GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

From the hot topics to the hot messes, here is what you may have missed last week. GOTTA FUCK 'EM ALL There’s now a Pokémon Go gay porn parody, because it’s 2016 and this is just the sort of thing we have to deal with now. Fuckémon Go: A Gay Porn Parody comes from the deranged minds at Men.com. This time around it’s last month’s smartphone obsession (what took you so long, guys?) that’s got their attention. “After a long day of mastering their ball-handling technique catching Fuckémon, Ash and his buddy, Brock, are in for a surprise. When the boys hunt down and catch a rare Peek-a-Choo, he evolves into a muscular sex god. What are these boys to do when faced with a hunky, real-life Peek-a-Choo?” REALLY, HOLLYWOOD? Matt Bomer is set to play a transgender sex worker in upcoming film Anything, which has provoked a predictably angry response from people frustrated to see yet another cis actor take on a prominent trans role. Anything is based on a play of the same name by Timothy 12 SEPTEMBER 7, 2016

McNeil. There’s been a predictable and immediate backlash over the casting of another cis actor in a trans role, echoing the response to both Jared Leto and Eddie Redmayne playing trans women in Dallas Buyers Club and The Danish Girl. GONE TOO SOON During last week's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, there was a first. Adore Delano packed up her bags and went home, making her the first queen to ever quit the franchise. "I'm thinking of going home," she tells Ru. "The critiques last night, and the vibes... It means a lot to me to just stick to my guns. I know how hard it took for me to gain that confidence and own my stardom like you taught me to." Mic. com wrote, "After a heart-to-heart with Michelle, and much pleading from the other queens to stay, Adore chooses to leave — making her the first queen in Drag Race herstory to do so — bringing the number of remaining queens to eight."

FAMILY STONE Gus Kenworthy and his family competed on a special celebrity edition of Family Feud to raise funds for Happy Hippie Foundation, Miley Cyrus's non-profit that provides assistance to LGBTQ homeless youth. When asked about what firemen do that is sexy, Kenworthy responded, "There's a lot that firemen do that I find sexy. But I am going to go with sliding down a pole." Needless to say, mom blushed. DIVA BOY Turns out you won’t have to wait until Sam Smith finishes recording his next album to hear more music from him — though he might not actually have much to do with his latest release. Independent label Flipbook Music has announced it will release Diva Boy, which it claims is Smith’s first album, recorded in 2008 — when he would have been just 16. COMMENTARY A response to Robert Sepulveda Jr’s outing as an ex-Rentboy Last week, we published an article online that shared information regarding Robert Sepulveda Jr.’s past. After we shared the article, a barrage of comments berated us for sharing this news, as many people saw our post as shady journalism. To clarify, we are extremely sex positive and do not believe in shaming anyone who has previously or currently works in this industry. Our post was intended to create dialogue about this topic and to question how it will be dealt with during the narrative of the show - if at all. We do hope to give Sepulveda a platform to share his story, as it is not our story to tell. Because Next is a forum for many voices and opinions regarding our community, we reached out to one commenter who voiced criticism for our coverage. We asked them to respond to our piece to keep the conversation going. Here is what they had to say. – Alexander Kacala, Editor-in-Chief, Next Magazine

skeleton in the closet, the topic of a scandalous gossip report, we’re contributing to the idea that sex work is something of which to be ashamed. In the same way that Hollywood frantically buzzes when a starlet’s nudes leak, it enforces the shame of sexuality and using our bodies for pleasure. Sex workers are drawn to the field for many different reasons, but for those who use their bodies as a means of survival, shouldn’t we be fighting for their dignity to live and survive? The community that Rentboy created was invaluable for queer sex workers by allowing them to make their own choices and to take charge of their own bodies. In RentBoy’s absence, the only clear solution to keep sex workers safe is legalization: Work force regulations are put in place to protect workers from abuse, from poor treatment and without any of these safeguards, sex workers are more vulnerable than any of us. Now, more than ever, we need to join forces and fight to legitimize humanity’s oldest profession.

