airline updates Etihad boosts Jakarta flights Etihad Airways is to increase the frequency of its Abu Dhabi – Jakarta flights from seven to 14 per week. The addition of the new daily flight on October 27, 2013 will double the number of Boeing 777-300ER services operated by Etihad Airways between Abu Dhabi and Jakarta and will bring to 20 the number of weekly flights offered in partnership with Garuda Indonesia.

Cathay Pacific Brand New business Class Amenity Kits As part of Cathay Pacific‘s continued redevelopment and enhancement of their in-flight offering, the airline announced today the launch of their new business class amenity kit for flights to and from Hong Kong. In a move familiar around the world, the airline has partnered with a beauty house, this time featuring products from Jurlique, a renowned Australian natural skincare brand. Signature products such as Day Cream, Citrus Hand Cream and Lip Care Balm will be offered dependant on the flight and interestingly, the sex of the passenger. Also the direction of the flight alters the contents, with the Jurlique products changing dependant whether you travel to or from Hong Kong.

Lufthansa Group increased its adjusted operating result by 47 per cent in the first nine months of 2013. Excluding restructuring costs in connection with the Score program, totalling €168 million, and project costs for product improvements, some €30 million, the Group generated an operating profit of about €860 million in the period from January to September. This is an increase of around €280 million compared with the adjusted result for the same period last year. Including the project and restructuring costs, the operating result for the first nine months came to around €660 million. In the same period last year, the group recorded an operating result of €907 million.

Upon his return from Europe in 1897, HM King Chulalongkorn (Rama V 1868-1910) used his personal money to purchase orchards and paddy fields between Padung Krungkasem Canal and Samsen Canal for the construction of a royal garden which he named “the Dusit Garden.” The first permanent residence in Dusit Garden was Vimanmek Mansion, built in 1900 by royal command of HM King Rama V. The King had the Mundhat Ratanaroj Mansion Chudhadhuj Palace at Koh Sri Chang. Chonburi, dismantled and rebuilt in the Dusit Garden under the supervision of HRH Prince Narisra

Nuwadtiwongse. The celebration for the completion of Vimanmek Mansion was held on March 27, 1901. HM King Rama V then moved from the Grand Palace to stay permanently at Vimanmek Mansion for five years until the completion of Ambara Villa in 1906 where he lives until his demise in 1910. Vimanmek mansion was then closed down and members of the royal family returned to the Grand Palace. Near the end of HM King Rama VI (1910-1925)’s reign, he gave permission to Queen Consort Indrasakdi Sachi to stay at Vimanmek Mansion. After the King’s death, she moved to stay another residence in Suan Hong compound, north of Vimanmek Mansion, and the mansion was closed.
HM King Rama VII (1925-1934) renovated the mansion several times. In 1932, Vimanmek mansion was used only a storage place of the Bureau of the Royal Household. In 1982, on the auspicious occasion of the Bicentennial Anniversary of Bangkok, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who had discovered that Vimanmek Mansion; with its elaborate architectural style was still intact, asked permission of His Majesty the King (Rama IX) to renovate the mansion for use as a museum to commemorate HM King Rama V by displaying his photographs, personal art and handicrafts, and to serve as a showcase of the Thai national heritage for future generations. Vimanmek mansion is the world’s largest golden teakwood mansion with its elaborate architectural style reflecting a western influence. The building has two right-angled wings, each wing is 60 meters length and 20 meters height, and is three-storey except for the part where HM King Rama V resided, which is octagonal and four-storey. Although the ground floor is brick and cement, the upper floors are built of beautiful golden teakwood. Altogether, there are 31 exhibition rooms, with the bedroom, the throne room bathroom and pink rooms maintaining the atmosphere of the Thai past. Some display the exhibitions of Thai art including silverware, ceramics, crystal ware and ivory.
Besides Vimanmek mansion and Ambara villa in the compound of Dusit Garden (or Dusit Palace as it was later renamed by HM King Rama VI), HM King Rama V allocated plots of land for the construction of residences for his consort princesses, and younger sisters. He also named gardens, canals, gates and roads after the ancient Chinese ceramics (commonly called “Khrueng Kim Tung”), which were very popular at the time. Now, dependent buildings are also open and shown art objects. HRH Princess Puang Soi Sa-Ang Residential Hall This building was originally a residence of HRH Princess Puang Soi Sa Ang, one of H.M.King Chulalongkorn’s sisters. Presently, it is used to display old timepieces and souvenirs from foreign countries. HRH Princess Arun-Wadi Residential Hall H.M. King Chulalongkorn had this building constructed for his sister HRH Princess Arun Wadi. Now the building features displays of photographs taken by His Majesty the King. The Chinese Octagonal Dragon Pavilion The Chinese Octagonal Dragon Pavilion, the pedestal of Phra Puttabenjapitakthai (5 Guan-Im postures) presented to the present King on the occasion of The Golden Jubilee in 1996 by the Chailuekij family.

HRH Princess Bussaban Bua-Phan Residential Hall H.M.King Chulalongkorn had a residential hall built as a residence for his sister HRH Princess Bussaban Bua-Phan. Today, it is another building for displaying photographs by His Majesty the King. Krom Luang Vorased Thasuda Residential Hall This building was a residence of HRH Princess Bootri or her title name, Krom Luang Vorased Thasuda, a daughter of King Rama III. She brought up Princess Phra Thepsirin, Queen Mother of H.M. King Chulalongkorn. The King gave the same replace as if she was his grandmother. At present, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has graciously given Ban Chiang artifacts to be displayed here. It is an exhibition of prehistoric culture of the northeastern region of Thailand. HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over on January 9, 1999 HRH Princess Oradaya Debkanya Residential Hall This is residential hall, which HM King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) had built as a gift to his younger sister, HRH Princess Oradaya Debkanya.
It is now an exhibition building for displaying ancient textiles and silk cloth from the SUPPORT Foundation. “Tamnak Ho” (Newlyweds Mansion) “Tamnak Ho” is the first building in Bang Khun Phrom Palace, a palace of HRH Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu. At present, “Tamnak Ho” exhibits HM Queen Rambai Barni (Queen of King Rama VII)’s personal artifacts that were formally kept in Sukhothai Palace. The pottery exhibited is from shipwrecks and was made during the Sukhothai period. Suan Farang Kangsai Residential Hall The construction of this house, a brick and mortar building with a hip roof, started in 1908 and was completed the following year. It was originally the residence of Princess Dara Rasmi, a royal consort of H.M. King Chulalongkorn. There are three types of priceless art objects are exhibited, such as ceremonial decorations and paraphernalia, oil paintings, and porcelain.

พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆเป็นพระที่นั่งที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้น ในปี พ.ศ. 2443 โดยโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้รื้อย้ายพระที่นั่งมันธาตุรัตนโรจน์ จากพระจุฑาธุชราชฐานที่เกาะสีชัง มา ปลูกสร้างใหม่และ ทรงพระราชทานนามว่า “พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ” เนื่องจาก ในปี ร.ศ. 112 หรือ พ.ศ. 2436 ไทยเราเกิดกรณีพิพาทกับฝรั่งเศส ล้นเกล้า รัชกาลที่ 5 มีพระราชด�ำริว่า เป็นการไม่ปลอดภัยที่จะเสด็จไปเกาะสีชัง พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ เป็นพระที่นั่งถาวรองค์แรกในพระราชวังดุสิต สร้าง ด้วยไม้สักทองทั้งหลัง และนับว่าเป็นอาคารไม้สัก ทองที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก ออกแบบการก่อสร้างโดยสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ เจ้าฟ้ากรมพระยานริศ รานุวัตติวงศ์ ลักษณะ สถาปัตยกรรมขององค์พระที่นั่งเป็นสถาปัตยกรรม แบบวิคตอเรียตัวอาคารเป็นรูปตัวอักษรตัว L ในภาษาอังกฤษ ตั้งฉากกัน 2 ปีก แต่ละปีกยาว 60 เมตร บริเวณหน้าจั่ว เชิงชาย และระเบียง ประดับ ด้วยไม้แกะสลักลวดลายขนมปังขิง พระที่นั่งวิมาน เมฆนั้นสูงจากพื้นดินถึง หลังคายอดโดมแปดเหลี่ยม 25 เมตร มีห้องใหญ่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 31 ห้อง และปัจจุบันเปิดให้เข้า ชมทั้ง 31 ห้อง ห้องต่างๆ แบ่งออกเป็น 5 หมู่สี คือ สี ฟ้า เขียว ชมพู งาช้าง และสีลูกพีช แต่ละหมู่สีเจ้านายหรือพระบรม วงศานุ วงศ์ฝ่ายในประทับเป็นส่วนๆ ไป ส่วนบริเวณโดม 8 เหลี่ยม ทางทิศตะวันตกเป็นที่ประทับ ส่วนพระองค์ใน ล้นเกล้า รัชกาลที่ 5 พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ เปิดให้เข้าชมครั้งแรกในคราวพระ ราชพิธีฉลองกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครบ 200 ปี ในปี พ.ศ. 2525 โดยพระราชด�ำริ ในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้า พระบรมราชินีนาถ ซึ่งทรงส�ำรวจและพบว่า องค์

พระที่นั่งยังอยู่ในสภาพดีและมีศิลปะ วัตถุบางชิ้นเก็บอยู่ พระองค์ท่านจึงทรง ขอพระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เพื่อ ซ่อมแซม และเปิดเป็นครั้งแรกในวโรกาสดังกล่าว และมาเปิดเป็นการถาวร เพื่อให้นักท่องเที่ยวและประชาชนทั่วไปเข้าชม ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2528 ต�ำหนักพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าพวงสร้อยสอางค์ ต�ำหนักหลังนี้เดิมเป็นที่ประทับของพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าพวง สร้อยสอางค์ พระขนิษฐาในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ปัจจุบันจัดแสดงนาฬิกาโบราณ และของที่ระลึกจากต่างประเทศ ต�ำหนักพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าอรุณวดี ต�ำหนักนี้เดิมเป็นที่ประทับของพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์ เจ้าอรุณวดี ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 โปรด เกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระราชทาน พระขนิษฐา ปัจจุบันจัดแสดงภาพถ่ายฝีพระหัตถ์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลปัจจุบัน เก๋งมังกร 8 เหลี่ยม เก๋งมังกร ๘ เหลี่ยม ประดิษฐานพระพุทธเบญจพิทักษ์ไทย เฉลิมพระเกียรติ พระมหาโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม ๕ ปาง น้อมเกล้าฯ ถวายพระบาท สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องในโอกาสทรงครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ ๕๐ ปี พุทธศักราช ๒๕๓๙ โดยครอบครัว ชัยลือกิจ ต�ำหนักพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าบุษบันบัวผัน เป็นต�ำหนักที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 โปรด เกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระราชทานพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าบุษบันบัวผัน
พระขนิษฐา ปัจจุบันเป็นอีกต�ำหนักหนึ่งที่จัดแสดงภาพถ่ายฝีพระหัตถ์ ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลปัจจุบัน ต�ำหนักพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมหลวงวรเสรฐสุดา ต�ำหนักหลังนี้เป็นที่ประทับของกรมหลวงวรเสรฐสุดา พระราชธิดาใน รัชกาลที่ 3 ซึ่งเป็นพระผู้อภิบาลสมเด็จพระเทพศิรินทรามาตย์ สมเด็จ พระราชชนนีในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ปัจจุบัน สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ทรงพระกรุณาโปรด เกล้าฯ พระราชทานศิลปวัตถุวัฒนธรรมบ้านเชียง ซึ่งเป็นวัฒนธรรม ของคนสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ ทางภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของ ประเทศไทยมาจัดแสดง สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราช กุมารี เสด็จฯ เปิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม 2542 ต�ำหนักพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าอรไทยเทพกัญญา ต�ำหนักหลังนี้พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างพระราชทานพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์ปัจจุบันจัดแสดงพระภูษาและผ้า โบราณ และและผ้าไหมจากมูลนิธิส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพ ต�ำหนักหอ

