What IsAnHerb?

Sowhat’s anherb?Theanswer depends uponwhoyouask.Abotanistwill sayit’s aplantthat grows aboveground that doesn’t have a woody stem. A chef might say that it’s a seasoning ingredientfromatemperateclimate,unlikeaspice,whichcomesfromatropical climate.

For the purposes of this book, I’ll refer to anherb as anyuseful plant that we use for healing. For example, dandelion is a useful plant for the gall bladder and the liver, so I’ll call it an herb.

Usually, herbs are not the main ingredients of cuisine, but they’re still important parts of the diet. Some powerful herbs, like maca, which is found in the Amazon rainforest, are eaten as standalonefoods,butmostherbsareusedasseasonings.

The best herbs are picked freshfromyour ownorganic garden. An herb garden might consist ofa pot ofherbs ona windowsill, or it could be a huge plot inyour backyard. For those who choose not to grow their own herbs, we’re fortunate that excellent quality herbs are now commerciallyavailable.Irecommendusingorganicherbsinall casesifpossible.

HowtoSelect Herbs

Ifyou’re goingto be purchasingdried herbs, it’s a good idea to learnto judge ifthey’re fresh. They should look vibrant in color and smell fresh. Some herbs retain their color better than others;withpracticeyou’ll learntorecognizegreatquality.

Most herbs have a shelf life of about one year. Keep them in a cool dark place, such as a cabinet, not in a spice rack over the stove. Whole herbs retain their freshness longer than powdered ones. Iuse whole dried herbs whenthey’re available, but freeze-dried herbs retain their flavor andcolor well,too.

Tools You’ll Need to Get Started

1.Coffee grinder

Youmayuse anelectric coffee grinder to prepare herbs. Don’tuse itfor coffee, though, since coffee has a strong aroma and can taint your herbs. Likewise, the herbs you grind in a coffee grinder could end up flavoring your coffee. Imagine peppermint-flavored coffee; it’s not exactlyabreakfasttasteyouwouldwant,right?

Keepseparatecoffeegrindersfor coffeeandherbssothatthey’ll bothtasteastheyshould.

2.Garlicpress

This is another useful tool in addition to pressing garlic, it’s fabulous for crushing fresh gingerroot.

3.Mortarandpestle

Ifyouuse freshherbs, these are veryuseful. Plus, it’s satisfyingto pound the herbs and inhale their aromas.

4.Darkjars

Collectand reuse jars inassorted sizes. They’ll come inhandyfor some ofyour remedies. Be suretolabel your products whenyoucreatethem,lestyougetthemmixedup.Thebestjars are dark, because theykeep lightfromoxidizingthe herbs. Herbs stored inclear jars won’tlastas longasthosestoredindarkjars.

5.Anherbjournal

Keep a small notebookinyour kitchenfor detailingthe herbs and herbal mixtures thatyoutry. When you find one that’s really successful, make a note of it so you can go back and find it whenyouneeditagain.

How Herbs Are Consumed

Herbs maybe consumed ina varietyofways, includingas pills, capsules, liquids and syrups. Manyother formsareavailableaswell.

Sometimes the method of administration is just as important as the effects that come fromthe plant. For example, suppose you had a harried day rushing around, doing too many tasks at once. The best medicine in this example might be a relaxing herbal blend. It could be administered as a tablet or capsule, but it would be better to consume it as a tea, sitting in a comfychair withyour feetup.

The StandardInfusion

Somethingthatyou’ll see fairlyofteninthis bookis the phrase “standard infusion.” To make a standard infusion, simply pour one cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon of dried herbs or 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs (just increase the amount of herbs and water proportionally if you want a larger batch). Cover and let sit for 20 minutes.After the 20 minutes is over, strainthe herbsoutanddrinktheresultingtea.That’sit!

MakinganHerbalDecoction

A decoction is similar to a tea, except that it’s simmered slowly in a pot for at least 20 minutes. This makes the herb more potent. Usuallythe rootparts ofthe plants are decocted, as it takes time to extract all of the goodness out of them. The decoction recipe that follows is consideredadecoctioninfusion,whichisusedtomakeateaoutofroots,seedsandberries.

To make a standard decoction, justsimmer 1 teaspoonofdried herbs or 1 tablespoonoffresh herbs in 1 cup of water for 20 minutes. You can also make it stronger by adding more herbs. Youmightfindthatmakinguptoaquartor twoatatimeiseasier thanasinglecup.

HowHerbsHealYou

Herbs heal inmanyways.Their aromas are healing.The beautyofthe plants is comfortingand sometimes breath-taking. Herbal medicine is best taken with awareness of the herbs themselves.

While some herbs work very quickly, many herbal medicines take time to work. Rather than suppressinga symptom, theyworkbystrengtheningthe body. Herbal medicine cansometimes take longer than conventional remedies to work; however, they provide long-lasting benefits thatconventional preparationsdonot.