It’s never surprising when the world of heteronormativity show signs of distaste towards homosexuality, but a surprising new trend has us cannibalizing ourselves more and more. Some websites recently revealed that Logo’s “Prince Charming” bachelor, Robert Sepulveda Jr., has a past in sex work. In classic TMZ-esq form, the original source continues to reveal his stats and other “juicy” details that gossip readers will surely eat up. A knee-jerk response from anyone might expect this kind of exposure when placed in the limelight, but is sex work something that should come back to haunt us? After Rentboy was raided by Homeland Security last year, male sex workers that used the site were left feeling uncertain and afraid of what might happen next. If they had jobs outside of sex work, they feared outage. If sex work was their primary means of income, they feared homelessness and a basket of other struggles that come hand in hand with the life of a full time sex worker. Among the voices of support that chimed in, were smatterings of discord that blamed those involved for being sex workers in the first place. As gay cis/transmen, our sexualities have been a major focus of disgust from heterosexuals, so why join that chorus and shame those among us who use their bodies and sexuality to pay the bills? When we sensationalize sex work, make it the proverbial

How, then, should we respond to this scandal? In a perfect world, we wouldn’t out sex workers in the first place, but the world is far from perfect, isn’t it? I believe, the most important thing is to allow someone, and in this case, Robert Sepulveda Jr, to reveal this information on their own terms. Perhaps, Mr. Sepulveda Jr. could make light of this incident and use it as a platform to showcase that sex work doesn’t ruin your life, that it doesn’t stop you from succeeding; his past as a Rentboy didn’t condemn his future. If we applaud people who worked three jobs and, “busted their ass,” to sustain themselves, why should sex workers be viewed differently? Everyone is trying to survive. Whether Sepulveda Jr. chooses to acknowledge this or not is entirely up to him; he doesn’t owe an explanation to any of us, and quite frankly, neither does Logo. The very notion that Prince Charming can’t be a Rentboy is absurd, after all, isn’t that what you hired him to be in the first place? N SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 17

Like the man he is currently playing on stage, Ryan Raftery is a hustler. The comedian is currently in the middle of a successful run bringing Bravo boy Andy Cohen to the stage at Joe’s Pub. The show, “Ryan Raftery’s Watch What Happens - Live On Stage!” has had a few sold out performances already this summer. It’s about to return to the New York stage three more times (September 12 is already sold out) before heading to the West Coast for a limited engagement as well.

Working at Coach at that time, a friend of Raftery mentioned the idea for him to write a show about Anna Wintour. The timing was perfect – as Coach was preparing to show Wintour a collection. Her energy was in the air and her name was constantly being brought up at work, the perfect inspiration for him to start writing. So now, why Cohen?

“Watch What Happens – Live On Stage!” is actually the middle installment of a series of shows that profile the Titans of Media. His first show based on the life and times of Anna Wintour, made waves, actually landing him as the guest bartender on Watch What Happens, Live one night. “I had just finished my fifth show,” he told us over salads at Elmo in Chelsea. “I had written all these shows about myself. They were total cabaret shows. People may still call what I do now cabaret but it really isn’t it. It’s maybe 25% cabaret but it’s mostly a play.” “Most cabaret shows you have someone who really considers themselves a singer first and foremost. I consider myself a comedian first and foremost. And my shows were always scripted. There would be a lot of stuff that happened off the cuff and ad-libed but they were always monologues that would lead into songs and I would change the lyrics to continue my story.” “So I had written five of those and had nothing else to say. I didn’t have anything pressing in my life to write about.” 18 SEPTEMBER 7, 2016

