Join - and make a real difference to local animals Readers are invited to make a real difference to local, vulnerable animals by joining a local ‘lifeline’ animal charity.

Nottingham based Animal Accident Rescue Unit provides a literal lifeline to injured, abandoned and neglected domestic animals plus wildlife. Its work is only made possible from a mixture of donations: financial from kind members of the public - and time from its volunteers.

For a modest annual subscription, membership of this small charity is potentially the best way to help it continue - and brings with it benefits such as newsletters. Whether for yourself or as a present for another, this gift ‘keeps on giving’. Alternatively, weekly or monthly payments, direct from a bank account or by cheque can be arranged. Yearly membership is currently OAP/student/unwaged at £3.50, single at £7 or family at £10 – whilst tax can be reclaimed on Gift Aid status donations.

As one volunteer explains on costs: ‘If, for example, existing members gave just £1 a week, this would buy a year’s supply of insulin and needles for a diabetic cat, or microchips for fostered animals.’ As a registered charity, donators can be assured that every donation goes where it should; helping dogs like Ellie (pictured) who readers may recall was found in an appalling state … but thanks to the charity’s supporters was rehomed to a lovely home.

CALL FOR MEMORIES OF WW1 EASTWOOD As the centenary of the Great War 19141918 approaches, preparations are beginning at the D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre on Mansfield Road, Eastwood for the D.H. Lawrence Festival which will be held in September 2014.

The 2014 D.H. Lawrence Festival Exhibition, ‘Lawrence’s War’ will include a section on memories of Eastwood, of the people who stayed in the town and of those fighting away from home during WW1.

D.H. Lawrence Heritage are asking if anyone has any memorabilia, photographs, medals, belongings, letters, postcards or objects associated with the war period in Eastwood and the surrounding villages which they would be willing to lend to the museum or have images/documents copied (as appropriate) to exhibit for the duration of the Festival from early September to mid November 2014. In addition we are interested to hear if anyone has any stories of local people during WW1 whether they were a hero or a heroine, at home or away. Of particular interest are stories of what everyday life was like in Eastwood during wartime. If you think that you may have anything of interest to contribute, please contact Jackie Greaves at the D.H Lawrence Heritage Centre on (01773) 717353 or by e-mail at culture@ broxtowe.gov.uk.

Families looking to setup home in Broxtowe Borough received a welcome boost last week as Broxtowe Borough Council unveiled six all-new family homes to house hunters in Eastwood.

Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Iris White welcomed Carly Rose & Daniel Hall, Andrew Finnegan, Dave Brogan, Patricia Taylor and Dora Lawler the first tenants to secure one of the new properties on Midland Road, to their new homes last week after they applied through the Council’s Home-Search Choice Based Lettings Scheme.

Councillor White said: "I was extremely impressed by the quality and high standard of the new homes and it was a real pleasure to hand keys to the tenants. I wish them all the best in their new home, along with the other new tenants.”

Prospective tenants can take a 360 degree virtual tour of the properties on the Council’s website at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/housing The development is one of four social housing projects in the borough worth £6 million. Future developments are planned in partnership with Nottingham Community Housing Association and money from the Homes and Community Agency which could enable the building of 150 units of accommodation on 6 key sites throughout the Borough.

Can You Read The Bar Code?

I recently began getting involved with dyslexia.

I had only a few copies left of one of my books and I decided to bring out a reprint with a number of adaptations designed to make it easier for a dyslexic person to read. I understand dyslexia to be a problem for bright, intelligent people who find the printed word confusing.

As one lady told me, when she looks at a page of print, it’s like looking at bar code. I find that such a vivid, even shocking, description of the struggle she has. Her eyes and mine may hit the same page, but our brains come up with very different interpretations.

I was surprised to find that some academics insist that there’s no such thing as dyslexia. They say that if all children with reading difficulties received appropriate intervention at a young age, dyslexia would not exist. Possibly so – but what about all those who didn’t receive early intervention? Their problem certainly does exist.

