We are excited to announce the launch of Ngā Rere Ngā Rere will be a premium 18-room immersive cultural experience on our tūpuna maunga Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Board made the decision to review the trading name of the development, which was decided against the following criteria:
a. Align with the approved narrative developed with Hapū and uri, and the designed tohu
b. Appropriate for commercial application, across all services and branded goods (avoids the commercialisation of ingoa tūpuna or kaupapa hōhonu)
c. Applicable to a broader range of tourism offerings if needed (which may or may not be located on the Maunga)
There were two key matters that led to this decision to review First, a clearer understanding of the commercial application of the name and brand on goods and services. Secondly, the Board discussed the relativity of the protected use of Te Kāhui Tupua under the recent Taranaki Maunga Settlement Bill to the significance of Te Rere o Kapuni. It also raised Wai 262 considerations for the protection and nurturing of Taonga Māori.
In consideration of the above and while keeping an authentic foundation – the suggestion was made to simply name it Ngā Rere . This is inspired by the various rere of significance within Ngāruahine, including Te Rere o Kapuni, without bringing unwanted attention to specific wāhi tapu
As we move into impact investments, we want Ngāruahine to be heard and seen in our takiwā, however, these are still commercial applications. We will be out visiting our hapū to discuss this decision and the development of broader naming conventions.
