A VERY PAPA HALLOWEEN JARED NEEDLE SPILLS ON WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE UPCOMING PAPA, NOW AT IRVING PLAZA.

e were originally going to have Papa From Hell at the new Sankeys NYC, but needed a bigger space and what better space is there than a legendary New York institution like Irving Plaza? It has all the components of a great New York space. It’s great for concerts, it’s great for club nights and it’s got high ceilings. It has a massive ballroom dance floor so it’s perfect for a party this size. We’ll probably pack in 1516 hundred people in there. We’re also bringing in some great production because Irving Plaza has a proper stage. There’s going to be big LED displays and we hired a video artist to create content for the screens. We’re also flying in some performers from Israel who will be doing some crazy Halloween Papa From Hell shit on the stage. We’ll have Micky Friedman and Isaac Escalante set up right in the middle with the performances around them. It’s a sexy space and definitely has that New York grit. You walk in and feel like you’re in old New York. Since we started Papa, all of our New York parties have sold out, which is really kind of exciting. They’ve gotten larger each time and we’ve had to find larger venues. We started the Papa World Tour exactly a year ago Columbus Day Weekend. We had only done one party

Joseph Alfieris

AWARD-WINNING PUBLISHER and creative director Joseph Alfieris has been at the helm of a number of iconic brands over the years including Contents magazine, which he founded in 1992. Now, he’s bringing that experience to the new FourTwoNine where he’s serving as the director of photography. “With FourTwoNine we seek to display, in a singular way, how inseparable LGBT creativity is from all cultural achievement—high and low—and how unique it is as well,”says Alfieris. “[It] signals the arrival of a brilliant, original gay brand—urbane, compassionate, involved, smart—in every sense of the term.” The first issue of FourTwoNine, which launched last month, featured a stunning cover shot of Sarah Jessica Parker and Andy Cohen, which Alfieris says set the perfect tone for the new magazine. “Both of them singularly, make very positive contributions to the gay community.”

“I want people to leave thinking it was very playful and fun and positive.” like going to a rock concert. People stand there, waiting to take pictures with him. I think early on that got our foot in the door, but from then on what we’ve tried to do is be really creative with our marketing. We’ve been doing promo videos for each of the Papa parties that get hundreds of thousands of hits. That has helped broaden the appeal and lead to more successful parties. Inside the parties, we definitely try to keep things upbeat and positive. One of the things that I’ve found problematic at parties I go to is that there seems to be a dark energy that can often develop. You can go to parties and sometimes see people moving around like drones. Some people love that, but I wanted a more upbeat, high-energy and positive feeling with Papa. The theme “From Hell” is pretty selfexplanatory since it’s Halloween. But we didn’t want it to be scary Hell, we wanted to it be sexy Hell. I want people to leave thinking it was very playful and fun and positive. You can see from the promo video we released what we’re trying to do. It’s silly, campy and kitschy but also sexy. People get what we’re trying to do with Papa, and it seems to resonate. N —As told to Will Pulos

That was the reason people were taking notice, because he’s pretty famous, and so people were curious in other cities. In Europe, it’s

>>> MY GAY CITY COOKSHOP

PHOTO: SANTIAGO FELIPE

“IT WAS A FEW YEARS AGO that I first began frequenting Cookshop (156 10th Ave, CookShopNY.com)—the West Chelsea staple for trendy gays and the heteros that love them run by chef Marc Meyer of 5 Points and Hundred Acres. Being just steps away from both Chelsea galleries and the High Line, Cookshop is the perfect place for afternoon refueling. Although I’ve been there for both lunch and dinner, it’s Cookshop’s brunch that keeps me coming back. First of all, you can select from a slew of different Bloody Marys including a mezcal, rye, house-infused bacon vodka or gin Bloody Mary, made with fresh ingredients such as cilantro, applewood-smoked bacon, fresh horseradish or something as simple as a lettuce leaf. But if Bloody Marys aren’t your cup of tea, there’s also a cocktail list that’s just as creative. I usually opt for the Cookshop ‘champ’made with champagne, sorrel liqueur and St. Germaine. It tastes like Christmas! Once you’ve gotten your buzz going, it’s on to some of the signature starters like spiced apple beignets, moistened with DiPalo’s fresh ricotta and served with a fresh fruit coulis. As Cookshop is farm-to-table focused, the ingredients change seasonally, and what you see one week you may not see the next. But some of the mainstays are the Cookshop scramble with caramelized onions, crème fraîche and chives, served with a buttermilk biscuit, and huevos rancheros with Monterey Jack, lime crème fraîche and pickled jalapeños. And I never leave without having a dish of their chipotle-spiced potato hash!” —Patrick Bradley, 34-year-old culinary blogger and columnist residing in Inwood

