LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Be the change you wish to see in the world. I have always treasured Gandhi's words. They express an idea I often think. They resonate deeply with me as a strong reminder to walk the walk you talk and that actions always speak louder than words. Since 1993, Next Magazine has used words to tell the story of New York's LGBT community. Next has seen quite a lot of changes this past year. We have improved in so many ways, yet faced obstacles we have had to overcome. But the latest change is something we're really excited about and hope you are too. When looking for new office space, our publisher Kevin Hopper stumbled across an opportunity to become a "Community Partner" with the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC). This partnership actually already existed between our two organizations, but this new opportunity meant that we would share office space with GMHC at their headquarters at 446 West 33rd Street. The GMHC and their space were recently in the headlines as 35 years ago, on August 11, a group of men gathered in Larry Kramer's living room and changed the course of history. GMHC CEO Kelsey Louie wrote, "Fear was spreading rapidly since The New York Times published the first article about AIDS, titled 'Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals,' July 3 of that year. There is no way to put into words how hard and scary it was to be a gay man during that time. So on August 11, 1981, a group of brave men gathered in Larry Kramer’s living room, and together they set a course to change history." As I walked in GHMC's space (which is thankfully now much larger than a living room) for our first day with excitement and nerves, I passed by community members in the waiting room perusing our magazine while waiting for the important services GMHC has to offer. The work organizations like GMHC do is extremely important for our community, as our health is best taken care of when we take care of each other, helping those who may not be able to get the help they need from anywhere else. I was also reminded the work we do at Next is important as well, as our community's stories are best told when we tell them ourselves. Next wasn't there in 1981, but I can't help but wonder what the headline would have been if it was. It probably wouldn't have used words like "they" and "them", and used words like "us" and "our". We are very excited to tell these important stories and we can't wait to share what's next for us all. Alexander Kacala Editor-In-Chief 6 AUGUST 31, 2016

GOT GAY-TENTION DEFICIT DISORDER?

From the hot topics to the hot messes, here is what you may have missed last week. PRINCE MATERIAL Logo announced the boys on Finding Prince Charming, a gay The Bachelor coming to Logo this fall hosted by Lance Bass. Well, it's hard to believe - but only one of the 13 eligible bachelors is from New York City - and he is hot as fuck. His name is Chad and he is vying for the heart of interior designer Robert Sepulveda Jr. who is the object of everyone's affection. Go to nextmagazine.com to meet Chad. FRANK'S OCEAN Frank Ocean finally released his new album Blonde exclusively on Apple Music. The highly anticipated album is Ocean’s first release in four years, following the success of the critically acclaimed album Channel Orange. So after such a long wait, how does this album stack up? Go to nextmagazinefl.com to find out. 14 AUGUST 31, 2016

BRITNEY'S BIG WEEK It’s a big week for Britney Spears fans, as her new album Glory is officially out today. If you’re more a fan of the classics she’s got you covered too though, running through her own greatest hits with James Corden for ‘Carpool Karaoke’. She and the Late Late Show host ran through the likes of ‘Toxic’, ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’, and ‘Womanizer’, but the undoubted highlight has to be their rendition of ‘Baby One More Time’, complete with Corden in full Britney drag. MADGE @ MOMA Madonna surprised 400 fans at a 25th anniversary screening of her documentary, Madonna: Truth or Dare, on last week at the Museum of Modern Art. US Weekly writes, "Dressed in a red off-the-shoulder dress, the Queen of Pop, 58, stunned die-hard devotees when

she unexpectedly joined them for the celebration of the film — an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at her iconic Blond Ambition tour interlaced with bits of her personal life and on-the-road moments with her crew of dancers and backup singers. The movie was originally released in May 1991." TWINKLE TOES Amidst his falsified police report in Brazil drama, it was announced that Ryan Lochte will be on the next season of Dancing With The Stars that begins on September 12. After four lost endorsement deals, maybe this will salvage his reputation?

