TE ŪKAIPŌ NGĀ RANGATAHI Ō NGĀRUAHINE RANGI 2021-2026 STRATEGY
He kōrero timatanga: About Te Ūkaipō: Ngā rangatahi ō Ngāruahine Rangi
Te Ūkaipō is a recognised rangatahi kaupapa within Ngāruahine Rangi and we hope to work in partnership with Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust, Ngāruahine Iwi Authority and hapu to deliver positive outcomes for our rangatahi. Our kaupapa is a “by rangatahi, for rangatahi” approach with the support of our whānau, hapu, and iwi.
Whakapapa: How Te Ūkaipō came about
Tātai hono:
In 2019 a Ngāruahine rangatahi dinner was called by Tātai Hono, which is a Ngāruahine Rangi iwi research project funded through Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and Waikato University. The research aimed to enable the best engagement between Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust and the people of Ngāruahine. Dr Dee Sciascia was a part of the Tātai Hono research project alongside Will Edwards and Arama Rata, all uri of Ngāruahine. Puawai Hudson, Te Wehi Wright, Kahurangi Chase, Te Raunatanga WilliamsEdwards, Tamaari Kupe-King, Hapeta Nuku, Keonte Ngatai and Wairingiringi Hemara-Wahanui were the rangatahi in attendance.
Rangahau:
Dr Dee Sciascia simultaneously had a research project 'Digital Solutions to Support Knowledge and Connection'. The primary aim was to review Māori and Indigenous approaches to developing and establishing digital platforms; both for knowledge storage, knowledge transfer and knowledge preservation. Puawai Hudson was contracted into this research and thus Te Ūkaipō was designed, developed and brought to life.
Te Ūkaipō
Te Ūkaipō started as a ‘virtual ātea’. There was a passion within rangatahi for te ao Māori and a desire to create a safe and interactive platform to inspire innovative discussion amongst our people. The vision of Te Ūkaipō has always been to transfer the knowledge systems and whakaaro from the 'virtual ātea' to our marae ātea.
Key drivers of starting Te Ūkaipō:
There were no rangatahi focused kaupapa ā iwi within Ngāruahine Rangi, many of our rangatahi today remain disconnected to our iwi, we wanted to encourage our rangatahi to come to the pā as kanohi kitea, we wanted to create safe spaces for our rangatahi, for our rangatahi to be proud to be uri of Ngāruahine and to advocate for the intergenerational succession of our iwi.
He kaupapa: Purpose
This document sets out the strategic direction for the Te Ūkaipō Kaupapa (ngā rangatahi ō Ngāruahine) for the next five years. The aim is to ensure that we remain focused on delivering the outcomes aligned to our strategic priorities.
Whilst Te Korowai ō Ngāruahine Trust, Ngāruahine Iwi Authority and hapu have various strategic goals, the kaupapa of Te Ūkaipō is strategically focused on building sustainable connections to whenua, uri and other kaupapa relative to the priorities of this strategy. We aim to accomplish this by strengthening whakawhanaungatanga, upholding the mana motuhake of Ngāruahine Rangi, building rangatahi capabilities, understanding connection as tangata whenua, and ensuring that our engagement with relative entities and people(s) are contributing positively towards our rangatahi being proud uri of Ngāruahine Rangi and the implementation of intergenerational succession of our whanau, hapu and iwi.