แสดงนิทรรศการ เพราะการรวบรวมความรู้ โดยการน�ำเทคโนโลยีหรือเทคนิคทีท่ นั สมัยเข้ามาให้กบั เยาวชน ได้เรียนรูป้ ระวัตศิ าสตร์ ศิลปะ และวัฒนธรรม จะท�ำให้เยาวชนเกิดความสนใจ เข้าใจได้งา่ ยขึน้ เป็นการสร้าง ความภาคภูมิใจในความเป็นไทยให้กับเยาวชนรุ่นหลัง กลุม่ เป้าหมายคือ กลุม่ เยาวชน การรวบรวมความรูท้ มี่ กี ารน�ำเทคโนโลยี เทคนิคทีท่ นั สมัยเข้ามาให้กบั เยาวชน ได้เรียนรูป้ ระวัตศิ าสตร์ จะท�ำให้เยาวชนเกิดความสนใจ เข้าใจได้งา่ ยขึน้ เป็นการสร้างความภาคภูมใิ จในความ เป็นไทยให้กับเยาวชนรุ่นหลัง, ครอบครัว เยาวชนที่มากับพ่อแม่ ครอบครัวก็จะเกิดความอบอุ่น สร้างความ สัมพันธ์ทดี่ ขี องครอบครัว ชวนปูย่ า่ ตายายมาดูกเ็ ป็นการเพิม่ พืน้ ทีท่ ำ� กิจกรรมทีด่ กี บั ครอบครัว, ชาวต่างชาติ หรือนักท่องเที่ยว เพราะการที่มีศูนย์การเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศไทย เราจะได้รับความ นับถือจากชาวต่างชาติว่าเป็นชาติที่มีวัฒนธรรม มีประวัติศาสตร์ที่น่าเชิดชู, กลุ่มของชุมชนชาวราชด�ำเนิน ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นกลุ่มที่สำ� คัญที่สุด เพราะการสร้างอะไรที่ไม่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับชุมชนนั้นไม่ควร แต่จะต้องให้ ชุมชนมีสว่ นร่วมหรือได้รบั ประโยชน์ ซึง่ อาคารนิทรรศน์รตั นโกสินทร์ได้จดั ให้มบี ริการห้องสมุด ซึง่ เป็นแหล่ง สืบค้นข้อมูลความรู้ โดยเยาวชนในชุมชนน่าจะเป็นผู้ที่ได้ประโยชน์มากที่สุด อาคารนิทรรศน์รัตนโกสินทร์ได้เริ่มโครงการก่อสร้าง บูรณะอาคาร และตกแต่งนิทรรศการภายใน ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2551 และเปิดให้สาธารณชนได้เข้าชมเพื่อร่วมภาคภูมิใจไปกับศิลปะวิทยาการ มรดกของแผ่นดินที่ สืบทอดมายาวนาน และอารยธรรมของประเทศในยุคที่เรียกว่า รัตนโกสินทร์ อาคารนิทรรศน์รัตนโกสินทร์ เป็นอาคาร 3 ชั้น ไม่รวมชั้นลอยและที่ปลายของอาคารทั้งสองด้าน มีชั้น 4 ส�ำหรับเป็นจุดชมวิวในมุมสูง พื้นที่ใช้สอยภายในอาคาร รวมทั้งสิ้น 4,800 ตร.ม. ภายในอาคารจัดแสดง นิทรรศการเกี่ยวกับรัตนโกสินทร์ด้วยเทคโนโลยีอันทันสมัย ทั้งสื่อจัดแสดง หุ่นจ�ำลอง การน�ำสื่อผสม เสมือนจริง 4 มิติ สื่อมัลติทัช มัลติมีเดีย แอนิเมชันในลักษณะอินเตอร์เอคทีฟ เซล์ฟ เลิร์นนิ่ง (Interactive Self-learning) โดยแบ่งการจัดแสดงนิทรรศการออกเป็น ๙ ห้อง “นิทรรศน์รัตนโกสินทร์” ได้นาเสนอเรื่องราวด้านต่างๆ แห่งยุครัตนโกสินทร์ ผ่านห้องจัดแสดง ซึ่งตั้งชื่อไว้ อย่างคล้องจองกัน ดังนี้ รัตนโกสินทร์เรืองโรจน์ ร่วมย้อนกลับไปสู่เมื่อครั้งแรกเริ่มสถาปนากรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ด้วยภาพยนตร์สื่อ