COME OUT AND PLAY HEY SPORTY SPICE! GET OUT THERE AND WORK IT WITH SOME OF THESE GAY SPORTS LEAGUES.

s the autumn air brings with it a slight chill, we’re reminded of the return of fall and winter sports. It’s time to get out there and get some exercise— other than lifting a cocktail or walking two blocks to meet that guy from Grindr. First off, instead of going to a bar to meet guys, try going to BARS. That’s Big Apple Recreational Sports. BARS is a three-in-one sports organization hosting dodgeball, kickball and bowling. “We are a competitive league, but we found one of the things our players are most excited about is the friends and relationships they make within the league,” says Commissioner Stephen Moreau. You can also slip ’n’ slide with the New York City Gay Hockey Association, now in its 14th year. The NYCGHA manages six coed teams at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. Games are on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and evenings. Beginners and “rink rats” welcome. Get out of town and fly down a mountainside, or slowly make your way down the bunny-slope with the Ski Bums. Travel to some of the world’s most spectacular places, with a focus on getting to know new people. The Ski Bums have 20 trips planned in 2014—from Lake Placid, New York, to Chamonix, France. And look forward to their traditional “après-ski” gatherings: crisp beers, roaring fireplaces and gorgeous mountain views. Feel the need to dribble? Then the New York City Gay Basketball League is the place to be. Join these big boys as they run up and down the court at the Field House at Chelsea Piers on Sundays between 5pm and 8pm. “Our group is inclusive, diverse and dedicated to breaking down stereotypes of LGBT athletes,” says Kris Alspach, commissioner of the men’s division. Afterwards, join the boys for a post-game happy hour at some of the local bars that sponsor the league.

DELvING INTO THE OCCULT IN BUSHWICK’S qUEER ARTS SCENE.

"I think the whole idea of occultism is about experimenting with deviation and trying to investigate hidden truths and better consciousnesses.”

t’s a Tuesday night in early October and performance artist Paul Leopold has gathered a small group of friends and collaborators—including The Culture Whore editor and founder Mark Dommu and multimedia projection artist Salome Asega—at his studio in the basement of Bushwick’s Opera House Lofts. They’re here to see his current work-in-progress, a three-part, 30-minute series of performances he calls a“psychedelic queer tragedy of fantastical proportions.” Leopold stands on a platform in the middle of the room, draped in tattered strips of black industrial sheeting and strands of silvery LED Christmas lights, singing along to his pre-recorded backing track. He slips out of the sheeting and starts whipping his naked body with leather cords before winding them around his arms like the straps used by observant Jews to bind tefillin to their bodies. Afterward, Leopold pulls on a pair of lime green bike shorts and asks for some feedback. “What do you remember most about the piece? It could be an image or a feeling…” “It really felt like a ritual,” Dommu offers. “It felt like you were conjuring something. Asega says there were moments that reminded her of certain Santeria practices. “The genesis of the piece is the tension between hedonism and mortality, or the tension between light and dark,” Leopold explains later. “So, how far can you go exploring pleasure before you would fall off the deep end? That inherent tension, I think, is a lot of what the occult deals with. That darkness, that unknown, that hedonism that many people try to deny is something that the occult is all about and about treasuring and exploring.” Hedonism, ofcourse, issomethinggayperformers—andgaypeoplein general—havebeenexploringfordecades, maybeevencenturies.Theoccult, on the other hand, seems like a much more recent queer cultural obsession. By its nature, the occult deals with what is hidden and mysterious; with secrets revealed only to the initiated. But in the past few years, the occult—or at least its symbolism and trappings—has seeped into the broader culture. It’s everywhere from the tween Goth fashion blogs onTumblr to the inverted crosses and triangles on jewelry sported by north Brooklyn gays. It’s in the murky electro-pop of bands like Trust and Austra and the hazy, down-tempo witch-house-infused hip-hop of Zebra Katz. RuPaul’s DragRace even introduced Sharon Needles’campy macabre to the world of drag, and this month alone, two TV shows about witchcraft premiered—American Horror Story: Coven and Lifetime’s dreary The Witches of East End. Spotting Illuminati imagery in music videos has become something of a tongue-incheek pastime for some, a full-blown paranoid obsession for others. “I think it’s definitely around in our culture—both in popular culture and in underground culture. I think it’s feeding on each other from both ends,”Leopold says. “You see Rihanna doing all these Illuminati things or Ke$ha being like, let’s get fucked up and die young!” Something wicked is definitely loose in the zeitgeist—and nowhere more so than in Brooklyn’s queer performance scene. Leopold is just one of many performers and artists based in Bushwick whose work either explic-