“I was dealing a lot with Kim and Kanye during my Anna show. When you talk about reality TV, it takes you less than 30 seconds to come to two names – Ryan Seacrest or Andy Cohen. The thing that is fascinating about Andy Cohen much more than Ryan Seacrest he has created a universe – a Bravo universe that has this home base - his talk show. These women are not getting booked on other talk shows. Nene maybe. Bethanny maybe. But the people on Vanderpump Rules? It’s great they have a place to get booked on.” “And Andy is far more extroverted than Ryan. He offers up a lot more of his life. Seacrest doesn’t seem that interesting whereas Andy will go on Facebook Live when he orders food and is waiting for his food. The audacity to think that someone is interested in that is very telling into his personality. And people are.” We had the opportunity to attend Raftery’s show that follows Cohen’s quest to claim the heart of another gay media juggernaut - Anderson Cooper. Raftery’s liveliness is ecstatic as Cohen. Where his voice lacks true musical polish, he makes

DOTHIS up for it with great energy. He has also some funny one line especially when he interacts with the audience. Raferty cast a lot of talent around him, as the Housewives are tour de forces who tear through their assigned songs and funny moments. Fruit fly Emily McNamara plays Teresa Giudice, whose stirring rendition of “Beauty and the Beast” while holding a baby Milania is touchingly hilarious. Miranda Noelle Wilson has double duty, playing both Kim Richards and Anderson Cooper. Romelda Teron Benjamin as Nene Leakes brings down the house when she seamlessly belts the song “Fame Me!” – a parody of Little Shop of Horrors’ “Feed Me!” But don’t just take our word for it. For Out.com, Michael Musto wrote, "Raftery is terrific, ripping into rewritten versions of pop and Broadway standards in between capturing Andy’s voice modulations and arm gestures." Has Andy seen it? No, not yet. But Raftery did bump into him backstage at the Barbra Streisand concert in Brooklyn (dreams) and he said he was hoping to get there in September. “He saw me and we hugged and he said he was so happy the show was a hit and that he wanted to come see it in September. I asked him if it was weird and he said, ‘Yeah, it’s a little weird.” But he was very nice about it all.” Cohen also sent Raftery flowers to his dressing room one night before a show. The card read, “It’s a hit! I’m incredibly flattered (and a little scared) and I finally have something in common with Anna Wintour! Love, Andy.”

So what’s next? Martha Stewart. Marth Stewart will be third and final installment in Raftery’s Titans of Media trilogy. Raftery already has the name, “Ryan Raftery's Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Martha Stewart.” He envisions the poster as him dressed as Stewart peering at the onlooker through a crack in the kitchen door with the tagline “Everything you're doing is wrong." What drew him to Stewart? “I wanted to do my next show on Martha Stewart after reading an article about her where it was reported that after she was convicted of insider trading her attorney told her they'd appeal. She said, ‘No. I want to go to prison now so that I'll be out in time to plant my garden in the spring.’ That kind of passion makes her story very appealing to me as a writer and performer.” Count us in. For tickets to “Ryan Raftery’s Watch What Happens - Live On Stage!” on September 14 and October 7, visit joespub. publictheater.org. SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 19

You mention the Middle East, being from Egypt, have you seen any progress at all there in the past 4 years? Definitely not legally and legislatively. The issue is still taboo. In places it is still criminalized. But in terms of acceptance, which is another side of the story, there has been progress. Every year they do polling and the levels of acceptance are growing… far too slowly and there’s still negativity but the trend is toward increased acceptance.

BY RENALDO SMITH

O

mar Sharif Jr. has been visible. As the grandson and namesake of a renowned actor and a major voice for LGBTQ rights in the Middle East and around the world, you may have seen him somewhere at some point. He took some time out of his busy schedule to have a chat with us. We are happy he did. When you came out in 2012, you wrote in an article, “I write this article in fear”. What are you still afraid of? That’s a really good question. I was scared. I think coming out is a very scary process no matter your background, no matter what level of support you think you’re going to have. Because it’s always a guessing game you know? It’s moving from the known to the unknown and that process isn’t easy for anyone. A lot has changed. I can tell you I am no longer afraid, now I am just proud. In the Middle East you know coming out is not an easy thing and no public figure had come out openly before I did and so no one really had an example to look to. If my story can pave the way and make things easier for one other person, then I am ah glad I did it. 20 SEPTEMBER 7, 2016