Other experts are anti using the term ‘dyslexic’ because they feel it is detrimental to label people.

I’ve spoken to a lot of folk who told me they would rather be labelled dyslexic than labelled stupid, which had been their experience during most of their school days.

Another suggestion is that better off parents from ‘leafy suburbs’ are very pushy about getting a diagnosis of dyslexia for their child and it is their efforts that make it appear dyslexia is on the increase.

I can think of a different reason.

The condition we know as ‘dyslexia’ was identified in 1881, in Germany. In 1880, in England, a law was passed compelling school attendance for children from the age of 5 until – wait for it – ten years old. That was the reality for the family who lived in my house at that time.

It was not until 1893 that another Act of Parliament raised the leaving age to eleven. Can you imagine, today, no education beyond primary school?

It took until the end of the First World War for the government to raise the school leaving age to 14, and until almost the end of the Second World War for it to be increased to 15.

So what did these very young school leavers do, in times past?

They went out to work as errand boys, mill or factory hands, stable lads, domestic servants, agricultural labourers – jobs where not being able to read didn’t matter. Many people stayed in those occupations for life, but our young people coming out of school now have very different aspirations.

Since 1972 children have remained in full time education up to 16 and the majority progress to further education or training of some kind, for which they need good reading skills.

Now, dyslexia is a disadvantage in ways that it wasn’t in years gone by, but I suspect it’s always been around.

I have great sympathy with anyone who struggles with the printed word. I get so much enjoyment from reading, I wish that pleasure was available to everyone.

POLISH PARTNERSHIP RENEWED

(National Trust)

Broxtowe Borough’s ‘Friendship Agreement’ with Myszków, Poland was renewed in March following a successful visit to the Borough by Polish dignitaries.

Summer 2014

The Friendship Agreement was first established in August 2006 to add to the twinning arrangement that had been in place with Gütersloh since 1978. The agreement was extended for a further five years in 2009.

The Nottingham Centre (supporters of National Trust) has enjoyed a very successful twelve months under the excellent leadership of Sylvia Hale, who took over as chairman last year.

Nottingham Centre

This year’s summer excursions got off to a good start with a visit to the Macclesfield Silk Museums, and Cuckoo Clock Museum. This was followed by a trip to Iron Bridge Gorge museums in May. In June, members are looking forward to a day in Lincolnshire, visiting Alford Manor House, reputedly the largest thatched manor house in England. After lunch the party moves on to Gunby Hall. There are no booked tours here so visitors are free to explore the lovely gardens at leisure.

Keen walkers can also enjoy an organised ‘TV’ walk through Lyme Park in the Peak District. Then in August a three day walking holiday is planned.

The thriving Garden Interest Group will visit Doddington Hall Gardens, near Lincoln, Park Farm, Southwell, and Penarth Gardens, Sherwood, a beautiful garden found in the unlikely setting of the old Nottingham Brickwork quarry.

The Nottingham Centre is affiliated to National Trust and takes pleasure in contributing financially to NT properties in need. Over the past year donations have been given to several properties, including Belton House, Croome Park, Rufford Old Hall, and Stoneywell, a beautiful ‘Arts and Crafts’ house in Leicestershire, a recent acquisition.

The cost to join the Nottingham Centre is £6.00 for individual membership, £10.00 per couple, but it is necessary to be a member of National Trust to join. It is a friendly organisation offering something for everyone. In winter meetings are held at The Mechanics, North Sherwood Street, Nottingham.

This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10.

Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year.

‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken.

The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’

K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’

Introducing Eastwood U3A Local Eastwood people who are retired or no longer in full-time employment will soon have new opportunities for personal fulfilment and making new friends.

Eastwood U3A (University of the Third Age) will be the 24th in Nottinghamshire and the latest of over 900 nationally when it launches on 4th June to help retired and semi-retired people.

They will then have friendly opportunities to enjoy their retirement by sharing interests in a wide range of activities, such as walking, local history, card games, keep-fit, art appreciation and other academic subjects.

