DuringhisfirsttwoyearsattheUniversitySkorokhodwasinterestedinthetheoryoffunctionsofcomplexvariables,functionalanalysis.Thiswasnotsurprising becauseatthattimeattheInstituteofMathematicsinKievtherewereoutstanding specialistsonfunctionalanalysis:brothersMarkGrigorievichKreinandSelimGrigorievichKrein,andMarkAlexandrovichKrasnoselskiwhosestudentAnatoliiwas consideredforsometime.Howeverby1950,allofthemwereforcedtoleaveKiev intheongoingbattleagainsttheso-called“rootlesscosmopolitans”(thiswasthe officialnameofanti-Semetizm).ThustherewasnoavailablementorforAnatolii inthisfield.FollowingtheadviceofhisfriendVolodyaMikhalevich,Skorokhod decidedtospecializeinthetheoryofprobability.