Kanchanaburi • A province of ancient community, three pagodas pass, precious stones, River Kwae Bridge, Minerals and waterfall resources. • Because of its magnificent landscape and charming beauty, Kanchanaburi has become a major tourist destination, with attractions including several well-known waterfalls, caves that were once inhabited by Neolithic man, pristine national parks, tranquil rivers, virgin forests, and several large reservoirs. Together, these attractions offer an intriguing experience for both first-time and repeat visitors. Whether it’s fishing, rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, bird-watching, star-gazing, golfing, elephant and jungle trekking, or even living in a bamboo raft, Kanchanaburi takes pride in offering them all. In north and west Kanchanaburi, the terrain is comprised mainly of mountains and high plains, with the Thanon Thongchai Range acts as a natural border between Thailand and Myanmar. The range is the source of Kanchanaburi’s two most important rivers Maenam Khwae Noi (Little Kwai River) and Maenam Khwae Yai (Big Kwai River), which form the famous Maenam Mae Klong. As a result of these major rivers and three of Thailand’s largest reservoirs, Kanchanaburi features several of Thailand’s largest Namtok (waterfalls) as well as a number of wildlife sanctuaries.The most defining natural attractions in Kanchanaburi is arguably the Three Pagodas Pass, a break in the Thanon Thongchai Mountain Range that divides Thailand and Myanmar. Along an overland trade route from India, it is through this pass that Buddhism was thought to first to arrive in Thailand around the 3rd century. The province and its pass were later controlled by the Khmer of Angkor in the 13th century, who built a fort there (a Khmer temple from the time has been restored as a tourist attraction). The kingdom of Ayutthaya also built a military garrison in the area, though it was through the pass that the Burmese frequently swept into Siam and eventually razed the capital of Ayutthaya. In World War II, the Japanese built a railway through the pass using forced labor, including western POWs. Later known as the Death Railway, the line included an infamous bridge crossing the Kwai River that was the subject of a historically inaccurate academy award winning film. The Three Pagodas Pass area is also home to numerous hill tribes and other minority groups who reside in the area as nation-less refugees without citizenship in either land. For visitors, it is possible to get temporary one-day visas to cross the border for a sneak peak at Myanmar and do some shopping for exotic souvenirs. The city of Kanchanaburi is located at the point where the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai Rivers meet and form the Maenam Mae Klong. The notorious Death Railway passed through the town, near which stands the
site of the Bridge on the River Kwai. Nearby the reconstructed bridge are monuments including an Allied War Cemetery and a war museum. In economic terms, Kanchanaburi has been prospering for a number of years. Important industries include sugar, agricultural products, and jewelry. Tourism is also a main source of income for the locals, though most are engaged in agricultural activities. The province’s population is made up of Thai, Mon, and Karen peoples, most of whom are rural dwellers who enjoy living simply and respecting nature. Moreover, folk music and dances dating back at least 500 years are still performed to this day. Only two hours from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is accessible by road or rail, the latter of which includes sightseeing day trips that run on weekends and public holidays; these weekend special trains are reasonably priced and make hassle free and enjoyable adventures. Even the climate of Kanchanaburi, cooled by the altitude, forests, and rivers, is a welcome respite from the heat and congestion of the nearby capital city. Kanchanaburi city, the capital of Kanchanaburi Province, is a popular resort town; picturesque and worthy of a visit in its own right, it is frequently visited as base of operations for exploring the many cultural, natural, and historical attractions in the surrounding countryside. Located at the confluence of the Kwai Noi and Kwai Yai Rivers, Kanchanaburi lies at the source of the Mae Klong River, and these majestic bodies of water are defining characteristics of the town. The original town of Kanchanaburi was established by King Rama I as a first line of defense against the Burmese, whom he believed might use the old invasion route through the Three Pagodas Pass at the Siam-Myanmar border. According to most historians, the old town of Kanchanaburi was located near Ban Lat Ya, a small village situated approximately 16 kilometers north of the present town. The present provincial capital is a relatively newer town built by King Rama III in 1833. The town itself is a place to relax, watching the water from the banks of the river, inside a raft house, or from a riverside restaurant. Many visitors like to rest along the river with a cold drink and a good book. Many of them come here just for a couple days but stay for weeks in order to explore all of the attractions in the surrounding countryside. Along with visiting spectacular waterfalls, lush forests, and three of Thailand’s largest reservoirs, white water rafting, elephant trekking, and golfing are popular activities for visitors. Kanchanaburi is an excellent tourist destination for nature lovers.

the Death Railway ทางรถไฟสายมรณะ In 1943 thousands of Allied Prisoners of War (PoW) and Asian labourers worked on the Death Railway under the imperial Japanese army in order to construct part of the 415 km. long Burma-Thailand railway. Most of these men were Australians, Dutch and British and they had been working steadily southwards from Thanbyuzayat (Burma) to link with other PoW on the Thai side of the railway. This railway was intended to move men and supplies to the Burmese front where the Japanese were fighting the British. Japanese army engineers selected the route which traversed deep valleys and hills. All the heavy work was done manually either by hand or by elephant as earth moving equipment was not available. The railway line originally ran within 50 meters of the Three Pagodas Pass which marks nowadays the border to Burma. However after the war the entire railway was removed and sold as it was deemed unsafe and politically undesirable. The prisoners lived in squalor with a near starvation diet. They were subjected to captor brutality and thus thousands perished. The men worked from dawn until after dark and often had to trudge many kilometres through the jungle to return to base camp where Allied doctors tended the injured and diseased by many died.
After the war the dead were collectively reburied in the War Cemeteries and will remain forever witness to a brutal and tragic ordeal. ทางรถไฟสายมรณะ หรือ ทางรถไฟสายพม่า หรือ ทาง รถไฟสายกาญจนบุรี ทางรถไฟสายนี้เริ่มต้นจากสถานีชุมทางหนองปลา ดุก อ�ำเภอบ้านโป่ง จังหวัดราชบุรี ผ่านจังหวัดกาญจนบุรีข้ามแม่น�้ำแคว ใหญ่ โดยสะพานข้ามแม่น�้ำแคว ไปทางทิศตะวันตกจนถึงด่านเจดีย์สาม องค์ เพื่อให้ถึงปลายทางที่เมืองทันบูซายัด ประเทศพม่าทางรถไฟสาย มรณะมีความยาวจากหนองปลาดุกถึงสถานีทนั บูซายัดรวม 415 กิโลเมตร เป็นทางรถไฟอยู่ในเขตประเทศไทยประมาณ 303.95 กิโลเมตร และ อยู่ในเขตพม่า 111.05 กิโลเมตร มีสถานีจ�ำนวน 37 สถานี ทางรถไฟ สายนี้สร้างขึ้นในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 โดยใช้แรงงานเชลยศึกฝ่าย สัมพันธมิตรและกรรมกรชาวเอเชียที่กองทัพญี่ปุ่นเกณฑ์มาสร้าง เพื่อ ใช้เป็นเส้นทางยุทธศาสตร์ผ่านประเทศพม่า ปัจจุบันเส้นทางนี้ไปสุด ปลายทางที่บ้านท่าเสาหรือสถานีน�้ำตก ระยะทางจากสถานีกาญจนบุรี ถึงสถานีน�้ำตกเป็นระยะทางประมาณ 77 กิโลเมตร การรถไฟแห่ง ประเทศไทยเปิดเดินรถบนเส้นทางนี้ทุกวันและจัดรถไฟขบวนพิเศษสาย กรุงเทพฯ - น�้ำตก ทุกวันเสาร์ อาทิตย์ และวันหยุดราชการ จุดที่นักท่อง เที่ยวให้ความสนใจมากคือช่วงสะพานข้ามแม่น�้ำแคว และช่วงโค้งมรณะ หรือถ�้ำกระแซ ซึ่งเป็นสะพานโค้งเลียบแม่น�้ำแควน้อยยาวประมาณ 400 เมตร ISSUE 8 2013

