I have been volunteering independently with various local schools for a number of years – in our line of business we see the talent coming through and are well aware of what employers are looking for. As a mother of four (now adult) children who have also gone through the state system of education I’ve always been mindful of where the shortfalls are. That said, in my experience our local schools do a wonderful job in supporting their students with the limited resources (time and financial) that they have. Recently my role has been formalised and I have been appointed Enterprise Advisor working exclusively with a local secondary school to develop a careers strategy and help them implement it. The school in question faces many challenges but are motivated and dedicated to making this difference. Whilst their focus has to be mainly on academic achievement there are all sorts of young people at this school with varied levels of ambition. And this is what we need to build on. There is nothing more satisfying than helping a student who does not come from an academic background realise that with the right advice and guidance becoming an architect or a doctor is achievable with hard work. We need to give all young adults the correct tools to fulfil their potential. One student said to me “ but Miss I just want to be a bricklayer like my Dad” and I felt sorry that he thought that was somehow not enough. We need bricklayers – otherwise where would we all live? We are all talented and skilled in some way and giving them a sense of worth and aiming to be the best they can possibly be is enough. We have set up career focus groups for every year within the school where we bring students together – not necessarily in friendship groups – just to chat about what they think about the future. Both the school and myself are keen not to preach to the students. Sometimes we have a lot to learn from them too. If you feel this is something you would like to participate in please get in touch. There are many mentoring schemes out there and maybe I can help you find the one that’s right for you. hjones@solosconsultants.co.uk

A dream falls through.

Back to school...

Something you’ve been daydreaming of takes a unforeseen turn… into a dead end. FEAR NOT because it was for the best, it wouldn’t have worked out well for you anyway. Take it on the chin and trust that new and better news is coming your way. It is!

You recognise that you need to brush up on your, or learn new, skills in order to progress. Getting access to the training or investment you need may not be easy, but it will be worth it so stick at it. This is a fresh start for you and will lead to reward.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Judgment, Queen of Cups, Two of Cups)

(Ace of Wands, King of Swords, Death)

A second chance at love.

A new job, or role, awaits.

You’ve been feeling emotional about a close relationship recently and, good news, things are going to improve. It’s almost as though you both have a revelation about why you’re together, and what you can, and cannot, put up with. This confession of honest commitment brings you closer than ever.

It’s all change at work, and for the better (even though change might feel a bit scary). Look at the long term, the bigger picture, and trust that you’re now heading in the right direction. Whatever this new development is, it’s going to suit you enormously.

Swimming in Hucknall Part 2 by Maureen Newton The contract to erect the open air baths was sealed in 1904. At the beginning of June work was in progress. At a H.U.D.C. meeting on 13th June it was decided to advertise for a caretaker. Applicants were to reply stating age and wages required. Opening hours were set at 6am – 10am and 2pm – 8pm. A supply of drawers and towels were to be provided for hire and the caretaker was expected to wash and take care of the stock. He was also to have, as part of the wages, prices fixed by the council for hire of equipment. The engagement was to be for the summer months only. Mrs Bradley won the contract to supply 100 towels and 100 pairs of drawers. The age of persons required to wear the drawers was reduced from 14 to 10 and no child under 6 was allowed without a parent. Certain times were reserved with free admittance for male children up to the age of 14 years but at other times charges would be one penny. Some time slots were reserved for adults. Towels and drawers were charged at ½ penny per item. The Medical Officer was requested to take samples of water from the stream flowing into the baths, analyse, then report back to the council. Eighteen applications were received for the position of caretaker. The six finalists were: E. Price, 17, Wollaton Street, age 41; B. Gough, 30, George Street, age 50; Wm Mason, 38, Curtis Street, age 26; Jos. Bexton, 10, Beardall Street, age 66; Thos. Hufton, 22, Bolsover Street, age 61; Francis Smith, 7, Sylvester Street, age 28. On the second ballot E. Price was appointed caretaker at 16/- per week. Even before the baths were opened it was envisaged that improvements would be needed. The Baths Committee could make alterations if needed, stop up all the places where the public could see into the baths, and provide dressing rooms and clothes hooks if necessary. Income from the first two weeks was to be used for these purposes. Saturday July 2nd 1904 was a great day. At last after many promises and years of waiting - the baths were to be opened. Situated between the Northern and Midland Railways, the pool measured 100ft by 20ft with a depth of 2ft 9in. at the shallow end and 4ft 9in. at the deep end. The bath was enclosed by walls of corrugated iron. James Whyatt carried out the work for just over £200 in total. It had been arranged to have a short opening ceremony but when the portals were opened the crowd of young people soon threw off their clothes and it was “splash, splash!! Splash!!!. Speech making was tabooed. Councillors were out manoeuvred.”

