Bring a touch of the tropical to your garden this summer Canna Lilies – A summer garden essential! Canna Lilies are stand out performers in the summer garden. Available from garden centres and supermarkets they bring a touch of the tropical to your plot. These exotic beauties have lush bold flowers and their patterned leaves are architecturally stunning. Despite appearances however they are surprisingly easy to grow. Follow my tips to ensure you keep them flowering till the frosts and bursting back into bud next summer.

Get maximum blooms Cannas are happy in flower beds or pots but they always seem to perform at their best as the showy centre piece of a container display. Never deadhead them. The new flowering stem comes up through the old flower so keep your secateurs sheathed to ensure the longest flowering period. Despite their tropical appearance Cannas grow best in semi to full shade.

Bright sun causes the vibrant colours in their leaves and flowers to fade. This makes Cannas your ideal choice to brighten up a shady corner. They tolerate drought conditions. Growth is lusher and denser when grown in moist environments but they still perform brilliantly when things get a little dry. This combined with the fact they don’t need deadheading means they are the perfect flower if you are planning a few weeks away over the summer.

Winter care Lift the Canna rhizomes after the first frost. Pop them into pots and cover with compost. Keep the pots in a shed or garage over winter ensuring the soil stays slightly moist. Plants will start to send out shoots in Spring. As soon as these shoots are visible move the pots into a frost free greenhouse or porch. Once any fear of frost is passed the Cannas can go back into your garden.

Cannas are hot, exotic, tropical and easy to grow. A real summer scorcher!

WOW!

C o n g ra t u lations to Rob Stua rt who wo n the £100 voucher. Have fun spending it!

97%

of readers say they use the magazine... the vast majority say this is for finding local trade’s people and getting information on what’s happening in the local area. Competitions, recipes, history pages and restaurant reviews were also popular.

99.2%

of readers said the magazine met their needs, which is great news... we must be doing something right!

Those who used local trades out of the magazine were all pleased with the service they got. This is brilliant news for us, for our readers and for our advertisers. From foot practitioners to chimney sweeps, roofers to plumbers you have used them all. The overwhelming favourite section of the magazines is the free time. Finding out what’s on in your local area. Competitions came a close second and we are working hard to get new ones for you to enter all the time. We were flattered that when we asked you how we could improve the magazine over half said it was fine as it was. We have had some great suggestions for new items and over the next few months we will be working on introducing some of these like the Bonington Theatre listings, a colouring page for kids and more reviews and local areas of interest. One thing was clear from the feedback - you lot like a bargain. You want more vouchers, more discounts and more special deals. We will pass this on to our advertisers so keep your eyes peeled for those offers!! Once again thanks to everyone who completed a form. It really helps us to keep our magazines readable, keepable, loveable and useable. The NG Team

Staying Safe Online... Nottinghamshire Police has issued a reminder to gamers to ‘stay safe online’ following the release of the Pokémon Go smartphone app in the UK. The app, which is currently the top grossing app on both the Apple and Android download charts, encourages gamers to discover in-game characters in the ‘real world’ using the location services on their smartphones. Users travel to real world locations where Pokémon characters appear on-screen through their smartphones camera. Gamers can then attempt to ‘catch’ each character and battle other gamers in the real world to progress within the game. Detective Inspector Pete Quinn from Nottinghamshire Police said: “The risks that this app presents are not new or unique and, as with any other social media, there is always the potential to put yourself at risk by letting your guard down and coming into contact with people you don’t know – both online and in the real world. “We are also appealing to parents to have an open and honest conversation with their

children who may be using the app to remind them about the potential risks, as well as making sure they know what apps their children are using, who they are speaking to online and where they may be travelling to use these apps.” Nottinghamshire Police is also asking gamers to be considerate towards others after officers were required to respond to a report of torchlight being spotted in the south Nottinghamshire village of Normanton-on-Soar in the early hours of Tuesday 12 July 2016. Officers travelled on blue lights – their most urgent level of response – to investigate the report from worried residents where they discovered two teenage boys out searching for Pokémon. It was established that no offences had been committed. For more information and advice about helping you or your children to stay safe online, please visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at: www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice/prevention

