HE MIHI NĀ TE TUMU WHAKARAE

Tēnā koutou e te iwi! Kua tere haere te wā. Kāore e roa, ka taka te kaupeka o Ngahuru ki runga i te whenua. Ko te tumanako e ora pai tonu ana koutou ki o koutou nei kāinga.

Ngahuru holds on to the warm weather as we all prepare further, for the presence of Hine Takirua and farewell Hine Raumati again.

We have not rested on our laurels during the mainstream holiday period. Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Board issued their position statement regarding the Coalition Government Policy Agenda in Hakihea. Making it clear that they will collaborate with any government to ensure that the aspirations of our people become a reality, when appropriate.

Nevertheless, the Board has also recognised that the policy agenda will negatively impact Māori communities, including Ngāruahine. They’re particularly concerned about issues such as the Fast Track Consenting Process diluting tangata whenua voice in a system that

is already challenging, the importance of upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it stands and the use of Te Reo Māori as a vital means of communication between Te Korowai and all branches of Central Government. These priorities are at the forefront of the Board’s agenda and are central to our tari operations.

Te Korowai o Ngāruahine has committed to supporting hapū, marae and uri to understand the Policy Agenda and how the effects may be felt in everyday life. We have joined the motu in the various hui ā motu that have taken place, however, the work doesn’t stop there e te whānau. We have two remaining “Te Tiriti and I” wānanga to deliver regarding this kaupapa, Toitū te Whenua and Toitū te Tangata. These wānanga are designed to provide kai for the various hapū and marae kete and contribute to everyone’s pathways to oranga. They will also inform the suite of challenges we pose to lay before the government in the near future.

Our uri were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend this one-day wānanga at Kanihi Marae on 8 Huitanguru (February) 2024. The wānanga was facilitated by Te Wehi Wright with the purpose of offering education about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it may relate to us today within our many contexts. The wānanga provided a space for our uri to learn, share, and discuss Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Of interest were the historical accounts regarding Te Tiriti that were offered by our pāhake and kaumātua who were present at the wānanga, along with a resounding emphasis on the fact that we hold the answers to our future - kei a mātou te mana!

Tēnā koe Te Wehi i tō hokinga mai ki te kāinga, me te whāngai i ēnei kōrero hei hāpai i ngā uri, ngā marae, ngā hapū o Ngāruahine.

On 4 Huitanguru, a busload of Ngāruahine uri, accompanied by a convoy of cars, left Te Hāwera, bound for Waitangi. The purpose of the four-day haerenga was to tautoko the kaupapa at Waitangi on 5 and 6 Huitanguru while having the opportunity to hear the kōrero presented at the Waitangi Forum Tent. Many of the uri who participated had never been to Waitangi before. Many who attended had an average knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi prior to the haerenga. Following the haerenga, these uri acknowledged that they now have a more in-depth understanding of Te Tiriti, felt more confident talking about it, and appreciated being there to learn more about the hau kāinga and the whenua.

TUPUA TE MAURI TAIAO

The government’s 100-day plan has meant that a variety of legislations that affect our Taiao have been removed, changed, or introduced. The Resource Management Act is under review, Te Mana o Te Wai has been removed and the fast track consenting bill has been introduced. Our Taiao team are working with Ngā Iwi o Taranaki to ensure Iwi are heard, and our voices considered at the table.

Of note, Pou Taitarā Taiao, Ngatokoa Tikitau went on a haerenga with Oregon State University researchers who have research interests in Tohorā - blue whales. We are eager to further develop this relationship going forward.

And finally, Tupua te Mauri were successful in acquiring freshwater research and capability funding to be implemented over the next few years. We are excited to work with hapū to support their freshwater aspirations.

Te Pōkaitahi Reo ki Ngāruahine: Kaupae Tuatahi me te Tuarua.

2023 was a very successful year for ākonga beginning their reo journey with Te Whare Kōrero o Ngāruahine and in partnership with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. The following statistics show 2023 kaupae tuatahi and tuarua results; and the numbers of eligible uri who can graduate with a National Certificate in Te Reo Māori Level one, and or Level Two.

2023 ENROLMENT DATA:

Kaupae Tuatahi: 24 ākonga completed the 6 month course. Kaupae Tuarua: 21 ākonga completed the 6 month course. 11 uri completed both kaupae tuatahi and tuarua.

TE PŌKAITAHI REO KI NGĀRUAHINE 2024

This year started on 12 Huitanguru (February) with 37 ākonga enrolled in kaupae tuatahi. Ākonga are currently working on a group assessment for Mana Reo, where they learn and deliver a karakia and waiata, and share kōrero about each composition, the composer and historical kōrero. On the 12-14 Paenga-whāwhā (April) we will gather at Aotearoa Pā for the first of two wānanga, where they will complete their second assessment, Mana Tangata. We wish all the ākonga the best as they take up this challenge of learning te reo o ngā mātua tūpuna.

Enrolments for kaupae tuarua – level two are still open for uri who are wanting to further their skills and knowledge. You should contact Katrina Taylor by emailing: pokaitahireo@gmail.com.

Kia māia te tū, kia kaha te mahi, kia rere te reo

WHĀNAU DAY

Our 2023 Whānau Day was held on 9 Hakihea (December) 2023 at Wai o Rua, Whakaahurangi. Over 400 uri of all ages attended this amazing event. A bus was provided this year to help our uri travel to and from the venue, which many of our kaumātua made the most of. Games and activities were held throughout the day, organised and run by our Te Ūkaipō rangatahi. We take this opportunity to thank the Ngāruahine Women’s Rugby League Club who ran our BBQ this year – ka mau te wehi!

3B FITNESS BOOTCAMP

In Kohitātea (January), we began a trial fitness bootcamp program with a select group of rangatahi at 3B Fitness Centre.

So far, it’s been incredibly wellreceived by our rangatahi. We’re considering continuing this initiative and involving more uri in the future.

HAERENGA KI PŌNEKE

Early in the year, Te Ūkaipō coordinated and facilitated a haerenga ki Te Panepane o te Ika. This haerenga focused on strengthening relationships among the rangatahi and building connections with other Ngāruahine rangatahi who live in Pōneke. Our rangatahi gained understanding and knowledge of our Ngāruahine connections to Te Panepane o te Ika via kōrero tuku iho and visiting the memorial at Pukeahu for our tūpuna who passed while in the custody of the government of the day. Additionally, our rangatahi gained further understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi by visiting the “He Tohu” exhibition and participating in a “Te Tiriti and I” session with Te Wehi Wright.
