2024 Programme

Welcome from Richard Mitchell, Chief Executive UHN & UHL

I am delighted to welcome you to the 2024 UHN Excellence Awards. Our annual awards are one of the most important dates in our calendar.

They give us an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of our colleagues and volunteers at UHN, and to also celebrate and reflect on the achievements of the past 12 months

We had almost 800 nominations for the awards this year which is a huge testament to the incredible impact our teams and colleagues have on patients, local communities, and each other. Selecting six shortlisted nominees in each of our award categories was not an easy task for our judges.

All the nominations received, and particularly those which were shortlisted, demonstrate there are examples of extraordinary care, compassion and kindness taking place every day in our hospitals.

To everyone nominated and shortlisted, I would like to congratulate you on your achievements and thank you for everything you do.

The humanity of his support has meant that his colleagues feel wanted, welcomed and supported.

She has a unique gift of being able to see an issue and explore on how this can be turned into a positive – working with her colleagues to make it happen.”

UHN Inspirational Volunteer of the Year Award

“Annemarie is one of our Brew Buddy volunteers bringing the wellbeing volunteer initiative to our staff on their shift wherever that may be within the Trust. She is a wonderful ambassador for volunteers wherever her drinks routes may take her.”

Barry Perrin

He always has a smile on his face and a positive, bubbly attitude and will always crack a joke if he feels like someone needs to be uplifted.”

Yvonne Thomson

“Yvonne became a volunteer after retiring as a surgical PA. Yvonne is a people person in the truest sense. She embodies Trust values- her compassion is endless. She champions for the patients and goes that extra mile. I have seen Yvonne sit and hold our patients’ hands, play cards with them or just sit and listen to them. She is a shining example of who we aspire to be.”

Hasan Alsararatee

“Hasan Alsararatee has demonstrated excellence in research and innovation through his numerous contributions, resulting in improved practice, better outcomes, and more efficient working methods at NGH. Hannah Sunter

“Hannah started in the department’s new role as Practice Development Lead last May. She has implemented the AHP Preceptorship programme for newly qualified AHPs and International recruits. Both programmes have shown that we are invested in our staff, and we want to support and develop their skills.”

Kalpana Lakhani

“Reflecting on her own family’s experience, Dr Lakhani identified an opportunity to improve the final journey from the ward to the Chapel of Rest. Rohan Bidaye

“Mr Bidaye has completed 100 patients in his TNO clinic held on Wednesdays at Kettering General Hospital. He has been doing injections into the voice box and the clinic has been running successfully. We are the first hospital in Northamptonshire, and one of only a few in the UK, to offer these procedures under local anaesthetic. Patients undergoing these procedures no longer require hospital admission.”

“What made her special was her ability to relate to all the poorly children, whatever their age. I watched her as she made time for each child and parent in the waiting area. She was fantastic with me and my daughter too, she explained everything but also engaged with us with good humour and talked to my teenage daughter about clothes and make up. She is a credit to the hospital and her profession.”

Nadia Tobierre (KGH nominee)

“Nadia’s compassionate nature is evident in every interaction she has with our dementia patients. She goes above and beyond to ensure that each patient is well looked after, providing personalized care that meets their individual needs. Ronnie Gee (KGH nominee)

“Ronnie took care of my daughter when she was critically ill in A&E before being transferred to QMC in Nottingham. She took such good care of my daughter that she wanted her to come with her to QMC, which sadly wasn’t possible! Ronnie embodies the KGH values, and you are incredibly lucky to have her as a nurse within your hospital. If Ronnie is shortlisted for this award, my daughter would love the opportunity to say thank you to her in person.”

Salam Musa (KGH nominee)

“Mr Musa deserves this nomination as he is the most caring, kind, and considerate man. He has made a huge difference to many lives, including mine. Everyone who comes into contact with him would say the same. Nothing is ever a problem. An absolute angel in disguise. He has done wonders in making the breast unit so successful.”

Toni Hancox (KGH nominee)

“She went above and beyond, not only to mum, but to every individual on Twywell Ward. I watched in awe as she took the time to get the patients whatever they needed or wanted. That maybe a cup of tea, but also hairspray, papers, fruit, sweets, nothing was too much trouble. She comforted both patients and relatives alike, brought humour, humanity, respect and dignity.”

UHN Patient Choice Award

Gosset Ward (NGH nominee)

“From the moment I was about to give birth there was a team of doctors on hand to look after my baby. I’ve never seen a team work so effortlessly together and support each other to ensure premature and sick babies are kept safe and well in their most vulnerable state. They are filled with positive energy and endless advice, and this really helped me to navigate my way through some of the toughest weeks.

Hasan Alsararatee (NGH nominee)

“Despite how busy the unit was Hasan kept me updated throughout my waiting times in SDEC. I can’t be thankful enough for his kind care. I see all his colleagues coming to him for advice and he is such gentleman. He is an excellent advanced nurse practitioner.”

Karen Frost (NGH nominee)

“Karen has made a massive impact on my son’s views about receiving care at NGH. Despite the obvious department pressures, Karen took the time to listen to my concerns and views and took the time to read his hospital passport and provide outstanding care. We had a seemingly uneventful visit that could have gone a totally different way had it not been for the care provided by Karen. Thank you.”

Marie Agg (NGH nominee)

“Marie seemed to know what you needed before you did. She always knew what to say and offered her support, whether it was offering parking permits, just taking a few minutes to chat to you, helping with questions or finding someone who could help. When I think back to the experience of my Grandad being on end-of-life care, the good has overshadowed the bad and Marie’s actions are something that my family and I all remember.

Pick Woo (NGH nominee)

“Dr Woo has been so reassuring and supportive throughout, taking away my fear by explaining everything so clearly. She even conducted a phone appointment with me when I was away in Italy, persevering with the call even when we initially couldn’t connect. Her kindness has been exemplary. I cannot thank her enough for her amazing care and support.”

Zoe Clark (NGH nominee)

“Every time we come to Dr Clark’s clinic she is always so understanding. Recently we came in for our eldest and explained the difficulties we were having, especially with the services she needs. She was so reassuring, she made us feel at ease, could see our pain, and her kind words stuck with us. She is just amazing.”

They peddled 3,432 miles – and climbed a total of 166,015ft – starting from Immingham and back to Kettering. Throughout they were always upbeat and modest about their achievement and the amount raised. At present over £25,000 has been raised with more money to be paid in.”

Emma Brennan and Mia Tysoe

“Both Emma and Mia actively take part in the suggested activities and whether or not taking part, are obviously so passionate about fundraising and doing general good for NGH. Mia not only helped make sure the Strictly NGH event was organised brilliantly and ran smoothly, but she was also a participant who spent 8 weeks training in her own time. A real dedication.”