itly deals with or is influenced by the occult. The Spectrum, Gage of the Boone and Nicholas Gorham’s queer event space and studio, seems to have become the de facto hub of the phenomenon, with their ritualistic performances and sabbat-like quasi-raves. And Secret Project Robot,Tandem and Bizarre, all located in the East Williamsburg/Bushwick creative epicenter, have all hosted their fair share of parties and happenings with an eye toward the occult. “It’s like a sneak attack with these parties,”says B.J. Dini. In addition to hisWilliam Blake-inspired performances, he helps curate and run events at The Spectrum that are designedto lure in people with the promiseofawildnightofdancinganddrinking, while also expanding their consciousness. “There’s still this sensibility, or hope that the party can do something more than get people hooked up and wasted,” Dini continues. “Bring ’em in for a good time, but also introducethemtothisweirdvortexorportalwherethey can experience a little something higher. That’s the hope—but it doesn’t always work!” “TheEastVillageusedtobewherethiswashappening back in the ’80s, maybe even Williamsburg in the ’90s, and now it’s being pushed out to Bushwick justbecausewecan’tallbemillionairesintheEastVillage!” says musician and video artist Daniel McKernan, whoseownworkdealswithastralprojectionand the hazy borders between realms of reality. “I think

"Maybe it’s about appropriating a symbol's power and using it for our own ends.” that it’s kind of a youth mentality. Not that everyone’s a teenager, but it’s like a fresh mindset.” McKernan is hesitant to diagnose what’s going on in the culture at large, but the affinity queer artists feel for the occult, he says, probably has a lot to do with queer culture’s comfort with risk-taking. “You can deviate and I think the whole idea of occultism is about experimenting with deviation and trying to investigate hidden truths and better consciousnesses,” he explains.“I think queer culture just lends itself to experimentation in general.” For a lot of gays in their 20s and early 30s, The Craft was their first exposure to the world of magic and mysticism. Recognizing a sense of powerlessness in that 1996 flop-turned-cult-classic about high-school-misfits-turned-witches and it inspired some to shoplift Llewellyn paperbacks on Tarot and

Wicca from Barnes & Noble and attempt half-baked love spells while listening to Siouxsie and the Banshees. But what’s going on in Bushwick’s queer occultist circles is the product of a more tense and paranoid time. Its aesthetic borrows from something darker and less comfortingly maternal than the earthy, nature-based religions inspired by neopagan beliefs about pre-Christian witchcraft. Dini points to the succession of end-of-theworld scenarios we’ve endured—Y2K, September 11, the Mayan calendar’s 2012 end date, even the government shutdown—as the catalysts for an increased exploration of the occult. “It’s like we’re training ourselves constantly. Is this finally the end? And if it’s the end, what’s beyond it?” But he does admit to a certain amount of skepticism when it comes to the greater cultural phenomenon. “Now I’m wondering if it’s just becoming this ironic thing. Now people go around wearing Illuminati symbols and it’s like a fashion thing and it’s like, oh the Illuminati hasn’t got us yet! Or maybe it’s about appropriating their power and using it for our own ends.” “I think it’s a post-post everything kind of reaction,” says Leopold. “Like post-9/11, where do we go? What about these old pagan things that we’ve forgotten about? Maybe we can find some answers there. Maybe there’s more magic to be had than we realize.” N

FRIDAY OCTOBER 25

WEEK

CURATOR THIERRY-MAXIME LORIOT ON THE FASHION WORLD OF JEAN PAUL GAULTIER.