BRIEFENCOUNTER

hen David Hernandez competed on American Idol back in 2008, his singing career was overshadowed by rumors that he was gay. Now, eight years later, he’s here to set the record straight with his new single ‘Beautiful’. Hernandez officially came out in a new interview with OUT, explaining that “this song resonates with me. The lyrics are just so powerful. This is who I am, take it or leave it.” We quickly chatted with him to find out more ourselves. I just listened to your new song and it's actually really good! Thank you. You know the reception for this song has been really good. I truly am surprised at how much love and support everyone is showing for it. I was out at karaoke last night, and at least two or three people came over who I don't even know and complimented me on it. I also just saw a video of this kid pay tribute to his friend who has passed away in a freak accident and he used the song in the background. I was like balling in my kitchen watching it. That's really intense! It's super intense! That's life. It just goes to show we all need a positive message once and awhile - we are just such so saturated with all of this negativity, with the media and people dying and all of that. So just to inject a little bit of positivity in the world feels really nice. Yeah. The track is kind of a little bit like diva-ish. I get these vibes of Cyndi or Cher in a really good way. Like an anthemic sort of quality? I will take that as a compliment. I would love to sit in those ranks. You're back in headlines not only because of your song, but also because of your interview with OUT. You're having a moment. What do you want to be the message or takeaway for people from this experience? This was never intended for publicity. The way this all happened was I was doing an interview with the San Diego Gay and Lesbian News for an upcoming show and I was talking with the interviewer and he asked about the gay community. I said, "I think we are super divided at times and we need to support each other more." And he was like, " Oh, so you're gay?" And I was like, "Yeah!" It just slipped out. Legit. I didn't intend for any of this. My publicist then saw the article and was like, "Hey. If you're gonna be out, lets spread this message." And I agreed. Over the last eight years, I have had younger LGBTQ fans message me with their stories and struggles and I have never been able to share my story or my struggles being from a Mexican family in the projects. At this level in my career and my life, I want to use whatever platform I have to speak to people in those small towns or across the world. You can be exactly who you are and be successful in the music industry or whatever industry you want to be in. That was the driving force to get me to "come out" because everyone who knows me knew I was gay. They have known that for years. I have seen some of the backlash online that I am only doing this to sell albums. I don't need to do this to sell albums. I would just like to reach out to people who is the little boy who I was who was struggling with being himself. I saw one comment saying, "I never knew he was in." There is a difference being out publicly in your career and being out personally. Sharing every facet of who you are with the world is a very vulnerable thing and you shouldn't rush anyone to do that. 16 AUGUST 31, 2016

LO VE EVERYBODY SAY

A Message From The Summer Of 2016 BY ROYTEL MONTERO

Though it seems an unlikely relative to what was famously dubbed the “summer of love,” the summer of 2016 has, in essence, felt a lot like 1967. The psychedelic, free-loving message of the hippies and bohemians is less of a stretch today, when a summer of social uproar and tragedy has begged us to return to a simple but time-trusted message -- love. The season had barely started when I woke up on June 12th to hear 49 of our brothers and sisters were killed in a shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. It was shocking to think a space so sacred and so frequented was suddenly so vulnerable to horrific attack. The event jolted me into a strange, devastating reality. Friends were texting to check if I was alright. I wasn't so sure what to tell them. The Christopher Street I walk past everyday to work was closed off, now a scene of high-alert and site for mourners at the historic Stonewall. I met a friend at a vigil there to pay our respects. Neither of us knew quite what to say. Having come to New York just six years ago, I only knew the queer utopia where you come to live freely and meet your peers. The tragic event warped the safe, accepting place that is New York into a grieving ground. Would be we be next? The question was a natural one, the bars and clubs that felt like havens had targets on them. The 49 faces flashing all over the news looked just like ours, their Saturday night plan no different from my own. The tears and loss brought on a second thought: these moments can either break a community or be the impetus for great action. Though fear and hatred seemed to permeate, we kept our spirits high. In the streets and in the bars, the love parade continued. We met terror and hatred with bravery and pride. Around the country, Pride events went on with dazzling resilience. On June 26th in New York, I saw 49 people dressed in white veils walk down Fifth Avenue under a clear-blue sky and thousands of rainbow flags in celebration of love. My heart soared for each one of those people, the crowd’s cheers lifting them to the heavens. We honored the lives of those lost and prayed for their families. We danced in the street and sang love out loud. If Orlando was an event that caused deep suffering, the aftermath birthed a deeper reverence for love and its power to heal. I refer to the supermodel of the world, RuPaul, shouting “Everybody say love!” so famously throughout his career. Mother Ru wasn't just right when she told us to sissy that walk, but to say love, be love and trust that love will change the world. Through this season and the next to come, keep the message clear: Act with love and live with pride. AUGUST 31, 2016 19

ONTHECOVER

Summer vacation is over. The bitches are back in homeroom for Season 2 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, where anything can happen as last week's premiere showed us. With a crazy twist where the queens will be eliminating each other, the coursework just got a whole lot harder and much more interesting. Sure, they may have graduated their class with high honors the first time around, but this is AP and Professor Ru is giving out lots of demerits. The All Star freaks and geeks took over Therapy Lounge in Hell's Kitchen with photographer David Ayllon for their very own photo day. In their varsity best, the queens brought their permission slips and handed in their book reports right on time. Between photo flashes, we chatted with the pupils about anatomy, gay vocabulary, cliques, and favorite teachers - reminding us all that a good ed-RUcation starts with creativity and always ends with talent. For their interviews and more photos, go to nextmagazine.com. RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 2 airs Thursdays this fall on Logo at 8:00 pm. Let your travels be the gateway to adventure, and find yourself in one of these spectacular destinations. BY ERIC ROSEN

TRAVEL

I

t was French author André Gide who said, “It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves—in finding themselves.” How true. For it is only in those moments of uncertainty, unbalance and unexplained wonder that we truly grasp who we are and who we could be. In that spirit, let your travels be the gateway to adventure, and perhaps you’ll find yourself in one of these spectacular destinations.

hours’ drive from Darwin. Book a stay at a luxury camp like Bamurru Plains and spend your days air-boating over the Mary River Wetlands (beware the crocs!), trekking with Aborigines to millennium-old cave paintings and helicoptering over herds of water buffalo. Those with a more independent streak can rent a caravan and explore the park’s byways and billabongs on their own of the course of weeks or even months.