pets Young Mums House Hunting Two young mums are house hunting - having luckily given birth to healthy kittens in difficult conditions. White-tabby Apple, with her kittens Custard and Crumble who were born outside, were rescued by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Apple’s fosterer says: ‘Apple is 1-2 years old, friendly and loves company.’ Meanwhile, black heavilypregnant Mali was dumped outside a Nottingham police station. She was taken to a vet that night and promptly gave birth to five kittens! Mali’s fosterer explains: ‘Mali’s a little nervous so needs patient owners, but loves attention.’ Like all the charity’s cats, Mali and Apple have been “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested (both are clear), wormed, flea-treated, neutered, microchipped, litter-trained plus vaccinated for a year; their new owners need to continue these vaccinations. To discover more call the Adoption Officer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm. This number must not be used for any other enquiry or emergency – or email this volunteer at admin@aaru.org. uk, who will reply as soon as possible. The charity recommends its cats stay indoors for 6-8 weeks initially, plus stay in at night. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck, with no rehoming on or near busy roads bar indoor cats. Entirely reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat and dog fosterers. It does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets; but neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds needing veterinary help. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message for the telephone operators on 0115-9321555. For details, including all animals needing homes visit www. animalaccident.org.uk.

Detoxing: Is juicing the only answer? Juicing has become the latest trend for those wishing to rid their bodies of toxins. “Detoxing” is touted as the newest way to leading a healthier, slimmer life, with companies offering 3 to 7 day juice cleanses and many more selling detox products. Is juicing really that beneficial? Can we detox without it? Before we begin, let’s take a look at what a toxin is: A toxin is a molecule that is capable of inducing disease in the body. Toxins enter the body via the air, food, water and through the skin and exist both indoors and outdoors. In a nutshell, it doesn't matter what you do, you will encounter toxins in your daily life. Luckily, we are equipped to get rid of toxins through a process called detoxification. Detoxification doesn’t just get rid of environmental toxins, it also shimmies out molecules from the body that have served their purpose. For example, those hormones that cause PMT, detoxification gets rid of them. Needless to say, it is a pretty important process. Do you really need a juice detox for this process to take place? The simple answer is: no you don’t, detoxifying is an everyday process. The major advantage of juicing comes

from not ingesting so many chemicals whilst on a juice fast. Think about it. Every meal has been replaced by a juice. You are probably avoiding that toxic artificial sweetener from your afternoon fizzy drink, that preservative laced bread is no longer an issue and your evening take away is non existent. This makes perfect sense for the 3 to 7 day juice cleanse but then you go back to loading up on everything you missed, including those toxins that just happen to be in your comfort foods. If detoxification is truly your mission, that juice cleanse won’t even scratch the surface. Instead of juice cleansing, focus your attention on how you can reduce your toxic load. This means everything that passes your lips, what you breathe in and even what goes on your skin (and yes, there is a good reason hippies don’t wear deodorant). Even more importantly, ensure that your gut and liver function is optimal. Without these organs, getting rid of toxins would be borderline impossible. Here are some tips & tricks to consider:

Avoid Toxins

Get rid of Toxins

• Filter water. • Wash all fruit and vegetables and buy organic where possible. • Ditch anything artificially sweetened. • Avoid sources of food additives. • Reduce your caffeine intake. • Don’t smoke - this one is obvious • Consider how much alcohol you really need. • Unless specifically advised by a doctor, over the counter medications such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin and the like are best avoided. • Switch to natural personal care products where possible.

• Load up on leafy greens. • Eat lightly cooked brassicas such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and cabbages. These may speed up detoxification. • Include herbs and spices where possible.. • Eat some good quality meat. Protein is essential for detoxification. • Drink plenty of filtered water. • Lose weight. Some toxins accumulate in fat so if you carry excess weight, weight loss is a necessity for detoxification. • Sweat it out. Some detoxification does happen through the skin • Sleep. 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep should be the aim.