The Bridge of the River Kwai
สะพานข้ามแม่น�้ำแคว Thanks to several films and books, the Bridge on the River Khwae has become notoriously famous and attracted both Thais and foreigners to the site. If an ordinary black iron bridge can tell a story, you can be sure it’s a dramatic one.The bridge spans across Maenam Khwae Yai which is a branch of Maenam Mae Klong. During the Japanese occupation of Thailand in World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army brought the iron bridge from Java. It was then resembled by Allied Prisoners of War (POW) under Japanese supervision. The bridge was part of a strategic railway route to Myanmar in which the Japanese aimed to secure supplies with which to conquer other western Asian countries. It was 415 kilometers long (about 303 kilometers in Thailand and about 112 kilometers in Burma) and passed through the Three Pagoda Pass in Sangkhlaburi District, the northern most part of Kanchanaburi province. Construction started on September 16, 1942 at Nong Pladuk, and was completed on 25 December 1943. It is estimated that over 16,000 POWs from England, Australia, Holland and America died while building the bridge which was a target of bombing raids in 1945. In addition to this, approximate 90,000 laborers from Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia died during its construction. Rebuilt after WWII, the bridge is still in use today with the curved portions of the bridge being that of the original. An attraction of note is the annual light and sound event at the bridge to commemorate the Allied attack in 1945.The railway currently ends at Ban Tha Sao or Namtok Station, a distance of some 77 km. from Kanchanaburi Station. Mon wooden bridge สะพานมอญ
Stroll along the country’s longest Mon wooden bridge in Sangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi province. To come and witness this with your very eyes is worth more than a thousand words. It is the longest wooden bridge built at Sangkhlaburi district for the purpose of public use as a route to come into contact between the two communities of Thais and Mons. The dazzling Sangkhlaburi wooden bridge, also known as Uttamanusorn Bridge, is a symbol of the district. Everyday there are a massive crowd of tourists come here to walk across the river Songaria and overlooks a scenic landscape of Sangkhlaburi. Sangkhlaburi wooden bridge can be considered as the route of an international friendship between Thais and Mons because it links together Sangkhlaburi district to the Mon community on the other side of the bank. Therefore, it was given the name Saphan Mon. In the past, this bridge was built under the commission of highly sacred Luang Phor Uttama of Wang Wiwekaram temple, whom Thai, Mon and Karen people share a great respect in. It is said that some of huge logs used in the construction of the bridge were actually withered trees under the Khao Laem reservoir. Nowadays, the 900-meter long bridge is for public transportation to make merit at Wang Wiwekaram temple where Luang Phor Uttama had resided when he was still alive. In addition, a considerable number of tourists can cross over to the other side to visit the Mon community as well.