One of the most common ways that people use herbs is in an infusion, as described above. Infusions are made withflowers, stems, and leaves. There are a varietyoftea strainers onthe marketthatyoucanusefor thispurpose.Youmayalsopurchaseateaball toputtheherbsinor

make your own tea bags with self-closing commercial bags. Another alternative is to put the herbsinacoffeefilter andtiewithstringtomakelittleteabags.

After makinganinfusion, you’ll have some soaked herbs leftover. Istronglyrecommend using the spentherbs for compost. Byreturningthe used herbs to the earth, you’re nourishingitas it nourishes you. Herbs are anexcellentadditionto compostpiles, as theycontainminerals, and manyherbsalsohelptoactivateyour compostpiletodecomposehotter andfaster.

Herbsare MultifacetedandStrengthenMultiple BodySystems

Choosing the right herb depends to a certain degree on identifying a specific system of the body to strengthen. However, many herbs strengthen several systems simultaneously, so in a way,youcan’tgowrongonceyouhavethebasicknowledgedown!

For example,let’s saythatyoufall andendupwitha woundonyour knee.You’daskyourself, “What systems of the body need strengthening?” The answer would be the integumentary system (skin), the musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones), and the immune system (to preventinfection).

On the other hand, let’s say your daughter has the beginning signs of a urinary tract infection. You’d ask yourself, “What systems of the body should I strengthen?” This time, the answer would be the kidneys, urinarytract, and immune system. See how easythis is?Youcanmake smartdecisionsbasedonthiswayofthinking.Alotofitisjustbasedoncommonsense.

The Components of the Nervous System

The nervous systemis the master communicationcenter ofthe body. For years itwas believed to consist of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and it was thought to be an electrical system similar totelephonewires.

Inthe old view of the nervous system, a message could originate fromanypart of the body. It would then travel though the nerves to the brain, resulting in an action or thought. We now understand that the nervous system goes beyond this simple explanation. The nervous system consists of hundreds of chemical messengers throughout the body, all interacting and moderatingeachother inaverycomplicatedsystem.

How Do Herbs Improve Nervous System Functioning?

Herbs are useful in promoting the health of the nervous system in a variety of ways. For example, they provide nourishment and protection for nerves. They also help ease migraine andsinusheadaches,andtheycanhelpyoufocuswhenyou’refeelingabitfoggy.

Herbs thatimprove nervous systemfunctioningfall intotwogroups: nervine,or calming,herbs andstimulantherbs,whichenhanceenergyandgiveyouamental lift.

Energizing and Relaxing Herbs

Chamomile (Matricariarecutita,Matricariachamomilla,Anthemisnobilis)

When you feel as if you need something to calmyou down or help you relax, chamomile is a goodchoice.

Thoughit’s always the flower ofthe plantthat’s used for creatingremedies, there are different types of chamomile that herbalists commonly use. For nervous system health, I like to use German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilia. It’s an easy herb to grow, and it’s great for childrenaswell.Germanchamomileisanannual plantthatlikesfull sun.

Chamomile may reduce stress and discomfort, and it’s useful for digestive health. It’s also soothingfor teethingandcolickybabies.

Basil(Ocimumbasilicum)

Basil is tasty and packed with health benefits! It aids concentration and relaxation. Did you know thatbasil hasbeenusedtorelieveanxietyandheadaches?

Basil actually benefits the whole body. It has anti-inflammatory actions similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. This action could come in handy when, for example, your son has fallen and hurt his elbow and it’s already inflamed and reddenedbythe time yousee him.Or itcouldbe useful whenyour grandmother is complaining about the aches and pains in her joints. There are many other examples of when antiinflammatoryherbscouldbeused.

Basil helps regulate blood sugar levels, can relieve spasms, and benefits the circulatory system, too. Besides addinggreatflavor to your food, basil is a richsource ofvitaminsAand C,andhasabundantamountsofmagnesium,ironandpotassium.

Historically, this herb has been used as an aphrodisiac and an antidepressant. (This makes perfectsense,sincesomeonewhoisdepressedcertainlyisn’tinaromanticmood!)

Basil is also quite aromatic, and there are different variations of it, such as cinnamon basil, lemon basil and Thai basil. Check out each one of these for some interesting flavors while cooking.

Nutmeg(Myristicafragrans)

Nutmeg is used for a lot more than eggnog. Did you know that nutmeg has been used since ancient times as a braintonic? Whenever the Greeks or Romans felt a little mentallysluggish, theywould use nutmegto perkthemselves up, bothmentallyand intellectually. Theyprobably didn’t know they were improving their nervous systemfunctions, but they did know that they feltbetter after takingit.

Modern science has shown us that nutmeg possesses substances that may relieve stress and anxiety,andit’saneffectivesleepaid.Italsohasantibacterial andmusclerelaxanteffects. Nutmegshould onlybe used insmall amounts. Pregnant womenmaywishto avoid nutmeg, as itmaybelinkedtomiscarriage.Nutmegcontainscopper,iron,potassiumandmagnesium.

Peppermint (Menthapiperita)