About to pop after two very generous courses, we ordered ice cream for dessert. The kids ordered fluffwich soldiers and chocolate dip. Mist and Mellow Fruitfulness As summer draws to a close and the nights become longer, the smell of Autumn is in the air. Harvest Festivals are celebrated, many of us are making jam and chutney by the lorry-load to use up the last of the summer fruits and those green tomatoes that never ripen, as well as all the windfall apples, plums and pears. Autumn also heralds a range of ancient festivals, Halloween of course, (the modern version largely imported from the US) but also a range of quirky local rituals that are still practised. In some villages, barrels of tar are set alight and paraded through

the main street, in some places cider is poured over apple tree roots and bizarrely dressed troupes ward off evil spirits with “Soul Cakes”. Halloween itself has its roots in a pagan Celtic festival “Samhain” and the Christian Festival of All Saints Day (All Hallows), when prayers were offered for the souls of the dead. Soon it will be Bonfire Night, with traditional toffee and warming soups and then, Winter will be upon us again. Make the most of the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” with these seasonal recipes.

Autumn Berry Flaugnarde

Fig and Dolcelatte Tarts

What better time than the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn to use up the last of the soft fruits and berries in this delicious and easy dessert. Not quite a true Flaugnarde and a bit like a traditional cherry clafoutis, this is cheap to make and perfect for using up a glut.

Fresh figs are a fantastic and under-used addition to the Autumn table. Their high sugar content makes them perfect to serve with something strong and salty, like blue cheese or prosciutto.

Ingredients A little softened butter for greasing 400g or so of mixed seasonal berries (or you could use plums) For the batter:50g ground almonds 2 tbsp plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 250ml double cream Heat oven to 190oC fan or 170oC/ gas 5. Grease a 23cm flan dish or shallow pie dish (not loose bottomed) and scatter the berries over the base. Place all the batter ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk until smooth, pour it over the fruits and bake for around 30 minutes until risen and golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of single cream.

(makes 6)

Ingredients 2 sheets filo pastry (22cm x 25cm square) A little melted butter 3 ripe figs 100g creamy blue cheese, I used Dolcelatte 1 tsp lemon juice 3 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped Sprinkling of ground paprika Preheat the oven to 190oC/Gas6. Brush two sheets of filo with butter and place on top of each other. Cut into 12 equal squares. Put the squares together in pairs on top of each other at a 45 degree angle (so they make a star shape). Press into the holes of a muffin tin or Yorkshire pudding tin. Bake in the oven for around 6/7 mins or until just golden brown and crisp (keep a close eye as they are so easy to burn!). Transfer to a baking tray. Chop the figs into small pieces and divide between the filo cups. Put the cheese, sage, lemon juice into a bowl. Mash down with a fork, season with black pepper, then spoon a small amount of the cheese

mixture on top of the fig. Sprinkle lightly with paprika. Bake in the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the cheese has just melted.

Apple “in and out” pudding Ingredients (1 apple per person) 4 evenly sized Bramley cooking apples 75g unsalted butter 75g soft brown sugar approx 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, approx half teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 175g plain flour, cold water, 3 eggs, pinch salt, 450ml full fat milk (more or less) Pre-heat oven to around 200oC or 190oC fan oven. Peel (or not) and core apples. Cream together the butter and sugar and add the nutmeg and cinnamon, or whichever spices you are using. Fill the centre of the apples with this mixture and place them in a large buttered oven-proof dish. It needs to be a deep dish so the batter can rise to almost cover the apples. Blend the flour and salt with a little cold water and then add the eggs and enough milk to make a thick creamy batter (slightly thicker than a Yorkshire pudding batter). Pour this over the apples and bake in your pre-heated oven for around 45 minutes, until the apples are soft and oozy and the batter is risen. It should have a golden crisp surface and a soft centre. Serve immediately, with custard or cream. But beware, it will be

extremely hot!