I read that you had suicidal thoughts? How did you make it through that dark period? I found it really difficult when I came out. I grew up being referred to as Egypt’s favorite son and then the day after I came out the press ran a headline calling me public enemy number one and that hit me really hard going from one extreme all the way to the other. What encouraged me was when I started to receive messages from LGBT youth in the Middle East thanking me for my courage. I realized that if I helped one person it was a positive experience. That brought me out of my dark place. What does being a gay activist mean to you? You know it’s so funny because I don’t consider myself an activist. I’m just a person with a story. At the end of the day I suppose if you share your story that makes you an activist. So at a certain level, everyone that’s out, everyone that goes to the marches and participates in a pride event or participates at the OutGames is an activist of sorts because they are sharing their story. That’s the quickest way to appeal to people’s hearts and minds. Share your story. Your grandfather was a famous actor; do you feel any pressure from your bloodline? I think there were a lot of expectations on me that I would be a lot like him. You know he was a renowned women’s man, he was a sex symbol, he was you know all of these things. He was a hyper masculine Arab with a beard. But there’s no right way or wrong way to live up to expectations. I did feel a lot of pressure growing up but I no longer feel that. I’ve taken a different path and I didn’t end up in the same place but its no better or worse, it’s just different. I guess this is an easy transition, you mention that your grandfather was a ladies man, what is your love life like now? Are you seeing anyone? I am very single (laughs). I’ve been single for a couple of years now. Um. You know, I aspire to be in a committed relationship. There’s no right or wrong type of relationship but you know that’s sort of what I am looking for. I was offered a role actually to be on a reality dating show being the lead person and I didn’t think that was the right way to go about finding true love. So I think I am still exploring the best avenues to find that right person.

BRIEFENCOUNTER So many people think you’re so hot, so what kind of guy are you looking for? You know I am very fortunate that I am from a family that loves me unconditionally. We are very close and I speak to my parents all the time. So it would be someone with strong family values, a good sense of self and really the expression salt of the earth is really what I am looking for. Just someone with good values. Maybe a good Midwestern boy. (laughs) Where do you live now? I live in New York City! Yeah? What do you love most about New York? I love the energy. Every day I have something new to explore, something new to see and someone new to speak to. I’m never bored. But on the converse side, I am always tired. There’s so much to do here.

think so often the LGBT community itself, as diverse and as beautiful as it is, we sometimes pillar ourselves with people like ourselves. I think this is such a great unifying force and I am excited to be involved with the OutGames. Do you play any sports yourself? My favorite sport is hockey. I grew up playing hockey. Even when I was living in Egypt she used to drive me two hours everyday to the closest ice skating rink to practice my skating and to practice playing hockey. I still watch a minimum 82 hockey games per year to watch the Montreal Canadians play.

Speaking of doing a lot, I saw that you were recently honored as the Grand Marshall of Prague Pride. What was that like for you? It was really special. It was the first time I was a Grand Marshall of a pride parade. Central and Eastern Europe doesn’t have the greatest track record on LGBT rights and they are making great strides. To know that their pride went from a couple thousand a few years ago to more than 40,000 this year is remarkable. Prague can be that beacon of hope for all the neighboring states.

I see that you were the national spokesperson for GLADD (Gays and Lesbians Allied Against Defamation), how did you react to the Pulse Orlando attack? (long pause) … You know the Pulse attack definitely hit me hard, both as an LGBT person and as an Arab. I am still trying to make sense of the tragedy and that’s something I’ve been speaking to a lot. What that man, and I won’t name him, I don’t think he deserves to be mentioned, is not representative of how the majority of peace loving Arabs feel. At the same time, I felt so victimized because the entire LGBT community does. I just find myself flabbergasted and confused by the sense of victimization that I feel. It’s really tough. I still struggle with it every single day.