Image taken on side of open air baths “Several Councillors were present and whenever an opportunity presented itself the young fellows dived in front of them; even the offices of the law were ‘baptised’. Altogether it was a lively time.” On July 14th 1904 the Dispatch reported “that last week there had been 1,142 bathers and receipts amounted to £1 17s 8d.” For the next few years the baths were open during the summer months. The Y.M.C.A applied for exclusive use by their swimming club in May 1905 and were granted the use of the baths on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8pm - 9pm at a minimum payment of 2/6d. Edward Price kept his job at the same wages. Then on 18th February 1908 the Chairman called a ‘special meeting’ of the Council at very short notice. He had received a letter from John Edward Ellis with respect to the provision of a ‘Public Baths’. The Clerk read the letter and showed the plans of the building inside the envelope. “It was unanimously resolved that – this Council on behalf of the ratepayers and townspeople accepts the handsome offer of the Rt. Hon. John Edward Ellis M.P. to erect and equip a swimming baths on Wigwam Lane and hereby approve plans of the same. Further that this Council place on record its high appreciation of this latest example of the generosity of the Rt. Hon. J. E. Ellis. More next time...

The Toilet Seat Tale

What is it with holiday accommodation and toilets? Wherever in the world we go, we seem to have issues with the toilet! Honestly... is it just me???

And why is it that wherever you stay – even the most luxurious cottage with a sea view and all mod cons – you can never figure out how to use the oven??

Norfolk – static caravan. Gary sat on the seat and cracked it in half. Two days of the holiday spent sourcing a new one. Quite a challenge finding a peach toilet seat circa 1950’s.

Rant over. I am currently sitting in a lovely pub garden sipping fizz in the sunshine. We’re about to drive back to our amazing holiday accommodation where the telly works, there’s a really comfy bed, a fully stocked fridge and you don’t need a degree in engineering to work the oven. Crucially the mugs are the size of buckets and the toilet seats are rock solid! Best of all you even get your post delivered...

Morocco – hotel in Fez. The toilet was so close to the sink that you had to sit “side saddle” in order to even use it. Not a great time to get dysentery... Spain - 5 star house in Mijas to celebrate my 50th. The owner forgot to mention that a problem with the plumbing meant using a bin for toilet paper...like being back in Greece in the 1980’s. New York – Brooklyn brownstone. Amazing place but every time you sat on the toilet seat it slid forward and you felt like you were about to launch into oblivion like Eddie the Eagle. Barcelona – bathroom the size of a small semi. Yes you’ve guessed it. The seat simply did not fit the toilet. No matter how much you carefully adjusted it and tentatively perched your derrier you inevitably slipped and had to grab the loo roll holder to save the day. Don’t get me wrong, I love going away, but with age comes expectation. It’s the little things like the size of cups when you are staying somewhere abroad. Why are they always dolls house size?

Remember folks “holiday” is really just a state of mind.

Golden Staycation Rules

• Have a budget - like you would if you went away. • No cleaning. • No checking work emails/messages. • Eat lovely food - either cook something different or go out. • Go out for day trips - there are probably loads of lovely places nearby that you haven‛t seen. • Visit Lidl - with all the wierd brands you feel like you are in a supermarket abroad. • Be kind to yourself • Don‛t follow your normal routine. Mix it up a bit. • Act like you‛re on holiday. It works!!! © Ali Wale

Sustainable Ways To Eat With increasing marine pollution, intensive farming and the ever declining bee populations there has never been a better time to become a little bit more environmentally conscious. The world's population is booming, in fact in the past 100 years, we have multiplied at unprecedented speed and with that, natural resources are under increasing pressure. Our food supply is probably the biggest area of concern owing to the fact that, well, we all want to be able to feed ourselves for basic survival. No bees = no plants; too much pollution = ill health, you get the gist. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to remain sustainable and still eat well. Here are a few tips:

Sustainable Protein

Industrial animal farming has the single largest impact on our environment and that's before we come onto the ethical issues surrounding it. So how can sustainably?

we

eat

protein

1. Pay more for organic or highquality free-range - yes, it's more expensive and yes that may mean you won't be able to eat meat every day, but actually, we shouldn't be. Organic farming practices are far more environmentally conscious and ethical, plus the latest research points to the fact that eating better quality meat and far less often than we are currently used to is better for overall, long-term health.