Hucknall Tourism & Regeneration Group

The Flying High Trust hosts super art event for 9 primary schools!

Children from all over Nottinghamshire came together at Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy for an art event with the help of professional artist Sarah Palmer. This year’s Byron Festival is now over but we are already making plans for next year. One of the highlights of this year’s festival was a fantastic Music to Light Show which was projected on to the newly refurbished Hucknall Library whilst classical music was played. In addition, St Mary Magdalene’s Churchyard was illuminated by lots of lanterns, some suspended from trees and bushes and others from a large globe which was brought along to show them at their best. At the present time, concentrating on next year, we are endeavouring to bring something else spectacular and special for Hucknall. The gathering of scooters, motorcycles, classic cars and campervans on the Market Place was, once again, a sight to behold. At 10.30am, the peace of a quiet Sunday morning was broken as all these vehicles revved up and proceeded in convoy down the High Street en route for Newstead Abbey where they remained, on show, for the rest of the day. During the whole ten day period, a host of events took place, most of them free of charge, and they were enjoyed by hundreds of people. Please look out in early July 2017 for the Hucknall Byron Carnival.

The children came from nine different schools; all part of The Flying High Trust, a primary schools’ multi-academy trust founded in Nottinghamshire and based at Cotgrave. The idea behind the event was simple says Chris Wheatley, Chief Executive Officer at The Flying High Trust. “The Trust Arts event has been a huge success, bringing together children from across our nine schools who demonstrate a real talent and passion for the arts.” Artist Sarah Palmer said that various skills were needed to create the works of art, “It is a lovely opportunity for the children to get together and create part of a large installation for their awards ceremony. They have done an amazing job! The work has been quite technical, they have needed patience and an understanding of mathematics as well as art and they have made a really good job of it.” The Flying High Trust has member primary academies all over Nottinghamshire including Ernehale Junior School (Arnold), Hillside Primary and Nursery School (Hucknall), The Flying High Academy (Ladybrook Mansfield), Beeston Fields Primary and Nursery School, Greythorn Primary School (West Bridgford) and Edwalton Primary School.

J M Wills - A Service You Can Trust Making a will is incredibly important for lots of reasons. These are just a few examples of the way a will can help you; it ensures that you have the right person to take control of things; it states who will inherit your assets and property; who will look after your children and it can also help you save on inheritance tax. The legal formalities that surround making a will and planning for the future of your children can often be intimidating, and it may seem like a daunting task; but it doesn’t have to be that way. J M Wills & Legal Services Limited can make the whole process easy and it can be carried out in the comfort of your own home where they can help you make these hard decisions.

“Writing a will is not necessarily straightforward” owner Jan explains, “but that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult for the client! There are a lot of aspects to consider, but we’ll talk these through and I’ll give honest, straightforward advice.” “Everybody’s circumstances are different, and it’s my role to explain how a client’s family and loved ones could be affected in the event of their death. It’s a very sensitive area and people don’t like to talk about it, but we have to face reality. Death is inevitable, and if we plan for it we can avoid leaving loved ones in a mess and ensure our wishes are put in place to avoid them ending up in the hands of the courts”

Will you protect your loved ones? It’s easier than you think. Simply call us on 0115 752 2196 to find out how we can help protect the people you love. enquiries@jmwillsandlegalservices.co.uk | www.jmwillsandlegalservices.co.uk

O

n Sunday 10th July we arrived at Go Ape in Sherwood Pines Forest Park for our tree climbing, swinging and zip wire adventure. I took the family along, grandad, dad and two teenagers – all of whom should feel at home swinging through the trees. Our day started with a safety briefing, being strapped into a climbing style harness and then practising using the safety equipment, clipping onto the safety lines and swapping from one obstacle to another. After this we were set free to traverse the course by ourselves. We climbed a ladder up into the tree tops and then decided which out of two paths to take. The tree top trails involve swinging into giant cargo nets, crawling through barrel type tunnels, edging along tightrope wires, stepping across wooden slats, and much, much more. My favourite and worst moment was swinging across into a cargo net after dropping a few feet first. This was great for someone like me, who was determined to fight my fear of heights and have a great day with the family.