GREENLAND This once-inaccessible landmass in the great white north is also one of the world’s most exciting undiscovered adventure destinations. Visitors have their choice of high-adrenaline activities, including dog-sledding on the vast tundra, snowmobiling across limitless ice fields, whale watching in some of the world’s most pristine waters and hiking massive glaciers. The town of Ilulissat, with its famous painted houses, is the main staging point for many of these, as well as multi-day treks to the nearby fjords. September-April this year will be one of the best times in living memory to see the aurora borealis, so book a ticket soon. Catch flights to Nuuk, the capital, from Reykjavik or Copenhagen.

MONGOLIA Mongolia spent much of the 20th century sequestered from the rest of the world, so it’s easy to forget that nomads from its vast grasslands and deserts once forged an empire stretching from the Pacific to Europe. But that history is writ large in the wide open spaces just waiting to be explored by contemporary adventurers. Visitors can wander centuries-old Buddhist complexes like Erdene Zuu and ruined cities like Karakorum, built by Genghis Khan’s son. Head to the remote Three Camel Lodge luxury camp for days spent tracking snow leopards in the Gegeet Valley and hunting for dinosaur eggs near the red sandstone Flaming Cliffs, and your nights warmed by the fire from a hand-painted wood-burning stove in your very own traditional ger.

BOTSWANA First-time safari-goers might opt for South Africa or Tanzania, but Botswana is not only among the most stable countries in Africa, it also boasts some of the continent’s most ecorich national parks. Its awesome landscapes include the fertile Okavango Delta, where visitors can have the unique experience of a canoe safari, exploring its myriad waterways at eye-level with wildlife. Splurge on a stay at Belmond Eagle Island Lodge for a one-of-a-kind safari experience and bespoke excursions. For a taste of something different, head to the Central Kalahari Game reserve, where you can spot rare cheetahs in the wild. NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA It might have been the setting for Crocodile Dundee, but Australia’s Northern Territory is truly one of the world’s great wildernesses. For first-timers, the place to visit is Kakadu National Park, just a few

MONTANA 2016 marks the centennial of the National Park Service, and there are nearly 60 national parks and countless other landmarks to explore. Even if you’ve rafted through the Grand Canyon, hiked the Appalachian Trail and dodged geysers in Yellowstone, there’s still plenty of territory to cover, including Glacier National Park. Take a canoe out on Lake McDonald, hike the Grinnell Glacier or careen down Going-to-the-Sun Road by mountain bike. When you’ve had enough roughing it, spend time glamping in safari-style tents along a burbling creek at the Ranch at Rock Creek. There, you can perfect your horseback skills or spend mornings fly fishing before regaling everyone with fish tales over sumptuous multicourse meals in the main lodge. N —E.R. More travel tips? TO PUT ON MASS

WITHOUT TAKING STEROIDS BY DAN WELDEN

32 AUGUST 31, 2016

FITNESS

S

Put on weight - the healthy way.

ummer is winding down, the pool parties are coming to an end, and Fire Island beaches will soon be closed. Now is the time to start researching ways to put on mass while your not planning to dance shirtless at a beach party. Although, many of us still will be shirtless at an indoor circuit party somewhere in NYC. However, it’s more socially acceptable to put on a few pounds as we start to enter the holiday seasons. When I talk about gaining mass, I’m not referring to eating burgers and pizza until your heart fails. I’m referring to putting on some healthy weight to allow your muscle to have adequate fuel to burn while hitting it extra hard at the gym. There are many unhealthy ways to put on mass but those often come with negative side effects. Some will go toward steroids while others will use other growth enhancers. Though these may provide quick results, you’ll often see a dramatic loss in mass and strength when you cease to continue taking those enhancers. There are a few natural ways you can gain mass and strength without damaging your body. Below are three healthy alternatives to taking growth enhancers. Mass Gainers - Mass gainers can be found at most supplement stores. They are typically very high in fat and calories. Although they are effective for putting on mass, they can be expensive and difficult to consume the recommend dosage. I’d recommend starting with a quarter to a third of what the instructions say and building up from there. They can also make you feel bloated, so you probably would not want to take it right before the club or a date. Protein - Protein is everything! Most people do not consume enough lean proteins in general. Then when you factor in working out, you are most likely cutting yourself severely short of the recommended protein intake. The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends 1.5 - 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. Lean meat consumption should be your first place to look toward increasing, followed by nuts and dairy. There are also a vast number of protein supplements available but if you can get the required amount through eating properly, that should always be the route you choose. Carbohydrates - Carbohydrates are not necessarily your enemy. Your body needs fuel to burn in order to power through your workout and no, Truvada does not count as a carb. Focus on upping your grain and oat intake. Avoid sugar when possible. Whole grain pastas and breads can also be a good source, but again, avoid ones that are loaded with sugar. Remember to start slow and build up. A complete change in your diet is often difficult to adjust to but when making small changes over time, its a much smoother transition. Also, check with your doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet to ensure you may not face any health complications. Additionally, meet with a nutritionist or registered dietitian to create a meal plan that adequately meets your bodies nutritional needs.