This year you’re the guest of honor at the World OutGames Silver Soiree in Miami. What made you want to be a part of this? I think the OutGames is a tremendous event. What I love most about it is no matter where you come from, your background or what language you speak, sports can sort of be that universal language for everyone. When we all come together and play sports there’s more that unifies us than divides us. I

What’s ahead for you? Anything exciting? I have two projects coming soon. One of them is premiering in a couple weeks. It’s called The Secret Scripture where I have a very small role. And then another television show which they haven’t allowed me to start talking about it. Just more acting and more being visible, whether that’s in terms of speaking out or just living my life. I think it is important to stay visible. N SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 21

Brooklyn’s Ian Daniel prepares for the second season of “Gaycation” that takes him and best buddy Ellen Page across the globe in search of queer stories. BY ALEXANDER KACALA

Ian Daniel’s first dance at a gay bar wasn’t with a trick. It was with his mom. “The first time I danced at a gay bar was with my mother in Indiana when I was 23. She loves gay bars, queer people, the sense of community created in those spaces.” Raised in southern Indian by his single mom, his father was a rock drummer who hit the road after his parents divorced when he was one. No men in sight, Daniel developed his identity through his relationships with the strong and resilient women nurturing him. Later, Daniel’s relationship with another strong woman would thrust him into a national spotlight he hesitantly enters. As the Co-host and Executive Producer of Viceland’s Emmy-nominated TV show “Gaycation,” Daniel travels the world uncovering queer narratives with friend and actress Ellen Page. From the threat of the rising far-right in Ukraine to the deep-rooted traditions of India, in season two Page and Daniel gain a deeper understanding of how queer people navigate their identities around the globe. On the outside, the show seems like a star vehicle for Page with Daniel cast as her trusty sidekick, but his resume proved he was well qualified for the position. “I was curating art exhibits and art events and was working for The Civilians Theater Company as the Director of Artistic Programs,” he told me over cold brew and green tea after we traipsed all over the High Line in search of the perfect photo opt for our cover. (We never found it.) “There, I was working in documentary theater interviewing tons and tons of people. I just felt really practiced in the art of interviewing.”

The idea for “Gaycation” came up during a conversation when Page was staying at her friend Spike Jonze’s house here in New York City. Jonze, the Co-President of Viceland, was brainstorming possible show ideas for the channel and asked Page for her input. She brought up what would later be “Gaycation,” and Jonze saw something in the seedling of this idea. He recommended Page bring someone along on her journeys, but who? Would it be another celebrity with an influence and Instagram following? Or an actual friend? Daniel’s name was listed; whose work, relationship with Page, and sexuality made sense for the project. “The gay thing came up of course, so the conversation went, ‘I have a gay friend. He works in documentary art and knows how to talk to people.’ And then I did a screen test on the streets of New York.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILSONMODELS

“I was having more and more conversations with people and getting use to interview styles,” he explains. “I have an inherent interest in documentary filmmaking and filmmaking in general and connecting with people. Listening and embedding myself and immersing myself as much as possible in their world. I thought that Vice had as much as those elements that align with my interests. I like Vice’s documentary work and was interested in the depths they go to get the story.”