ith his trademark irreverence and undeniable craftsmanship, fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s work gleefully occupies the glitter-strewn intersection of the art and fashion worlds. Starting October 25, fashion obsessed gays will have the rare opportunity to view an extensive selection of his work when The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opens at the Brooklyn Museum. Curator Thierry-Maxime Loriot has designed an immersive experience that blurs the lines between fashion and art, and turns the concept of a traditional museum exhibition on its head. “The idea I had was to present it as a contemporary installation about the passions and obsessions of Gaultier,”Loriot says of the exhibit’s innovative structure. Rather than present a straightforward retrospective, the model-turned-curator has arranged pieces thematically for the exhibition, which originated at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2011: the “Boudoir” section features the designer’s trademark corsetry, the “Punk Cancan” includes the edgy looks the name suggests, and so forth. Loriot has expanded these themes and wholly transformed the museum’s gallery to create a fully experiential visit. For example, one room features a runway with mannequins on a rotating conveyer belt to simulate the fashion show experience. “When I was a model, everyone was like, ‘My dream is to see a real fashion show,’ so I was like, ‘How can I do that for Gaultier?’” One of the biggest challenges was whittling down Gaultier’s extensive catalog to create a 150-piece representative show-

W

case.“It was a challenge,”Loriot says. “I wish it was possible to have an exhibit with 1,000 pieces.” In the end, he used Gaultier select pieces from past collections as well as film and concert performance collaborations. The exhibit features a striking number of rare couture creations. “Usually with haute couture, you never have access to it. I think it’s fantastic that people can have the experience to see this up close and to see how magnificent and unique it is.” One of Loriot’s favorite pieces, a gown that looks like leopard skin but is actually entirely pattered with tiny beads, took Gaultier 1,600 hours to create. In addition to these one-of-a-kind pieces, the exhibit also provides the opportunity to be in the presence of Material Girl iconography. Gaultier has collaborated with Madonna on five of her tours, including the groundbreaking Blonde Ambition tour in the early 1990s. The singer’s trademark gold corset (with the infamous coneshaped breasts) is on display, and ranks as one of Loriot’s favorites. “It’s so iconic. When you look at it up close you see that it’s vintage fabric from the 1930s that Gaultier found in Paris. Because she was Jean Paul Gaultier sweating so much, you see that it’s varGaultier’s legacy has been ce- whitewashed runway. “He didn’t go for nished, so it’s a bit greenish now.” Loriot hopes that beyond these de- mented by that commitment to breaking the obvious beauties that are standard in signs, patrons’ key takeaway will be a bet- boundaries and disrupting social norms. the fashion industry. “I THINK I ALWAYS KNEW I was gay growing up, but it was in High School when it was actually solidified. My drama teacher asked me to come by the classroom after school one day, at which point he sat me down in front of the TV and said: ‘Be quiet and just watch.’ He put in a copy of Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand. When it was over, and I was wiping tears away from my face, he asked: ‘Well?’ and I said ‘Career comes first, even when you find your Nicky Arnstein, always do a musical number on the bow of a ship whenever you get the chance and I’m gay. Got it.’”

RATING KEY:

ONE ROAR

The Right Track Delivering a Double Rainbow By Keo Nozari

aty Perry does the seemingly impossible with her new album Prism—she delivers a “Double Rainbow”! Literally, it’s one of the tracks on the disc. It’s a follow-up album as good as her previous effort, Teenage Dream. That disc’s history-making five Number One Billboard Hot 100 singles seemed an impossible task to repeat. But damn if she didn’t make an album just as chockfull of colorful hits. Since the first single “Roar”pounced to Number One, how much do the tracks roar on Prism by comparison? Here, we rate them. NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

K

1

“Unconditionally”

This epic power ballad focuses on learning how to love someone, you guessed it, unconditionally.

6

“Dark Horse” feat. Juicy J

Perry gallops gallantly into this trap music-infused track. Juicy J’s rap verse, however, is more weak mule than stallion.

It’s a loud roar for self-empowerment, a theme that dips its paws in throughout the album.

2

“This is How We Do”

“Legendary Lovers”

5/5

8

“International Smile”

Katy’s good friend DJ Mia Moretti wrote this song for her. We’d say it’s smile-worthy.

“Birthday”

This is sublime, feel-good pop at its best! It’s like “Teenage Dream” went to the funk-disco. Clever sexual innuendos with cake, gifts and one choice bridge line: “So let me get you in your birthday suit/ It’s time to bring out the big… balloons!”

