Preface TheMediterraneanandMiddleEastregionislocatedatacrossroadofglobalclimatepatterns. Thereisaconvergencebetweenvariousmaritimeconditionsanddifferentcontinentalair massesfromtheadjacentextensivelandswhichleadstodiverseclimatesoverthisregionin viewoftheextremedifferencesintopographicalfeaturesandatmosphericconditions.In spatialscale,variousclimateandenvironmentalparametersvaryconsiderablyacrossthe MediterraneanandMiddleEastandevenwithincountries.Intemporalscale,therearesignificantclimateandenvironmentalchangesoccurringoverthepastthousandsofyears. Generally,theMediterraneanandMiddleEastarecharacterizedbyhotandaridclimate, alreadyintolerableforhumanbeingsinmanyparts.Furthermore,globalwarmingiscausing seriouswaterscarcity,heatwaves,andothernaturaldisastersacrossthisregiontodayandin thenearfuture.Inordertomakesuitablemitigationandadaptationmeasures,itiscritically importanttostudyhowclimateandenvironmentintheMediterraneanandMiddleEasthave changedacrossawiderangeoftimescalessothatwecanbetterassesstheimpactsoffuture climateandenvironmentalchangesacrossthisregion.Unfortunately,atpresent,the MediterraneanandMiddleEasthavenotbeendeeplyinvestigatedandassessedyet,compared withotherregionsoftheworldsuchasEuropeandNorthAmerica.

Paleoceanographyquicklyevolvedintothe firstbranchof historicgeosciencesthatdevelopedandemployedstrictly quantitativeproxydataandaquantitativeagescaleto tracepastoceanscenariosperanalogytotheparameters usedtostudythemodernoceanandtofeedmodel simulationsofmodern,past,andfutureoceanscenarios. Thepresentarticleoutlinedsomemilestonesand ‘heroes’ thathelpedtopromotetheamazingevolutionofthis novel fi eldofearthsciences.

3SampleBasistoGainEmpiricProxyData fromDeep-SeaSediments SinceKullenberg[8],thepistoncorerformedthebackbone forasuccessful,thoughinpartsomewhatdistortedsampling ofdeep-seasediments.Intheearly1950s,M.Ewing,LDGO (“apistoncorerbringsupsamplesoftheocean floorjustasa housewifecoresanapple”)orderedRVVemaandother vesselstotakeatleastonepistoncoreaday.Afterfew decadesthisorderresultedinthespectacularLamontcollectionofthousandsofsedimentcores.Similareffortswere madeinMiami/Florida.Also,theinternationalDSDP/ODP/ IODPprojectstartedtogainhundredsof(hydraulicpiston androtary)coresfromwell-selectedhemipelagicsediment sitesintheoceansince1967.Germanvesselsstartedto samplesedimentsintheEastAtlanticandIndianoceansin themid1960s,laterintheglobalocean.1995,Frenchcolleagues(Y.Balut)developedthenew Calypso techniqueto retrievemostadvancedlongpistoncoresonboardofN.S. MarionDufresne,successfullyemployedbyaninternational projectcalledIMAGES.
4GreatAdvancesinthe1970sand1980s Duringthesedecades,fourprominentcolleaguesespecially markedtheevolutionofpaleoceanography.W.H.Berger (SIO)establishedpioneeringresultsontheproductivityand preservationofcalcareous-shelledplanktonicforaminifera andtheiruseforpaleoceanographicproxies.Hedocumented thatdifferentialshellpreservationreflectstheprinciplesof deep-seacarbonatepreservation,thecalcitecompensation depth(CCD),andtheoceaniccarboncycleingeneral,a milestoneinpaleoceanography.HestartedtomapTertiaryCCDshiftsintheEastAtlanticanddevelopedthe principlesofPaci ficversusAtlanticbasin-to-basinfractionationincarbonatedeposition.Intheearly1980s,heoutlined thejointroleofdenitri fication,changesintheratioof carbon/carbonate ‘rain’,andthebuildupofshelfcarbonates duringthedeglacialtransgressionthatmayhavedelivered considerablechangesinatmosphericCO2.