One of the people who suggested this initiative is Tom Hickingbottom who lives in Eastwood (right, above) and who recently attended

a meeting with Karen Taylor, leader of the Nottinghamshire U3A Development Team, to help plan the launch.

He used to work developing the Credit Union movement but said he now had the leisure time to make more friends locally who shared his interests in literature, real ale and socialising. "I'm trying to learn to play bridge so I hope there'll be opportunities to get more experience of that too", he said.

Tom already knows from friends in Hucknall and Ravenshead U3As how members there learn from each other and enjoy group holidays and visits to art galleries, stately homes and museums so he hopes fellow Eastwood people will take full advantage of a similar programme here. "I shall certainly enjoy lunching with friends in some of the pubs and restaurants nearby if we can form a Luncheon Club - provided they serve real ale!", he added.

Rumbletums Calls For Local People To Help Them Become The Nationwide Coffee Break Champions Fundraisers in Nottingham are hoping to be crowned the Coffee Break Champions as part of a nationwide six month collection contest which aims to reduce the amount of coffee packaging waste being sent to landfill. Rumbletums Community Café is calling for local people in Nottingham to drop off their used coffee refill bags, coffee bean bags, single serving coffee stick and sachets and coffee jar lids of any brand to the public access collection box at the Café on Victoria Street, Kimberley, between the hours of 10am and Trainee Natasha Dawes with the 3pm Monday to Saturday.

KILLER FILLERS

In a previous life I used to own a sandwich bar and we always made all our sandwich fillings from scratch. Here are some of the best sellers. These would make great fillers for jacket spuds, cobs, wraps, salad bowls and of course sandwiches.

Coronation Chicken

1 chicken small onion - finely chopped 1tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 2 tbsp tomato puree 5 tbsp red wine 1 lemon - rind & juice 2 tbsp apricot jam ¾ pint mayo

Poach the chicken. Once cooked & cooled strip meat from bones.

Gently fry the onion in some oil. When soft add all the spices and tom puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, lemon rind & juice. Cook for 5 mins. Add the jam and leave to cool. When cool - strain and then mix with the mayo and pour over the chicken.

Mushroom Paté

Corned Beef Crunch

200g tin corned beef ½ red pepper - diced 2” cucumber - diced 1 stick celery - diced ¼ red onion - diced 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp horseradish sauce black pepper

Mash the corned beef up with a fork. Mix with all the vegetables. Mix the mayo & horseradish and stir into the mix. Season to taste.

The crunch mix works well with tuna, cheese and cream cheese.

200g mushrooms - sliced 1 small onion - chopped 15g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic - chopped small bunch parsley 1 tbsp sherry 200g cream cheese grated nutmeg, salt & pepper, lemon juice

Melt butter & oil in pan. Cook onion & garlic gently til soft. Add mushrooms & cook for 5 mins. Add sherry & boil rapidly until all liquid gone. Cool the mixture then add to a food processor with the parsley, seasoning & cream cheese. Whizz to desired consistency. Place in serving dish & refridgerate for 2 hours.

On Monday 14th April, Beth Lee and Rhianne Lounds both age 17, were the first to receive a Hazel Braithwaite Achievement Award for exceptional fundraising activities for a new local skate park in Eastwood.

The two young ladies received their awards from Ruth Hyde, Chief Executive of Broxtowe Borough Council and Milan Radulovic, Beth and Rhianne, who met at Eastwood Comprehensive School, are just starting out with their local community work but have raised over £80,000 over the last three years for a new skate park for Coronation Park, Eastwood. Their dream is about to come true as plans are well in hand in partnership with the Town, Borough and County Councils who are all involved in installing the new park later this year.

Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic said: “Hazel Braithwaite was a women everyone looked up to. An unsung hero. Hazel led by example. She worked tirelessly to make a difference. She was always there for people and I feel proud to have known her. It is highly appropriate that we honour other local hero’s in her name and that we keep her memory alive in such a fitting way.”

Friends, family of Beth and Rhianne together with local people attended the inaugural Hazel Braithwaite Awards and the Town Council is now hoping that this will develop into and annual event to honour local community champions.