2. Consider British shellfish - We are an island nation so it should come as a bit of a no-brainer to look to the water that surrounds us for sustainable food sources, but we are missing a trick in a big way. Many of the farmed fish species come with as many environmental issues as factory farming (I urge you to look into salmon farming) and most fishing practices are major contributors to marine plastics and pollution. On the other hand, bivalves (oysters, mussels and clams) are amongst the most sustainable. Oysters, mussels and clams come with the added environmental advantage of cleaning the water around them. Yes, you are reading that correctly, they filter the water in which they grow, depositing impurities in silt and removing it from the water. Just ensure you are buying British. 3. Eat more British beans - A few years ago, the East Anglia Food Link asked an important question: Could Norwich feed itself? To cut a very long story short, they figured out the only sustainable way to feed a city, with produce grown around it, is to introduce more beans to peoples' diets. Beans are a good protein source, grow vertically, therefore, needing less space and they fix nitrogen, meaning they do their share for the environment.

Go Locally Organic

From those beans from Kenya, to the lamb from New Zealand, our food clocks up some serious mileage. In fact, if your food had a

frequent flyer card, it'd likely rack up more air miles in a year than you would in a lifetime. Scary, right?

Buying local is a great alternative, however there is a slight catch. If the local farmer, whose produce you are purchasing, is heavy on the use of chemicals (fertilisers Don’t&expect pesticides), it could potentially have a greater environmental impact than shipping the product from a different country. The best option is to buy organic or if that is cost prohibitive, then speak to the farmer. Many of the smaller farms cannot afford the organic certification but they may also not be able to afford the chemicals, spraying crops only if they really have to.

Choose Minimally Packaged Goods

Let's be realistic, packaging is not It’s personal something that we can 100% get away from, but there is lots that we can all do to reduce our impact. Pick the fruit and veg that aren't in a plastic bag, make your own lunch, grab a reusable cup for your coffee and buy water in glass rather than plastic. It all adds up.

Merchants Restaurant Truly Magical I had read great things and viewed fantastic pictures so I was dressed and ready for an evening at this boutique fine dining restaurant. I was not disappointed. We were greeted by the lovely staff who showed us to a table in the very stylish Saint Bar with its beautiful feature marble bar. Our Pornstar Martini and Strawberry Bellini cocktails looked stunning and tasted even better, what a great way to start the evening! Once seated in the very elegant restaurant we were served an amuse bouche which is compliments of the Chef for all diners. It included an amazing Watermelon Yoghurt Drink, Crispy Ham Hock with Lovage Emulsion and Steamed Buns with Cod Roe Emulsion. This was then followed by some delicious homemade treacle bread and yoghurt butter. Superb. We were made to feel right at home by the fantastic Maitre D’ who chatted through the menu and explained the intriguing dishes to us. The menu is divided into ‘The Beginning’, ‘The Middle’ and ‘The End’ and is a reflection of head chef Luke Holland's memories which include those of his late grandpa, Ivor who was a big influence in his life, as well as time spent in the Royal Marines where he first learnt his trade. Created with a focus on using fresh, seasonal and local produce, Luke says “I can see the lamb from my bedroom window”. It's also amazing value as prices start from £32 for 3 courses. To begin I chose the Isle of Skye Langoustine, Chrysanthemum| Carrot | Caper. A truly magical blend of flavours, beautifully presented and a real treat to behold. For the middle course it had to be Hogget, Fermented Turnip| Broccoli

| Mint, a delicious melt in the mouth lamb rump served with the best crackling I have ever tasted. To end my meal it could be none other than the 80% Madagascan Chocolate Cocoa Nib, Granola | Mango | Lime. The chocolate mousse when mixed with the mango, coconut and lime created an explosion of different flavours that just worked and for a chocoholic like me, it was heaven. Stand out dishes for my dining party included the Holstein Friesian Beef, Barbecued Celeriac | Mustard | Shallot “a mouth-watering dish which is served raw but tastes like it's been barbecued”. North Sea Cod (middle) “a delicate blend of flavours which are given character when eaten with the 36 month old parmesan, wow!”. Sweet Pea – 2016 (end) “Luke has created a taste that is out of this world – so memorable”. All round a fantastic experience that I can highly recommend to anyone and everyone.