The whole adventure start to finish lasted around 3 hours and even though the site itself was busy we hardly ever got held up. All in all a fantastic day out with lots of laughs and monkeying around. A Baboon (10-15 years) costs £25 and a Gorilla (16 years +) costs £33. Go Ape was dreamed up by Tris and Becs back in 2001 while on holiday in France with their six month old baby. They came across a French family swinging through the trees and when they saw how much fun they were having came up with the idea of Go Ape. Since then they have built 30 courses all across the UK and have also added Segway experiences, Tree Top Junior Adventures and at one site a zip wire adventure. Lucky for us the Sherwood Pines location has the Tree Top Adventure for 10 years and above, the Tree Top Junior for 6-10 years, and the Forest Segway. News From The National

National Students Celebrate In Style At 2016 Prom

Creative Talent On Display

Students from the National Church of England Academy celebrated the end of their exams in typically glamourous style at their 2016 Prom. The glitzy event, held at Goosedale in Papplewick, heralds the culmination of students’ time at the Academy, and over 150 students and staff arrived to join in the celebrations. Everyone was dressed to impress and arrived in a spectacular array of transport from sports cars, to camper vans, to double decker buses and even a spectacular horse drawn carriage. The wonderful event was a fitting send off for the students, with a great turnout making it a truly memorable occasion for all who attended.

The inaugural Art, Design and Technology exhibition, showcasing the superb range of work done by students across a number of year groups, took place in June. The exhibition showcased outstanding projects ranging from architecture design projects, engineering, to ceramics work and paintings, all attendees agreed that the quality of work on display was of a very high standard. Mr Giles, Design Technology teacher at the Academy commented, “The students have done a fantastic job with the exhibition. Their displays represented many hours of effort and some outstanding creative talent and it was a joy to share this with parents and the students’ peers. We are now looking forward to an even bigger and better show in 2017; Art, Design and Technology is flying high at National.”

On Thursday 7th of July Year 5 students visiting from our primary feeder schools took part in Football in the Community provided by Notts County Football Club. Football in the Community are proud to deliver a range of innovative programmes that make a positive difference to people in Nottingham, raising aspirations and supporting talented people across the city. They use the power of football and the profile of the world’s oldest football league club, Notts County FC, to provide direction and support. This event was organised by local Cllr. John Wilmott and we would like to thank John for providing The Holgate Academy and prospective Holgate students with this exciting opportunity. The Year 5 students represented themselves, their primary schools and Holgate well and we are very proud to be working with such well-behaved students. It is an absolute privilege to work with our primary feeder schools in Hucknall and Bestwood, our partnership in the Holgate Family of Schools is vital to providing an exceptional transition programme from primary to secondary school for the youngsters.

kids The Flying High Trust hosts super-sized sports competition!

Hucknall Sports Under 10's

Children from all over Nottinghamshire came together at Harvey Hadden Sports Village for a super-sized sports event prompted by children from The Flying High Trust Children’s Parliament.

Hucknall Sports Unders 10's hoped to continue where they left off last year with strong team performances and good results… And what a season they had!!

Nick Layfield, Project Manager for the Flying High Trust said that the event was one of a series that the Trusts’ Children’s Parliament and local School Councils have worked on to find ways to work with and meet each other at inspirational events. The event saw a healthy dose of friendly competition between the participating schools which included Beeston Fields Primary & Nursery School, Peafield Lane Academy (Mansfield Woodhouse), Cotgrave Candleby Lane School, Greythorn Primary School (West Bridgford), Edwalton Primary School and Hillside Primary & Nursery School in Hucknall. Individual and team track and field events including javelin, speed bounce, long jump, triple jump, sprints and relays which all built to a grand finale that saw Edwalton Primary School take overall first place, with Cotgrave Candleby Lane and Peafield Lane Academy coming second and third. The highest performing girl and boy within each event were also recognised with awards.