12

“Double Rainbow”

Pure poetry! What’s extra impressive about this shimmering album highlight—which Perry co-wrote with Sia—is that it’s the first time an artist doesn’t sound like they are just doing an impersonation of Sia. Perry owns the vocals. The combination of the impeccable songwriting, Perry’s perfectly restrained, vulnerable delivery and Greg Kurstin’s production is breathtaking.

5/5

13

“By The Grace of God”

Deeply personal, “By The Grace of God” is a beautiful account of her struggles and a tribute to those who’ve helped her.

4/5

“Ghost”

One of several tracks that seem to reference experiences with ex Russell Brand, this track is good, but others are better.

3/5

Definitely one for the gay boys! A ’90s house-disco tribute to CeCe Peniston and early, C&C Music-produced Mariah Carey, “Walking on Air” is inspired by the roller stackers at the skate circle in Central Park.

50 OCTOBER 25, 2013

Again, a great message: learning to be present in the moment.

“Walking on Air”

4/5

“This Moment”

The sequel to “Last Friday Night” is a head-bopping, bottle-popping celebratory track produced by Klas Åhlund (a.k.a. Robyn) and Max Martin.

“Lovers” is an epic ballad that alternates between a whole slew of divergent influences over a driving beat.

Bottom Line: Perry shows definite growth and maturity without sacrificing her bubbly, fun nature. Prism is refreshingly positive and uplifting and also imbued with colorful variety: a pitch-perfect follow-up to Teenage Dream. N

“Love Me” actually isn’t an ode to another person—it’s a touching tribute to loving yourself.

The Whole Package By David Perry

BROUGHTTOABOIL AFTER BARILLA LEARNED MARKETING 101 THE HARD WAY, WE’VE FOUND SOME GAY-FRIENDLY PASTA YOU CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT CHEATING ON YOUR NO-CARB DIET WITH. here’s something about self-destruction that makes us want to watch. You know the kind: Titanic, Lindsay Lohan and, most recently, Barilla Pasta. When Barilla CEO Guido Barilla announced that his company would never make commercials featuring same-sex couples and “if gays don’t like that, they will eat someone else’s pasta,” guess what? We did—and we were followed by a legion of allies. The media had a field day and other pasta companies positively flipped: not only did Barilla alienate a fan base (check out Instagram for all the people throwing out their pasta), the man gave his competition an easy way to gain a leg up. Taking to the Internet with Facebook memes, Buitoni proclaimed “Pasta for all!” with some cunning gay-friendly tortellini imagery; Garofalo proclaimed, “We don’t care how you do it, so long as you do it al dente!” Long-time gay-ally Bertolli mixed and matched its pastas into couples of all sorts. “We just wanted to spread the news that Bertolli welcomes everyone, especially those with an empty stomach,” a company rep told AdWeek Magazine. In the hours that followed Barilla’s misguided statement, San Remo, Kraft, Pappardelle’s, Brooklyn-based Sfoglini, and—noodles not being solely an Italian invention—even Asian producers like Wanchai Ferry Wontons publicly hopped on the pro-gay bandwagon. To really put the nail in Guido’s coffin, the Human Rights Campaign quickly posted a list of pasta makers and brands, including Market Pantry, Chef Boyardee, DeBoles and Rosetto that score 90 or above on the HRC Corporate Equality Index. “The CEI is a transparent, objective assessment of LGBT policies and practices among the largest businesses in the US,” Liz Cooper, HRC Manager of Corporate Programs, Workplace Project, says. “Any brands from these highly-rated companies could qualify as LGBT-friendly based on our criteria and by purchasing from them as opposed to brands like Barilla, consumers can support those companies that support equality.” Alessandro Zan, a gay member of the Italian Parliament, tweeted, “You can’t mess around with consumers, including gay ones.” Aurelio Mancuso, head of Italian gay rights group Equality Italia, added, “We accept the invitation from the Barilla owner to not eat his pasta.” And Guido? Amazingly, as he contends with proliferating boycotts and his American subsidiary puts out fires, every time he opens his mouth, it just gets better. He tried to clarify, and “highlight the central role of the woman in the family,” a statement critics took to mean that women’s “central role” was in the kitchen cooking up pasta. He just recently issued a carefully worded apology on all counts. Looks like he’s eating his words. Too bad no one’s eating his pasta. N