N.J.Shackleton(Cambridge,UK)shapedanddominated paleoceanographyasaphysicist,eventhoughhisfather(a prominentpetrologist)hadtriedtokeephimawayfrom geosciences,suggestinghimtodo ‘somethingproper ’ in physics.Sohedevelopedamassspectrometerformeasuring stableoxygenandcarbonisotopes(d18O, d13C)onminute masssamplesofforaminiferatests,10–100timessmaller thanwithconventionalmassspectrometry,atechnical
milestone.Onthisbasis,Shackletonfurtherevolvedthe ingenuousapproachofC.Emiliani(Miami)togenerate recordsofforaminiferaisotopesindeep-seacoresasaproxy ofglacial-to-interglacialclimatechange.Mostimportant, Shackletonfound(and finallyconvincedEmilianihimself) thatamajorportionofthe d18Osignalwastiedtopast changesinglobalicevolumeratherthantochangesin ambienttemperatureandsalinity.
Inthiswayhecreatedanoveltracerofpastchangesin globalicevolume,aglobaltracerofsealevelchangeand agecontrol,soonabackboneofCLIMAPstratigraphy.Hays etal.[4]succeededtotunepast d18OrecordstoMilankovitchorbitalparameters,thenjustrecalculatedbyBerger ([9];Belgium),aneffortthatresultedina firstastronomical agescaleofoceanandclimateevents,attheonsetatruly utopicvision,shortlyafterproposedasagemodelforthelast 100My(U.S.SPECMAPproject).Asaclarinetistand genuineexpertinmusicanditsphysicalbasicsShackleton firstemployedspectraltheoryandinterferencesinorbital cyclicitytoderivetheforcingsofvariousclimaticparametersoverthePleistocene.Priortoicecorerecords,acontroversialquestionwasfocusedontheamountofclimate variabilitypossiblycontrolledbyorbitalforcing:Hasselmann(MPIHamburg)believedinzero(chaos),Imbrie estimated65%,Herterich(MPIHamburg)38%.
AclosefriendofImbrie,W.S.Broecker(LDEO)wasthe greatpacemakerofoceanbiogeochemistry,inparticular,the carbonchemistryandits d13Candradiocarbonrecords(14C) astracersofpastvariationsintheOcean ‘SalinityConveyor Belt’ or ‘MeridionalOverturningCirculation’ (MOC)[10, 11].Amongsthistextbooksthe ‘TracersintheSea’ (1982) [12]formsastandardreferencethathasenduredinpopularityuptotoday.His findings,definitions(e.g.,of ‘Heinrich Events’),andconceptswerebasicfortheworkofgenerationsofpaleoceanographers.
LikeShackleton,J.-C.Duplessy(LSCEneartoParis) startedtoanalyzestableisotopesbothinspeleothemsandin oceanwatersandforaminiferaasearlyasinthelate1960s. ofLGMdeep-waterformation.Since1985,Duplessyand E.BardevolvedaspacemakersofmarineAMS-14C stratigraphy,whichinvolvedanovelproblem,theconversionofmarine 14Cagestothecalendaragescale(inpart, alsoledtoheateddiscussions).
Atthesametime,variousEnglishcolleaguescontributed substantialnewtoolsandinsightstopaleoceanography. G.Eglinton(Bristol)developedfrombiomarkersawhole ‘shoppinglist’ ofnewmoleculartools,mostimportant, ‘Uk37’,anewmastertracerofSST(since1986)[14].
I.N.McCave(Cambridge)recordedwithcurrentmeters ‘deep-seastorms’ inthedeepAtlanticand firstdefined ‘sortedsilt’ asproxytoestimatepastbottomcurrentspeeds. H.Elder fi eld(Cambridge)pioneeredthelinksbetween seawaterchemistry(e.g.,definingSrandrareearthsas proxiesofoceanwatercomposition)andclimatechange. Also,hepresentedadiagramonthreesuccessivephasesin assessingpaleoceanographicproxies:Anoverlyoptimisticis followedbyanoverlypessimisticand finally,apragmatic view.E.Rohling(Southampton)speci fiedthelong-term variationsofglobalsea-levelonthebasisof d18Osignalsin theRedSea.
5SomeContributionsofKielUniversity (Germany) TheteamofmarinegeologyinKielwasfoundedandorientedbyE.Seibold,amostprominentGermanpioneerin this field,wellknownforthetextbookofSeiboldandBerger [4thed., 15].OneofSeibold’slastPhDstudents,H.Heinrich,laterdiscoveredtinylayersofdolomitedebrisinLate PleistocenesedimentsoftheEastAtlantic,thebasisfor Broecker ’sideatousehisnamefortheterm ‘Heinrich Events’ thatrecordshorteventsofmeltingicebergarmadas. Inthelate1980s,thepaleoceanographers’ groupKiel Universitywasenlargedsignificantlybythefoundationof GEOMAR,anewresearchinstitutionthatimpliedbothnew laboratoryfacilitiesandmanynewpositionsforyoung scientists.