LET’S GO BANANAS! A

bbey, aka the Fishwife’s Kitchen, is having a well earned break and I am stepping up to the plate for this edition. While sitting racking my brain about what to cook, there was a fruit bowl with a bunch of very ripe bananas staring at me. Bingo! I don’t know about you, but my kids refuse to eat them unless they are bright yellow and blemish free. So we usually end up with some stragglers, especially in the tropical weather we have been enjoying. Bananas are high in potassium and a rich source of carbohydrate and they are a fruit

bowl staple for most of us so it is useful to have a few tried and tested recipes up your sleeve for those over ripe ones! You can peel and freeze bananas and use them in smoothies. Another great idea for a quick pudding is to make a slit through the skin and flesh on one side – don’t cut all the way through – stuff the slit with giant chocolate buttons. Wrap the banana in foil – sealed but not too tightly – and either BBQ until the skin is black or bake in an oven at 200°C for 20/25 minutes. Serve with ice cream.

Freestyle Flapjack

Banana and White Chocolate Muffins

Best Ever Banana Cake

You can add pretty much whatever you want to this recipe and it usually works.

225g plain flour 100g caster sugar 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg 4 tbsp vegetable oil 4 tbsp milk 250g mashed banana 85g white chocolate chips

This is kind of a healthy ‘ish cake.

90g golden syrup 135g butter 50g brown sugar 230/250g rolled oats 1 tsp cinnamon 250g (about 3) ripe bananas 100g dried fruit (I use cranberries) 30g cacao nibs/choc chips (optional) Method: Heat oven to 180°C. Line a 23cm square tin. In a saucepan, melt golden syrup, butter and sugar gently until all dissolved. Put oats and cinnamon in a bowl. Mash bananas in another bowl. Pour the melted ingredients into the oats and mix well. Add the bananas, fruit and cacao nibs (if using). I start with 230g of oats and add more at the end if the mixture looks too runny. Tip into the tin, smooth over and bake for 25 mins or until golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin and then cut into squares. Store in an airtight tin and they should last a few days - unless you live in my house!

Method: Heat oven to 200°C. Line a muffin tin with 12 x cases. Put all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. In another mix together the egg, milk, oil and banana. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones. Mix together but don’t over mix. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases and bake for 20-25 mins. They should be golden brown and a skewer inserted in a muffin should come out clean.

150g rye flour 100 spelt flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp bicarb of soda 100g coconut oil, melted 200g brown sugar 4 small ripe bananas 200ml almond milk or coconut milk 1 large egg 2 tbsp cacao nibs Heat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 900g loaf tin. Put all the ingredients in a food processor and whiz until well combined. Pour the mix into tin and bake for 50mins. A skewer inserted should come out clean when it’s cooked. This is a gooey cake and doesn’t keep too long, so I tend to freeze half.

Tanya About Town W

e’ve enjoyed a spectacular summer which has been just perfect for everything from outdoor festivals to open air theatre, but as the nights draw in it’s time to swap those t-shirts for woolly jumpers. I love cosying up on an Autumn night, but with so much going on in Nottinghamshire it’s time to wrap up and head out.

You can’t beat the sights, sounds and smells of the Goose Fair. One of Europe’s largest travelling fairs, it dates back over 700 years. Visitors can enjoy more than 500 attractions when it returns from 3 - 7 October. Calling All Knitters & Crocheters

Can you spare the time to knit/crochet poppies for Hucknall’s celebration of the end of WW1? Our aim is to decorate all street furniture in the centre of town with poppies to turn the town red. Alternatively, does anyone have red wool which is no longer needed but can be used by the knitters/ crocheters to increase their stock of poppies? Completed poppies can be deposited at our Information Point at the rear of Hucknall Library, as can any donations of wool. This campaign will run up to the beginning of November this year in order to give us time to use the poppies for decoration before 11 November, Armistice Day.

Notts NHW Conference 2018

The topic of Nottinghamshire Neighbourhood Watch’s 2018 Conference and AGM was “Connect 2 Protect”. It was based on the Mansfield and Ashfield scheme, which aims to strengthen and develop existing community structures, connection and engagement. The main aim of the conference was to constitute a holistic approach to a changing landscape of crime. This collaborative perspective towards crime was conferred by Nottingham’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, police Deputy Chief Constable, Rachel Barber; Stuart Wright, the project lead for “Connect 2 Protect”; as well as Peter Moyes representing ‘Lifeskills Education’ and Sajid Mohammed from ‘Nottingham Citizens’. The speakers voiced their opinions on the importance of moving from a crime focused to a wider social inclusion approach. The panel discussed with delegates of Neighbourhood Watch their confidence with the police, the impact of social conditions and poverty to crime, the nature of crime like knife and hate crime in Nottingham, and the actions taken after reporting crime. There was a consensus among the speakers which emphasised a need for improvement to the structures of communications from and between the police, Neighbourhood Watch, community organisers and the public; changes needed to bring communities back to collaborative ideals. The conference was also joined by representatives from Nottinghamshire Community Organisers ‘Age Friendly’, ‘Good Vibes, and ‘Victim Care’.