Chita Rivera in Chita: A Lengendary Celebration

PHOTO: DANIEL ROBERTS

Curtain Up Chita: A Legendary Celebration The Model Apartment

THEATER

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

Romeo and Juliet By David Hurst o prove showbiz has no limits when it comes to age, Chita Rivera threw herself an 80th birthday party, Chita: A Legendary Celebration, as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS on October 7. Looking, sounding and dancing like $10 million dollars, Rivera dazzled the audience with a sleek nightclub act that touched on all her famous musical theater roles: Anita in West Side Story, Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, Charity in Sweet Charity, Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman and Velma in Chicago, just to name a few. Filled with sparkling patter, sexy backup boys, notable guest stars (Tommy Tune and Ben Vereen) and the legend herself, Chita: A Legendary Celebration entered the pantheon of unforgettable, one-in-a-lifetime nights! Where to begin to talk about Donald Margulies’ provocative play from the early 1980s, The Model Apartment? Joe Papp at The Public originally optioned the play, but nothing happened. Then Circle Rep was going to do it—and again, nothing. Finally it was staged in 1988 in Los Angeles, but Margulies had his arm twisted to change the ending, which bothered him. Finally, Primary Stages staged it in New York in 1995, the reviews were ecstatic and Margulies won an Obie Award. But the actor playing the father left the production the day after the reviews came out, dooming The Model Apartment to an aborted run and, perhaps, theatrical legend. Well, I missed the 1995 production, but I still don’t feel I’ve really seen Margulies’ play because the Primary Stages current revival is so badly cast, acted and directed that it’s almost

T

52 OCTOBER 25, 2013

impossible to evaluate it. (And, yes, I realize I’m distinctly in the minority on this one, but I’ve never been afraid to tell the Emperor when he’s naked!) Both a soul-crushing examination of a dysfunctional family with an obese, mentally unstable daughter who terrorizes her parents and an allegorical metaphor for the horrors of the holocaust and dealing with the guilt of surviving it, The Model Apartment is a devastating piece of writing. But you need actors who bring realism and authenticity to their roles or it falls flat. As the Jewish couple Max and Lola, Mark Blum and Kathryn Grody are dreadful. As Max and Lola’s demonic daughter Debby, Diane Davis flails around “acting” with broad strokes but no soul. As Debby’s boyfriend, Neil, the less said about Hubert Point-Du Jour the better. In New York there’s no excuse for bad casting, but that’s the overriding problem with director Evan Cabnet’s lackluster production of this play. It’s beautifully designed and the actors go through the motions, but The Model Apartment deserves more if it’s to resonate and pierce the heart as it should. I never dreamed that the Classic Stage Company’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet could be worse than the current Broadway incarnation, but I was sadly mistaken. Director Tea Alagic has driven her production off the cliff at CSC with terrible casting, ridiculous editing, stupefying costumes, non-existent design and mind-numbing staging. If you like lots of shouting and over-acting you’ll thrill to Julian Cihi’s Romeo, Elizabeth Olsen’s Juliet and, in particular, T.R. Knight’s misguided Mercutio. Other than the chiseled bodies of Dion Mucciacito’s Tybalt and Stan Demidoff’s Paris, the only other things to come out of Alagic’s Romeo and Juliet unscathed are Daphne Rubin-Vega’s crazy-ass, Latin-infused Nurse (which doesn’t work but is intermittently amusing) and Daniel Davis’s clear-eyed, well-spoken Friar Laurence. When Davis is on stage, you feel the audience collectively give thanks for someone who understands what Shakespeare is all about. N The Model Apartment plays through November 1 at Primary Stages (59 E 59th St, PrimaryStages.org). Romeo and Juliet plays through November 10 at Classic Stage Co. (136 E 13th St, ClassicStage.org).

