 days the park has had over 30,000 visitors who have walked, cycled, ran and walked their dogs around the former colliery site.

The park boasts one of the top renewable energy solar farms in the country which over the last year has generated enough electricity to power 1,800 homes.

The future of the park is also very bright with the announcement of plans for a £900,000 visitor’s centre and the installation of a children’s play area. Consultation has begun on the visitors centre and residents can now have their say on how the centre should be used by visiting the Gedling Borough Council website. Plans are also in place for toilets to be installed in the near future.

The Friends of the Gedling Country Park group, set up when the park opened, has attracted nearly 900 members. The group have been involved in a number of projects to support the council to improve the park.

Over the last year they’ve helped plant over 450 trees, organised clean ups, volunteering days and raised funds to help build a children’s play area in the park.

nother season, and another failed attempt at a play-off spot for Nottingham.

Inconsistent results were the prime factor, only being able to string together 3 victories at most throughout the season. The year ended on a high however, the Green and Whites thumping Cornish Pirates 55-33, including a hat-trick of tries for winger Iongi. The British and Irish Cup was no different – Nottingham failing to move off bottom place in group 4, finishing with 1 win and 1 draw.

With departures comes arrivals, and new Director of Rugby Simon Beetham was not hesitant to bring in fresh faces, alongside a notable returnee in hooker Jimmy Stevens.

James Stephenson and Ollie Evans both join from Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey respectively, and 28-year old Ben Hooper adds to the dominant front-row. Nottingham’s fifth signing comes in the shape of Jordan Coghlan from Munster, who racked up just 8 appearances last season on his developmental contract.

Aside from the players, Head Coach Martin Haag (leaving to coach the England U20 side) has been replaced by Irishman Ian Costello, who joins Nottingham from PRO12 side Munster, where he was assistant coach and in charge of both kicking and defence.

Nottingham enter the 2016/17 Championship with a new coach, new players, and surely a new mind set to reach the dreamy heights of a top four finish. It hasn’t happened since 1991, but maybe, just maybe, the Green and Whites might make a return to the top flight in the upcoming season.

Anyone living in the Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood areas can register to receive free text message alerts from officers about issues affecting their area, including information about recent incidents and advice to help them avoid becoming victims of crime.

Your hormones were all over the place and you began to upgrade your entertainment viewing from ‘kids shows’ like the amazing 1990’s Spider-Man series to more mature, adult content. All you want is to have your mind blown by an action extravaganza.

A no holds barred, insane, intense, gory experience that grabs you by the eyeballs and doesn’t let go till its final climactic battle of awesomeness. Now ladies and gentleman they have done it! They have put that mind blowing, smile inducing, balls to the wall crazy experience on the big screen in a full on feature movie. And it is beautiful.

Hardcore Henry’s story is a simple one. Filmed in the first person, you are Henry. With your memory wiped, you wake up in a lab after a terrible accident and to save you, your scientist wife has made you into a cyborg. All is well until the villainous Akan crashes the party, kidnaps your wife to make an evil army of cyborgs like you and wants to kill you.

So what are you going to do about it? Kick some major ass in the most spectacular and brutal of ways of course.

The fact that the whole film is in first person is not only impressive from a technical and innovative standpoint, even with the slight dizziness that comes from being at the forefront of such high speed, bone-crushing movement, but putting the audience in the shoes of Henry creates an immediate and surprisingly strong connection between the films hero and the wide eyed viewers.

The editing in the whole film is expertly crafted so you almost never see the seams of how this film was put together. Being in first person all the time makes it a bit hard to cut away from a scene to the next without making it a jarring experience for the audience. But this film somehow uses the natural movement and momentum it gains throughout to fuel the well placed cuts so you never feel lost or confused and the unstoppable pace is never allowed to falter or stumble.

The choice of music in this film is fantastic. The songs are appropriately fast paced and get you incredibly pumped for the combat ahead. In-fact the music selection is so good, one song choice literally had me laughing out loud at what was about to take place on its opening notes and will forever be imprinted in my mind as one of the best lead up and epic fights in film history.

So in conclusion, if you’re a fan of action in any way, shape or form and are fine with everything that comes with an 18 rating, then you owe it to yourself to see this film. Its action is mind blowing in all the right ways, brutal, bloody, insane and heart pounding. The film rapidly cranks up to 11 and never comes back down and I loved it.

have recently celebrated their 18th Birthday and National Bronze Medal achievement with two amazing shows which were held in Long Eaton.