Winning the winter league division with a 100% win rate and with a game to spare, also winning every single friendly game along the way. The spring league was more of a test but the boys were superb and won the division again for our 2nd champions trophy of the year and along the way did it with another 100% win rate. What an amazing achievement! Only loosing out in the cup semi-final with 4 minutes left, unfortunately they couldn’t quite achieve the result they deserved. That day the boys confirmed they can achieve and compete at the very highest level. A real team effort and by far their best season yet!!

EARLY SCHOOLS IN HUCKNALL part 1 One short lived effort to begin a school in Hucknall was made in 1647/48 by John Cantrell the minister. Fast forward 140 years to 1788 when the minute book of the Trustees of the Byron Charity agreed that ‘£8 per annum would be paid to George Green for his management of the Sunday School’. No person hereafter was to receive any charity if they did not send their children to the school. It was signed by, Lancelot Rolleston, John Newton, Thos. Hudson, Luke Jackson and H. Hankin. In 1819 the working day for juveniles was cut to 12 hours in England and in the same year a questionnaire was sent out to each parish by the government requesting information relating to the education of the poorer classes of children and details of any schools. The form for Hucknall was filled in by Chas. Nixon, Minister of the Parish Church. He gave the population as 1,793 and said there were “no endowments relating to the education of youth. There were however three schools containing 50 children and about 200 more attend Sunday schools.” He also observed that ‘from the badness of trade the children of labourers who are chiefly engaged in stocking manufacture are obliged to be content with Sunday schools’.

The Sunday School Movement had begun in the late 1700s. Most were organised by religious denominations. Attendance was voluntary and since the children worked long hours six days a week it is a wonder they went at all. Dedicated people at the Methodist New Connexion chapel on Annesley Road, Hucknall, were making valiant efforts to teach children on Sundays. At first the building used was a barn but later a stone meeting house with schools was erected on the site. There is an inscribed stone dated 1816 on the building which is now looking derelict and forlorn. It is hoped some good use could be made of such an important historic building. John Godber of Whyburn and James Ball of The Common sent an invitation to Frederick Ward who was conducting a school at Aslockton. In 1824 he came

at their request, to establish a school in Hucknall for the sons of the more affluent tenant farmers and small landowners. Money was raised for a state of the art building on a piece of land donated by the Duke of Portland. It was a fee paying boarding school. Slowly England was moving into a more industrial and commercial age and needed a better educated work force. From 1833 government grants were made available to erect ‘voluntary’ schools for the education of children from poorer classes. Many places have schools of the National Society or British & Foreign Schools Society in their history. Beardsmore says that there were several ‘dame’ schools in the parish around 1840 to 1850. At Broomhill one was kept by a Mr & Miss Dawn; one by Mr. Green opposite the Seven Stars and Mr. Edwards taught in the club room of the Half Moon Inn. It cost 2d or 3d a week at these premises but no evidence has been found relating to them. The Reverend Curtis Jackson was vicar of Hucknall in 1853. On 1st March 1853 he wrote to ask the committee of the National Society for assistance in creating a school in Hucknall. ‘The inhabitants of the parish are anxious to have a National School … We have £440 in hand and a site promised. We have also the option of purchasing an excellent house, schoolroom, and premises which originally cost £600, in a very eligible situation … There is a large and poor population with no schools at all adequate to the wants of the labouring classes’. The National Society did eventually approve the work and gave a grant of £60 and this together with a government grant of £404 ensured the new school could be paid for. A Royal Commission was appointed in 1858 to inquire into education in England and report on the measures required for elementary education. It found that the average length of schooling was about 4 years but that only one child in 7.7 attended school. The Commission recommended the system known as ‘Payment by Results’ which was based on regular attendance, decent buildings and a satisfactory report from the schools inspector. Robert Lowe was the man who put the findings into practise. He laid down standards to be attained in subjects like reading, writing and arithmetic - before any grant was paid. Hucknall National Mixed School came into this category. © Maureen Newton...MORE NEXT TIME