CONTROVERSIAL LOVE Léa Seydoux and Adéle Exarchopoulos in Blue is the Warmest Color

Reel Love Blue is the Warmest Color Time Investment: 179 min. Return on Investment: 170 min. t’s tempting to celebrate the downfall of a gay-for-pay project like Blue is the Warmest Color (Sundance Selects). The French film from director Abdellatif Kechiche surprised everyone when it won the Palme d’Or and the Best Actress award (for both its stars, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival—but then criticism took a sharply negative turn. First, the author of the graphic novel on which the lesbian love story is based, Julie Maroh, criticized the film’s gratuitous sex scenes for lacking lesbian input. (The director and the stars are all straight.) A short time later, both actresses said they would never work with Kechiche again. Eventually Kechiche himself told a French magazine the film shouldn’t be released, saying “It has been soiled too much.” All this drama is a shame because, truth be told, Blue is the Warmest is a masterpiece. Kechiche has taken Maroh’s tale of all-consuming first love and made it universal. We watch Adèle (Exarchopoulos) transform from innocent child to mature young woman, experiencing the mystery, magic, excitement and heartbreak of coming of age as if it were our own. Kechiche nails the fantastical journey that is young love and, more importantly, how we fantasize about that love in hindsight. Sure, the graphic sex is romanticized, but—instead of the confusing mess of limbs it most likely was—isn’t that how we’d rather remember our own first time? —Benjamin Solomon

I Am Divine Time Investment: 90 min. Return on Investment: 80 min. efore Jackie Beat, Lady Bunny or even the reigning queen of drag, RuPaul, there was Divine, the fat best friend of John Waters who turned his love of bad movies and outrageous personality into something that would capture the world. Documentarian Jeffrey Schwarz (Vito) showcases Divine’s legacy in his new film I Am Divine (Automat Pictures) using a wonderful collection of childhood photos, early clips and scenes from her most infamous films, including Mondo Trasho, Polyester and, of course, Pink Flamingos. Born Harris Glenn Milstead, Divine was a member of Water’s Dreamland Studio and starred in the group’s earliest work, an attempt to celebrate their love of outrageous cinema icons like Elizabeth Taylor while pushing the boundaries of artistic taste. A punk long before it was

B

cool, Milstead’s character soon overtook his real identity and he brought Divine to the world through Waters’ signature brand of midnight theater. I Am Divine isn’t the first attempt to capture Divine’s life on film, but Schwarz does a fantastic job of corralling interviews from seemingly everyone in Divine’s life, from Mink Stole and the rest of Dreamland ranting about their acidheavy early days to Ricky Lake reminiscing about their work on Divine’s biggest and last major role, Hairspray. (Divine died in 1988 from an enlarged heart.) And most touchingly, Schwarz talks to Divine’s mother Frances, a woman Divine didn’t have a relationship with for most of her life. Most touchingly, she shares her joys at seeing her son become a star. It’s a beautiful coda to the tale of a man who turned his insecurities into an outrageous personality and forced the world (or at least the people who saw her films) to look at life beyond gender norms. —BS

By Peter Sherwood ven though we were only in the East 30s when we went to Juni, we could have sworn the cab driver took a wrong turn and dropped us off somewhere else. Juni is an immediately soothing, refined, palely considered salon, perhaps not as hip as the neighboring Breslin or as gorgeously grandiose as the NoMad Hotel, but we felt like we’d been transported to the intimate social atmospheres that were once found at Lutèce or La Côte Basque in days past. Executive chef Shaun Hergatt hails from Australia and his revolving seasonal menu is unassuming, elegant and precise, displaying a keen sense of culinary artistry—and the place has only been open for a little over two months! My two companions and I eagerly launched into the personally customized six-course menu (and we shared each other’s orders too). A black tea and lavender cocktail seemed such a bizarre

E

conglomeration at first that I had to try it. Somehow, splashes of rye, artichoke liqueur, scotch, a black-tea-infused aperitivo and lavender syrup worked together marvelously. My fella readily rode the Sidecar with cognac, juice from McIntosh apples and a fine lace of honey. The fragrant amusebouche trio was a delight, featuring a petite carrot tuile with a dot of goat cheese, root vegetable tapioca with parsley oil, and thinly sliced mushrooms with summer truffle vinaigrette. Even the crusty, warm table bread was fantastic, served with an herbed green olive oil tapenade. “Pearls” of rooty kohlrabi and butternut squash served with kingfish were quickly outdone by Hudson Valley foie gras over a Granny Smith apple purée, apple gel and a sassy apple relish. The accompanying miniature pot filled with steaming brioche was charming and perfect to swab the plate with. Tuscan kale soup was rich and earthy, outfitted with sprouted