pets Could You Provide a Home to a Trainee Guide Dog? National charity Guide Dogs is looking for volunteer boarders. There are currently training dogs requiring volunteer boarders in the Nottinghamshire area, with emergency and respite boarders also needed. You will need to be over 18 years of age, willing to undergo training, drive and have daily access to a vehicle. If you would like further information on becoming a Volunteer Boarder, contact Dave Clough at the Nottingham office on: 0345 143 0221 or email: nottingham@ guidedogs.org.uk

Feline Fostering – More Please!

Can you offer a temporary space in your home to a rescued cat, or two, for a local animal charity? Animal Accident Rescue Unit has so many abandoned cats still in its care, that it still urgently needs more fosterers. With no rescue base, all the animals taken in are fostered by volunteers in their own homes. The lack of fosterers, however, affects the charity’s ability to help further animals. If you can offer even a short-term space in your home, to care for a cat or kitten until rehoming, the rescue would love to hear from you. Some space, common-sense and cat/kitten care experience are all that are needed. Fostered cats must be kept indoors for their own safety – so a secure refuge inside your home is essential, and a prefoster homecheck is always done. Plenty of tailored support plus advice, are also given by the charity.

Can you give a little time to make a big difference? We have a variety of flexible Volunteering opportunities available in the Nottingham area. Help us to change a life, Call Nottingham Guide Dogs on 0345 143 0221 Registered charity in England and Wales (209617) and Scotland (SC038979). 9602 11/17

You could share your home with a cat who would really flourish being in a home – like loving chap Columbo (pictured). Reliable volunteers living in or around Nottingham, are needed – so if this is you, please contact Animal Accident Rescue Unit on admin@aaru.org.uk, or leave a message with your details on 0115-9321555 and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. Orchard Veterinary Centre Do you own a senior cat? First let’s consider when a cat becomes middle aged – this is generally considered to be from 8 years old. Many of our cats seem to show no outward changes as they age, still going outside, eating and enjoying cuddles on the sofa. However it’s becoming more evident that there are things we should be monitoring a bit more closely in these older felines, that keep them happier and healthier well into their old age, possibly even to their 20s! These include:  Dental care. Many cats suffer from dental disease and often these signs are subtle and not related. Many grumpy cats are ‘cured’ after a sore tooth has been removed  Arthritis. It is thought that many cats start with arthritis from the age of 8. Often it may not be seen until it’s much worse and they lose muscling. There are many options available to prevent progression of signs from a young age  Coat. A lot of older cats start to groom less (often for the above reasons too) and knots in the coat can be uncomfortable to them. Also poor coat health can often be a sign of other geriatric diseases like renal disease and hyperthyroidism (which are treatable).  Behaviour. Many cats vocalise when they are older, other signs of senility can also be seen which can affect toileting and sleep patterns too.

edibles 2 r c n I : s w ie Bur tonRev nion Family Reu Better late than never. After 14 long years of waiting for the sequel to Pixar’s Incredibles, those who loved the original are now fully functioning adults (hopefully). Meanwhile a whole new generation of kids may not even know who this red spandexwearing super-family even is (unless they have really cool parents). Incredibles 2 begins right where the original left off, literally, almost to the very second. But that also means that this animated world still has a major grudge against the superhero community, and having a family of supers randomly pop-up doesn’t quite sit right. That is, until a rich fanboy approaches the family with a plan to get superheroes legalised once again. But is all this too good to be true? With the real-world 14 year gap between movies, the most striking part of this film is the astronomical leap in the technology used to bring the film to life. Animated superhero shenanigans have never looked so good. From beautiful sunset landscapes punctuating a high speed motorbike chase full of explosions and near death feats, to simply seeing a character blow-dry their too-real-looking hair, every frame is animated to perfection. The action sequences have also had a significant upgrade for this film. The action in this movie is insane. Super powers are used creatively in ways we haven’t seen from these characters before, and the general chaos caused by these clashing titans is a wonder to witness, making every set piece feel like a standout. Outside of the technical work however, we start to run into some problems. Waiting for this superfamily to finally team up and kick some ass was par for the course in the original movie, so that means in the sequel, team-up action is all we’ll get, right? Well, not so much. Incredibles 2’s plot takes the strange decision to split the family up almost instantly, creating two very different plot lines and making us wait once again for the family feats of heroism. As if the 14 year wait wasn’t long enough!