The ladies performed to a full house at both the matinee and evening performances, one of which was attended by The Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Val Custance and from Cheshire, the Ladies Barbershop Association’s Chair, Brenda Rothwell .

The audience were treated to Gem’s most recent addition to their repertoire which was an amazing rendition of 1980’s group, To To’s, “Africa” complete with the rain, thunder and lightening, with even a little bit of beat box thrown in too.

Gem Connection always welcome any interested ladies to their Thursday rehearsal evenings which are held at Harrington Middle School, Derby Road, Long Eaton.

Gedling Borough Council has given a £5,000 grant to Nottingham Playhouse to benefit borough residents over the next 12 months.

Half of the grant money will go towards concessionary theatre tickets for younger and older age groups of residents. Young people aged 14-24 can benefit from 50% off ticket prices and older residents, aged 60 plus, can enjoy the same discount.

The remaining £2,500 will be used to commission outreach educational theatre work in particular communities of the Gedling borough, including Netherfield, Newstead, Killisick, Daybrook and Bestwood Village.

The discounted tickets initiative aims to make theatre more accessible to residents, whilst the outreach educational theatre will give members of communities a chance to take part in theatre workshops, which boost confidence and could provide a new hobby.

Councillors Clarke and Fox released a joint statement, saying “This is an exciting partnership which we hope will grow in future and enrich residents’ lives. Theatre and the arts can have big positive effects on overall wellbeing and the community outreach theatre is a great opportunity to put this into practice.”

“I am so grateful to you” - this was the written comment – one of many – received by the Rotary Club of Mapperley & Arnold from a parent of one of the 29 young people who participated in their annual one week visit to the Outward Bound centre at Aberdovey in Wales.

The 19 UK students were chosen from a variety of organisations; Ear Foundation, Young Carers, Scout Explorers and Oakwood Academy School, Bestwood. The 10 Dutch students were all from the Pantarijn School in Valburg, Holland via a link through our twin club – Midden Betuwe.

All students were chosen from a set criteria to improve their confidence, potential and direction. Also as a reward for their previous endeavours - as in the case of young carers.

The group was accompanied by three Mapperley and Arnold Rotarians plus two Rotarians from the Dutch club along with a teacher from the Pantarijn School.

Richard Shacklock from Mapperley & Arnold Club said; “As ever it was just amazing to see a bunch of young people start the week as complete strangers, even from the language perspective and finish the week as good friends having bonded with the numerous outdoor tasks they were set – a great week was had by all.”

This is the 16th year that Rotary have organised this event and the 11th year they have been supported their Dutch friends.

The long term benefits of having a part time/holiday job for students go way beyond the money earned (although for most this is the most obvious). As a professional recruiter and mother of four I know from experience that one of the biggest challenges facing young adults today is employability skills.

These can’t be taught solely in the classroom – they are life skills which require practical experience and maturity.

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

Masters Swimming Swimming is a life skill activity and for our over 18 years the desire to take part in competition events continues. Our Arnold SC Masters swimmers competed in the CABS Masters Open Meet in March at Hucknall. Swimmers: Rebecca Barsby, Emma Davies, David Fortescue and Alishia Palmer each took away individual medals and 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the team relay events.

Development Swimmers Where were you on Saturday, 23 April (St George’s day)? Arnold Swimming Club members were out making their own history... It all started with 22 junior members heading off for an early start for a busy day at the Rykeneld SC Open Meet at Sharley Park, Chesterfield and what a day it turned out to be!

For some this was their first “Open” swimming competition but this didn’t stop a terrific performance with a final haul of 21 medals, 61 PBs (personal best times) and 17 speeding tickets (faster than advertised entry times).

Swimmers included: Amber Kirk, Connie Greatrix, Coral Harewood-Soos, Eleanor Watson, Ellie Davison, Emilia Jamson, Hannah Lowe, Keira Winter, Kinga Jurkowska, Lily Jackson-Oates, Maddison Mason, Shannon Mapplethorpe, Albie Stapleton, Ben Cuthill, Daniel Mapplethorpe, Eli Myers, Euan Iremonger, Jesse Richards, Joshua Merrifield, Josh Rayns, Max Davies, Samuel Easton.

And if that was not enough...

At 6pm Arnold SC Team (8-11 years) then sprang into action at the Notts ASA Stage 1 Trophy Gala at Hucknall. Off to a great start they swam their way to a phenomenal 23 x 1st place swims and 14 x 2nd place swims, finishing overall in 1st place position and winning the Gala Trophy by a clear 60 points. Again for some this was their first gala but what a performance!