ONTHECOVER That went well, I guess. And we then did the first episode. Since then, it just sort of has been a domino effect.” That domino effect will actually lead Daniel to venturing out onto his own for two episodes later this season when he travels to the deep South and France. The LGBTQ subject matter of the show was Daniel’s biggest draw to the project. “That was intriguing to me. Also, I had never been public with being a gay man. That was a decision to make and I just thought that the topics Ellen wanted to talk about were really important and I felt like I was ready to focus on that.” So what is the show’s angle? The show’s angels is a “high and low” approach to gay travel, uncovering nightlife, underground scenes, art scenes, and then also taking a stab at political and emotional issues that at times put the pair in hyper-intensive situation uncovering these stories. “It really is about the struggles that people go through in each of the countries we visit and also how people fight back and triumph over their discrimination. It really is about oppression but also about the joys in people’s lives.” The future of American LGBTQ activism is going to be an informed awareness and consciousness of the struggles that exist abroad as we here have been rewarded- as least systemically – with many freedoms and rights not awarded in the rest of the world. “Gaycation” seems to be a trailblazer when it comes to this type of thought process – as Page and Daniel are highlighting important foreign stories of oppression to a primarily American demographic. Take for instance Uganda where a recent pride parade was raided by police. Or Qatar where an 18 year old who goes by the name Luxy on social media was arrested for wearing make up on Instagram and “being gay.” But Daniel says there is still work left to be done here at home. “I think it’s complicated,” he corrects. “I think there are a lot of big issues here that laws can’t fix clearly. There is just so much discrimination and hateful messaging. There is something really interesting politically happening here and you see it in the campaign. But yeah, by traveling around the south and doing an U.S. episode in the first season, you see how systemic homophobia and racism come into play and it is a big issue in our country. I do think it’s still a long road. But yes, when you are looking at the general framework of LGBTQ rights in terms of laws, the movement in terms of legal framework, we have more rights than other countries for sure.” Orlando was a tragic reminder of that work we have to do here at home. In the wake of Pulse, the media scuffled to create content, bombarding a broken community to break the story first.

LGBTQ journalists especially struggled with sharing this narrative, as it was extremely difficult to report on events that affected our community so deeply. Our people were taken from us, yet we were still expected – now more than ever – to show up to work and share this story. Daniel was in southern Indiana, saying goodbye to his grandfather who had just passed away the day before. A routine Sunday morning glimpse into Facebook at the breakfast table wasn’t so routine. It was there that he discovered a club in Orlando was attacked and he lost more family, a different kind of family, but family none the less. As his blood family was preparing to bury someone, Daniel was coping with the loss of 49 brothers and sisters taken from us too soon.

That Sunday, he sat next to his grieving grandmother watching CNN as news rolled out about what happened those early morning hours. “She was processing my grandfather’s death and I was processing that also but then feeling that my community has been really affected. And my family was coming over to be there for my grandmother and I am processing this atrocity and I don’t think they were able to understand that I was taking this so personally.” Daniel’s initial reaction, like many, was to go down there and do something. “That’s the initial impulse in tragedy. So of course, we were like, ‘We should go. We should try and see what “Gaycation” can do.’ Because we have this show, we have this container, we really are here to talk about people’s oppression and how they overcome this daily violence that happens just because of who they are. We felt a responsibility and a need to pay respect. We just wanted to be present.” As they were figuring it out, Page and Daniel took a step back to re-examine their intentions. Like many who struggled within our community, they wanted to add something special to the overwhelming barrage of information that was flooding social media feeds and headlines across the world. “What are we going to add to this? What does it mean to enter a space of trauma and have people talk about it?” They did go down, and filmed what will be the first episode SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 27

of this upcoming season already available online. The importance of the gay bar, an institution sort of deemed unnecessary by the acceptance of gayness in recent years, was one take way many of us had from that tragedy - including Daniel. “I think the Orlando tragedy made us all reflect on the importance and significance of the gay bar and LGTBQ spaces in general. When we were in Orlando, I was definitely thinking about how vital going to gay bars is for so many people and has been for me personally in learning about, expressing my identity, my sexuality, and finding a space of freedom, where I could celebrate my queerness.”

wanted them to be told and they are very poignant. We will one day look back on that episode as an amazing document to have of that daily struggle. Not even in the atrocity of the shooting but regarding those people’s daily existence.” When reflecting on Orlando, the story of Brenda McCool reminds him of that day 11 years ago when he twirled with his mom on the dancefloor of a nightclub in Indiana. “So the story of the mother who was shot at the Pulse club that night while she was there with her son really hit me, hit us all hard I think. These are intended to havens on away from aggression, spaces of intimacy and connectivity. And for many these spaces feel like home and the people there become family, especially for those who have been rejected by their families or have no families to go home to.” “They are saying I don’t have a family. My family rejected me. So I went to this bar so I could find a new family. I found a new family. Then we went out one night to meet my entire new family and they all were murdered. So that new family is gone and my family hasn’t even called me to ask if I was at the club because they don’t give a shit. That to me is the fucking reality for a lot of people. That’s why we make this fucking show.”