While both plots on their own are well told and expertly animated pieces, one being an awesome traditional superhero tale and the other an hilarious family sitcom featuring scene-stealer Jack Jack, together they never truly gel. Just as you get used to the hilarious family-dynamic with super powers, you are hurled right back into the conventional super hero action movie. The absence of a cohesive story makes the film feel lacking by the end credits. Overall, Incredibles 2 is a great film. Technologically speaking it is a tour de force. The exhilarating action sequences are up there with ones from Captain America and Ironman. There are two amazingly written storylines that make your sides split from laughing and excite in equal measure, making this a great Pixar film. But wonky pacing and splitting up characters that we’ve waited so long to see together, stops this sequel from being one of the best. Incredibles 2 = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

HOW AND WHY BUILD MUSCLE? For many years weight lifting has been viewed as a mainly male sport. The reluctance for women, and some men, to lift weights has always revolved around the fear of looking too masculine as a result. But there are numerous positive effects from building lean muscle tissue, and we aren’t talking about your huge Olympia body builders here. We are talking about general health and living later in life with fewer issues. Why Build Muscle? One of the things we teach our academy members is that lifting weights does not mean huge grotesque physiques. Firstly, and this is relatable to the majority of the population… we NEED muscle mass to burn body fat more efficiently. YES, that’s right. Increasing the quantity of your lean muscle tissue will help you burn body fat much faster. Aside from lowering your body fat, a good amount of lean muscle tissue will help and support the skeletal system, improve your posture and aid joint mobility, alongside many other sport related benefits, but we are talking about general health here. How to Build Muscle Tissue Firstly, to build good muscle tissue, we need to feed the body with what it requires for muscle growth and that is protein and carbohydrates. Effectively, you should be in a controlled calorie surplus, so you will need slightly more calories than your daily recommended intake to aid recovery and repair muscle tissue tearing from exercise. The catch 22 situation here is that you will gain a little body fat, so you do need to control and monitor your intake, but once you have gained a reasonable amount of lean tissue (5-7 lbs to start with) you will effectively burn body fat faster when you reduce your calories to under your daily requirements.

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Secondly, gaining muscle tissue through lifting weights takes time, a long time, so lifting weights for six months is not going to turn you into the incredible hulk, but it will improve your health, body fat and general wellbeing. The topic of gaining muscle is a huge one to cover but we hope this has given you an outline that doing hours of just cardio to lose stubborn fat just isn’t enough. If improving all round general health is the main goal you need to build some muscle first, then let the muscle work for you when you come to reduce your body fat.

You can find more information about these kind of topics on our website.

Musicians Extend The Band For A Night ‘What a great band – and what an amazing sound!’ said Nottingham Concert Band’s Conductor and Music Director, Robert Parker after steering 75 musicians through a special ‘Open Rehearsal’ in July. Covering woodwind, brass and percussion sections, the attendees comprised the regular members of Nottingham Concert Band supplemented by a number of invited guests. The event took place at Jesse Gray School in West Bridgford, the band’s weekly rehearsal venue, with Robert Parker and Associate Conductor Ashley Parnell leading the players through five pieces specially chosen for the occasion ending with a run-through of New York: 1927, an exuberant musical landscape by Warren Barker. Founded in 1991, Nottingham Concert Band comprises 60+ regular members and performs all over the area. Win a fantastic family day out for up to 5 people at Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre! Up for grabs is an amazing day out for a family of 5 including a private ski lesson, 30 mins tubing, 5 viper slides, 4 toboggan rides & a hot meal in the Alpine Lodge. Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre, which is in the heart of the National Forest, bustles with activity and has so much to offer. Not bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days. It was transformed by John Nike whose estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK. If you’re a budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you. Swadlincotes Cresta Toboggan Run didn’t disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. It is something I have always wanted to try since watching ‘Cool Runnings’ and boy was it fun. Age restrictions

apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own. Next we tried the Sno-tubes which are large inflatable rings that can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.) So much fun. There is also the viper slide which you ride down in an inflatable ring, this consists of a 70m slope full of twists and turns. On top of all this, Swadlincote also has the Alpine Lodge & Bar which overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the coffee lounge that overlooks the nursery slope. For more information on age restrictions please visit:

kids Hillside Primary Visit Aldercar Care Home

Children at Hillside Primary and Nursery School have visited Aldercar Residential and Dementia Care Home on Wood Lane, Hucknall to join in with a ‘Boogie Beat’ dancing and storytelling event with residents. Julie Wilkins is the Care Manager and says that the residents love to welcome visitors, and especially young people. “This sort of event is fantastic, bringing the older residents and the very young children together for music and fun. We hope that it will become a regular event we can share with Hillside Primary School.” Resident Eileen Timmins joined in with the music and said, “I didn’t know the children were coming and it makes a good change for us. It gives us something to look forward to and the children are so nice and well dressed!” Emma Quinn originated the idea of a collaboration between the residential home and the school and said she was inspired to use ‘Boogie Beat, Music and Movement’ after a member of her own family developed dementia. Emma says, “Boogie Beat prides itself on bringing people together. We can see the benefits for all generations of breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes, particularly around age, dementia and other conditions affecting older people. It has also been proven that music, dance, singing and stories help to improve mood, mobility and memory.” Emma says she hopes to continue the event on a regular basis. “After the first session the care home were thrilled with the residents’ responses to the children, all had huge smiles and participated really well. Hopefully this is something we can continue into the future.”

Burntstump Seely C of E Academy Launches New Pre-school Provision

Burntstump Seely Church of England Primary Academy is delighted to have received the news that it has been given the go-ahead for pre-school provision, starting in September. Head Teacher Heather Gabb says that this means that parents from areas like Hucknall, Linby, Calverton and Arnold, some of which have oversubscribed schools, now have a fantastic alternative. “What this means for parents is that if they have a child who will turn 4 years old between September 1st 2018 and August 31st 2019, and who would like a morning place, they can contact us and arrange a visit. We have wonderful facilities here and would welcome anyone to come and take a look for themselves, they won’t be disappointed.” The school is situated at the top of Burntstump Hill and has an enviable rural setting. If parents want to find out more, they can contact Mrs Garratt on 0115 9632833 or email the school at office@burntstumpchurch. notts.sch.uk.

Fatherly Faux Pa 's - part 1 A friend of mine recently became a dad for the first time and once he climbed out of the bunker of paternity leave it really struck me how quickly time flies. It seems only yesterday that my two were babes in arms, dependant on us for everything when we were knee deep in nappies and onesie’s. It struck me how encountering a new parent is like watching a war movie. You know the scene, the new recruit joins up with his regiment on the front line for the first time full of optimism and youthful vigour, asking where the enemy is. He’s met with silence by the grizzled veterans, each with a five o’clock shadow you could light a match on. Between the silence someone takes a long drag on a cigarette and mutters: ‘kid, you don’t know nuthin’. And how could we know anything? There’s no instructions, just an industry of baby books and advice from friends and family. Not to mention the occasional unwanted insight from random people who think it’s great to tell you how to raise your child. So far, I think we’re doing okay. There’s been up’s and down’s. We’ve got plenty wrong and plenty right, and somehow we’re muddling through. I’ve noticed that we’ve made one fantastic faux pa year on year, which I will share should anyone need to take some unwanted advice. I was really looking forward to sharing some of my interests with my kids, where you create a strong bond that will define your relationship. Not in a pushy way, I’m not going to force my children to share my interests, but it happens through a sort of osmosis. In the last few years my son has variously liked Star Wars, Harry Potter, computer games, toy soldiers, football and now superheroes. This is great, I’m super happy about this. But what we forget every time is that ‘OH MY GOD, MY KIDS ARE OBSESSED!’ They never stop talking about a subject they’re into. Once they start you just have to grit your teeth and strap yourself in because they aren’t going to let this go for a while. On a long car journey talking about Star Wars? Good luck, you’re going to have to explain every plotline and character and then be told why you’re wrong by someone who thinks Jar Jar Binks is the funniest thing in the galaxy.

Planning on watching a football match? You might as well put it on mute for 90 minutes as the miniature John Motson pulls out stat after stat whilst telling you just what the problem with VAR is (even though you’re pretty sure he’s just repeating what Alan Shearer said at half-time). There isn’t a subject your kids can’t put you off. But it’s brilliant, funny and insightful to see how they absorb information and understand it whilst simultaneously having no social awareness of how annoying it can be. My favourite was when my son (not yet ten) calmly asked me why the sword Anduril was renamed after it was reforged from the shards of Narsil (an obvious question for all the dad’s who love The Lord of The Rings right?!). I had no response, so he kept asking. And kept asking. And. Kept. Asking. Until I lost the will to live. I was tempted to put him on a one way flight to New Zealand to ask Peter Jackson. So here’s my advice for new dad’s. Take advice from where you need it. Enjoy the ups, learn from the downs. And for God’s sake, don’t let your kids near your hobbies!