Intheearly1980s,majorprogresswasmadeinacceleratingtheanalysesofstableisotopesofforaminiferaby developingthe ‘KielCarboprepDevice’ thatenablesan automatedcarbonatepreparation(H.Erlenkeuserin coop.withFinniganMAT).Onthebasisofalmosthundred epibenthic d18Oand d13Crecordsfromtheeasternand centralAtlanticthegroupofSarnthein fi rstdefinedparametersthatcharacterizecoastalupwelling(G.Ganssen), MediterraneanOutflowWaters(R.Zahn),andinparticular, threedifferentstatesofAtlanticMOCforLGM-to-Holocene times[16].Later,W.Curry(WoodsHole,US)continued thisapproachonthebasisofWestAtlantic d13Crecords [17].Orbital-scale d18Ostratigraphyofhundredsof
sedimentcoresservedasbackboneforocean-widemapsof glacial-to-interglacialchangesinplanktonproductivityand, mostimportant,for ‘GLAMAP2000’,ajointprojectofKiel, Bremen,andAWIBremerhaven,thatrevisedtheSST patternsofCLIMAPfortheLGM,nowmonitoredat275 sitesintheAtlantic[18].Later,theSSTestimateswere incorporatedintoaninternationalMARGOprojectto assembleglobalSSTmaps(M.Kucera,Bremen).Moreover, Nürnberg([19];GEOMARKiel)re-assessedMg/Cain foraminiferaasproxyofwatermasstemperatures,nowadays widelyacceptedasmastertracer.PastSSTpatternsforman indispensablebasisforthetestofclimatemodels,the importanceofwhichforthepredictionoffutureclimate scenariosiseverincreasing.
ImportantKielcontributionswerebasedonresultsof AMS 14Cdating(P.M.Grootes):Major 14Cexcursions duringLaschampandothermagneticeventshelpedto quantifythecontemporaneousriseof 14Cradioactivityinthe surfaceocean[20].Planktic 14Cplateausweretunedto atmospheric 14Cplateaus,thusstartedtoserveasnovel tracerofcentennial-scaleagecontrol.Benthic 14Cventilationageswererevealedastracertoquantifythecarbon dissolvedinoceandeepwaters(Sarnthein).
Kielpaleoceanographersfocusedonpastvariationsofthe northernNorthAtlantic,a ‘switchboard’ ofglobalMOC [21],butalsoprovided firstlinesofevidenceforNorth Paci ficdeep-waterformationduringtheLatePliocene[22] andearlydeglacials(Sarnthein;J.Rae,SaintAndrews), reflectingacurrentregimemarkedlydifferentfromthatof today.Basicstudiesilluminatedtheshort-termPleistocene variabilityofIndian,SEAsianand,mostrecently, Australianmonsoons(e.g.,W.KuhntandA.Holbourn;in coop.withPX.Wang,Shanghai).Finally,therecordsprovidedproofforlinkagesbetweentheLatePlioceneonsetof majorglaciationofGreenlandandthe finalclosureof CentralAmericanSeaways.
Sincethemid-1980s,alumniofKielUniversitystarted powerfulgroupsofpaleoceanographersatBremenUniversity(G.WeferandW.H.Berger)andtheAlfred-Wegener Institute(AWI)inBremerhaventhatdevelopedwithgreat successlarge-scaleprojectsonthePlio-Pleistocenehistory oftheSouthAtlanticandthepolaroceans(e.g.,R.Gersonde andR.Steinreconstructedpastchangesinseaicecoveron thebasisofnovel floralandbiogeochemicalproxydata).

The finest tobacco the country could produce, and the cleanest pipes (for she had a new one almost as often as a fop puts on new gloves), could hardly satisfy her fastidiousness; and I have known her footman get as many scoldings as there were days in the week on that score. From curiosity, I once counted a bundle of pipes, thrown by after a day or two’s use, any one of which would have fetched five or ten shillings in London, and there were one hundred and two.