Mueang Singh historical park Muang Singh town was built between 857 and 1157 when the Khmer Kingdom was still prosperous. It was later abandoned until the reign of King Rama I when Muang Singh was rebuilt as a Kanchanaburi border town.The only archeological site with a religious structure built in the middle of the city is the Khmer Prasat Mueang Sing (Tower of the City of Lions) where the heavy influence of the late Lop Buri arts is clearly visible. The ancient site is located on a steep bank of Khwae Noi River where the waterway narrows and becomes fast flowing. The city walls, which were made of rectangular laterite, are approximately 800 meters in width, 1,500 meters in length and 5 meters in height. The compound is believed to have been the westernmost outpost of the Angkor-centered Khmer empire. Remains dating back some 2,000 years have been discovered, and artifacts, including temple carvings, religious statuary and pottery shards indicate that the city must have been inhabited from approximately the 12th to 14th centuries. อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์เมืองสิงห์ หรือที่นิยมเรียกว่า “ปราสาท เมืองสิงห์” มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 641 ไร่ เป็นโบราณสถานแบบขอม มีการสร้าง ขึ้นในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 ในสมัยพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7 เพื่อเป็นพุทธสถาน นิกายมหายาน ผังเมืองยังเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส ก�ำแพงเมืองก่อด้วยศิลา แลงขนาดกว้าง 880 เมตรโดยได้รับอิทธิพลทางศาสนาและวัฒนธรรมจาก ขอม ตัวปราสาทล้อมรอบด้วยก�ำแพงศิลาแลงคูน�้ำ และแนวคันดิน รูปแบบ
สถาปัตยกรรมและประติมากรรมสร้างตามลักษณะขอมแบบบายนตรงกับ สมัยพระเจ้าชัยวรมันที่ 7 และมีลักษณะช่างท้องถิ่นผสมอยู่ บริเวณปราสาท ได้ขุดค้นพบโครงกระดูกของมนุษย์สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ที่รู้จักใช้โลหะ มาท�ำเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้และเครื่องประดับแล้ว และได้พบฐานโบราณสถาน อิฐในสมัยทวารวดี จนกระทั่งมีการก่อสร้างปราสาทด้วยศิลาแลงต่อมา หลักฐานเก่าแก่ที่สุดที่พบที่ในบริเวณเมืองสิงห์นั้น ได้จากการขุดค้นบริเวณริม แม่น�้ำแควน้อยนอกก�ำแพงเมืองด้านทิศใต้ หลักฐานดังกล่าวเป็นหลุมฝังศพ มนุษย์และเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ที่ฝังร่วมกับศพ อาทิเช่นภาชนะดินเผา แวดินเผา ภาชนะส�ำริด ขวานส�ำริด ทัพพีส�ำริด ก�ำไลส�ำริด ลูกปัดหินอะเกตและคาร์นี เลียน ก�ำไลหิน ลูกปัดแก้ว ก�ำไลเปลือกหอย ฯลฯ หลักฐานเหล่านี้คล้ายคลึง กับที่พบที่บ้านดอนตราเพชร อ�ำเภอพนมทวน จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ซึ่งก�ำหนด อายุอยู่ในราวปลายยุคโลหะสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ มีอายุประมาณ ๒,๐๐๐ ปี มาแล้ว แสดงให้เห็นว่าบริเวณนี้มีคนเข้ามาท�ำกิจกรรมก่อนหน้าที่จะสร้างเมือง เป็นเวลานานนับพันปี แต่น่าเสียดาย ที่ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานแสดงความต่อเนื่อง ทางวัฒนธรรมของบริเวณนี้จากสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์มาสู่ยุคที่มีการสร้าง เมือง จากการขุดแต่งของกรมศิลปากร พบศิลปกรรมที่ส�ำคัญยิ่งคือพระพุทธ รูปนาคปรก พระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวร และ นางปรัชญาปารมิตา และยังพบ รูปพระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวรเปล่งรัศมีอีกองค์หนึ่ง รูปลักษณ์คล้ายกับที่พบใน ประเทศกัมพูชา ปัจจุบันกรมศิลปากรได้น�ำไปเก็บรักษาอยู่ที่พิพิธภัณฑสถาน แห่งชาติ พระนคร แล้ว คงเหลือแต่องค์จ�ำลองไว้ นอกเหนือจากโบราณสถานที่ ได้รับการปรับปรุงเป็นอย่างดี ยังมีพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่จัดแสดงโบราณศิลปวัตถุที่พบใน เมืองสิงห์ ที่ให้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาอีกด้วย

hellfire Pass
Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum Hellfire Pass is a section of rock that was dug out by Prisoners of War intended to allow the ‘Death Railway’ to continue its route from Bangkok to Rangoon. Soldiers were forced to remove the rock using no more than picks, hammers and their bare hands. The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum is dedicated to those Australians and other Allied Prisoners of War and Asian laborers who suffered and died at Hellfire Pass and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region during World War II. The Australian Government constructed the interpretative memorial in cooperation with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand. The railway was never built to a level of lasting permanence and was frequently bombed by the Royal Air Force during the Burma Campaign. After the war, all but the present section was closed and the line is now only in service between Bangkok and Nam Tok Sai Yok Noi. The museum explains to visitors the story of why and how the railway was built and attempts to convey the hardships and suffering endured by so many who were forced to work in extremely harsh conditions. The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum symbolizes the importance of this site to the Australian people. The museum is open daily from 9:00 – 16:00

Hellfire Pass in the Tenasserim Hills was a particularly difficult section of the line to build. It was the largest rock cutting on the railway, coupled with its general remoteness and the lack of proper construction tools during building. A tunnel would have been possible to build instead of a cutting, but this could only be constructed at the two ends at any one time, whereas the cutting could be constructed at all points simultaneously despite the excess effort required by the POWs. The Australian, British, Dutch and other allied Prisoners of War were required by the Japanese to work 18 hours a day to complete the cutting. Sixty nine men were beaten to death by Japanese guards in the
six weeks it took to build the cutting, and many more died from cholera, dysentery, starvation, and exhaustion (Wigmore 568). However, the majority of deaths occurred amongst labourers whom the Japanese enticed to come to help build the line with promises of good jobs. These labourers, mostly Malayans (Chinese, Malays and Tamils from Malaya), suffered mostly the same as the POWs at the hands of the Japanese. The Japanese kept no records of these deaths. Though the bridges no longer survive, the landscape reveals the profound difficulties of constructing the railway in this steep and rugged terrain. As much as the memorial museum it testifies to the terrible hardships of the prisoners and romusha.