Handling Friends

They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of Ella Higginbotham aged 16 the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family.

I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me.

You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh!

In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you Next are not a new couple and just friends!

Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

Preparing For Interview

The UK economy is forecast to grow this year with most predictions running well above 2%. As the employment market becomes increasingly fluid the opportunity for interview becomes much more likely.

There are many things that can be done to maximise the potential for success when connecting with a possible employer. In any situation preparation is key as the lack of it can seriously inhibit self-confidence.

Before any type of interview give yourself plenty of time to • Research the role and the organisation – think about how your experience and skills fit the job and company ethos • Anticipate the questions you may be asked – prepare answers • Find out how the interview will be conducted e.g. single, panel, group Many employers will screen candidates by telephone initially. When preparing for this type of interview it’s important to consider: • Your tone of voice – be enthusiastic and use positive language • Battery life – charge your mobile fully before the interview • Location – find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed At a face to face interview it’s imperative that you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons by ensuring: • You arrive on time or better still, early • You are organised. Take along your application, CV and examples of work ( if appropriate)with you • You listen carefully to the questions and answer concisely • Your body language is confident and outgoing. Street Pastors Help More Than 10,000 In Nottingham Nottingham’s Street Pastor scheme has reached a new milestone after helping over 10,000 people across the city.

Run from the Malt Cross on St James’ Street, up to 12 volunteer Street Pastors can be found in the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights. They are on hand to help those whose nights out have not gone quite to plan.

New figures show that during the past four years the Street Pastors have: • Spoken to 10,205 members of the public.

• Handed out 2,669 bottles of water.

• Picked up 10,675 broken bottles from the streets of Nottingham.

• Administered first aid to 513 people.

• Used 524 space blankets to help keep revellers and homeless individuals warm.

• Given out 2,263 pairs of flip-flops to those who have lost their shoes or are unable to walk in the ones they are wearing.

• Helped 91 people get home by paying for a taxi.

As Jo reveals, there is potential for the scheme to get even bigger: “As well as our operations in the city centre, Street Pastors have also started working within estates in the city suburbs too. We would love to be able to expand our services even further to offer support on more nights of the week and also at major local events such as music festivals.

“With this in mind, we’d like to hear from anyone interested in volunteering as a Street Pastor. We’ll be working with our new volunteers to provide the necessary training from 24 May, so now is the perfect time to get in touch and help make a difference.”

Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Group Celebrate Their 47th Anniversary

Kimberlet Scouts Plant at Watnall Spinney

A charity in the East Midlands is celebrating its 47th Anniversary. They help people who are approaching retirement by providing seminars which cover finance, health, legal advice, safety, security, income tax, consumer rights, volunteering, pensions, benefits and how to occupy leisure time.

There are many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension date/ages and full details will be explained in the seminars. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. The recent budget proposals will also be explained in full during the sessions.

During the course, each delegate receives a Resource Pack and a 1:1 with each speaker to discuss any personal queries. The Course Leader (always a retired person) is in attendance for the whole of the time and can give first hand experience and help. The 3 Day Seminars are held each month and a charge is raised to cover the admin. costs. It is recommended that people attend within 3 years of retirement so that they can plan ahead.

The next Seminar is to be held on 23rd, 24th, 25th June and places must be booked in advance as lunch is included. All the dates for 2014 are on the website. Kimberley scouts marked the completion of major improvement work to the ponds and woodland at Watnall Spinney on the evening of Thursday, May 1st by planting wildflower plugs amongst other activities in a workshop led by the Greenwood Community Forest Team with partners Broxtowe Borough Council.

Dawn Radford, Akela, 2nd Kimberley Scout Group, said: "All the leaders said how much they enjoyed the visit and messages from parents show that the scouts loved it! We all want to come back again."

Watnall Spinney, off Trough Lane, Watnall was designated a Local Nature Reserve

by Broxtowe Borough Council in 2012 and is a haven for wildlife. The scouts planted bluebells and primroses, as well as aquatic plants around one of the ponds to encourage biodiversity. They also removed some sycamore growth following major tree work on the site.