“I reflect too on the privilege of having these spaces and having so many of them in America,” he explains. “Because in many countries around the world there's not a single LGBTQ bar or space, they would be targets of violent attacks on the daily or it would be illegal to convene there. It's good to be reminded to be grateful for our bars and spaces, and for the battles past and present to have them.”

“Gaycation” premieres Wednesday, September 7 at 10:30 pm on VICELAND. N

“Not in an opportunistic way, but I am living in an opportunity. This came about because of who I am in general. It came about very naturally. There was never anything forced – the friendship. For me, I am so happy I met this person. Ellen to me truly – and I mean this so sincerely – is this beautiful gift in my life. To have this amazing friend and we are doing these amazing things together too. I’m one of those people who looks at the universe providing me with this opportunity.” “We look at the show as a privilege. I am privileged to have the show because Ellen presented the idea and she was able to use her privilege to have the show. But Orlando was a matter of not getting down there and getting the story. It’s like here, I have this privilege, which is this container, this show to tell these stories. The stories are so genuine. So real. They 28 SEPTEMBER 7, 2016

Privilege is something Daniel thinks a lot about. With the success of “Gaycation” comes some celebrity that Daniel is dealing with, too. Used to being in the shadow of Page, he is now making a name for himself. When asked about living in that shadow, Daniel reframes the experience as living in her opportunity.

uxury means different things to different people. For some, it’s as simple as having something done for you that you’d normally have to do yourself. For others, it implies grand-scale decadence, immersive attractions and elegant amenities that set a place or experience apart from all other options. In singular ways, these five destinations subscribe to all of those definitions, representing perfect vacation getaways for lovers of the luxe. PALMA DE MALLORCA In addition to its safe harbor for the mega-yachts of the über-wealthy, Palma de Mallorca has long been known as a popular playground for the rich and royal of Spain’s Balearic Isles. Former King Juan Carlos is often spotted taking a break from his duties at the island’s swankier watering holes, while other bold-faced names—from Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, who until recently owned a 247-acre estate on the island, to Paris Hilton—have all made the pilgrimage to this rustically luxurious spot. For the most luxe stay of all, the Belmond La Residencia, Deia, is the leading choice. Once owned by Richard Branson, it’s the luxury hotel in which Princess Diana famously took refuge when her marriage to Charles reached its well-publicized breaking point, and it’s also the site of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday celebration, for which the entire hotel was hired. How’s that for discriminating? Best of all, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera are all just a short ferry ride away. LAS VEGAS The most common misconception about Las Vegas is that its primary appeal is gaming. The truth is there’s so much more to do in Sin City than take turns among the plentiful blackjack tables and slot machines. In fact, with very little effort, you can treat yourself to a luxe holiday with no gambling whatsoever—easy given that there’s more luxury per square foot here than almost anywhere in the world. Wondering where to start? There’s pampering at a memorable array of spas, like the sleek, modern BATHHOUSE Spa at the Delano, the massive 80,000-square-foot Spa at the Aria and the serenely gorgeous Spa at the Mandarin Oriental. Combined with upscale shopping experiences at the Wynn Esplanade and the Shops at Crystals, fine dining at restaurants helmed by revered chefs—Alain Ducasse’s Rivea at the Delano, Julian Serrano’s Lago at the Bellagio and Michael Mina’s Bardot Brasserie at the Aria—an assortment of shows featuring the biggest names in music and entertainment and VIP limo service to and from everything, what could make for a more decadent getaway?