Mahathera Kanchong’s Room the resting quarter of the great monk, Mahathera Kanchong, was built with Burmese architectural influence. It’s the place where young Prince Naresuan honed both his martial art and knowledge. The Weapon room the great monk, Mahathera Kanchong, also stored 8 special weapons including Phrasangdab Viet (Sword), Phrasangdap kab kai (Sword), Phrakanchaisri (Knife), Kree, Jakra, Phrasang Puen Ton (Long Range Musket), Prasang Puen (Gun), and Phrasang Kor Ngao. These weapons were later given to King Naresuan. Temple of Mahathera Kanchong the temple and the temple Bodi were designed based on Mon architecture which consists of The Swan Pole, Large Bell, and Knowledge Stone Wall of Hongsa replicated to be as realistic as once a strong wall of the city of Hongsa Burma. The details of the wall were carefully crafted with Burmese art. Srihasasanabunlung (The Lion Throne Palace) establishments
locate right before the great Lion Throne Palace. In ancient time, these would be the barracks and training area. However, the 4 buildings are now being used to house beautiful King Naresuan art prints. The Wall of Ayodhya the huge wall of Ayodhya was built to be as realistic as possible with the working mechanical gate. Ayodhya Village complete with various Ayodhya housing style and town market, the village is used in film to show the lifestyle Ayodhya people. King Bayinongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Throne Room much research went into studying Burmese historical record on this throne room. The room is fully decorated even the pillars are covered in gold showing the wealth of King Bayinong, the king of Burma. Visitors tired out by a long day of sightseeing may want to
relax with a traditional Thai massage, which is available on-site. Furthermore, visitors can also enjoy various activities such as dressing in traditional historic costumes (a unique souvenir photo opportunity!), as well as horse, elephant and cart riding. The studio compound also includes souvenir shops. A pair of huge Singha statues (mythical lions mixed with other creatures) welcomes visitors at the entrance to the compound. A brochure and map, as well as a brief introductory lecture about the Studio are provided at the Information Centre where visitors pay the entrance fee. There are also guide lecturers stationed at various spots, and plasma screens giving historical background and describing scenes from the Naresuan films. มอญ ซึ่งจะมีจุดเด่นคือ เสาหงษ์, ระฆังใหญ่, และหลักศิลา จารึกสถานที่แห่งนี้เป็นสถานที่ที่ใช้ถ่ายท�ำฉากการประลอง ของพระนเรศวรและบุญทิ้งในวัยเยาว์ต่อหน้า พระมหาเถร คันฉ่อง และฉากที่ท้าววรจันทร์พระพี่เลี้ยงของสมเด็จพระ สุพรรณกัลยาน�ำข่าวมาแจ้งให้กับพระมหาเถรคันฉ่องถึง การวางแผนหลบหนีของพระนเรศวรเพือ่ กลับสยามประเทศ ฉากก�ำแพงเมืองหงสาวดีนั้นถูกสร้างจ�ำลองขึ้นมาอย่าง สมจริง ทั้งลายละเอียดของตัวก�ำแพงและลวดลายต่างๆ ซึง่ แตกต่างไปจากก�ำแพงเมืองต่างๆของไทยอย่างเห็นได้ชดั ฉากสีหสาสนบัลลังก์ ตั้งอยู่ถัดมาทางด้านหลังของอาคาร แสดงนิทรรศการ มีสิงห์สองตัวตั้งอยู่ด้านหน้าซึ่งสิงห์ดัง กล่าวตามต�ำนานจริงๆแล้วนั้นไม่มีแต่ทางพร้อมมิตรฯ ได้ สร้างขึ้นมาเพิ่มเติมเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความยิ่งใหญ่และสื่อ ความหมายในทางที่ว่า แม้แต่สิงห์ก็ยังมาถวายความเคารพ สถานที่แห่งนี้ใช้ถ่ายท�ำฉากส�ำคัญหลายๆฉาก เช่น ฉากชน ไก่หรือที่เรียกว่า “ฉากไก่เชลย” และฉากการถูกพิพากษา เผาทั้งเป็นของเจ้าฟ้าเมืองคลัง เลอขิ่น และหมอกมู สถาน ทีแ่ ห่งนีถ้ กู สร้างขึน้ อย่างถูกต้องตามแบบทีไ่ ด้จำ� ลองมาจาก พระราชวังมัณฑะเลย์รวมไปถึงบัลลังก์สงิ ห์ กรอบประตู พระ วิสูตรและการตกแต่งด้วยไม้แกะสลัก ก็เป็นไปตามแบบ ศิลปกรรมของพม่า ฉากก�ำแพงเมืองอโยธยานีถ้ กู สร้างขึน้ อย่างสวยงาม ยิง่ ใหญ่ และสมจริง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นรายละเอียดในส่วนของ “กว้าน” ที่เอาไว้ใช้ส�ำหรับเปิดประตูเมือง ก็ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาตามแบบ ของจริง และจุดนี้นักท่องเที่ยวยังสามารถขึ้นไปชมทิวทัศน์ อันสวยงามของสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวแห่งนี้จากบนก�ำแพงเมือง ได้อีกด้วย ฉากหมู่บ้านอโยธยา หมู่บ้านแห่งนี้ใช้ถ่ายท�ำฉากที่เกี่ยว กับวิถีชีวิตของชาวบ้านในกรุงศรีอยุธยา จะมีทั้งส่วนที่เป็น ตลาด บ้านเรือนหลากหลายขนาดตามแต่ฐานะของชาวบ้าน ภายในหมู่บ้านนี้จะมีบางส่วนที่อยู่ในระหว่างด�ำเนินการ ก่อสร้าง เพื่อที่จะใช้เป็นฉากในการถ่ายท�ำภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ต�ำนานสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ในภาคที่3 ฉากต�ำหนักบุเรงนอง การก่อสร้างท้องพระโรงนีท้ างทีมงาน ได้จัดสร้างเฉพาะส่วนที่เป็นภายในของท้องพระโรง โดย ออกแบบให้ผนังและเสาต่างๆตกแต่งด้วยทองค�ำ ตามข้อมูล

หอศิลป์และพิพิธภัณฑ์สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2
The World War 2 Museum or the “Art Gallery & World War 2 Museum” of Karnchanaburi is a private museum founded by Khun Aranrat Chansiri whose main trade lies within Karnchanaburi’s precious stones market. This museum, situating right on the banks of River Kwai near the Bridge of River Kwai, was founded in 1995. Walking into its domain, the museum itself is a group of buildings furnished to store both art and artifacts relating to World War 2, the construction of the Bridge on River Kwai as well as the founder’s personal interests and precious stone trading business. On the overall, the museum can be divided into seven segments with seven major stories to be told. The first of the seven describes the Thai-Burmese wars fought over the years being displayed on canvas as well as artifacts, such as, pottery, medicine mortar and the armaments used during those wars. The second is the story of the construction of the Bridge on River Kwai and the Thai-Burmese railway. This is depicted through a reproduction of the World War 2 Prisoner of War encampment building, mannequins, paintings and photographs displaying the living conditions of World War 2 POW’s at the time. Also being displayed is the reproduction of the bombings of this infamous bridge. The third is the founder’s personal collection of stamps, watches, coins and bills, stuffed