The scouts, who live close to the spinney, also spent some time using a bat detector to record bats hunting for insects at the spinney.

Are you interested in a rewarding and fun role?

Literacy Volunteers are looking for Volunteers to help primary school children with their reading and communicating.

The Volunteers read, talk and play word games with selected children on a oneto-one basis away from the classroom, to give them confidence and help them enjoy reading and communicating.

Volunteers need to be able to commit to visiting the school on the same morning or afternoon each week (preferably for at least a year). They do not need any formal qualifications - training and ongoing support is provided. Volunteers should like children, enjoy reading, be patient, flexible and reliable and be aged 18-80 years. Volunteers will be vetted through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Introducing Carlton Brass..

Our roots date back to the old Netherfield Railwayman’s Silver Band formed in 1902 at the Colwick Locomotive Depot, part of the Great Northern Railway.

Carlton Band Organisation now consists of two sister bands Carlton Brass (Nottingham) 2nd Section Band, and Carlton Brass Training Band. Both bands attend a wide range of events from contests to weddings and Christmas Carols. Carlton Training Band have just started sending out their requirement squad to local schools, providing an interactive assembly and getting children interested in their local brass band. With having the two sister bands we cater for a wide range of abilities and age groups ranging from 8 to the over 50s. You are never too old to learn a new skill!

Music for Everyone gets Sherwood singing!

Nottingham based music education charity, Music for Everyone, is recruiting for singers to join their daytime choir in Sherwood.

Especially designed for singers of all abilities and experience, the choir rehearse on a Thursday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm at Sherwood Methodist Church.

So is Music for Everyone’s aim to get everyone in Nottingham Singing? Angela Kay of Newark, founder and Artistic Director of Music for Everyone for the past 30 years exclaimed “Let's hope so, we started with just one group in 1983 and now we have numerous choirs and other ensembles rehearsing and performing all over the city and county, so who knows!”

Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir – 93 years old and still going strong!

Founded in 1920, ECMVC is still very much alive and kicking all these years later. ECMVC is not only very proud of its history but continues to innovate and promote the very best of male voice singing as it performs for local groups and audiences, hosts visiting choirs and joins others as guests elsewhere.

In 2008, ECMVC took a bold idea and turned it into reality. What about inviting a few other local choirs to join in and raise some much needed funds for charity? Sounds Sensational was born and has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years.

Cyclists; love them or hate them you can’t deny that they are everywhere at the moment.

Whether or not you like taking to the road on two wheels, you can probably appreciate that having a car crawling behind you while waiting to pass is just as frustrating for the cyclist as it is for the driver.

And as the weather perks up, you can guarantee that more and more people will be taking their bike out for a ride.

So please, whether you are behind a wheel or at the handle bars, let’s all be patient and considerate on the roads and don’t forget those helmets.

But it’s not just your own safety that you need to be mindful of, take a moment to think about the security of your bike otherwise you could be facing a long walk home.

Most bike owners do the right thing by securing their cycles to allocated posts. The problem is the chains that are often used are very easy to cut.

Putting a £5 padlock or chain on a £1,000 bike is a bit like closing your front door but leaving it unlocked. It isn’t enough to stop criminals.

Take pride in your ride. Lock

up your bike if you leave it, no matter how short your stop, and always park where it can be seen clearly.

D-locks are stronger than cable locks or chains as they are a solid metal and very difficult to cut through. Make sure the lock is tight so that your bike is difficult to move around, twist or lever when it is parked.

Never lock your bike to something that is weaker than your lock and never leave the lock lying on the ground where it could be smashed easily.

Mark your bike’s frame via Bike Register or with Selectamark or CreMark.

Always keep a record of the frame/serial number and take photos of your bike, including details such as the make, model, frame size, colour and any other unique markings that could help us find it.

Register those details at www. immobilise.com or www. bikeregister.com as this will help us get your bike back to you if it is stolen and later recovered.