lentils and simmered pork neck. Creamy black salsify stuffed into gentle blankets of agnolotti made us weep delicious tears. Moving toward mains, we picked a perfect pairing with a Pouilly-Fuissé that had touches of apples and honey and even traces of lemon. Black bass, featuring a fascinating latticework on the grilled skin, was graced by leaves of purslane, little leaning towers of flourless gnocchi and a truffle sabayon sauce. Atlantic salmon was enlivened by sharp fennel, a lemon yogurt cotta and watermelon radish chips. Duck lightly bathed in an anise-hyssop emulsion, flattered by small “cannons” of candy beets. Veal tenderloin was delicately flavored but found balanced depth with accompanying quinoa, burdock root, hon shimeji mushrooms and a trickle of mushroom sauce, poured at the table. By dessert, we went for a few batches of nosey, satisfying Hudson Baby bourbon. Between sips, we tried homey,

roasted Fuji apples with a touch of maple syrup and smoked mascarpone. Spongy chocolate prepared with a sweet potato purée and a bit of bay leaves left a nice touch, and taste. Sweet corn was tied up with a ribbon of tarragon lime gel and salty cheddar crisps. N

MANUEL: With aerial performers, flameswallowers, drag queens, dance numbers, lip-synching and cameos by B-listers, KONY 2 is many things. Oh, did I mention the sex? This tale about ambition and being in the spotlight intersperses among its non-sex scenes hardcore action with 10 porn stars. And I call them “stars” mainly because they’re always rising and shooting. ROD: The cast of “stars” in the non-sex vignettes run the gamut from Michael Musto to Candis Cayne and Reichen Lehmkuhl. It’s a veritable “Who’s Who in New York City.” But others—like Patricia Krentcil (New Jersey’s infamous “Tan Mom”)—are more like a “Who in the Hell is that?” MANUEL: Rod, I’ll resist making off-color jokes about Tan Mom, but don’t miss her Behind-the-Scenes outtakes. Tan Mom makes Charlie Sheen, Dennis Rodman, Paula Abdul and Lindsay Lohan look like paragons of stability. (Ouch, burned again!) ROD: Fire and snakes and sex, oh my! It’s pre-Black Party at Roseland, and Latrice “Mother Fucking” Royale (of RuPaul’s Drag Race notoriety) introduces us to one live snake and two trouser snakes. Watch as Christopher Daniels gets all circus-y with Dean Monroe in matching Slick It Up unitards. What time machine has Monroe been sleeping in? He looks as good getting his ass eaten now as he did when he first bent over 13 years ago! MANUEL: I, along with several dozen other convention-goers, watched this scene being shot earlier this year at the Black Party Expo. Kudos to Lucas’ team for integrating this circus-like exhibitionist flip-fucking into a scene about temptation, complete with a snake, an apple and original-sinning. ROD: Johnny Hazzard is another porn veteran who still looks fabulous. He and blond

ON TOP OF THE WORLD Liam Magnuson & Johnny Hazzard in Kings of New York Season 2 hottie Liam Magnuson head to a tanning salon, where they encounter Tan Mom, who’s running the place. She should’ve been running her lines! Magnuson was able to wash off the over-generous spray tan she gave him, but I couldn’t wash away the memory of her bad acting—until Magnuson started on Hazzard’s ass. MANUEL: After Hazzard’s massive self-facial, Magnuson knelt and rubbed out a cumshot so thick and slow, I swear I heard Carly Simon singing “Anticipation.” ROD: Reichen Lehmkuhl survived Amazing Race and The A List: New York, so as a frustrated fashion photographer, he knows how to handle a model-withattitude like Andrew Stark: throw him a boner—in the form of his assistant, Jed Athens. time! He’s pale, smooth and hung, with an ass made for eating. If that doesn’t make him a star, I don’t know what does. MANUEL: For me, Athens was the star. But there was something hilariously incongruous about this insatiable bottom’s cries of “Oh, my goodness!” as Stark fucked the first of two loads out of him. ROD: As the judge presiding over Duncan Black and Sean Xavier’s divorce proceedings, Candis Cayne channels Mommie Dearest and RuPaul (is there really a difference?), ordering the couple to work it out—but only after she goes into full music video mode, complete with wind machine! Why would anyone want to divorce Xavier’s huge black cock? In the end, Black settles for a trial separation...of his ass cheeks! N