animals, musical instruments and others as such. The fourth is a display of minerals and jewelries. You will find all sorts of stones and minerals including amethysts, white jade, rutile, and other gems. The fifth collection is of the traditional Thai attire as well as paintings of Miss Thailand Universe from the past up to the present. The sixth collection is of the Japanese Army vehicles, such as, Jeeps, motorcycles, horse-drawn carriages, etc. The seventh and final collection displays the prehistoric cave man in paintings as well as a displaying each stage of the human evolution. Wat Wang Wiwekaram Originally known as Wat Wang Wiwekaram, the Sunken Temple is an ancient temple, in which the monk Uttama (Luang Phor Uttama) resided was established by the combined efforts and contributions of the Mon people living in the area. The temple was later relocated, due to the nearby Wicharalongkorn Dam Project, to a location called “Sam Pra Sob”, which translate to “the point where three meets”, for it was the location where the three rivers of Rantee (from Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Reserve), Beekly (from numerous brooks east of Sangkla) and Songalia (from Myanmar) all meet. About 6 km. from Amphoe Sangkhla Buri, this temple is the residence of Luangpho Uttama, a respected monk of Thais and Mons including Karens and Burmese living in the area. On the riverside, an elegant marble Buddha image named “Luangpho Khao” is situated in the Wihan (Buddhist assembly hall). Besides, 1 km. from the temple, the Buddha Gaya Chedi with a square-formed base is situated containing relics of Lord Buddha’s right thumb. Near the pagoda, there are lots of shops selling products from Myanmar such as clothing, cosmetics, Burmese talcum powder and wooden furniture at low prices. By visiting this grand attraction, one would be able to see and experience the atmosphere of both sides of the river which is a subtle understanding of the livelihood of the Mon people. If one should visit during March-April, the water level would drop low enough for a visit to the temple’s main chapel. We got to see the underwater Buddhist church. It was originall the location of Wang Wiwakarama. When there was a construction of Khao Lam dam in 1984, the villagers constructed the temple and their neighborhood above the dam. Due to the drought, we has a chance to see the whole body of the temple.

วัดใต ้น�้ ำ วัดวังก์วิเวการามเก่า วัดวังก์วิเวการาม (เดิม) หรือ วัดใต้น�้ำคือวัดเก่าของ หลวงพ่อ อุตมะ เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยว Unseen Thailand ที่ชาว มอญ ร่วมใจกันสร้างขึ้น แต่เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2527 การไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิต แห่งประเทศไทยได้ก่อสร้างเขื่อนเขาแหลม หรือ เขื่อนวชิราลง กรณ์ ซึ่งเมื่อกักเก็บน�้ำแล้ว น�้ำในเขื่อนเขาแหลมจะท่วมตัวอ�ำเภอ เก่ารวมทัง้ บริเวณหมูบ่ า้ นชาวมอญทัง้ หมด ทางวัดจึงได้ยา้ ยมาอยู่ บนเนินเขาในทีป่ จั จุบนั หลวงพ่ออุตตมะได้จดั สรรทีด่ นิ ของวัดวังก์ วิเวการามให้ชาวบ้านครอบครัวละ 30 ตารางวา ปัจจุบันหมู่บ้าน ชาวมอญมีพื้นที่ราว 1,000 ไร่เศษ มีผู้อาศัยราว 1,000 หลังคา เรือน ชาวบ้านเกือบทั้งหมดจัดเป็นผู้พลัดถิ่นสัญชาติพม่าซึ่งไม่มี บัตรประชาชน หาเลีย้ งชีพโดยการปลูกพืชผักสวนครัวตามชายน�ำ้ ท�ำประมงชายฝัง่ บริเวณวัดเดิมอดีตเป็นชุมชนของชาวมอญ ตัง้ อยู่ บริเวณจุดที่เรียกว่า “สามประสบ” คือเป็นที่บรรจบของแม่นํ้า 3 คือ แม่น�้ำรันตี มาจาก ทุ่งใหญ่นเรศวร แม่น�้ำบีคลี่ มาจาก ล�ำห้วย หลายสายทางตะวันออก ของสังขละ แม่น�้ำซองกาเลีย มาจาก ประเทศพม่า ท่านสามารถล่องเรือชมบรรยากาศสองริมฝั่งแม่น�้ำ ซึ่งจะพบวิถีการด�ำเนินชีวิตของชาวมอญ และสามารถเห็นยอด เจดี ย ์ พุ ท ธ คยา ร ะหว ่ า งกา ร ล่ อ งเรื อ หา กมา ในช ่ ว ง มีนาคม - เมษายน ระดับน�ำ้ จะลดลงและสามารถเข้าไปชมบริเวณ วัดหลวงพ่ออุตตมะเดิม และชมอุโบสถหลังเก่าทีจ่ มอยูใ่ ต้นำ�้ ได้ เป็น อีกหนึง่ สถานทีท่ ไี่ ด้ถอื ว่าเป็นไฮไลน์สำ� คัญของการมาเทีย่ วอ�ำเภอ สังขละบุรี ประมาณว่า หากใครไม่ได้นั่งเรือชมวัดใต้น�้ำ ถือว่ามา ไม่ถึงสังขละกันเลย แต่จะให้ดีต้องมาสองช่วง นั้นคือช่วงที่น�้ำลด และช่วงที่น�้ำขึ้น จะได้สัมผัสทั้ง 2 อารมณ์ของเมืองบาดาลแห่งนี้

ร้านอาหารธาราบุรี Tara Buree is no conventional restaurant. Over 20 years of services provided, this raft restaurant has been trusted by the locals of Karcnchanaburi for both its ambiance as well as its delicious cuisine. Tara Buree Restaurant is situated near the fork where the River Kwai and Kwai-noi River converges allowing a scenic view of a large, open bode of water with a raft village in the distance and the Tenasserim Mountain Ranges in the background; a nature scene which is spectacularly tranquil for both the eyes and the soul.