LONDON It’s fitting that home for the British royal family would also house an escape filled with luxe delights. From the old-world elegance of the Goring Hotel (where Queen Elizabeth II is a regular guest for afternoon tea) to the sumptuous retail offerings of Bond Street and Dover Street (where Victoria Beckham opened the flagship store for her wildly successful eponymous clothing line) to the five-star hotels in May Fair and Knightsbridge (think the classically sophisticated Egerton House, the landmark Claridge’s, the esteemed Connaught and the Firmdale Hotel’s Knightsbridge outpost), luxury is London’s forte. Fill your itinerary with visits to the certified providers of goods and services to the royal household and you’ll find yourself in luxe overload. CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA If there’s one word that best describes this seaside town, it would be surreal. Santa Barbara may be heralded by many as California’s answer to the Riviera, but Carmel-by-theSea is endowed with a better claim to the title. A charming boutique-filled town commingled with an unspoiled beach dramatically surrounded by bluffs and a rugged coastline evokes the feeling of la dolce vita best embodied by the likes of Capri and St. Tropez. Among the favorite stops for an elegant stay in Carmel is the Doris Day-owned Cypress Inn in the heart of town and the Clint Eastwood-owned Mission Ranch, where the vistas (along with the company at the bar) are otherworldly. TURKS AND CAICOS Extremely elegant accommodations specializing in privacy, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, perfect weather yearround, a steady flow of rum-inspired cocktails and not a care in the world make Turks and Caicos a standout among luxe travel getaways. Moreover, if a destination is to be judged by the star power of its regular visitors, it’s a winner on multiple levels. Among the islands’ starry visitors of late are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who spent their holidays at Donna Karan’s villa in Parrot Cay; Justin Bieber; Christie Brinkley; and newlyweds Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, who spent their seven-day honeymoon holed up in a remote villa at the exclusive Parrot Cay Resort. Need we say more? N — D.W. SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 31

FITNESS Here, we list six benefits to getting your D wet. Missionary, doggy style, or riding; on the floor, in the club, or on the roof; spit, lube, or lotion; top, bottom, or flip; if you’re like me you like it all of the ways mentioned above and more. Sex is one of the greatest parts of life. However, sex is more than just a quick fun blast of pleasure sure to make the sheets messy. There are many health benefits to having sex. Here are six of them.

1.Calories will burn while you thrust and churn The thrusting, bouncing, grinding, rolling, and wrestling are all physical activities that will get you breathing heavy in more than one way. According to Men’s Health, “a raucous romp uses about 5 METs (metabolic equivalents), a system for gauging the intensity of physical activity. For example, a 190-pound man would burn 413 calories in an hour of vigorous sexual activity.” So, don’t skip the foreplay!

2.Relieve your stress as you jerk and caress. We can all imagine the feeling of euphoria as we come closer to the big release. According to the Wall Street Journal, “The rush of hormones boosts mood, fosters feelings of closeness and helps manage stress for days.”

3.Shoot on that chest for a great night’s rest. As most of us know, after getting off we tend to be a little groggy. To help ensure you get a good night’s rest, be sure to have sex before bed or at least give each other head.

4.Your heart will grow strong from doing it all night long.

A sexually active lifestyle is not just for the young. Having sex regularly can drastically reduce risks of heart disease. The British Psychological Society states, “In a Welsh heart disease study from 1997, the mortality risk was 50 percent lower in the group of men with high orgasmic frequency (twice a week or more) than in the group with low frequency.”

5.That fountain of goo can make a younger you. There are several factors that contribute to aging, but Dr. David Weeks, a consultant clinical psychologist and former Head of Old Age Psychology suggests, “The key ingredients for looking younger are staying active and maintaining a good sex life.”

6.Plow that hole for a happier soul! Money cannot buy happiness, but sex can. The release of endorphins during intimacy can bring upon a euphoric feeling that can last the rest of the day/ night. So my advice is to have sex daily for a happier life! One thing not to forget, cuddle after! Some of you may disagree, but make your partner(s) feel like you care when the love making is complete. The world does not revolve around you and you should respect and appreciate the person(s) that helped you achieve your climax. Always use protection and talk to your partner(s) before engaging in a sexual act. Know who you blow!