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Nottinghamshire’s Flying High Trust welcomed 21 primary schools from around the county to the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham for their biggest annual awards event yet. Recently rated as the fourth highest performing Multi-Academy Trust in the country, and the highest performing in the East Midlands, the celebration at The Royal Concert Hall became a fitting way to look back on an unforgettable year for its schools said Nick Layfield, Operations Manager at The Flying High Trust. “Our awards evening recognises the achievements of children and school staff in several categories reflecting the Trusts’ ethos of Aspiration, Responsibility, Creativity, Pride, Confidence, Perseverance and Enjoyment.” Organiser of the mammoth event, Executive Officer Jenni Dunne said she was thrilled at the atmosphere in the theatre. Head Teacher of Mapplewells Primary and Nursery School (Sutton-in-Ashfield), Mr Karl Clowery, said this was the first time his school attended the awards. “My impression of the event was extremely positive. I thought it was a fabulous occasion and our pupils described it as ‘sensational’. It was the pinnacle to an excellent year and what a great way to celebrate those individuals within our community who continually exhibit those values that the Trust stands for, and for bringing all of the communities within the partnership together to celebrate.”

Byron Festival 2018

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS

Enjoy making a difference! Be a Literacy Volunteer in a local primary school

Several months ago, the Hucknall 6th Form Centre was approached by the organisers of the Byron Festival and were asked if they would like to perform in this year’s “Hucknall’s Got Talent” event as part of the festivities. Members of the after school theatre group jumped at the chance to showcase their considerable skill, and on Thursday 12th July, after a few weeks of planning and rehearsing, were able to perform on the stage in front of an appreciative audience. The students had a 20 minute slot, compered by Mrs Morris, who introduced Nardia Slack and Britany Smith in the first piece of the evening, a brilliant excerpt from Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Following this, Mark Turner took to the stage to perform and sing two acoustic guitar songs. Nardia returned to give the crowd her own acoustic rendition of two popular songs, accompanying herself on the ukulele, and then the two students did a beautiful acoustic arrangement as a duet of With or Without You. They completed the set with a dualogue about being lost, written and performed by Brit and Nardia, who had only put it together several hours before, to fill in some additional time they had been given. It was a real pleasure to be part of this fantastic community event and everyone really enjoyed watching all of the other acts who performed too. Huge thanks and congratulations to the Byron Festival Committee and Ken Purslow, for a lovely evening.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... From banking to shopping, socialising to entertainment, the internet is an exciting feature of many of our daily lives. However, it can also be a playground for criminal activity. Your personal data is very valuable so follow this advice to help protect yourself when online. Keep safe online this autumn Regularly change your account and Wi-Fi connection passwords and don’t share these. They should be made up of a mix of letters, numbers and punctuation with a different password for each account. Never share your personal data such as bank details, identity details, passwords or where you live with anyone that you don’t know or can’t verify their details. Ensure that your computer antivirus and firewall software are kept up-to-date and enabled at all times. Take regular back- ups of important files to an external hard drive. It’s important this isn’t connected to your computer as any malware infection could spread to that too. Check the companies you are dealing with are genuine. Don’t download attachments or click links to web pages within spam emails as these often contain viruses. Make sure your connection is secure when making online purchases by looking for the padlock icon at the top or bottom of the internet browser or that the web address begins with ‘https’.

Hold on to your handset Whatever you use your phone for, be it to keep in touch with family and friends, for taking photos and videos, using social media, or for business purposes, you won’t want to lose your phone numbers and other data stored inside. Securing your phone Never leave your phone unattended. If you have to leave it, make sure it’s secure, out of sight and can’t be heard. Don’t draw attention to your phone by leaving it on view on tables in pubs, cafes and restaurants. A tactic used by thieves is to place newspapers or other items over the phone and scoop it up. They sometimes distract phone owners by asking for directions and taking the phone when they are not looking. Don’t leave your phone unattended in coat pockets or bags. If your phone is stolen - report it to the police immediately. Tell them your IMEI number, if you have any tracking apps installed or any markings on your phone. Tell your insurer and service provider too. For more crime prevention information please visit our website: http://www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice
